A Phenomenological Examination Of Value Recognition And Development In Mental Health Counselors-In-Training, Luke Erskine Steinman
A Phenomenological Examination Of Value Recognition And Development In Mental Health Counselors-In-Training, Luke Erskine Steinman
Dissertations
The importance of values in therapy is well recognized and documented in the field of mental health counseling, despite this, the implementation of value-based instruction into formal training is often unclear and inconsistent. As such, the purpose of this study was to investigate how CITs recognized their personal and professional values; the impact those values have on their work and personal lives; how their values developed throughout the course of their training; and what factors influenced that development. This was done with the hopes of better understanding how these areas shape their professional practice. Research questions examined how CITs recognize …
Social Correlates Of Trauma And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: The Importance Of Context, Lukoye Atwoli, Linnet Ongeri
Social Correlates Of Trauma And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: The Importance Of Context, Lukoye Atwoli, Linnet Ongeri
Internal Medicine, East Africa
Understanding trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) requires a contextual perspective that considers historical legacies, social environments, and cultural realities. This paper draws on empirical evidence from Kenya and Uganda to demonstrate the limitations of applying trauma frameworks developed in high-income countries to African contexts. Findings from the Orphaned and Separated Children’s Assessment Related to Their Health and Well-Being (OSCAR) study challenge assumptions about care environments. The study reveals higher PTSD rates among orphans in family-based settings compared to institutional care, and highlights the protective roles of religion and social support. The Neuropsychiatric Genetics of African Populations-Psychosis (NeuroGAP-Psychosis) study provides …

This study explores the nature of preservice elementary teachers’ mathematics identity and possible selves and identifies shifts in their mathematics identity or possible selves over the course of a place value unit during the semester during a course on mathematics content for elementary teachers. Drawing on narrative identity and possible selves theory, this qualitative multi-case study examined the mathematics identity and possible selves of preservice elementary teachers enrolled in a mathematics content course. Course assignments were used as data sources and included written narratives, future-oriented reflections, drawings, and course artifacts. Individual cases were analyzed, and were followed by a cross-cases …
Mental Health Representation And Audience Interpretation In Contemporary Streaming Media, Caitlyn Freeman
Mental Health Representation And Audience Interpretation In Contemporary Streaming Media, Caitlyn Freeman
Communications and Digital Media Theses
This study looks at streaming television as a place where ideas about mental health are shaped and communicated. These shows communicate mental health through storytelling, rather than simply reflected. Instead of viewing series as realistic depictions of psychological struggle, this analysis focuses on different elements to understand how audiences understand mental illness. This study focuses on patterns in how mental health is presented to audiences, including whether it is shown as an emotional conflict, ongoing experience, or a moment of crisis within the story. Using a qualitative analysis, the research analyzes selected episodes from each series through a codebook with …
The Relationship Between Sports Related Head Injuries, Mental Health And Academic Performance In University Student-Athletes, Odyssey Keller
The Relationship Between Sports Related Head Injuries, Mental Health And Academic Performance In University Student-Athletes, Odyssey Keller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Student athletes face many challenges when it comes to participating in team sports, one of the most notable being sport-related head injuries. Concussions are a growing concern since they have the potential to impact mental health and academic performance long-term. While many athletes report recovery within weeks, some continue to struggle with impairments in their psychological functioning and overall mental well-being that interferes with academic performance over time. Many of the standardized protocols in place for concussion management vary across institutions. This study aimed to address gaps in the existing literature by assessing concussion history, mental health and academic challenges …
"Am I A Man Or A Muppet": A Rhetorical Analysis Of Generative Ai’S Representation Of Gender, Jessica Boaz
"Am I A Man Or A Muppet": A Rhetorical Analysis Of Generative Ai’S Representation Of Gender, Jessica Boaz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how generative artificial intelligence constructs and performs gender roles through a rhetorical analysis of the fully AI-generated podcast Fairytale Forensics. Drawing on theories of constitutive rhetoric, stereotyping, and McLuhan’s approach to the medium, this thesis investigates how AI-generated hosts interpret classic fairy tales while simultaneously reproducing and negotiating gender norms through the lens of prosopopoeia, metonymy and synecdoche. These performances rely on normative gender stereotypes that align with broader societal expectations, thereby potentially reinforcing existing cultural assumptions about masculinity and femininity. Ultimately, it demonstrates that AI-generated discourse does not merely reflect human biases but actively participates in …
Nonprofit Youth Sports Governance Structures As Contexts For Positive Youth Development: How Usa Swimming's Local Swimming Committee Boards Provide The "Big Three" Of Positive Youth Development Settings, Emily B. Swett
All Dissertations
This study examines positive youth development (PYD) within youth sports governance, specifically USA Swimming's Local Swimming Committee (LSC) boards of directors, a context largely overlooked in PYD research, which typically focuses on on-field experiences.
