Intermittent Sucrose Access: Sweetness Versus Calories, Jarret Folmer, Rudy Eikelboom Jan 2023

Intermittent Sucrose Access: Sweetness Versus Calories, Jarret Folmer, Rudy Eikelboom

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Nondeprived rats receiving every 3rd day access (E3DA) to 4% sucrose solution consume more sucrose on access days compared to rats with everyday access (EDA). Rats receiving EDA or E3DA to 16% sucrose do not consume different amounts, but if placed on every 2nd day access (E2DA) to 4% sucrose E3DA-group rats consume more than EDA rats (Eikelboom, Hewitt, & Adams, 2022). E3DA affects rats’ value of sucrose but effects appear hidden with high sucrose concentrations. Valyear and Eikelboom (2021) suggested that calorie ceilings limit E3DA-induced consumption with high sucrose, but this ceiling could also be caused by …

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Ecological Momentary Assessment And Video At Eliciting The Impact Of Park Features On Human Health And Well-Being In A Protected Area Context, Katelyn O'Bright Jan 2023

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Ecological Momentary Assessment And Video At Eliciting The Impact Of Park Features On Human Health And Well-Being In A Protected Area Context, Katelyn O'Bright

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

It is increasingly recognized that contact with nature in parks and other forms of protected areas provides benefits to visitors’ physical, mental, social, spiritual, and intellectual health and well-being. However, the methods used to assess these outcomes, including the influence of different environmental features that lead to these benefits, is under-researched. To address this gap, this study used a mixed methods design to explore the effectiveness of using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) and video to assess the impact of various park features on the self-perceived (subjective) health and well-being of visitors. Participants were prompted by a mobile application on their …

Sales Enablement In Entrepreneurial Ventures: Essays On The Role Of Social Capital And Resilience In Disruptive Environments, Ali Anwar Jan 2023

Sales Enablement In Entrepreneurial Ventures: Essays On The Role Of Social Capital And Resilience In Disruptive Environments, Ali Anwar

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Enduring commercial success of entrepreneurial ventures is often associated with effective selling and an ability to navigate dynamic environments. However, two challenges stand out: 1) effectively managing cross-functional integration of sales with other value-creating organizational functions, given that selling in the contemporary organization is a multi-actor, strategic effort, and 2) being resilient to environmental disruptions, given the increasing frequency of their occurrence. I take a sales enablement perspective to focus on themes which are essential to optimizing sales performance in entrepreneurial ventures. The first theme focuses on internal social capital embedded in the cross-functional relationships of the sales, marketing, and …

“It Felt Like A Sense Of Rape:” Women’S Experiences Of Strip Searching In Prison As Gendered, Misogynoir, And Colonial Genocidal Sexual Violence, Jessica Hutchison Jan 2023

“It Felt Like A Sense Of Rape:” Women’S Experiences Of Strip Searching In Prison As Gendered, Misogynoir, And Colonial Genocidal Sexual Violence, Jessica Hutchison

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previously imprisoned women have long been sounding the alarm about the harms of strip searching and calling for it to be banned. However, it remains a routine prison practice and research into it is scant. Furthermore, Canada is incarcerating Indigenous women at genocidal levels and disproportionately imprisoning Black women. Therefore, my research explored the use of strip searching in federal prisons through anti-colonial and anti-racist feminist frameworks, specifically, abolition feminism.

My research was grounded in the ethic of relational accountability and centred reciprocity, respect, and responsibility in each phase. I gathered stories from 23 formerly incarcerated women from across Canada …

Investigating The Role Of Implicit Theories Of Relationships On The Interpretation Of Investments In Relationship Decision-Making, Sarah Wall Jan 2023

Investigating The Role Of Implicit Theories Of Relationships On The Interpretation Of Investments In Relationship Decision-Making, Sarah Wall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A person’s prior investment in their romantic relationship is a strong predictor of whether they remain committed to that relationship (e.g., Le et al., 2010; Rusbult, 1980a; 1983), and this pattern is often seen outside of interpersonal contexts as well (e.g., Arkes & Blumer, 1985; Olivola, 2018; Thaler, 1980). However, little research has considered the extent to which commitment-relevant decisions might be affected in a top-down way by people’s implicit theories of relationships (ITRs; Knee, 1998). I theorized that lay theories about how relationships work may affect the extent that people consider past investments when making decisions about continuing with …

Nomological Network Retrieval: The Development Of A Methodological Process For The Review Of Knowledge Structures In Academia And Its Application To Marketing Scholarship, Mohammad Ali Simjour Jan 2023

Nomological Network Retrieval: The Development Of A Methodological Process For The Review Of Knowledge Structures In Academia And Its Application To Marketing Scholarship, Mohammad Ali Simjour

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The increasing supply of peer-reviewed marketing publications indicates that the scholarly community’s understanding of marketing phenomena has increased significantly. However, this significant increase also prevents individual scholars from gaining insight into marketing phenomena simply because the sheer number of publications make a manual review of the literature impossible. This is an important limitation mainly because the validity of knowledge development processes in marketing partially depend on the scholars’ comprehensive understanding of extant knowledge. In this dissertation, I develop a methodological process to address this limitation and enable scholars to gain insight into large samples of peer-reviewed publications. I then apply …

