One Step Fabrication: Software-Automated Printed Circuits Via Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing, Gabriel Sanchez
One Step Fabrication: Software-Automated Printed Circuits Via Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing, Gabriel Sanchez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As of now, the creation of 3D printed components faces many issues regarding stability, repeatability, and manual labor. Existing methods lack an integrated software framework that automates circuit generation while ensuring predictable behavior in printed geometries. In this work, circuits are modeled by leveraging distributed equations that reduce to lumped approximations when the printed geometry remains uniform. The system is implemented through a parametric, domain-specific programming workflow and evaluated across 100 Hz to 100 kHz to assess the accuracy of the predicted electrical values. Printed results were validated by empirical studies involving an RLC meter and by comparing both theoretical …
Development And Optimization Of A Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy System, Samuel Ruiz
Development And Optimization Of A Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy System, Samuel Ruiz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) remains one of the most widely used techniques for identifying electrically active defects that affect leakage current, carrier lifetime, and overall reliability in semiconductor devices. Legacy boxcar or capacitance meter implementations, however, often struggle with limited signal-to-noise ratio, labor-intensive data collection, and poor adaptability across diverse material systems. This thesis presents the design and optimization of a semi-automated, lock-in-amplifier-based DLTS platform. By pairing a Zurich HF2LI with PID-controlled cryogenic sweeps, precision signal generation, and MATLAB driven acquisition and processing scripts, the system will (i) enhance SNR through phase-sensitive detection, programmable low pass filtering, and parasitics calibration; …
What Limits Dryland Ecosystems? Patterns Of Soil Fertility And Resource Limitation In The Chihuahuan Desert, Dylan Stover
What Limits Dryland Ecosystems? Patterns Of Soil Fertility And Resource Limitation In The Chihuahuan Desert, Dylan Stover
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Human activities are substantially altering global resource cycles with widespread implications for biogeochemistry and ecosystem functioning globally. Drylands, regions where precipitation is outweighed by water losses, are especially sensitive to these large shifts in resource cycles due to their inherently low and variable resource availability. In these regions, resource availability and biological activity are often concentrated around plants – or fertile islands – and predominantly driven by pulses of water. However, our knowledge of the processes influencing biological productivity in drylands – patterns of soil fertility and resource limitation – remains lacking, and their unique biogeochemical and biological processes create …
A Unified Framework For Embedding-Based Synthetic Data Generation With High Cardinality Categorical Features, Cesar Iram Vazquez
A Unified Framework For Embedding-Based Synthetic Data Generation With High Cardinality Categorical Features, Cesar Iram Vazquez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
High-cardinality categorical variables remain difficult to model in tabular data, where classical encoders encounter sparsity, susceptibility to leakage, and the loss of meaningful relational structure. This dissertation develops a unified framework for learning, evaluating, and synthesizing representations of such variables using both traditional encoders and modern embedding methods, including Word2Vec, FastText, Node2Vec, TF–IDF/SVD, and supervised entity embeddings. The framework is applied across three benchmark datasets (Adult, PetFinder, Breast Cancer) and a hierarchical educational case study (IPEDS/CIP). Embedding quality is examined through both downstream predictive performance and structure-focused diagnostics that quantify neighborhood behavior and geometric coherence. To assess whether synthetic data …
Hubert-Based Models And Evaluation Strategies For Pragmatically-Faithful Speech To Speech Translation, Javier Vazquez
Hubert-Based Models And Evaluation Strategies For Pragmatically-Faithful Speech To Speech Translation, Javier Vazquez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Pragmatic fidelity in speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) has largely been understudied, leading to communication tools inadequate to support non-superficial dialog. We aim to improve pragmatic faithfulness in English-Spanish translation through the development of machine learning models that are able to predict a corresponding pragmatic representation in the other language. To evaluate performance, we developed a pipeline that utilizes a recently-developed pragmatic similarity evaluation metric to compare models. Further, we developed models that exploit HuBERT features as these have been found suitable for various prosody and pragmatics related tasks. Our models outperformed human and state-of-the-art predictions, albeit the methodology being limited to …

