Depictions Of Strikes On Social Media, Zachary D. Mangels Jan 2023

Depictions Of Strikes On Social Media, Zachary D. Mangels

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Social media provides a rich source for the study of social movements. Not only do movement organizations use social media as a platform to spread their message and organize, but users can also share their thoughts about a particular movement with ease. This project seeks to understand how the socioeconomic status and gender of a social movement’s participants affect the public’s reaction to their activities. This is done by studying how these movements are described on Twitter, and if these descriptions differ among different striking professions. The types of social movement I intend to study are all strikes which were …

Firewise Landscaping: Homeowner Knowledge, Behaviors And Educational Preferences, Kendal Beauvais, Rowan Grassi, Frederick Gleasman

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Although wildfire is a natural process in fire-adapted forests, it poses growing socioeconomic and health threats. Urban development and expansion into the wildland-urban interface (WUI) has heightened wildfire exposure, putting tens of thousands of homes at risk in Montana alone. The Firewise USA program was created to reduce the risk of home ignition and loss in the WUI. The program encourages WUI homeowners to engage in mitigation efforts such as using Firewise landscaping strategies to create a defensible zone around their homes and using building materials that decrease overall ignition risk. Despite strong evidence that Firewise mitigation strategies are effective, …

Sentence Length And Perceptions Of Dangerousness As A Function Of Race, Attributional Complexity, And Ability To Meet Bail, Hannah Baldwin Jan 2023

Sentence Length And Perceptions Of Dangerousness As A Function Of Race, Attributional Complexity, And Ability To Meet Bail, Hannah Baldwin

Psychology Theses

Defendant race and ethnicity impact sentencing length decisions, leading to discrimination in the criminal justice system. Aspects of the pretrial process that strongly correlate with a defendant’s socioeconomic status, the use of cash bail, may also influence sentencing length, given the negative stereotypes about individuals of lower socioeconomic statuses. Relatively few studies have explored the impact of cash bail use on sentencing decisions or sought to understand why use of cash bail might influence these decisions. The current study investigates the impact of defendant ability to meet bail (yes v. no) on judgments of sentence length and dangerousness within the …

The Predictive Effect Of Parent Closeness On Substance Use For Coping In Adoptees: An Application Of Motivational Models Of Substance Use, Alison B. Klein Jan 2023

The Predictive Effect Of Parent Closeness On Substance Use For Coping In Adoptees: An Application Of Motivational Models Of Substance Use, Alison B. Klein

Psychology Theses

To explain a previously observed triad of substance abuse, adoption, and poor mental health adjustment in adoptees, the proposed study applies the Substance Use Motivation Model. This model would suggest that adoptees are motivated to use substances to negatively reinforce (remove or mitigate) depression and anxiety symptomology. Parent closeness is an established protective factor against negative mental health symptomology and substance use, suggesting closeness may influence the relationship between negative mental health symptomology and motivations to use substances for coping. To test this relationship, 100 adoptees were administered the Substance Use Motives Measure (SUMM), the Personal Health Questionaire-9 (Depression), the …

The Evolution Of Stereotypes About Alcohol Dependency In Film: Gender, Family, And Treatment, Jordan Sweenie Jan 2023

The Evolution Of Stereotypes About Alcohol Dependency In Film: Gender, Family, And Treatment, Jordan Sweenie

Psychology Theses

When watching films, people seek reflections and depictions of themselves and their experiences, something that they can understand and relate to. Movies are often looked at to decide, either subconsciously or consciously, how we view society, widespread issues, and one another—Oscar Wilde wrote that “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life” (Wilde, 1891). This is particularly true in how we as a society view mental illness, and what kinds of stigma are reinforced or rejected through the film industry. Accurately portraying any form of mental illness in film can be difficult, as experiences are subjective and no two …

The Impact Of Effective Motivation Strategies On Student Engagement In Secondary Physical Education Classrooms, Devin Wortman Jan 2023

The Impact Of Effective Motivation Strategies On Student Engagement In Secondary Physical Education Classrooms, Devin Wortman

Education Theses

Properly motivating students is not only the backbone of academic success but positive in-class experiences. When students are having more positive classroom experiences, they will ultimately be more motivated to engage and succeed. More and more students today are choosing not to take physical education in school. A lack of self-confidence and a general interest in the subject are two of the many factors associated with this problem. With the help of intrinsic motivation and self-determination theory, this thesis will seek to answer the question: What impact does effective motivation have on secondary students’ willingness to participate in physical education …

Examining The Effect Of Witnessing Sexual Harassment On School Engagement: The Moderating Role Of Gender, Emily Sgritta

Psychology Theses

The following study investigated the potential relationships between directly or indirectly witnessing sexual harassment, the witness’ gender, school engagement, and psychological distress. Participants from an undergraduate university (N = 168) responded to a survey in which they answered questions relating to witnessing sexual harassment and their psychological distress, burnout, school engagement, and perceived social support after the event. For purposes of analyses, potential relationships on psychological distress and school engagement were examined further. Participants who directly witnessed sexual harassment reported lower school engagement than participants who didn’t report directly witnessing sexual harassment. Direct witnesses reported lower levels of vigor, dedication, …

The Relationship Between Loneliness And Experiential Avoidance After Implementation Of A Self-Compassion Intervention, Alyssa Mielock Jan 2023

The Relationship Between Loneliness And Experiential Avoidance After Implementation Of A Self-Compassion Intervention, Alyssa Mielock

