The Effect Of Providing End Of Life Care On The Mental Health Of Critical Care Nurses, Christy Nelson
The Effect Of Providing End Of Life Care On The Mental Health Of Critical Care Nurses, Christy Nelson
Master's Projects
Critical care nurses are providing care to acutely ill patients now more than ever and may experience moral or emotional distress due to providing end of life care to their patients. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the mental health effects of a critical care nurse providing palliative end of life care. A literature search using PubMed and CINHAL was conducted and fourteen published articles between 2012-2023 were included in this review. Several interventions were identified which may be useful in decreasing burnout and moral distress in critical care nurses. Overall, nurses experienced the most negative mental …
Implicit Racial Bias: A Human Computer Interaction Study Using Eye Tracker, Wenfan Zhang
Implicit Racial Bias: A Human Computer Interaction Study Using Eye Tracker, Wenfan Zhang
Master's Projects
Contemporary Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research has an increasing emphasis on reducing ethnicity bias. The study presents a new method to explore and reduce biases using detailed experiments. The experimental procedure involves presenting participants with images of ethnically diverse characters across three conditions. The study's results significantly illuminate ethnicity bias in character selection dynamics. Participants exposed to targeted training interventions displayed a significant shift in preferences for characters engaged in intellectual activities. Notably, this shift was influenced by the ethnicity of the characters involved. Interestingly, the eye-tracking data unveiled distinct patterns of cognitive load, characterized by slower response times and greater …
Enhancing Driver Distraction Detection Through The Synergy Of Deep And Traditional Machine Learning, Gowtham Chandrasekaran
Enhancing Driver Distraction Detection Through The Synergy Of Deep And Traditional Machine Learning, Gowtham Chandrasekaran
Master's Projects
Distracted driving is a major contributor to motor vehicle accidents, causing injury and loss of life. It is one of the major factors that affect the overall driving behavior of a person. Insurance companies take into consideration factors like gender, age, etc. to set insurance premiums for their customers. Today, machine learning and artificial intelligence can eradicate this bias. A machine learning model can analyze driving behavior, such as the frequency and severity of accidents, the speed at which they drive, and their habits such as distracted driving. Based on this information, the model can then determine the risk of …

Unlearning Hidden Bias Between Refugees : An Initial Empirical Investigation, Akshay Sunil Gurnaney
Master's Projects
The challenges that refugees in various regions encounter are common knowledge. One such challenge is a bias among refugees on ethnocentric grounds. In particular, there are various articles that have pointed out the struggles faced by Syrian refugees in countries like Europe as a result of implicit bias. In fact, the media coverage of Syrian crises and the government responses to the same shed negative light on the refugees themselves. On the contrary, the media coverage of Ukrainian crises is very different with lesser restrictions from the governments.
This research attempts to identify the extent of implicit bias between Ukrainian …
Visual Scene Classification Using Ensemble Of Machine Learning Classifiers, Rahul Ranganath
Visual Scene Classification Using Ensemble Of Machine Learning Classifiers, Rahul Ranganath
Master's Projects
Visual scenes represent the comprehensive visual information observed in a particular environment. Whether natural landscapes, urban settings, or designed interiors, visual scenes encompass the arrangement of elements that individuals perceive through their visual senses. Visual search is perhaps one of the most typical jobs that we carry out several times a day. This is one of the main paradigms for researching visual attention. Many visual task models have been put forward in an effort to better understand visual attention. Fixations and the rapid movement of the eye - saccades, define visual exploration and visual search. When we subject viewers to …

The evolving landscape of backend computational systems especially in biomedical research involving heavy data operations which have a gap of not being used properly. It is due to the lack of communication standard between the frontend and backend. This gap presents a problem to researchers who need to use the frontend for visualizing and manipulating their data but also want to do complex analysis. CAPRI a python-based backend system specializing in analyzing Evidential Reasoning data also has the same issue. This project offers a solution PyGrapherConnect module acting as a data conversion layer between CAPRI and PyGrapher, its frontend interface. …

Mild Cognitive Impairment And Alzheimer’S Disease Detection And Testing Interface (Mci-Addti) Modeller10.4 Integrating Structure-Function Prediction Modules, Grant Galileo Jacobson
Master's Projects
In the population of adult human patients who over express Beta and Tau Amyloids, it is unclear why 40% of them do not have Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), when all patients with AD have an overexpression of Beta and Tau Amyloids. The MCI-AD-DTI project’s epigenetic pipeline is an evolving computation tool that seeks epigenetic-related information related to the observed disparity. The MCI-AD-DTI’s epigenetic pipeline’s ability to identify mutations currently relies solely on PyPDB for verification of its protein functionality evaluation. The assessment process of the industry standard application, Modeller10.4, is independent from the current epigenetic pipeline’s protein evaluation algorithm. Thus, this …