Voices At The Intersection: A Listening Guide Analysis Of Campus-Based Advocates Navigating Institutional Policies On Sexual Violence, Arely Zaragoza-Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Campus-based advocates occupy a critical yet complex position within higher education institutions (Nightingale, 2023; Wood et al., 2021), serving as frontline support for students while simultaneously navigating the mandates, policies, and bureaucratic structures that define their roles. This research study explores the lived experiences of advocates working in university settings, focusing on how institutional mandates from compliance requirements to administrative expectations shape, constrain, and sometimes empower their daily practices. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, the study centers the voices of campus-based advocates in Texas to illuminate the tensions between their professional commitments to student-centered care and the institutional imperatives of …
Physics-Guided Strategies For Enhancing Neural Networks Trained With Limited Data, Jose Guadalupe Perez Zamora
Physics-Guided Strategies For Enhancing Neural Networks Trained With Limited Data, Jose Guadalupe Perez Zamora
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Deep neural networks excel at a wide range of processing tasks across various disciplines. However, the quantity and quality of data significantly impact network performance. In specialized domains, high-quality datasets are often difficult to gather, interpret, and curate for effective learning. Few-shot learning techniques, including transfer learning, data augmentation, and meta-learning, have emerged to address these constraints.
We propose three physics-guided strategies for enhancing neural networks trained with limited data: (1) combining existing models like LSTMs with Physics-Informed Neural Networks through two-branch architectures that merge their outputs, (2) deriving custom physics-informed data augmentation algorithms to expand limited datasets, and (3) …

Understanding the effects of reduced frame rates on the reliability of Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) ratings for swallowing safety and efficiency is essential for clinical practice. While previous research has examined frame rate (simulated pulse rates) implications concerning penetration, aspiration, and residue ratings, the impact on summary grading systems like the Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) remains unclear. This study analyzed a total of 315 full MBS videos collected from 278 patients, and 76.25% of patients were diagnosed with head and neck cancer (mean age 62.51 years, SD 8.53; 12.23% female). We performed pairwise comparisons of DIGEST grades …

Background: Sensitivity and specificity are foundational metrics for cancer detection tools. However, most machine learning algorithms prioritize overall accuracy during optimization, which fails to align with clinical priorities of early detection. We aim to develop a feature selection machine learning algorithm while maximizing sensitivity at a given specificity.
Methods: We developed SMAGS-LASSO, a machine learning algorithm that combines our developed Sensitivity Maximization at a Given Specificity (SMAGS) framework with L1 regularization for feature selection. This approach simultaneously optimizes sensitivity at user-defined specificity thresholds while performing feature selection. SMAGS-LASSO utilizes a custom loss function with L1 regularization and multiple parallel optimization …

Soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) are characterized by abundant extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, yet the functional contribution of specific ECM components remains poorly understood. In this study, we identify periostin (POSTN), a matricellular protein, as a regulator of sarcoma progression and the tumor immune microenvironment. Analysis of human sarcoma datasets revealed that high POSTN expression correlates with poor prognosis and elevated expression of ECM-related and myeloid cell–associated genes. In murine genetic models of sarcoma, tumors expressing high levels of Postn displayed enhanced expression of ECM genes and monocyte-recruiting cytokines. Functional silencing of Postnin vivo reduced tumor growth without altering tumor cell …

Background: Ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy (typically defined >40 Gy/s) has shown promise for enhanced normal tissue sparing while maintaining tumor control, termed the FLASH effect when this biological response is observed. However, precise dose rate control remains a technical challenge in proton therapy systems, particularly for research applications investigating dose rate effects.
Purpose: To develop and validate a passive beam modulation technique using tungsten scatterers for controllable dose rate adjustment in a synchrotron-based proton therapy beamline without modifying accelerator parameters.
Methods: We investigated dose rate modulation using tungsten foils of varying thicknesses (0.1-3.5 mm) positioned upstream in an 87.2 MeV …

Normalization Of Temperature Effects For Quality Assurance Of Quantitative Prostate Apparent Diffusion Coefficient Imaging Across Multiple Sites, Ken-Pin Hwang, Joshua Yung, R Jason Stafford, Caroline Chung, Aradhana M Venkatesan
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) as measured by diffusion weighted imaging is known to negatively correlate with prostate tumor aggressiveness. Heterogeneity in system and protocol performance causes potential variability in ADC acquired across a large scanner network, prompting a need to evaluate quantitative ADC from a prostate-specific MR diffusion protocol as part of quality assurance (QA). Due to the temperature dependence of ADC, repeatability and reproducibility assessments typically require phantoms to maintain a temperature of 0°C, imposing a considerable burden when assessing large numbers of scanners.
Purpose: To develop a QA procedure at room temperature for assessing the reproducibility of …

The F. nucleatum group (sensu lato) is historically composed of four subspecies (F. nucleatum subsp. animalis, F. nucleatum subsp. nucleatum, F. nucleatum subsp. polymorphum, F. nucleatum subsp. vincentii). Although F. nucleatum sensu lato members are typically associated with oral disease, they have recently been shown to disseminate to the gastrointestinal tract and are associated with adverse health conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer (CRC). A growing debate over the nomenclature applied to Fusobacterium taxonomy has resulted in different names for these lineages, shifting them from their historic subspecies designations to …