Action Strategies Of Young Adults During An Attentionally Demanding Collision Avoidance Task In Virtual Reality, Brooke J. Thompson Jan 2023

Action Strategies Of Young Adults During An Attentionally Demanding Collision Avoidance Task In Virtual Reality, Brooke J. Thompson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Walking and navigating through cluttered environments is a task that people do almost automatically while completing multiple cognitive and motor tasks simultaneously. Vision plays an essential role in adaptive locomotion as it allows individuals to make anticipatory actions (i.e., alter trajectory and/or gait speed) to successfully avoid oncoming collisions (Cinelli et al., 2008; Patla, 1997). To initiate a behaviour change at the appropriate time, humans rely on optical variables such as time-to-contact (TTC) (Cinelli & Patla, 2007). After determining when to initiate an avoidance behaviour, it is thought that humans maintain a protective zone (i.e., safety margin) by controlling the …

Is Task Conflict Truly Good For Everyone? Examining The Interaction Between Task Conflict And Gender On Individual Outcomes, Samantha Hancock Jan 2023

Is Task Conflict Truly Good For Everyone? Examining The Interaction Between Task Conflict And Gender On Individual Outcomes, Samantha Hancock

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation examines perceptions of task conflict instigators. Task conflict is a core process that teams need to engage in to solve complex problems, however we know little about how the individual who instigates the task conflict is perceived, and what effects these perceptions have on important workplace outcomes like co-worker interaction intentions, promotion potential, and leadership potential. I propose that women who instigate task conflict may be perceived differently on the two fundamental dimensions of person perception: agency and communion. These perceptions, in turn, go on to influence important workplace outcomes that could provide additional insight into why there …

Swimming Against The Tide: The Relational Praxis Of Social Justice In Social Work, Samantha Clarke

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Swimming Against the Tide: The Relational Praxis of Social Justice in Social Work

Abstract

This qualitative research study explores the praxis of social justice by social workers who identify as practising social justice–oriented social work in southern Ontario, Canada. The research is set against the backdrop of the evolution of social justice in social work, its practice in the current neoliberal environment, and its continued significance in the profession. The project draws on critical and liberal social justice philosophies to ask the question: “What does social justice praxis look like in the context of contemporary social work?” This is a …

Experiences Of Quality Of Life Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Mental Health Problems, And Addictions, Wilsy Choudhary Jan 2023

Experiences Of Quality Of Life Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Mental Health Problems, And Addictions, Wilsy Choudhary

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Youth experiencing homelessness are often at a higher risk for developing concurrent mental health and addiction disorders. Existing interventions such as Housing First for Youth (H4FY) aim to provide youth experiencing homelessness with immediate access to safe, affordable housing as well as social inclusion and wellness supports. Furthermore, mental health interventions in the form of an integrated mental health and addictions (IMHA) service model have also been proposed to address the access barriers in place for youth experiencing homelessness, such as arbitrary exclusion criteria for substance use, long waiting periods and to further help them navigate the existing complex mental …

"I'M Not Working, But I'M A Professional": Precarious Employment Pathways, Consequences, And Resistance Strategies Impacting The Health Of Racialized Immigrant Women, Elizabeth C. Watters Jan 2023

"I'M Not Working, But I'M A Professional": Precarious Employment Pathways, Consequences, And Resistance Strategies Impacting The Health Of Racialized Immigrant Women, Elizabeth C. Watters

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Precarious employment, which is characterized by low wages, insecurity, few entitlements, and a higher risk of ill health, is on the rise in Canada; however, precarious forms of employment are not equally distributed across society, but are borne disproportionately by some groups, including racialized immigrant women. To better understand the impact of precarious employment on the health of racialized immigrant women, I conducted a qualitative study consisting of semi-structured interviews (n=21) and two follow-up focus groups (n=11) with women in Southwestern Ontario. The women were recruited through a combination of convenience and snowball sampling and were compensated for their time …

A Close Look At The Connections Between Mental-State Talk, Theory Of Mind, And Source Monitoring During Parent-Child Reminiscing Of Emotional Events, Mallory Earnshaw Jan 2023

A Close Look At The Connections Between Mental-State Talk, Theory Of Mind, And Source Monitoring During Parent-Child Reminiscing Of Emotional Events, Mallory Earnshaw

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Autobiographical memories play a critical role in shaping personal identity, regulating emotions, and guiding future behaviour. Reminiscing about these memories can be particularly beneficial for coping with negative experiences. This study investigated the connections between mental-state talk, theory of mind, and source monitoring in parent-child reminiscing, and how it can be influenced by remembering enjoyable versus frustrating events. This study involved children ages 3-8 (N = 50) and consisted of two sessions. In the first session, the child reminisced with their parent about an enjoyable and frustrating event and completed two source-monitoring tasks. In the second session, the child …

Ethical Dilemmas And Moral Distress In Companion Animal Veterinary Medicine: Mental Health Implications, Bronwyn Dickson Jan 2023

