Effect Of Graphene Oxide On The Upconversion Photoluminescence Behavior Of Er/Yb Co-Doped Pvdf-Go Composite Nanofibers, Saptasree Bose, Jack Ryan Summers, Bhupendra B. Srivastava, Karen Lozano, Victoria Padilla-Gainza Jan 2026

Effect Of Graphene Oxide On The Upconversion Photoluminescence Behavior Of Er/Yb Co-Doped Pvdf-Go Composite Nanofibers, Saptasree Bose, Jack Ryan Summers, Bhupendra B. Srivastava, Karen Lozano, Victoria Padilla-Gainza

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Upconversion photoluminescence (UCPL) materials, particularly rare-earth (RE) doped nanoparticles, have garnered significant attention due to their ability to convert near-infrared (NIR) excitation into visible emission, offering benefits such as high photostability, long lifetimes, low autofluorescence, and deep tissue penetration. Among various platforms, polymer-based one-dimensional (1D) nanofibers with in-situ lanthanide doping remain relatively unexplored, despite their superior mechanical flexibility, processability, and potential for improved luminescence performance. In this study, we report the fabrication and UCPL quenching behavior of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) nanofibers incorporated with graphene oxide (GO), synthesized for the first time using the scalable Forcespinning® technique. PVDF, a …

Misinformation And The Law, Gustavo Ribeiro Jan 2026

Misinformation And The Law, Gustavo Ribeiro

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This Article bridges critical gaps between the growing body of social science research on misinformation and the persistent challenges jurors face in evaluating potentially unreliable evidence in courtrooms. Misinformation—a pervasive issue undermining decision-making in democratic societies—mirrors the difficulties jurors encounter in distinguishing truth from falsehood amid compelling but unreliable evidence. The consequences of such challenges are dire: wrongful convictions, racial disparities, and the erosion of public trust in the legal system.

This Article is the first piece of legal scholarship to provide a comprehensive discussion of current research on the psychological mechanisms underlying susceptibility to misinformation—such as the illusory truth …

The New Neccesity, Ezra Rosser

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

According to the U.S. Supreme Court, cities are free to criminalize homelessness. The 2024 case City of Grants Pass v. Johnson is the most important homelessness case in decades and was a significant blow to advocates for the unhoused. The conservative majority rejected the idea that city ordinances criminalizing sleeping in public amounted to cruel and unusual punishment insofar as they penalized status. There is no sidestepping the loss. But within the faint glow of the embers of the oral argument and of the decision itself, there is the possibility that a new understanding of necessity, supported by the same …

Application Of Organic Geochemistry To The Characterization Of Hydrochar And Biochar: Insights Into Composition And Optimization, Michael A. Kruge, Teresa A. Centeno, Alvaro Amado-Fierro, José Manuel González-Lafuente, Rubén Forján, José Luis Gallego

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Hydrothermal carbonization has garnered significant attention in recent studies due to potential applications of the hydrochar produced, which overlap with those of torrefied biochar, including soil improvement, carbon sequestration, and energy production. However, unlike the relatively uniform properties of biochar, hydrochar characteristics can vary greatly depending on the feedstock used. Advanced characterization techniques are essential to better understand these materials and enhance their practical applications. Research on hydrochar requires a multi-faceted approach, including molecular-level studies, to optimize production processes and identify specific applications.

In this regard, analytical methods commonly used in organic geochemistry could play a crucial role in deepening …

Examining The Current And Potential Impacts Of Erosion, Flooding, And Permafrost Thaw On Small Businesses In The Lower Kuskokwim Basin, Alaska, Dela Yao Agbagba Jan 2026

Examining The Current And Potential Impacts Of Erosion, Flooding, And Permafrost Thaw On Small Businesses In The Lower Kuskokwim Basin, Alaska, Dela Yao Agbagba

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Climate change has intensified hazards such as flooding, erosion, and permafrost thaw in Arctic Communities, threatening small business buildings, disrupting operations, and reducing income. Small businesses are important to these communities because they provide essential goods and services and support local economic activity. Understanding their vulnerability and adaptation needs is therefore important for sustaining communities in the Lower Kuskokwim Basin, Alaska.