This forum contribution considers the complexities and importance of gender in the historiography of LGBTQ+ college students. After a brief introduction, we focus on four key areas in the existing historiography: women's romantic relationships in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, higher education leaders' enforcement of gender norms and purges of LGBTQ+ students through the mid-twentieth century, the gender dynamics within LGBTQ+ student organizations from the 1970s onward, and trans and other LGBTQ+ students' expansion of gender possibilities, including through the use of drag. In so doing, we argue that gender analysis is important to the historiography of LGBTQ+ …

Despite growing interest in task-based language teaching (TBLT), limited empirical work has examined how different rhetorical task types influence second language (L2) writing development, especially in relation to affective variables, such as writing anxiety. Existing research in TBLT has largely focused on cognitive dimensions, often neglecting individual differences in learners' emotional responses. Moreover, Long's (2014) call to use first language (L1) data as a benchmark in TBLT remains underexplored, complicating the interpretation of L2 performance patterns. To address these gaps, we examined the impact of task type and writing anxiety on the written performance of 140 university students (70 L1 …

Purpose: Real-time risk monitoring is critical but challenging in intensive care units (ICUs) due to the lack of real-time updates for most clinical variables. Although real-time predictions have been integrated into various risk-scoring systems to aid monitoring, existing systems do not address uncertainties in risk assessments. We developed an enhanced risk monitoring framework based on commonly used systems like the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score by incorporating uncertainties to improve the effectiveness of real-time risk monitoring in ICUs.Methods: This study included 5,351 patients admitted to the Cardiothoracic ICU in the National University Hospital in Singapore. We developed machine learning …

Background: The most used instruments for small-field dosimetry have notable limitations, including the need for correction of output factors, limited scanning speeds, and challenges in alignment for percentage depth dose (PDD) measurements, particularly for extremely small fields. However, plastic scintillation detectors (PSDs) are an attractive alternative for small-field dosimetry due to their correction-free nature, linear dose response, and fast response time.
Purpose: This study evaluates the robustness and accuracy of the dosimetric measurements using a new water-equivalent PSD in small-field dosimetry. The study also aims to report accurate measurements of output factors, profiles, and an indirect method for measuring PDD …

Background: Functional tremor (FT) is considered the most common phenomenology among patients with functional movement disorders (FMDs). Most patients have limb tremor, but they can also present with tremor involving the head and trunk.
Objectives and methods: We aimed to assess the clinical phenomenology of functional head tremor (FHT) and contrast it with features of HT observed in 125 patients with other tremor etiologies (OTE), including 71 patients with essential tremor (ET).
Results: There were 101 consecutive patients (68.3% females) with FT from which n = 36 (35.6%) had FHT. Yes-yes tremor was the most common directionality (47.2%). Functional trunk …

Introduction: Dysphagia is common among individuals with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) is a treatment used to increase expiratory muscle force production for airway protection deficits. To our knowledge, no studies have tested EMST in this population. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of EMST in individuals with PSP.
Methods: Twenty-nine participants completed baseline measures of maximum expiratory pressure and underwent a trial session of EMST. EMST was considered feasible if participants were able to complete at least 10 repetitions at 30% of their maximum expiratory pressure. Qualitative analyses were also completed …

Background: Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is an integral part of acute brain injury management. While invasive ICP monitoring is the gold standard, there are several medical conditions that preclude its placement. The aim of the present study is to validate a multimodal approach for increasing ICP detection.
Material and methods: In this retrospective study, patients with acute brain injury who had an external ventricular drain (EVD) placement were included. We measured bilateral optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and assessed for optic nerve disk elevation (ONDE) by using ocular ultrasound, bilateral middle cerebral artery pulsatility index (PI) by using transcranial Doppler, …

Age-related neurodegenerative diseases involve reduced cell numbers and impaired behavioral capacity. Neurodegeneration and behavioral deficits also occur during aging, and notably in the absence of disease. The cerebellum, which modulates movement and cognition, is susceptible to cell loss in both aging and disease. Here, we demonstrate that cerebellar Purkinje cell loss in aged mice is not spatially random but rather occurs in a pattern of parasagittal stripes. We also find that aged mice exhibit impaired motor coordination and more severe tremor compared to younger mice. However, the relationship between patterned Purkinje cell loss and motor dysfunction is not straightforward. Examination …
