An Evaluation Of Prompting To Teach Children To Ask For Help In A Virtual Classroom, Katherine Griffith Brock
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students have been forced to learn online. However, more information is needed about effective strategies for promoting active engagement in the online classroom, particularly the impact of peer modeling. This study investigated peer modeling and behavioral skills training to increase hand raising and question asking/answering behavior in six elementary school students. The study employed a multiple baseline across participants design, with data collected live during Zoom sessions by three research assistants, one acting as the teacher and two acting as peer models. Latency to speech was also coded subsequently to the live session …

Cabin Crew Members’ Silence: A Qualitative Study With Cabin Attendants, Seda Ceken, Pinar Unsal
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Silence among flight crews has been one of the significant causes of aviation incidents and/or accidents. This study aims to explore why flight attendants remain silent during flights and/or do not report errors after the end of the flight. For this purpose, semi-structured online interviews were conducted with 21 flight attendants. The data were analyzed through content analysis using the MAXQDA 22 Qualitative Analysis Program. Themes and coding related to the research question were obtained by analyzing the scripts with creative coding techniques. Nine themes were identified by the content analysis, namely "poor relationship with cabin supervisors/pilots", "the lack of …

Biocybersecurity is an evolving discipline that aims to identify the gaps and risks associated with the convergence of Biology (the science of life and living organisms) and cybersecurity (the science, study, and theory of cyberspace and cybernetics) to protect the bioeconomy. The biological industries’ increased reliance on digitization, automation, and computing power has resulted in benefits for the scientific community, it has simultaneously multiplied the risk factors associated with industrial espionage and the protection of data both commercial and proprietary. The sensitive and potentially destructive power of this data and its access inherently poses a risk to the national and …

ASHAA A’MAA, WE WERE ALWAYS HERE
Abstract
This research is an in-depth exposé of Anishinaabeg knowledge surrounding niizh manitoag, two-spirit ways of knowing. General collections of two-spirit writings and contributions in the past thirty years uncovered a noticeable gap in the research around Anishinaabeg's two-spirit knowledge, stories, and teachings.
Using Indigenous research paradigms, this knowledge base posits a unique theoretical, conceptual framework identified as an Indigenous Relational Theory. The theory delineates a way of knowing and understanding Anishinaabe niizh manitoag, two-spirit identity. The Indigenous Relational Theory consists of four models, Relational Cultural Model, Relational Identity …

Land-use planning for modern societies requires technical competence as well as social competence. We therefore propose an integrative solution enabling better land-use planning and management through better-informed decision-making. We adapt a method developed for cross-disciplinary team building to identify the stakeholders and their various objectives and value systems. We use these results to populate artificial societies embedded into a dynamic data analytics framework as a tool to identify, explore, and visualize the challenges resulting from the different objectives and value systems in land-use planning and management. To prove the feasibility of the proposed solution, we present two use cases from …

Large language models (LLMs) excel in providing natural language responses that sound authoritative, reflect knowledge of the context area, and can present from a range of varied perspectives. Agent-based models and simulations consist of simulated agents that interact within a simulated environment to explore societal, social, and ethical, among other, problems. Simulated agents generate large volumes of data and discerning useful and relevant content is an onerous task. LLMs can help in communicating agents' perspectives on key life events by providing natural language narratives. However, these narratives should be factual, transparent, and reproducible. Therefore, we present a structured narrative prompt …

Despite the Civil Right Act and a myriad of DEI initiatives that claim to create an anti-discrimination and antiracism environment, Black women leaders still experience racism, discrimination, and disrespect in the workplace. Black women are less likely to be promoted than their White counterparts, and over 25% of Black women reported that their social identities led to a missed advancement opportunity (McKinsey & Lean In, 2022). Society is in the midst of a unique time in history where government institutions, willingly or forced, are having difficult conversations regarding institutional racism. The national movement that declares racism as a public health …
Procedural Justice And Crime Control: Latinos’ Perceptions Of The Minneapolis Police, Giovanni Veliz
Procedural Justice And Crime Control: Latinos’ Perceptions Of The Minneapolis Police, Giovanni Veliz
School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations
Deadly encounters between U.S. police and marginalized communities, such as the high-profile deaths of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky, and George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, have resulted in fractured police–community relationships and civil unrest. Elected officials, police executives, and scholars have investigated various strategies to repair these relationships. Efforts to improve public perceptions of law enforcement have frequently focused on procedural justice training and research. Many academic studies and police initiatives have overlooked the perspectives of Latino individuals and communities. This study asks: How do Latinos perceive the police? Do they believe that police treat Latinos and others fairly? Do …

Struggling writers often need more instructional support than is present in commercially available process writing curricula. In this study, we employed a one-group, pretest–posttest design to evaluate whether 41 struggling primary grade writers who attended a university-based summer learning program would increase in writing ability, given a commercially available process writing unit differentiated to provide more support. A Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) unit was modified for use in the program: The content was streamlined, the volume of writing was reduced, the instructional explicitness was strengthened, increased feedback and student product goals were integrated, and the instruction was …