This study used GIS spatial analysis and content analysis as its two main methods, supported by a limited number of semi-structured interviews. A spatial database of 78 businesses across seven Alaska Native Communities was developed, and flood susceptibility was …

The Influence Of Scale In Modeling Social Vulnerability And Disaster Assistance, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Oronde Drakes, Eric Tate, Samuel Brody, Wesley Highfield, Kayode Atoba Jan 2026

The Influence Of Scale In Modeling Social Vulnerability And Disaster Assistance, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Oronde Drakes, Eric Tate, Samuel Brody, Wesley Highfield, Kayode Atoba

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Understanding how social vulnerability relates to disaster impacts is critical for addressing social equity, yet the role of spatial scale in this relationship is often overlooked. Most studies use aggregated data, risking ecological fallacy-misinterpreting individual outcomes from group-level data. This study examines how spatial scale influences the relationship between social vulnerability and federal disaster assistance after Hurricane Harvey. Using spatial econometric models at both household and census tract levels, we assessed the strength of key vulnerability indicators in explaining disaster assistance. Results show that disability, housing tenure, household size, and income predict assistance at the household level, but their influence …

Beyond Discrete Indicators: Modeling Intersectional Flood Vulnerability, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Eric Tate, Christopher T. Emrich, Md Asif Rahman, Kaeleb Royster

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Social vulnerability to flooding is shaped by intersectional social marginalization, yet most quantitative assessments employ indicators of single populations. This study applies spatial machine learning to examine how the intersectional social vulnerability indicators of poverty-race, poverty-housing tenure, and race-housing tenure compare with traditional discrete indicators of single populations in predicting flood exposure in California. Using geographically weighted random forests and partial dependence plots, we model spatial heterogeneity and non-linear relationships between social vulnerability and exposure. We quantified flood exposure using a population-adjusted measure derived from building footprints and modeled 500-year fluvial and pluvial flood hazard. The results reveal distinct explanatory …

Hybrid Threats And Deterrence Effectiveness In Europe, Chick Edmond Jan 2026

Hybrid Threats And Deterrence Effectiveness In Europe, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Objectives:
The current European security landscape is characterized by the growing intersection of historical security challenges (i.e., "traditional" security issues) and new forms of hybrid threats. These changes call for a significant re-evaluation of the role of deterrence in today's world. Traditional deterrence approaches have focused on the use of military capability as well as credible retaliatory threats. However, the recent development of hybrid warfare, including cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, economic coercion, and clandestine sabotage has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish between times of war and times of peace. This research argues that existing frameworks for deterring adversaries will increasingly …

Nuclear Deterrence And The Security Dilemma In A Complex Multipolar World, Chick Edmond Jan 2026

Nuclear Deterrence And The Security Dilemma In A Complex Multipolar World, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Objectives: The purpose of this research project is to examine how nuclear deterrence intersects with the concept of security dilemma, i.e., when a state takes an action intended to increase its own security it may inadvertently create a risk or threat to another state and contribute to increased levels of tension. Fourth, how nuclear and conventional systems are becoming increasingly interconnected, which will serve to potentially amplify risks associated with these systems.

Methods: Utilizing a qualitative analytical approach of documents such as national strategy documents, defense policy statements and historical records of crises dating from 1945-2025, the study identifies four …

Autonomous Weapons And Strategic Stability, Chick Edmond Jan 2026

Autonomous Weapons And Strategic Stability, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

The increasing number of artificial intelligence (AI) elements within military systems has introduced new forms of security dilemmas related to speed, level of secrecy, and transfer of responsibility from humans to machines. This article addresses the question of whether or how AI enabled autonomous weapons can lead to greater levels of strategic instability. Three causal mechanisms were determined by this study to potentially create destabilizing effects due to the introduction of autonomy; the first mechanism is a reduction in time available for decision making. The second mechanism involves the creation of multiple pathways of escalation. The third mechanism is the …

Global Evidence On Scaling Nature-Based Solutions For Compound Hazards, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Anahita Azadgar Jan 2026

Global Evidence On Scaling Nature-Based Solutions For Compound Hazards, Sina Razzaghi Asl, Anahita Azadgar

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are increasingly promoted for climate adaptation to compound hazards, but systematic evidence of their effectiveness is still scarce. We address this gap with a systematic review of 38 studies. Each study was sorted by what its measurement design can support, not by what its authors claim. This produced four groups. Direct studies attribute a measured hazard reduction to the intervention, proxy studies infer protection from ecosystem condition, prioritization studies map suitable locations without estimating performance, and qualitative studies describe effectiveness without measuring it. We detect trends in geographic distribution, hazard combinations, intervention types, methodological approaches, and strength …