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

An individual’s perception of a social relationship is distinct from an individual’s difficulty forming and maintaining social relationships. Loneliness is defined as an individual’s distress resulting from the discrepancy between perceived and desired social relationship quality. In the short term, loneliness may act as a motivator for an individual to seek social support to minimize distress. However, long-term loneliness is associated with physical and psychological impairments. There have been several risk factors identified that contribute to chronic loneliness, such as social isolation, psychopathology, and ineffective coping strategies. Ineffective coping may be one mechanism by which loneliness is associated with psychopathology …

Applications For Functional Data Analysis, Kacy D. Kane Jan 2023

Applications For Functional Data Analysis, Kacy D. Kane

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Functional Data Analysis is often used in the study of data that exists over a continuum, such as time. There are two datasets that will be considered here. For the first study we have a dataset on the efficacy of a lobectomy in reduction or elimination of epileptic seizures in patients. After an initial analysis of the dataset from a multinomial model perspective, we found that there were outliers in our dataset. From there, we considered a Multinomial Mixture Model to aid in the detection of outliers. In our second dataset we are considering a social robotics dataset where the …

The purpose of this dissertation was to understand the financial aid personnel’s perspective on the impacts of middle-income student loan borrowing. Student loan borrowing is a concern for many due to the current debt reaching extraordinary amounts. This research explored the impacts specifically on middle-income students as opposed to low- or high-income students. Middle-income, for the purposes of this research, was defined as students who are above the threshold for need-based aid, but still have a remaining need. Four themes occurred as a result of this research: 1) payment opportunities for middle-income students 2) opt in and opt out loan …

Dual Lives And Incongruent Selves: The Impact Of Culture And Parenting On The Development Of Self In Young Adults In Karachi, Pakistan, Sara Admani

SSLA Culminating Experience

This study explored the influence of culture and perceived parental expectations and control on the development of self. In addition, it examined the resulting incongruence between the ideal and real-self leading to false-self behaviour and mental health deterioration. Carl Rogers' theoretical framework on self, served as the basis for this research, which used an interpretative phenomenological analytic technique. In-depth interviews lasting between 30 and 45 minutes were used to gather the data. Eight participants (four men and four women) who attended the university Institute of Business Administration (IBA) and lived in Karachi were chosen using a combination of volunteer and …

Defi: Shadow Banking 2.0?, Hilary J. Allen

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The growth of so-called “shadow banking” was a significant contributor to the financial crisis of 2008, which had huge social costs that we still grapple with today. Our financial regulatory system still hasn’t fully figured out how to address the risks of the derivatives, securitizations, and money market mutual funds that comprised Shadow Banking 1.0, but we’re already facing the prospect o fShadow Banking 2.0in the form of decentralized finance, or “DeFi.” DeFi’s proponents speak of a future where sending money is as easy as sending a photograph–but money is not the same as a photograph. The stakes are much …

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Resistance exercise training (RET) is a common and well-established method to induce hypertrophy and improvement in strength. Interestingly, fish oil supplementation (FOS) may aug-ment RET-induced adaptations. However, few studies have been conducted on young, healthy adults.

Methods: A randomized, placebo-controlled design was used to determine the effect of FOS, a concentrated source of eicosapen-taenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), compared to placebo (PL) on RET-induced adaptations following a 10-week RET program (3 days·week−1). Body composition was measured by dual- energy x-ray absorptiometry (LBM, fat mass [FM], percent body fat [%BF]) and strength was measured by 1-repetition maximum bar-bell …

Short- And Long-Term Weight Loss Among Women Is Unrelated To Completed Exercise Within An Obesity Intervention Focused On Self-Regulation, James J. Annesi, Patricia G. Sevene

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate 1) if completed exercise amounts were associated with short- and long-term weight loss within a cognitive behavioral intervention and 2) if changes in theory-based psychosocial factors significantly explained weight change.

Methods: A total of 110 women with obesity participated in a yearlong treatment focused on self-regulation and were grouped based on their amount of completed exercise and assessed on changes in weight, self-regulation, and self-efficacy.

Results: There were significant overall improvements in all study measures from baseline–month 6 and baseline–month 12. Overall weight loss means (–5.8 and –5.3 kg, respectively) did …

The Mexican Underworld: An Exposé In Human Trafficking, Maria F. Barragan Trevino

GLO 100 Introduction to Global Studies: Policy Analysis Papers

Human trafficking is a continuously growing issue around the world. Mexico is a known hotspot for this due to its geographic location between South and Central America and the United States. This not only incentivizes trafficking across borders but attracts thousands of immigrants to Mexico. This group is one of the most susceptible to human trafficking, meaning there are millions of immigrants being trafficked throughout Mexico. This policy paper outlines the main factors that aggravate the prevalence of this crime, such as migration, gender violence, organized crime, and corruption. Furthermore, it evaluates two protocols and a program instituted by the …

The Taken Children Of Ukraine, Patricia Fronek, Karen S. Rotabi-Casares, Marina Lypovetska

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The invasion of Ukraine paints a complex picture for children. Russia has been accused of kidnapping and genocide, violating international rights and humanitarian laws. Some children taken by Russia will be adopted, all will be Russified, and the fate of others is unknown. Children of all ages taken from families or institutions have become weapons of war. Attempts at ‘rescues’ for the purpose of adoption mean children are also at risk from other actors. Social workers and NGOs play important roles in work with these children and their families. The Taken Children of Ukraine is the focus of this …
