To discuss student loan debt and racial injustice may seem to be disparate conversations, yet these two crises in our society are so ubiquitous that they feel like the water we swim in. We all feel the water is noxious and poisoning us. In A Dream Defaulted: The Student Loan Crisis among Black Borrowers, Houle and Addo patiently and thoroughly connect the quantitative data with the lived experiences of nearly fifty individuals who are both student loan borrowers and Black in order to show “that student debt is a new mechanism by which racial, social, and economic inequalities are …

Jones, Sarah Langford, Jessica Michel Dearte, John Schofield, Martin Thiel, Kayleigh J. Wyles

School of Psychology

As human behaviors play a crucial role in addressing the global threat of plastic pollution, it is vital to understand perceptions about marine plastic litter (MPL) and to develop interventions encouraging pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs). This study evaluates story writing as a window to explore perceptions and as an engagement activity to boost PEBs. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, schoolchildren from the East Pacific coast participated in this activity, each creating a story and answering a pre-post survey. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of 81 stories and 79 surveys show awareness of sources and impacts. Participants identified land and local pollution as significant …

Disagreement Matters: Exploring Internal Diversification For Redundant Attention In Generic Facial Action Analysis, Xiaotian Li, Zheng Zhang, Xiang Zhang, Taoyue Wang, Zhihua Li, Huiyuan Yang, Umur Ciftci, Qiang Ji, Jeffrey Cohn, Lijun Yin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of a diversification mechanism for building a more robust multi-attention system in generic facial action analysis. While previous multi-attention (e.g., visual attention and self-attention) research on facial expression recognition (FER) and Action Unit (AU) detection have been thoroughly studied to focus on "external attention diversification", where attention branches localize different facial areas, we delve into the realm of "internal attention diversification" and explore the impact of diverse attention patterns within the same Region of Interest (RoI). Our experiments reveal that variability in attention patterns significantly impacts model performance, indicating that unconstrained multi-attention plagued by redundancy …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The advent of smart digital devices and social media has shaped how consumers interact and transact with their financial institutions. Consumers increasingly want hyperpersonalised interactions that are more frequent and proactive, while financial institutions have a growing need to cater to consumers’ new demands. Financial institutions, such as banks, continuously adapt to the latest technologies to keep pace with evolving customer behaviours, needs, and experiences. One such emerging technology is artificial intelligence (AI). Many organisations realise the potential of AI; however, a human-centred AI system must be capable of understanding human characteristics and making decisions like humans. This paper presents …

(2023) Charles Peirce And The Community Of Inquiry, Maughn Rollins Gregory Jan 2023

(2023) Charles Peirce And The Community Of Inquiry, Maughn Rollins Gregory

Collected Papers of Maughn Rollins Gregory

This article reconstructs and clarifies Charles S. Peirce’s conception of the relationship between inquiry and community, responding to the widespread use of the phrase “community of inquiry” in educational, philosophical, and civic contexts. After tracing the genealogy of the phrase, the essay offers a systematic account of Peirce’s theory of inquiry by identifying five central elements—anti-intuitionism, fallibilism, the belief–doubt–inquiry cycle, the logic of inquiry, and self-correction—and by explicating three indispensable roles that community plays within that theory: semiosis, corroboration, and mutual criticism. The article then examines the first educational adaptation of this idea in the work of Matthew Lipman, Ann …

Comment: Unpaid Internships And The Rural-Urban Divide, Susan D. Carle Jan 2023

Comment: Unpaid Internships And The Rural-Urban Divide, Susan D. Carle

Washington and Lee Law Review

In this Comment, I first note how much the existing literature on unpaid internships under the FLSA focuses on urban contexts. Next, I briefly sketch some of the literature on the rural-urban divide, a topic I argue needs much more analysis from legal scholars in coming years. Third, I show how Morris’s work brings together these two literatures, which to this point have not been in conversation with each other. Finally, I note a few questions Morris’s work raises for future attention.

Zerschlagen: German Unification And Divided Identity, Harrison Quinn Jan 2023

Zerschlagen: German Unification And Divided Identity, Harrison Quinn

Honors Theses

The Unification of East and West Germany ended one of the Cold War’s longest divides, but only on paper. After decades under a unified German state, former East Germans face lower standards of living, economic opportunities, and access to national utilities compared to their Western counterparts. This inequality stems from the bifurcated German identity, which remains largely unaddressed amid German state ambitions for a central role in international institutions. The failure to properly acknowledge East German identity and the suppression thereof demonstrates the failure of Unification to unite the German nation. Political ambitions outweighed a true reconciliation of German nationhood, …