Xai-Driven Cnn For Diabetic Retinopathy Detection, Vikas Shenoy Pete
Master's Projects
Diabetes, a chronic metabolic disorder, poses a significant health threat with potentially severe consequences, including diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness. In this project, we tackle this threat by developing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to support the diagnosis based on eye images. The aim is early detection and intervention to mitigate the effects of diabetes on eye health. To enhance transparency and interpretability, we incorporate explainable AI techniques. This research not only contributes to the early diagnosis of diabetic eye disease but also advances our understanding of how deep learning models arrive at their decisions, fostering trust and …
Examining The Effect Of Positive Greetings At The Door On Student Academic Engagement And Disruptive Behavior, Abigail Lawson
Examining The Effect Of Positive Greetings At The Door On Student Academic Engagement And Disruptive Behavior, Abigail Lawson
Master's Theses
Positive Greetings at the Door (PGD) is a proactive classroom management strategy designed to assist students’ transitioning from a non-academic environment (e.g., physical education, lunch, hallway) to an academic environment (e.g., classroom instruction). PGD can prepare students to engage in academic behavior (e.g., sitting in seat, working on-tasks) and avoid engaging in nonacademic/disruptive behavior, thereby delaying the start of classroom instruction. Such disruptive behavior can lead to teacher frustration, which may contribute to a negative classroom environment. The current study used a concurrent multiple baseline design to assess the effects of PGD (Cook et al., 2018) on academically engaged behavior …

Increasing Historically Underserved And Underrepresented Student Completion In Stem Pathways At A Hispanic-Serving Institution: An Action Research Study, Inez F. Olive, Kyle J. Winslow, Osurè L. Brown, Eric R. Marshall
Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations
There is a demand for accountability for higher education institutions to increase student completion, specifically for institutions that enroll many students from historically underserved and underrepresented populations (HUUP). Meanwhile, labor market analysis presents a demand for skilled and diverse workers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Hispanic-serving institutions (HSI) have an advantage when supporting student completion to meet this workforce demand. This inquiry employed participatory action research (PAR) through a partnership with an HSI in rural Washington State. Using transformative worldview as the theoretical framework, this study aimed to determine the influence of completion planning for STEM students …

Advancing Equity-Minded Leadership Practices To Improve Educational Outcomes For Black Immigrant Students: A Phenomenological Case Study, Charmaine Caroline Marshall
Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations
As schools become increasingly diverse, there has been increasing demand for accountability for school districts to seek to improve student performance (Portz, 2021). A qualitative phenomenological research study was used to explore how school leaders in Seattle Public Schools were responding to the academic needs of Somali immigrant students, the largest Black immigrant group in the district. By using equity mindedness as the theoretical framework, the research study examined how the response to Somali immigrant students might also promote positive outcomes for other historically marginalized and underserved students. This study recruited participants who were former and current school principals, members …

Mindfulness And Identity Awareness: Tools To Support Teachers And Leaders Towards Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion (Dei) Practices In Schools, Joslyn Williams
Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations
Black women are too often at the assault of policies that inflict harm and often forced to seek legal redress after exhausting all nonlegal avenues available that are supposed to ensure that learning occurs in harm-free spaces (Ward, Hardaway, and Njoku, 2022). The examination of the place and work of spirituality, reflection, and the power of remembering (Dillard, 2019) is explored through narratives of Black women, highlighting two case studies of educators from perspectives within private and public institutions.
A need exists to explore and describe the experiences of Black women teacher-leaders as they engage with diversity, equity, and inclusion …

A Portrait Of The Artist’S Heirs In Mediation: Adr Techniques To Prevent And Resolve Disputes Following An Author’S Death, Nicholas Beudert
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
If an author's work is powerful enough, or popular enough, it's likely that at some point someone will want to write about her. For scholars embarking upon these projects, the author's body of published work can provide insight into her psyche, but correspondence and other unpublished materials can also be valuable. Copyright law covers all of these materials, and when the author dies, she can bequest her copyright as she would the rest of her estate (if she hasn't transferred it during her lifetime). The recipient of these copyrights may now treat the copyrights as her own, as though she …