Using the "Big Three" PYD framework (positive youth-adult relationships, life skill-building opportunities, and youth leadership and contribution), the study employed an explanatory mixed methods design. A quantitative survey was distributed to LSC athlete and non-athlete board members, followed by semi-structured interviews.
Survey data from 27 athletes and 157 non-athletes revealed strong levels of all "Big Three" components across both groups. Statistical analyses found no significant differences …

Versatile Exoskeleton Control Paradigms For Agile Human Locomotion: Task-Agnostic And Stability-Augmented Assistance, Miao Yu
All Dissertations
Lower-limb exoskeletons have shown great potential for assisting human locomotion, but designing controllers that provide assistance across diverse locomotor tasks and under external perturbations remains a major challenge. Many existing controllers for steady-state walking rely on pre-defined reference trajectories, which constrain voluntary human motion and limit adaptability across tasks. Moreover, they usually assume stable walking, while their performance under unstable conditions remains largely unexplored. In addition, existing gait stability augmentation controllers are often reactive rather than proactive to unstable conditions. In this dissertation, we propose control frameworks that preserve voluntary human motion while addressing two major challenges: providing task-agnostic assistance …
Progressive Digital Health Engagement And Genetic Testing Intention: Evidence From The Genetic And Rare Disease Evaluation (Garde) Health System Trial And The Health Information National Trends Survey (Hints7), Emma Coen
All Dissertations
Background Digital health technologies including patient portals, internet based health information seeking, and electronic communication platforms are central mechanisms for genomic risk communication and recruitment into genetic testing. Engagement with these tools occurs progressively rather than uniformly, and structural inequities may contribute to staged disengagement along digital health pathways. Identifying where disengagement occurs and whether it differs by demographic and contextual characteristics is critical for advancing equitable genomic implementation.
Objectives This dissertation evaluates progressive digital engagement and genetic testing intention across two complementary data sources. Aim 1 examines sequential engagement within a health system genomic outreach trial. Aim 2 evaluates …

Algorithmic Resilience Memory: Designing Agentic Ai Systems For Organizational Learning And Climate-Crisis Adaptation, Harsha Sammangi, Aditya Jagatha, Navyasri Maddukuri
Research & Publications
Climate disruption has become a persistent organizational condition rather than an episodic event, yet most information systems designed to support organizational resilience treat each disruption as an isolated incident. Existing digital resilience platforms, disaster recovery systems, and AI-driven decision support tools lack the capacity to accumulate, encode, and reuse organizational knowledge across successive climate-related crises. This paper introduces Algorithmic Resilience Memory (ARM), a novel IS construct defined as an AI-enabled organizational capability through which agentic AI systems sense climate-related disruptions, encode prior organizational responses, preserve decision rationale, generate contextually adaptive recommendations, and reconfigure future actions through structured outcome feedback. Drawing …

An Expertise-Based Approach To Training Decision-Making And Situational Awareness For Basketball Referees, Scott Warner Boatright
An Expertise-Based Approach To Training Decision-Making And Situational Awareness For Basketball Referees, Scott Warner Boatright
Dissertations
Expertise, rapid decision-making, and situational awareness are key components of high performance in many areas, including basketball officiating. Traditional methods of providing feedback on performance to basketball referees rely heavily on broadcast video and rule review, which does not adequately target the perceptual-cognitive skills associated with rapid and dynamic decision-making. The current study developed and evaluated a 360-degree video virtual reality (VR) Expertise-Based Training (XBT) program designed to accelerate expertise in intermediate-level basketball referees. Using think-aloud protocol, conducted with an expert basketball referee, expert judgments and rational were elicited and implemented as Expert-Model Feedback within the referee training program. Twelve …
From Structure To Support: An Integrative Model Of Leadership, Emotional Exhaustion, Role Clarity, And Daoist Moderation, Aradhna Mohan
