Analytical Solutions For Transitional Flow Around Hydrometeors: Implications For Particle Dynamics And Atmospheric Modeling, Ahmad Talaei, Timothy J. Garrett

Physics Student Research

Accurate modeling of hydrometeor dynamics is critical for advancing weather and climate predictions. However, this remains a long-standing challenge in atmospheric science, particularly within the transitional Reynolds number regime, due to the lack of analytical solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations. This study presents two analytical solutions for two-dimensional, incompressible, and viscous flow around a sphere, addressing the gap between low and high Reynolds number regimes. The first framework, an extension of classical expansion methods using hypergeometric, provides a direct analytical relation that characterizes separation angle across the transitional regime. To address post- separation dynamics, a second formulation based on a …

A Better Great Plains: Bridging The Implementation Gap For A Better Future, David W. Sandahl

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Northern Great Plains is experiencing extensive native grassland loss and landscape degradation, jeopardizing both ecological integrity and the socio-economic systems that rely upon these ecosystems. In an early effort to lessen degradation, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) which generated ecosystem services benefits such as reduced soil erosion, improved water quality, and increased species diversity through the retirement of cropland and rangeland for 10- or 15-year contracts. However, CRP has not fully modernized alongside today’s agriculturalists and adoption remains shaped by an historically fraught socio-political context characterized by deep-seated mistrust between ranchers, …

Nutrition In Context: How Cultural Beliefs, Gender Norms, Social Environments, And Interventions Shape Maternal Nutrition In Nepal, Rebecca Fan

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Maternal nutrition is recognized as one of the most significant and modifiable determinants of persistent inequities in maternal and neonatal health. In Nepal, what women are able to eat and how they experience pregnancy are all shaped by a complex interplay of cultural beliefs, gendered expectations, household dynamics, structural barriers, and nutrition intervention efforts. This study examines these intersecting factors through ethnographic accounts, peer-reviewed scientific literature, expert interviews, and an analysis of current interventions operating across different levels. Specifically, to understand the social environments shaping maternal nutrition, the paper explores cultural beliefs and misconceptions surrounding food, women’s limited control over …

Anterior Cingulate Cortex Connectivity And The Role In Neuroticism: A Diffusion-Weighted-Imaging-Based Investigation Of Limbic And Prefrontal Circuits., Jake Cox Ii

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Neuroticism is a trait which has been shown to significantly predict psychopathology. Investigating its neurobiological underpinnings may uncover a brain-based relationship that allows clinicians to conceptualize a shared predispositional factor across multiple psychopathologies, implicating treatment protocols. Inter-connectivity network and structural variation has been shown to be implicated in neuroticism, more specifically the frontoparietal network, default mode network, salience networks, and limbic networks. These networks tackle executive, salience, and emotional information, respectively. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a brain region nested between and functionally related to various networks stated above that are implicated in neuroticism. As such, it was hypothesized …

Transforming Educators: Uncovering Factors In Secondary Education Premise Shift To Active Processing Structures Using A Transcendental Phenomenological Approach, Matthew J. Flugum

Education Doctorate Dissertations

The skills students will need to be successful in an unpredictable future differ from those needed to thrive today. Where the teachers of today were acculturated in systems of knowledge acquisition through systems of transmission, the future of learning requires active processing of new information. Students will need to meta-learn to upskill and reskill in an ever changing environment. Learning environments need to shift in order to support students to learn these skills requiring teachers to adjust traditional systems of structuring learning. This transcendental phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of secondary educators who have undergone a transformative shift in …

Border Decriminalization As A State Project: Lessons From Marijuana And Assisted Suicide Legalization Across The United States, Victor C. Romero Oct 2025

Border Decriminalization As A State Project: Lessons From Marijuana And Assisted Suicide Legalization Across The United States, Victor C. Romero