Caring For Fat Bodies: Bridging The Gap Between Intention And Practice In Primary Care, Sadie Pile
Caring For Fat Bodies: Bridging The Gap Between Intention And Practice In Primary Care, Sadie Pile
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Healthcare providers work hard to support patients in optimizing their health. Typical care prioritizes use of the body mass index (BMI) which has widely been criticized for its ineffectiveness at measuring health, and which perpetuates a white European male body as “normal”. From individual care to public health policy, the measurement of health through BMI and thinness has created and enforced weight stigma. Literature over the past 20 years has continued to demonstrate the negative health impacts of weight stigma, not only in harming physiological, psychological, and behavioral health, but also in fact contributing to weight gain. Notably, the research …
At The Heart Of Leviathan: A Hobbesian Reading Of Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness, Bethany Lilleyman
At The Heart Of Leviathan: A Hobbesian Reading Of Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness, Bethany Lilleyman
Theses
This thesis demonstrates how a historical-philosophical reading of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899) through the lens of Thomas Hobbes’ thought can provide new understandings of Conrad’s critique of empire, by extending existing literature on the novella’s historical and politico-philosophical ideas. As Conrad’s use of a literary-impressionistic style has often left readers debating the text’s meaning, the once-canonical novella has come under the intense scrutiny of both readers and scholars alike. This scrutiny intensified with the rise of postcolonialism in the late 1970s, which focused on the novella’s controversial representations of race and imperialism. Tensions surrounding the text have also …
Outlier State: Elite Rhetoric As A Window To Western Australian Regionalism, David Jones
Outlier State: Elite Rhetoric As A Window To Western Australian Regionalism, David Jones
Theses
Western Australia was the last of the Australian self-governing British colonies to agree to join the Australian Federation in 1900 and voted to secede, by a significant electoral margin, in a referendum held in 1933. Some have even argued the State has been a reluctant member of the Federation since this momentous vote. If this is the case, what evidence is there that can justify this perception, and possibly point to enduring underlying factors supporting this Western Australian regionalism sentiment and identity? Many of the drivers which led to the successful secession referendum in 1933 still exist today. The State …

Mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder impact the lives of almost a billion people worldwide. The current standard pharmacological interventions offer limited benefits, but new research in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) has shown promising outcomes. This study sought to add to the existing body of research regarding KAP by measuring whether depression, anxiety, and/or spirituality scores improved significantly in participants after one KAP session by measuring Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ~9) scores, General Anxiety Disqrder-7 {GAD-7), and National Institute of Health Healing Experience of All Life Stressors (NIHtHEALS) scores, respectively. A retrospective chart review performed on clinical data …
Supporting Pregnant People In Prenatal Physical Activity & Exercise: Brief In-Service Training Integrating The 6 Rs Framework To Facilitate Counseling By Healthcare Professionals, Morgan Frazier
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Studies show that physical inactivity in pregnancy is attributed to pregnant people receiving inadequate and incomplete prenatal physical activity and exercise (PAE) counseling from healthcare professionals (HCPs). There is a gap in the knowledge translation of prenatal PAE guidelines and pregnant people are uncertain how to safely engage in PAE. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the effect of an online brief in-service training integrating the 6 Rs Framework on Rainier Valley Birth & Health Center HCPs’ (i.e., Certified Nurse-Midwives and Licensed Midwives) attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, and practices pertaining to antenatal PAE. Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Family-Based Treatment Education On Provider's Knowledge, Anticipatory Use, And Attitudes Who Treat Adolescent Patients Diagnosed With Anorexia Nervosa, Treven Back
DNP Projects
Background. Anorexia Nervosa is a chronic, disabling, and costly disease with a higher mortality rate than any other psychiatric illness. Because of the need for medical, psychiatric, and nutritional care, treatment is complex. Purpose. This DNP project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a family-based treatment education intervention on providers' attitudes, knowledge, and …
Evaluation Of Universal Depression Screening In A Pediatric Diabetes Outpatient Clinic With The Integration Of A Depression Screening Tool Into An Electronic Health Record, Jenna Westberry
DNP Projects
Background: Depression is a significant problem for adolescents with chronic health conditions. Prevalence rates are two to three times higher in adolescents with diabetes compared to adolescents without diabetes (Badescu et al., 2016). Routine depression screening is not transpiring at rates and frequency recommended by the American Diabetes Association for this population. Implementing use of the Patient Health Questionnaire for all adolescents over the age of twelve years with Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus during routine health visits may improve early identification and diagnosis of depression and improve long-term health outcomes.
Purpose: The goal of this project was …