From Structure To Support: An Integrative Model Of Leadership, Emotional Exhaustion, Role Clarity, And Daoist Moderation, Aradhna Mohan
Dissertations
Rooted in the understanding that effective leadership significantly influences organizational outcomes, this study examines process-oriented relationships between leader initiating structure and subordinate outcomes. Specifically, it extends the leadership literature by focusing on the cognitive resources underlying initiating structure behaviors, such as role-related clarity, that may enhance positive subordinate outcomes and mitigate negative ones. The study also incorporates an underexamined Eastern leadership style, Daoist Water-Like Leadership, and explores its associations with leader initiating structure and consideration. Guided by the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, this research assesses the effects of initiating structure and Daoist leadership on emotional exhaustion, examines the relationship between …
Adoption And The Illusion Of Choice After Dobbs V. Jackson Women’S Health, Solangel Maldonado
Adoption And The Illusion Of Choice After Dobbs V. Jackson Women’S Health, Solangel Maldonado
Cardozo Law Review
Thalia, a twenty-eight-year-old mother of two, has struggled with a substance use disorder for several years. Her children, ages five and seven, are in foster care. Thalia was homeless when she learned that she was fourteen weeks pregnant. She wanted to have an abortion, but her state banned abortions after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The closest abortion care provider in a neighboring state was 400 miles away, and a medical (non-surgical) abortion was no longer an option.
Unable to access abortion care, Thalia was forced to carry the pregnancy to term. Her …

Results indicated that selfesteem and loneliness were not significant predictors of conformity, and conformity did not predict online shopping or gambling behaviors. Additionally, self-esteem, loneliness, and conformity …
The Reliance On Children In Atomic Bomb Literature, Chenyeng Vang
The Reliance On Children In Atomic Bomb Literature, Chenyeng Vang
English Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper explores the conventions of children’s literature, or what children embody in literature, and how it functions within atomic bomb literature in three ways: filling the gap of the unreliability of language, pushing past binaries through its queerness, and universalizing messages of peace to focus on a broad vision of a better future. Analysis involves atomic bomb literature written within the first five decades of the bombings, from 1945 to 1995. This research additionally seeks to answer the question: why children’s stories? This paper concludes that the dependence on children within atomic bomb literature hinges upon constructions of children …
Survey Of Medieval Literature On Maternal Mortality, Postpartum Care, And Birth Trauma In Relation To The Crisis In Arkansas, Paige Q. Thompson
Survey Of Medieval Literature On Maternal Mortality, Postpartum Care, And Birth Trauma In Relation To The Crisis In Arkansas, Paige Q. Thompson
English Undergraduate Honors Theses
When the general public thinks of childbirth in the Middle Ages, they think of death and danger. However, Arkansas has the highest maternal mortality rate in the entire United States, and many of those deaths are preventable. There have been previous analyses on different medieval texts as well as research into modern Arkansas, but none have made a direct connection between the two subjects. By analyzing medieval literature to understand cultural norms surrounding childbirth and postpartum care, patterns can be traced to modern Arkansas, where needless deaths are still prevalent. Ultimately, medieval texts demonstrate cultural attitudes surrounding blame toward women …
Bound To Status: A Comparative Study Of Public And Private College Libraries, Lilianna Fujita
Bound To Status: A Comparative Study Of Public And Private College Libraries, Lilianna Fujita
Anthropology
This ethnographic study compares student culture and behavior at two upstate New York universities — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), a private STEM-focused institution, and the University at Albany (UAlbany), a public research university. Through two rounds of participant observation conducted in each school's library and three semi-structured student interviews, the author examines how institutional type, admissions selectivity, campus environment, and resource allocation shape student social dynamics, gender experiences, and overall well-being. The author argues that differences in student behavior reflect not only individual student dispositions but broader institutional decisions about who is admitted and what social infrastructure is supported.
