Money And Federalism, Dan Awrey Oct 2025

Money And Federalism, Dan Awrey

Duke Law Journal

The United States is the only country in the world in which both federal and state governments possess independent and yet overlapping authority for bank chartering, regulation, and supervision. The roots of this unique "dual" banking system can be traced back to the Constitution, written almost a century before banks rose to the apex of the financial system and became the dominant source of money. Beginning with the landmark Supreme Court decision in McCulloch v. Maryland, this system has been a wellspring of jurisdictional conflict. Yet over time, this highly fragmented and hotly contested system has also produced strong …

In this qualitative phenomenological study, the perceived barriers to services among Hispanic immigrant community members in Southern Connecticut were explored. The study was grounded in social disorganization theory and cultural conflict theory to identify the specific obstacles these communities face, understand the underlying causes, and examine the broader societal and criminal justice implications. Data were collected through open-ended anonymous questionnaires with participants from Hispanic immigrant communities. The findings revealed that fear of deportation, language barriers, and limited education about available services and resources were the most perceived barriers. These challenges were found to significantly affect the integration and well-being of …

The Dark Side Of Synchrony: Investigating Affective Valence As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Physiological Synchrony And Team Performance, Caroline N. Deal Oct 2025

The Dark Side Of Synchrony: Investigating Affective Valence As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Physiological Synchrony And Team Performance, Caroline N. Deal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Team processes are severely understudied, likely given their dynamic nature. Physiological synchrony (PS) may provide a solution, as PS provides a proximal, objective measure of team processes. PS is believed to develop through affect contagion, such that team members who catch each other’s emotions are more likely to physiologically synchronize. Extant research has found relationships between PS and performance; however, many questions remain regarding the nature, scope, and directionality of this relationship. I proposed that PS in the context of a positively valenced emotion would be beneficial to team performance, while PS characterized by a negatively valenced emotion would be …

Conjuring Elizabeth Fulhame: Using Ai To Depict The Invisible Woman From The Dawn Of Photography., Yvette Hamilton Oct 2025

Conjuring Elizabeth Fulhame: Using Ai To Depict The Invisible Woman From The Dawn Of Photography., Yvette Hamilton

Art Inquiries

Histories of the origins of photography are dominated by men, but the lesser-known contributions of women, such as the British chemist Elizabeth Fulhame, were fundamental to its success. Fulhame’s eighteenth-century chemical experiments directly contributed to the birth of photography, however, she is either totally obscured, or only briefly footnoted, in foundational texts on the history of photography. Her obscuration is heightened by the complete absence of any surviving images of her - she is, quite literally, invisible within a medium whose history privileges the visible.

This paper charts my practice-led research that used AI generative imaging to create speculative portraits …

Identifying B-Vitamin Requirements And Phycosphere Interactions For The Hab-Forming Dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium Bahamense Var. Bahamense, Lydia A. Ruggles Oct 2025

Identifying B-Vitamin Requirements And Phycosphere Interactions For The Hab-Forming Dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium Bahamense Var. Bahamense, Lydia A. Ruggles

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) negatively affect economies, ecosystems, and public health through mass proliferation and toxin production. The HAB species, Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense, is a saxitoxin-producing dinoflagellate found in tropical and subtropical estuarine waters globally. In two Florida estuaries, Old Tampa Bay and the Indian River Lagoon, P. bahamense is a recurrent HAB species, and the exact timing and intensity of bloom peaks in these estuaries vary interannually. Factors that are suspected to contribute to blooms include temperature, residence times, nutrients, and salinity. However, many HAB dinoflagellates require vitamin B12 for growth and bloom development. Thus, B12 may influence …

Resting-State Functional Connections With The Hippocampus And With The Caudate Nucleus Predict Working Memory Performance In Multiple Sclerosis, Christopher J. Cagna, Ekaterina Dobryakova, Kai Sucich, Tien T. Tong, Joshua Sandry Oct 2025

Resting-State Functional Connections With The Hippocampus And With The Caudate Nucleus Predict Working Memory Performance In Multiple Sclerosis, Christopher J. Cagna, Ekaterina Dobryakova, Kai Sucich, Tien T. Tong, Joshua Sandry

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Working memory (WM) dysfunction is common in multiple sclerosis (MS). WM deficits also contribute to episodic memory (EM) dysfunction, a prevalent and disabling cognitive symptom of the disease. Functional connectivity between the hippocampus and caudate nucleus supports EM, but its specific influences on WM in MS are unknown. Resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) can identify spontaneous, baseline connectivity patterns that predict cognitive impairment, thus offering clinical utility. The present study examined whether hippocampal and caudate RSFC could predict WM performance in people with MS. Across three independent studies (N = 78; 42 MS, 36 healthy individuals (HC)), seed-to-voxel RSFC between the …