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

My prior work argued for the decriminalization of border crossings without proof of specific intent to violate another law (like drug trafficking), which is even less likely to happen now than it was when the piece was published, given the current presidential administration’s zealous deportation strategy and Congress’s seeming acquiescence. As such, I advocate for a second-best solution involving federal-state cooperative agreements wherein border states abutting both Mexico and Canada are given the option by the federal government to pass local legislation decriminalizing border crossings into their states as their communities desire. To the extent that the current presidential administration …

The Demonization Of America's Economic Engine, Ediberto Roman Oct 2025

The Demonization Of America's Economic Engine, Ediberto Roman

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

In a 2013 book entitled Those Damned Immigrants: America’s Hysteria Over Undocumented Immigration, I warned of a conservative political trend that I believed would lead to an all-out assault on undocumented immigrants. This trend occurred despite the fact that these immigrants are critical economic boons to our economy.

On his first day in office in 2025, President Trump made the book’s warnings prophetic. That day, President Trump issued a series of executive orders, including 10 focused on limiting entry into the United States and questioning many who previously entered the United States legally. These orders include, 1) enhanced deportation …

Countering The Criminalization Of Solidarity: An Analysis Of Legal Frameworks Proposed To Protect Humanitarian Aid For Migrants And Asylum Seekers, Katherine E. Smart Oct 2025

Countering The Criminalization Of Solidarity: An Analysis Of Legal Frameworks Proposed To Protect Humanitarian Aid For Migrants And Asylum Seekers, Katherine E. Smart

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Thousands of migrant fatalities are reported each year all across the globe, and as staggering as current numbers are, they are likely an undercount. These deaths are a direct result of government policies that funnel migrants into dangerous routes through deserts and seas to deter immigration. Further, when individuals and groups step forward to provide immediate aid to migrants—such as food, water, shelter, first aid, and search and rescue (SAR)—they are often targeted by intimidation, harassment, discipline, and even criminal prosecution. Thus emerges a question: what legal framework can protect the rights of humanitarian aid workers acting in solidarity with …

Spacecraft Reaction Wheel Simulation Testbed, Shiva Pulmamidi, Daniel Kim

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

There are three typical methods used to control the attitude (or orientation) of spacecraft in orbit. They are momentum exchange devices (reaction wheels and control moment gyroscopes), magnetic torquers, and thrusters (both cold and hot gas). The PolySim research group is currently developing a spacecraft attitude dynamics simulator utilizing reaction wheels. The simulator floats on a spherical air bearing and is balanced to accurately simulate the rotational motion of a spacecraft in orbit (not including the orbital motion). As a continuation of that project, we have completed the development of spacecraft attitude simulator using cold gas thrusters to control the …

Performance Dashboard Design For Radiologists: Highlighting What Matters & Fostering Improvement, Trevor Knotts, Jemma Simpson, Coleman Hawkins

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

TurboRad has developed a system with proven results that streamlines radiology report creation and improves radiologist productivity. A study performed in 2023 found that “the advanced macro-button toolbar system has great correlation for both lower report completion times and increased wRVU productivity. The benefits of the toolbar system are most evident in the simpler XR reports. Though they are simpler to read and complete reports, the greater quantity of XR reports contributes to a greater overall wRVU completion rate throughout the day as radiologists can spend more time on more complex examinations and reports” (Chow, Speece, & Holtzman, 2024). Since …

Contracting For Consumer Trade Compliance, Christine Abely Oct 2025

Contracting For Consumer Trade Compliance, Christine Abely

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Export compliance is becoming increasingly important for parties required to abide by U.S. law, including many online sellers of consumer products. These retailers’ contractual terms with their customers set forth a number of provisions governing the relationship between them, including those which deal with arbitration, indemnification, disclaimer of warranties, and other issues. Many such agreements also purport to create obligations on the part of the consumer as to export control and sanctions compliance relative to the products they purchase. These contract provisions attempt to do so, however, in often markedly different ways, and with language that may leave notable gaps …