Influence Of Asd On Morality, Spencer Brown
Influence Of Asd On Morality, Spencer Brown
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Autism is known as a developmental disorder that incurs a social skills deficit on those that have it. This social skills deficit has been proposed to affect further aspects of autistic people’s psychology such as empathy and morality. Studies using the moral stages theory of development have found that those with autism are deficient in these proposed social skills. However, further research into how morality and empathy, as well as the results of experiments looking into morality in autistic populations, have brought the accuracy of moral reasoning into doubt. In the present paper, we review the literature on how empathy, …
Reviving The Mill District: Post-Industrial Revitalization Through Recreational Development, Kylee Frisbie
Reviving The Mill District: Post-Industrial Revitalization Through Recreational Development, Kylee Frisbie
Architecture Theses
Transforming post-industrial cities through recreational development examines how medium-sized communities can transition from declining industries to new economic identities by expanding sports and recreation infrastructure. Centered on Sartell, Minnesota, this study addresses the civic and economic void left behind from the destruction of the Verso Paper Mill in 2012. Using the “research by design” method utilizes qualitative analysis, a community-focused survey, and case studies showing how a hybrid sports complex can function as an economic engine and replace a community’s lost identity. The findings show that these facilities activate “sports-led regeneration” by attracting regional engagement, generating annual economic impact while …
How Can Architects Design Spaces That Foster Active Participation And Connection Within Communities, Tyler Michael Gillen
How Can Architects Design Spaces That Foster Active Participation And Connection Within Communities, Tyler Michael Gillen
Architecture Theses
This thesis explores how architecture can strengthen community engagement through the design of civic infrastructure. Focusing on a proposed Fire Station Three in Moorhead, Minnesota, the project investigates how a fire station can function as both an emergency response facility and a community gathering space. As Moorhead continues to expand southward, increasing demands on emergency services reveal the need for additional infrastructure while also presenting an opportunity to rethink the civic role of fire stations within growing suburban communities. Through site analysis, precedent studies, fire station tours, and architectural research, the project develops a design proposal that integrates operational efficiency …
Transformall: Redeveloping The Suburban Retail Space To Save It From Decay, Tate Trushenski
Transformall: Redeveloping The Suburban Retail Space To Save It From Decay, Tate Trushenski
Architecture Theses
The decline of traditional retail has left behind expansive "Greyfield" sites underutilized shopping malls that disrupt the suburban fabric. This thesis presents Transformall, a comprehensive master plan for the Albertville Mall site in Minnesota, reimagining the 430,000 square foot footprint as a resilient, mixed-use town center. By employing adaptive reuse and strategic densification, the project transitions the site from a car-centric retail island into a walkable, community-oriented district.
Key interventions include the preservation of existing structural grids, the introduction of diverse housing typologies, and the implementation of green infrastructure. The resulting master plan demonstrates that suburban redevelopment can move beyond …
The Social Seam: Combating Social Isolation Through Architecture, Elissa Hammrich
The Social Seam: Combating Social Isolation Through Architecture, Elissa Hammrich
Architecture Theses
A lack of walkable environments and well-supported public spaces has created a crisis of social disconnection across the United States. Historically, dating back to the public squares of ancient Greece, the public realm was a place of communal ritual from which citizens drew their primary identity. Today, however, modern cities are driven by commerce and technology, rapidly losing the genuine spaces that create face-to-face human interaction. By prioritizing the efficient movement of vehicles and goods over human connection, it has left behind fractured, isolated communities.
