Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Smoking constitutes a significant issue in Indonesia, particularly among low-income forest farmers. Cigarettes are the second-highest household expenditure after rice, potentially comprising almost 40% of total annual income. In 2022, the prevalence of smokers aged 15 years and older was recorded at 28.26%, with West Nusa Tenggara ranking second (26.59%). This situation exacerbates poverty and reduces the quality of human resources. The study was conducted in 2023 in Ciamis Regency, Tasikmalaya (West Java), and Sumbawa (West Nusa Tenggara), areas with high cigarette consumption. The aim was to analyze the influence of demographic factors (income, age, and education) on smoking behavior …

Works Of Michael Kahle; Expanding The Viola's Role Within The Classical Music Canon, Andrew Scott Mcguire Mar 2026

Works Of Michael Kahle; Expanding The Viola's Role Within The Classical Music Canon, Andrew Scott Mcguire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This project reexamines the role of the viola within the classical canon, arguing for its repositioning as a melodic and collaborative instrument rather than a purely supportive inner voice. Analytical and experiential findings demonstrate that the viola’s capacity to modify articulation, timbre, and projection enables it to mediate between contrasting instrumental families such as bowed strings, winds, and percussion. Grounded in performance-based research, this study investigates the viola’s function in non-traditional chamber ensembles, with particular repertoire development through collaboration with composer Michael Kahle, whose works for mixed ensembles—including flute, vibraphone, oboe, piano, and wind ensemble—feature the viola as a primary …

"Finding Greatness Elsewhere": Racial Discrimination And The Attrition Of Black Women In School Psychology Training Programs, Asya Tiani Miles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Prior literature identifies discriminatory school experiences as a factor in Black women’s thoughts of leaving school psychology training programs (Jackson, 2023; Proctor, 2009). However, no studies have thoroughly examined how intersecting racial and gender discrimination contributes to Black women’s decisions to follow through with leaving. In addressing this gap, participants included eight Black women who left their programs between 2017 and 2023 due to discriminatory treatment. A reflexive thematic qualitative design was employed, and the following themes emerged: microaggressions, harsher evaluation and academic underestimation, alienation and exclusion, unsuccessful attempts to make the environment more bearable, and finding greatness elsewhere. Implications …

Auditory Stimulation Rescues Cognitive Deficit In Fmr1-Ko Mice, Mohamed Ouardouz, Amanda E. Hernan, J. Matthew Mahoney, Rodney C. Scott

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Background/Objectives: Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a triplet repeat expansion in the Fmr1 gene leading to the loss of Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein (Fmr1 protein). The loss of Fmr1 protein modulates many cell biological processes and leads to the emergence of intellectual disability and autism. FXS is modeled in Fmr1-KO mice that display features consistent with human FXS, including hypersensitivity, cognitive and learning deficits, hyperactivity and audiogenic seizures. Here, we investigated the effect of auditory stimulation during a range of developmental stages on recognition memory and sociability deficits in Fmr1-KO mice. Methods: Fmr1-KO mice were …

Offside Trap: African Football As A Mirror Of Global Structural Inequality, Ellen Busolo Milimu Mar 2026

Offside Trap: African Football As A Mirror Of Global Structural Inequality, Ellen Busolo Milimu

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

Football in Africa, as a legacy of European colonialism, is undeniable. The export of football through colonization resulted in the popularization of the sport while also creating a system of economic exploitation and impoverishment that is the cause of considerable problems for African society. This economic system positioned African  countries as dependents of former colonizers even after achieving independence. Sports, specifically football, provide a unique perspective to explore the no-win     situation in which Africa exists within the global economic system. Always chasing the elusive ‘development’ goal that is dictated by others and shifts without the interests of African countries. The …

Artificial Intelligence And Music Creativity: The Human Element And An Exploration Of Possibilities, Benjamin J. Guerrero, Raffaella Borasi, David Miller, Blaire Koerner, Zenon Borys, Yu Jung Han, Rachel Roberts

Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widely recognized as a potential game-changer for music-making. However, the direction of these changes and the extent of their impact on the music field will depend on how musicians use AI, which partly hinges on their perceptions of AI and their willingness to engage with it. Debates are ongoing about AI’s impact on creative fields, and we anticipate that musicians’ views on these matters will significantly influence their readiness to incorporate AI into their work. We interviewed 43 participants who use technology in various roles across different music genres to gain insight into their experiences with …

The Core-Modulation Architecture (Cma): A Structural Overview Of A 14-Paper Research Program (Preprint), Griselda Poe

Publications and Research

This document provides a structural overview of the Core-Modulation Architecture (CMA), a 14-paper research program on cognition, communication, and AI interaction.

The series specifies the conditions under which cognition operates, terminates, fails, and generates structure. Rather than describing cognition by its contents (beliefs, emotions, decisions), it defines cognition through its underlying architecture: constraint-governed processing across layers with distinct termination conditions.