Ethical Dilemmas And Moral Distress In Companion Animal Veterinary Medicine: Mental Health Implications, Bronwyn Dickson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Mental health concerns are a significant problem in the veterinary community, and studies suggest that veterinarians working in Western countries are at higher risk of suicide compared to the general population and other healthcare professionals (Bartram et al., 2009; Bartram & Baldwin, 2010; Platt et al., 2012). Additionally, veterinary medicine is an occupation inundated with complex ethical and moral dilemmas. However, current studies are limited in their ability to contextualize the risk and contributing factors fully; therefore, they offer limited insight into effective preventative and support strategies. Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), eight companion animal veterinarians were interviewed about their …

Theorizing Corroboration, Maggie Wittlin Jan 2023

Theorizing Corroboration, Maggie Wittlin

Faculty Scholarship

A child makes an out-of-court statement accusing an adult of abuse. That statement is important proof, but it also presents serious reliability concerns. When deciding whether it is sufficiently reliable to be admitted, should a court consider whether the child’s statement is corroborated—whether, for example, there is medical evidence of abuse? More broadly, should courts consider corroboration when deciding whether evidence is reliable enough to be admitted at trial? Judges, rule-makers, and scholars have taken significantly divergent approaches to this question and come to different conclusions.

This Article argues that there is a key problem with using corroboration to evaluate …

Publications and Research

This article presents the Brazilian Portuguese-Russian (BraPoRus) corpus, whose goal is to collect, analyze, and preserve for posterity the spoken heritage Russian still used today in Brazil by approximately 1,500 elderly bilingual heritage Russian–Brazilian Portuguese speakers. Their unique 100-year-old variety of moribund Russian is disappearing because it has not been passed to their descendants born in Brazil. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we remotely collected 170 h of speech samples in heritage Russian from 26 participants (Mage = 75.7 years) in naturalistic settings using Zoom or a phone call. To estimate the quality of collected data, we focus on two methodological …

Psalm 1a–B (1:1–2:12 As Combined And A Chiasm): What Yhwh Knows About People’S Paths And Plans That Will Perish, W. Creighton Marlowe Jan 2023

Psalm 1a–B (1:1–2:12 As Combined And A Chiasm): What Yhwh Knows About People’S Paths And Plans That Will Perish, W. Creighton Marlowe

The Asbury Journal

This article seeks to explore whether a division really exists between Psalm 1 and Psalm 2. The author argues that the presence of a chiasm which extends throughout the two psalms gives potential further evidence for the argument that the two psalms where once part of one continuous literary creation. The themes involve the laws of YHWH and the consequences of breaking these laws both for individuals and for nations.

Dispositions For Christian Witness Among Theravada Buddhists, Stephen Bailey Jan 2023

Dispositions For Christian Witness Among Theravada Buddhists, Stephen Bailey

The Asbury Journal

This article reflects on communicating the Christian gospel appropriately and effectively among Southeast Asian Theravada Buddhists (SEATB). It is concerned with contextualizing the means of communication rather than theological concepts. Contextualization is often discussed with little reference to the level of contextualization, including: the content of the gospel, liturgical forms, social rules for relating, and dispositions shaped by Buddhist virtues used in communication. Examples are given of contextualization among SEATB, and then descriptions of how communicators of the gospel can use dispositions shaped by key Buddhist virtues. An argument is made that among SEATB, the means of communicating the gospel …

Creating A Gifted-Friendly Classroom, David Wolff

Open Educational Resources - Teaching and Learning

The goal of undergraduate teacher preparation programs is to equip future teachers to work with all learners. Gifted and talented learners are likely found in every classroom regardless of where they reside. According to Rinn et al. (2022), Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Nebraska do not require undergraduate teacher candidates to take university coursework on gifted education. The goal of this presentation is to provide a general overview of gifted education specific to Kansas. This presentation aims to address myths and misconceptions about gifted education and gifted learners, characteristics of gifted learners, a basic overview of a general identification process, …

Untraining Gender Bias: An Eye-Tracking Study, Ripujit S. Bamrah

Master's Projects

In recent years, social cognitive theory has emphasized the role of cognitive processes in shaping perceptions and behavior related to gender bias. By examining the impact of targeted training interventions, this study seeks to better understand the influence of such processes on decision-making in the context of character selection. This human-computer interaction study explores the potential of intervention-based training to untraining gender bias in character selection. With an increasing need to address gender bias in various domains, understanding the impact of gender-based training becomes crucial. According to our hypothesis, exposure to masculine characters would boost people’s preference for female- intellectualized …

Pet Loss And Grieving Strategies: A Systematic Review Of Literature, Ruth E. Cervantes

Master's Projects

The impact that companion animals have on human lives has been explored in many aspects including therapy and emotional support. In some cases, these types of pets have been deemed necessary for pet owners with medical problems. However, pets are not only a medical necessity for some humans, but they are also companions, and most are included as family members. The loss of a pet often brings on intense grief that is not often acknowledged in the workforce. Bereavement leave for immediate family members is a benefit offered to employees, and as we will read in this literature review pet …