The Contested Kinmen Model, Ian Murphy Jan 2026

The Contested Kinmen Model, Ian Murphy

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

[Introduction] Kinmen County, Taiwan, stands as an anomaly in East Asia- it is an archipelago administered by Taipei but visually and geographically tethered to the coastline of the People's Republic of China (PRC). For over seven decades, these islands have served as the physical frontline of the unfinished Chinese Civil War, functioning first as a kinetic battleground and later as a laboratory for cross-strait engagement. Yet, to view Kinmen as a relic of the Cold War is to miss it's contemporary strategic significance. The region has now become the primary theater for the PRC's "Kinmen Model" (Jinmen Moshi, symbols redacted), …

Analysis Of Environmental Site Assessments Of Brownfield Redevelopment In Waterloo, Iowa, Sage Cappi Jan 2026

Analysis Of Environmental Site Assessments Of Brownfield Redevelopment In Waterloo, Iowa, Sage Cappi

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis examines how Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) are interpreted and utilized in the context of Brownfield redevelopment, with particular attention to the relationship between historical context, contamination, health risk, and future redevelopment possibilities. While ESAs are widely used to inform redevelopment decisions, there remains a gap in understanding how reported environmental data translates into meaningful assessments. To address this, this study analyzes historical and environmental data from six Brownfield sites, identifying documented contaminants, their associated carcinogenic group, and redevelopment potential. Central to this research is the development of a relational framework designed to function as a more approachable interpretive …

Intensive Longitudinal Methods: Toward A Psychological Science Of Daily Life, Jean-Philippe Laurenceau, Ana M. Digiovanni, Niall Bolger

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Intensive longitudinal methods (ILMs) represent a class of longitudinal designs used to understand the flow of people's thoughts, feelings, physiology, and behaviors in their natural settings. This term encompasses daily diaries, experience sampling, ecological momentary assessment, ambulatory assessment, and related methods. Research on ILMs has grown exponentially, evolving into a core approach that complements more traditional designs. This article builds on this journal's first review on this topic, published in 2003. In the quarter-century since, there have been marked advances in design, technology, and statistical modeling. Three core ideas permeate this review: To build adequate theories of psychological functioning in …

Centering Community Concerns And Recommendations Amid Rapid Policy Changes: Impacts On Social Protection, Well-Being, And Health Access, Kriti Vashisht

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Rapidly evolving policies on gender identity and expression have highlighted a wide range of public and political perspectives on whether to limit or support demands for gender identification and healthcare services for the LGBTQ+ community. Due to the rise in these pro and against narratives and incidents, there were increased protection risks for this group. Scholars and practitioners working closely with LGBTQ+ members are witnessing increased distress and concerns among them, creating further barriers to care and heightened stigma. This is why community-based scholars and educators initiated an open consultation to create a non-partisan space for dialogue, reflection, and learning …

Civil Procedure: The Complexities Of Consent To Personal Jurisdiction, Scott Dodson Jan 2026

Civil Procedure: The Complexities Of Consent To Personal Jurisdiction, Scott Dodson

The Judges' Book

In Mallory v. Norfolk Southern Railway Co., the Supreme Court decided a personal-jurisdiction case outside the minimum contacts framework for the first time since 1990. Five justices deemed consent to be a method of establishing personal jurisdiction without regard to International Shoe. And, relying on pre-Shoe precedent, the Court held the defendant to have consented to general personal jurisdiction in Pennsylvania by complying with that state’s unique business-registration statute, which permitted its courts to “exercise general personal jurisdiction” over a registered corporation.

Mallory could be read as treating consent to personal jurisdiction as a simple, monolithic concept. …

Civil Procedure: Personal Jurisdiction And Federalism, Scott Dodson Jan 2026

Civil Procedure: Personal Jurisdiction And Federalism, Scott Dodson

The Judges' Book

The historical development of personal jurisdiction has featured an important interstate-federalism aim: to keep harmony among sovereign states. By purporting to use state borders to partition case allocation among states, personal jurisdiction follows the mantra that good fences make good neighbors.

This structural component fits uncomfortably with the idea of personal jurisdiction as an agent of the individual right protected by the Constitution’s Due Process Clause. Due process, after all, concerns a state’s relationship to a defendant, not the state’s relationship to another state.