The framework introduces a layered model consisting of Core processing (constraint preservation and structural coherence) and Modulation (affective calibration and social interface adjustment), extended by a Prior layer as the source of constraints. Across the series, phenomena such as miscommunication, …

Fit Check: Making Health Assessments Work For You, Brooklynn Raacke, Ryssa Schlaefli, Caleb Ashley, Makenzie Premer, Brooke Mann, Jessica Phelan

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

When given multiple tools to assess health, people tend to choose the one that is most familiar, fastest, or easiest to interpret. Relying solely on weight can overshadow other important indicators of health, such as body composition, cardiovascular function, and muscular development. Understanding this preference, even when other tools are available, matters for both educators and fitness professionals. This study used naturalistic observation to assess gym-goers' usage of health and anthropometric assessment tools. Results indicated that while gym-goers initially showed interest in less commonly used assessment tools, they overwhelmingly used the scale. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Implementing A Student Standardized Patient Elective To Improve Communication And Confidence In Undergraduate Nursing Simulation, Katie J. Mcqueen Mar 2026

Implementing A Student Standardized Patient Elective To Improve Communication And Confidence In Undergraduate Nursing Simulation, Katie J. Mcqueen

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Abstract

Simulation plays an important role in preparing undergraduate nursing students for clinical practice by fostering communication skills and building confidence. Currently, simulation experiences often depend on faculty and staff to play the roles of patients or family members. Research shows that nursing students can be effectively trained to serve as standardized patients, creating opportunities for peer-supported learning and improving simulation experiences. This evidence-based practice proposal recommends the implementation of a 1-credit-hour Student Standardized Patient (SSP) elective in the undergraduate nursing curriculum for senior level nursing students. The elective would provide structured training in role portrayal, safety practices, and case …

From Arrival To Opportunity: A Policy Analysis For Supporting Newly Arrived English Learners In California, Valeria Gabrielli, Stephanie Mendoza Hernandez

School of Public Policy Capstones

Newly arrived immigrant students, commonly referred to as “newcomers,” represent a notable portion of the English Learner (EL) population in California’s K–12 public schools. As of Fall 2023, the California Department of Education reported that newcomers comprised 3.27% of total student enrollment. Although enrollment is projected to decline in the near term, the potential for future increases highlights the need for sustainable, evidence-based support systems. This study examines how California K–12 public schools with large EL populations provide academic and trauma-informed support services to newcomer students, with a particular focus on early intervention in grades K–5. Using the Bardach policy …

Using The Diary–Interview Method With Time-Constrained Professionals: The Case Of Journalists And Harassment, Ilmari Hiltunen, Reeta Pöyhtäri, Kaarina Nikunen

The Qualitative Report

This article presents a methodological reflection on the diary–interview method’s value and application when used with professionals whose schedules are both demanding and unpredictable, drawing on the authors’ insights from a study examining the harassment and intimidation of journalists. Our experiences demonstrate that combining solicited diary entries with recurring interviews can yield substantial advantages over using either method alone. Diaries are particularly well suited to capturing rich, situated data and individual perspectives, adding distinctive value especially when exploring sensitive or personal issues. Interviews that probe these accounts and revisit incidents in greater depth, in turn, enhance understanding of participants’ emotions, …

The Qualitative Report

This study explores the influence of Indonesia's school literacy initiative program, also known as the school literacy movement (SLM), on academic achievement and religious character formation among Hindu students at Bali Mandara State High School. The SLM’s effects within Bali’s predominantly Hindu community provide a perspective on how literacy initiatives intersect with cultural and religious education in a largely Muslim country. The objective of the study was to assess the transformative impact of the SLM on both educational outcomes and character development, specifically examining its alignment with Hindu teachings. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews …

“Always Having To Dampen And Dilute My Essence In Order To Fit”: Intersectional Experiences Of Queer Scholars Of Color In Stem And Stem Education, Nuria Jaumot-Pascual, Lisette Torres-Gerald, Maria Ong

The Qualitative Report

This article examines the intersectional experiences of queer scholars of color in STEM and STEM education. Using arts-informed research methods, we conducted and analyzed five interviews and a focus group transcript that focused on the support and hurdles that five participants encountered and the strategies they utilized to navigate their work in STEM and STEM education. We identified that, against the backdrop of prevailing heteronormativity and normative whiteness in STEM, participants compartmentalized their STEM and social identities, felt compelled to negotiate the risks of coming out, and assumed the double burden and invisible work of students who were queer and/or …

It Shouldn’T Be Sexy: Exploring The Intersection Between Staged Intimacy And The Law, Spencer Darling

Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal

If your job requires you to passionately embrace your coworker after surviving the seat-riveting climax action of the third act, does that complicate your workplace’s sexual harassment prevention strategy? Most jobs do not require workers to make intentional intimate contact with their coworkers. Yet, in the entertainment industry, some jobs require not just intimate contact with coworkers but selling that contact as authentic. This staged intimacy, like staged violence, carries a risk that simulated conduct can result in real harm.

When produced without precaution, staged intimacy can create working conditions that constitute sexual harassment in violation of Title VII of …