Objective:
This study qualitatively examined client’s definition and experiences of failed psychotherapy.
Method:
Thirteen clients were interviewed by phone regarding their experience of failed psychotherapy. Data were analyzed using consensual qualitative research (CQR).
Results:
Participants defined failed psychotherapy as negatively affecting clients, involving problems in the psychotherapy relationship, and not meeting clients’ goals. When describing specific experiences of failed psychotherapy, participants gradually recognized the failure themselves, but the recognition was sometimes facilitated by others. Pre-termination, the failed psychotherapy yielded negative effects (worsened symptoms/functioning, deteriorating relationship, not addressing clients’ concerns). Participants perceived therapists’ contributions as involving action (insensitive/inappropriate responses to participants’ …

Objective
Assessing and accommodating patient preferences is integral to evidence-based practice. This qualitative study sought to explore patient perspectives and experiences of preference work in psychotherapy.
Methods
Participants were 13 UK-based patients who had completed up to 24 sessions of a collaborative–integrative psychotherapy. Ten participants identified as female and three as male. Interviews were conducted at endpoint and analyzed using a team-based, consensual qualitative research approach.
Results
Three superordinate domains were developed: Preferences Themselves, Process of Working with Preferences in Psychotherapy, and Effect of Preference Work (or its Absence). Patients typically wanted leadership, challenge, and input from their psychotherapist, and …
The Craft Of Integrating And Layering Leadership Theories And Models For Application, Benjamin Correia-Harker

To develop transformative experiences, educators must meaningfully ground leadership development interventions in theories and models that reflect how leadership is conceptualized and operationalized within a community and/or institution. Since no single framework perfectly captures the socially constructed and multifaceted nature of leadership, educators must often pull from and weave together multiple theories and models when creating leadership development programs. This article explores consideration for leadership theory application through contextual and audience alignment, as well as considerations for integration of theory that address underlying theoretical assumptions, framework gaps, and developmental readiness. Reflection prompts are provided for each consideration so educators can …

Background
Adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD) face unique challenges, especially during the critical health care transition from pediatric to adult care. The purpose of this study was to gather the perspectives of adolescents living with SCD and to describe their self-care management experiences prior to their move into the adult health care system.
Methods
Guided by the Theory of Self-Care Management for Sickle Cell Disease, this qualitative descriptive study used semi-structured interviews with 11 adolescents with SCD (M = 16.63 years, SD = 1.15). In addition to a demographic survey, adolescents answered interview questions about their perceptions of their …

This chapter reviews the research evidence for the immediate, intermediate, and distal outcomes of four therapist behaviors originally included in the Norcross and Lambert book, Psychotherapy Relationships That Work, published in 2019: affirmation/validation, self-disclosure, immediacy, and rupture repairs. Affirmation/validation was judged to be demonstrably effective in terms of distal outcomes but as having no evidence for immediate and intermediate outcomes; self-disclosure and immediacy were judged as having insufficient evidence for immediate outcomes but no evidence for intermediate and distal outcomes; and rupture repair was judged as probably effective in terms of distal outcomes but as having insufficient evidence for …

In this autoethnography, we—four Hispanic Serving Institution colleagues at the USA–Mexican frontera—share our process of building a collective where a plural, organic, vulnerable, and recursive space was created. In this space, through readings, conversations, feedings, discussions, and memories, un/anticipated stories emerge…in our unchoreographed writings, we whirl, twirl, collide, and craft our collective space, which was at once chaotic, cathartic, and sustaining.

In this paper, the author analyses learning as a function of the threshold between parties and ideas. Using Bakhtinian dialogic theory, literacy learning in particular is envisioned as a dialogue of the threshold. This instructional threshold is viewed both in pedagogical and biological terms. The physiological process of learning is described, making a biological case for instructional scaffolding and the gradual release of responsibility in the classroom. The dialogue of different disciplines serves as integration of several thresholds and further strengthening of learning. Curriculum integration is then promoted as a means to lasting learning.

This is a reflection on machine and human contributions to lawyering in the digital age. Increasingly capable machines can already unleash massive processing power on vast stores of discovery and research data to assess relevancies and, at times, to predict legal outcomes. At the same time, there is wide acceptance, at least among legal academics, of the conclusions from behavioral psychology that slow, deliberative “System 2” thinking (perhaps replicated computationally) needs to control the heuristics and biases to which fast, intuitive “System 1” thinking is prone. Together, those trends portend computational deliberation – artificial intelligence or machine learning – substituting …

Cross-Generational Effects Of Workplace Spirituality On Employee Job And Life Satisfaction, Bobbie Bannerman, Robin Snipes
Cross-Generational Effects Of Workplace Spirituality On Employee Job And Life Satisfaction, Bobbie Bannerman, Robin Snipes
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
Since the 1990’s, the concept of workplace spirituality has grown in popularity.Contrary to the public notion of spirituality, workplace spirituality does not have much to dowith organized religion but more with the connectedness one has with other people at work.During the COVID-19 pandemic this sense of connectedness has waned, leaving employees witha lower attachment to their organizations. Workplace spirituality has been correlated withemployee job satisfaction, which impacts productivity, customer satisfaction, turnover, andultimately the firm’s bottom line. Job satisfaction also has an impact on one’s overall lifesatisfaction. Results of this study suggest that employee age may moderate the relationshipbetween workplace spirituality …