Humans instinctively adopt methods to reduce their risk of encountering harmful pathogens, yet their adherence to preventive health practices can often be erratic. Condoms exemplify one vital preventive tool against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that, despite their effectiveness, are not consistently utilized. This pattern of behavior appears to persist even during periods of widespread disease transmission, with varied data from the COVID-19 pandemic indicating that condom usage remained inconsistent. The present study aimed to clarify these inconsistencies by examining changes in condom use cross-culturally. Heterosexual participants who were sexually active (N = 3,972 [1,327 men, 2,645 women], Mage= 22.82) across …

Personal Jurisdiction And The Declaration Of Independence, Ryan C. Williams Oct 2025

Personal Jurisdiction And The Declaration Of Independence, Ryan C. Williams

Duke Law Journal

The Declaration of Independence accuses King George III of having "obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers." But despite the seemingly natural resonance of this particular charge with the legal profession, legal scholars have given remarkably little attention to the controversy that provoked this particular complaint. This Article traces the colonists' complaint to a somewhat surprising and unexpected source—a dispute about personal jurisdiction.

During the late eighteenth century, administrative officials responsible for overseeing Britain's North American possessions sought to eliminate the use of the custom of foreign attachment by colonial court systems. …

Evaluation Of L- And S-Band Polarimetric Data For Monitoring Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Health In Preparation For Nisar, Michael Battaglia, Laura Bourgeau-Chavez Oct 2025

Evaluation Of L- And S-Band Polarimetric Data For Monitoring Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Health In Preparation For Nisar, Michael Battaglia, Laura Bourgeau-Chavez

Michigan Tech Publications

Highlights: What are the main findings? Inundation extent mapping demonstrated high accuracy (79–83%) at C-, S- and L-band areas with limitations related to stand structure and frequency, while du-al-frequency SAR was found to have high accuracy (~92%) for wetland type mapping. Misattribution of dominant double-bounce scatter (characteristic of wetlands) to single-bounce scatter occurs at certain vegetation moisture and SAR geometries for C-, S- and L-band areas. What are the implications of the main findings? Multi-frequency polarimetric SAR provides high-accuracy wetland mapping capabilities, regardless of cloud cover. The misattribution of double-bounce to single-bounce scattering results in errors in wetland extent mapping, …

Redefining Gender And Rural Life In The Pampas: Alessandra Sanguinetti’S The Adventures Of Guille And Belinda Series, Alejandra López-Oliveros Oct 2025

Redefining Gender And Rural Life In The Pampas: Alessandra Sanguinetti’S The Adventures Of Guille And Belinda Series, Alejandra López-Oliveros

Art Inquiries

At the time of Argentina’s independence, the gauchos (nomadic horsemen) had become the symbol of the nation in its purest form. Celebrated as independent, heroic and strong, and usually portrayed as the sole inhabitants of the Pampa, the idealized image of the gaucho has flooded popular culture and art even today, to the detriment of flesh-and-bone wage laborers of all genders. As opposed to this static image, I propose to examine Alessandra Sanguinetti’s photographic series, The Adventures of Guille and Belinda (ongoing since 1999), which focuses on girls and women in the countryside, pointedly highlights their previous absence. By contrasting …

A Formidable Female Network: The Role Of Women In William Henry Fox Talbot’S Establishment Of Early Photography, Rose Teanby Phd Oct 2025

A Formidable Female Network: The Role Of Women In William Henry Fox Talbot’S Establishment Of Early Photography, Rose Teanby Phd

Art Inquiries

This paper explores how women assisted William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) to establish his Photogenic Drawing and Calotype photographic processes in Great Britain and Europe. Utilising preserved contemporary correspondence as a primary source of unedited transcribed conversations, the genesis of photography can be revisited from an alternative viewpoint of extensive familial collaboration. Letters between Talbot and his female relatives exposed a sophisticated network of interconnected mid 19th century social elite, providing multiple opportunities for informal advocacy and timely dissemination of the new scientific art.

Epistolary exchanges from 1839 to 1858 provide new insights into women’s subtle, less visible influence …

An Early Female Daguerreotypist In Spain: Marie-Agnès-Anastasie Clemandot, Madame Fritz, Maria De Los Santos García Felguera, Gregorio Escalada Sardina

Art Inquiries

Research on women who have worked in the field of photography in Spain is recent and has developed mostly in the 21st century. Still in 2025, we don’t have a book that includes them all. Outside Spain, they are completely unknown.

Here we present, as a case of study, a French woman who doesn’t fit into the rules of her time: Marie-Agnèse-Anastasie Clemandot (Le Puy-en-Velay, Haute-Loire, 1807 – Paris, 1876). She was a bookseller in Zurich, a ribbon merchant in Paris, a travelling daguerreotypist in France, Spain and Portugal and seller of leather for surgical instruments. She also had a …

Psychological Research on Urban Society

Happiness is a state that is constantly strived for amidst the complexity of life. Previous research suggests that the student population is prone to psychological problems due to high workloads and a scarce resource of time that could affect happiness. Referring to previous studies, this study seeks to examine the relationship between feelings of awe and subjective well-being which is influenced by perceptions of time availability and perceived workload. Data were collected offline (N = 56) using VR devices to present awe-inducing videos, with responses measured via self-report. The results showed the absence of video effects on the condition …