This thesis explores architectural strategies to combat this social isolation, focusing specifically on the Near …
Nature And Nurture: The Cognitive Image Of A Building And Its Site, Treyton Hardy
Nature And Nurture: The Cognitive Image Of A Building And Its Site, Treyton Hardy
Architecture Theses
Current specialized care facilities often prioritize functionality over the emotional and psychological well-being of their residents. For individuals experiencing dementia, illegible architectural layouts hinder spatial problem-solving and cause severe disorientation. This thesis introduces "Nature & Nurture," a comprehensive dementia recovery and research community proposed for Duluth, Minnesota. By utilizing Kevin Lynch’s Five Elements of the cognitive image, this project establishes an evidence-based architectural framework designed to reduce cognitive load. The design integrates multi-sensory wayfinding cues, continuous circulation paths, and hyper-local landmarks to facilitate environmental recognition rather than demanding complex memory recall. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates how legible spatial design can …

Reviving The Mall: Adaptive Reuse Strategies For Transforming 1970s Shopping Mall Into Community Third Places In Willmar, Mn, Holly Anna Carlson
Architecture Theses
The decline of 1970s-era shopping malls across the United States has left behind large, underutilized spaces that no longer serve their original purpose. Once important centers of community life, many malls now reflect the social, economic, and spatial challenges created by suburban decline and changing consumer habits. This thesis explores how adaptive reuse strategies can transform failing malls into community-centered “third places,” informal gathering spaces outside of home and work that encourage social interaction and civic engagement. Through the analysis of mall redevelopment case studies across the United States, this research examines design interventions that promote inclusivity, resilience, and environmental …
From Radiance To Resonance: A Human-Centered City Between Geometry And Humanity: Reconciling Modernist Ideals With Human-Centered Design, Christen Zeetu Doe
From Radiance To Resonance: A Human-Centered City Between Geometry And Humanity: Reconciling Modernist Ideals With Human-Centered Design, Christen Zeetu Doe
Architecture Theses
This thesis investigates how architectural practice can shift from top-down, modernist planning paradigms toward an observational methodology grounded in lived experience. Engaging with the legacy of Le Corbusier’s Radiant City, it critiques the pursuit of universal order and efficiency that often suppresses the nuances of everyday life. Drawing from Georges Perec’s attentive documentation of mundane urban moments, the project develops a process of “moment mapping,” where spatial understanding emerges through observation rather than imposed form. These collected moments are then abstracted into architectural elevations and spatial constructs, translating temporal, sensory experiences into built form. The thesis is situated within a …
A Translation Of Culture, Dinithi Warnakula
A Translation Of Culture, Dinithi Warnakula
Architecture Theses
This thesis explores the processes of shared occupation, layering and translation in architecture as a means of cultural cohabitation. Located on the Keating Channel waterfront in Toronto, the project explores themes of migration, shifting identities and communal life in an urban context. The thesis, beginning with the theories of Vilém Flusser and Daniel Heller-Roazen, addresses translation as linguistic and geographical condition. The layered Sinhala, Tamil and English characters produce an artefact that throws dynamic shadows that interact with the physical architecture through tiered thresholds, framed views and filtered light conditions. This created cultural commons, spaces for everyday interaction, narration, socialisation …
Threshold: Transitional Living For Former Foster Youth, Regan Cole
Threshold: Transitional Living For Former Foster Youth, Regan Cole
Architecture Theses
Threshold is a transitional living facility designed for former foster youth aging into adulthood and independent living. The project explores how architecture can move beyond providing shelter to support healing, stability, dignity, and personal growth for individuals who have experienced displacement, institutionalization, and housing insecurity. Grounded in trauma-informed design principles and philosophical theories of dwelling, belonging, and liminality, the project investigates how space can transform transition from a condition of uncertainty into one of becoming. Located in Brookfield, Illinois, the facility integrates housing with educational programs, job training, counseling, healthcare, childcare, and communal spaces within a single supportive environment. The …