Congress Is From Mars & Courts Are From Venus: Reconceptualizing Our Understanding Of Interbranch Relations, Lauren Hanson-Figueroa, Alexandra Piccirillo, Amy Steigerwalt Jan 2023

Congress Is From Mars & Courts Are From Venus: Reconceptualizing Our Understanding Of Interbranch Relations, Lauren Hanson-Figueroa, Alexandra Piccirillo, Amy Steigerwalt

Emory Law Journal

In this Article, we argue for a reconceptualization of how to understand legislative-judicial relations in the United States. We propose that the Legislative and Judicial Branches of the U.S. government broadly reflect gender-stereotypical relations and divisions of labor in terms of both function and design. Congress was intended to be agentic and public, securely positioned as the public, lawmaking body; it fits the prototypical definition of Arendt’s “space of appearance.” The Legislative Branch can be conceptualized as men in a patriarchal culture, given agency and invited to action. In contrast, the courts reside in a more private sphere, toiling away …

Procedural Justice And The Shadow Docket, Taraleigh Davis, Sara C. Benesh Jan 2023

Procedural Justice And The Shadow Docket, Taraleigh Davis, Sara C. Benesh

Emory Law Journal

This Article critically examines the role of procedural justice in shaping public perceptions of the U.S. Supreme Court’s legitimacy, particularly in light of recent Court actions, including the leak of a major opinion and the increasing, potentially politicized, use of its shadow docket. Drawing from the procedural justice model—which posits that legitimacy is primarily founded on the decision-making processes and principled judgments of the Court—this Article investigates whether the decline in confidence experienced by the Court can be attributed, at least in part, to its shadow docket.

Utilizing an experimental survey conducted over three critical time points—coinciding with the leak …

Alternative Facts: The Strategy Of Judicial Rhetoric, Tonja Jacobi, Eryn Mascia Jan 2023

Alternative Facts: The Strategy Of Judicial Rhetoric, Tonja Jacobi, Eryn Mascia

Emory Law Journal

Studies have established the influence of ideology on the answers justices give to legal questions; this study shows that the questions themselves are often selected, framed, and phrased in a way that promotes ideologically-driven answers. By examining a variety of linguistic techniques used to describe just the facts of constitutional criminal procedure cases—separate from the legal analysis—we show the justices are engaging in highly strategic behavior. The facts included, omitted, or emphasized vary with the ideology of the justices and are predictable not just based on voting behavior in other criminal procedure cases but in all Supreme Court cases. We …

The Effects Of Age On Working Memory Capacity And Neural Function, Jasmin P. Joshi Jan 2023

The Effects Of Age On Working Memory Capacity And Neural Function, Jasmin P. Joshi

CMC Senior Theses

Do age-related differences in working memory capacities predict specific neural responses? Theories of working memory (WM) suggest that there are different types of WM processes that are associated with specific neural networks and WM declines with age. Event-related potentials (ERPs) evoked by certain tasks are also associated with specific cognitive functions. This study investigates whether specific types of working memory capacities are related to corresponding neural indices of attention and context updating (P3; visual oddball task) or semantic (N400; word-pair paradigm task) processes. In addition, it examines whether age affects this relationship. Younger adults (n=30; ages 18-23) and older adults …

The Impact Of Compensation Framing On Work Relationships, Jack Wixson Jan 2023

The Impact Of Compensation Framing On Work Relationships, Jack Wixson

Honors Theses and Capstones

This paper attempts to understand the effects of compensation framing on performance, work relationships, and organizational citizenship behavior. 108 study participants worked under either a bonus or penalty framed contract to complete an effort-based task. The results of the study indicate that employees will exert more effort to get to know their supervisor and demonstrate more good behavior under a bonus frame versus a penalty frame. These findings are important for companies to recognize how different compensation structures impact their employees. Companies can be more successful if they put in more time and effort to better understand their employees.

The Transgressive Rhetoric Of Standup Comedy In China, Dan Chen, Gengsong Gao Jan 2023

The Transgressive Rhetoric Of Standup Comedy In China, Dan Chen, Gengsong Gao

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Public discourse under authoritarian rule is not monolithic. Yet how popular rhetoric engages with the hegemonic rhetoric in the same discursive space remains understudied. This article examines the rhetoric of a standup comedy show in China, streamed online and widely popular among Chinese millennials, to understand how alternative views on social issues can coexist with the hegemonic rhetoric. Using critical discourse analysis, it argues that some standup comedy performances transgress the hegemonic rhetoric of positive energy without outright subversion. Comedians use subversive affirmation, self-deprecation, ambiguity, absurd fantasy, and irony to present alternative viewpoints on social issues of broad interest, such …