In this chapter, I argue that whatever interstate-federalism value personal jurisdiction might, in theory, protect, the …

Civil Procedure: Personal Jurisdiction And The Fifth Amendment, Scott Dodson Jan 2026

Civil Procedure: Personal Jurisdiction And The Fifth Amendment, Scott Dodson

The Judges' Book

Since Pennoyer v. Neff, the Fourteenth Amendment’s Due Process Clause has constrained the exercise of personal jurisdiction by state courts. The Fourteenth Amendment permits state courts to exercise personal jurisdiction in four circumstances: (1) consent, (2) in-state service on an individual, (3) residency or citizenship in the state, and (4) minimum contacts with the state such that personal jurisdiction would not offend traditional notions of fair play and substantial justice. Confining state-court personal jurisdiction to connections between the litigant and the forum state serves not only litigant interests of fairness and reasonableness but also federal interests of interstate harmony.

Employment Law: Governance And Guardrails: Artificial Intelligence And Low-Wage Workers, Seema N. Patel

The Judges' Book

“It’s like magic.” In August 2014, the New York Times reported on how Kronos scheduling software—which uses which uses real-time inputs, including weather forecasts, historical sales data, and nearby events, to predict customer traffic—had created a “chronic crisis over the clock” for Starbucks’s 130,000 baristas. For one barista, Jannette Navarro, the Kronos app controlled everything from how much sleep her four-year-old son might get to what groceries she could afford that month. The software was installed directly onto workers’ personal phones without consultation, negotiation, or notice. What seemed “like magic” to a Kronos executive wreaked havoc on workers’ lives.

Lifting The Political Fog: People, Power, And Antislavery Politics In Upstate New York, 1848-1861, Nicholas Thony Jan 2026

Lifting The Political Fog: People, Power, And Antislavery Politics In Upstate New York, 1848-1861, Nicholas Thony

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

This work details the ascendance of the political antislavery movement in upstate New York, focusing on the roles a diverse array of actors played in constructing an unlikely Republican coalition of conservatives, reformers, black New Yorkers, nativists, prohibitionists, and abolitionists in the years preceding the Civil War. In weaving together the parallel and inextricable stories of powerful newspaperman Thurlow Weed, female reformers like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and black communities across the state, I argue the success of the political antislavery movement resulted from their combined efforts. Thurlow Weed was one of the most important politicians of …

Science Sojourners: The (Un)Making Of Women Scientists From China To America, Jane Jia-Yin Wang Jan 2026

Science Sojourners: The (Un)Making Of Women Scientists From China To America, Jane Jia-Yin Wang

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Science is often imagined as a borderless profession in which knowledge, careers, and talent circulate freely across national boundaries. Yet scientific careers remain embedded within institutions that correspond to immigration regimes, geopolitical tensions, and unequal social structures. Drawing on 32 in-depth interviews with early-career Chinese women scientists trained in the U.S., this dissertation examines how globally mobile scientists navigate decisions about careers, migration, and everyday life between China and the U.S.

Rather than treating migration as a series of discrete decisions driven by labor markets or state policies, this dissertation argues that career and life orientations are fundamentally intertwined through …

NaGaS2 and NaGaSe2 are two recently discovered compounds that crystallize in the same structure type. In this work, NaGa(S1−xSex)2 (x = 0.5, 0.75 and 1) are prepared using an alternative synthesis route, mechanochemistry followed by heat treatment. Na2S, Na2Se, Ga2S3 and Ga2Se3 are milled in stoichiometric proportions. Differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (23Na and 71Ga) show that the compounds after milling are composed of crystalline NaGa(S1−xSex)2 with an amorphous part. …

Designed Lands©Apes—Ar©Hitecture, Sculpture, Visual Art, Shape, Pi©Torial Work, Or . . . Nothing At All?, Richard H. Chused

Articles & Chapters

This article arises from the saga of the construction and eventual destruction of a landmark landscape architectural work by the well-known artist Mary Miss that was constructed adjacent to the Des Moines Art Center called Greenwood Pond: Double Site. The project’s demise is emblematic of the remarkably ambiguous copyright problems that surround such artistic creations. They do not neatly fit into any category of copyrightable works. Though they may contain sculptural works, their overall designs are rarely totally sculptural. While architects typically draw plans and “sculpt” a landscaped space, the results usually are not “buildings,’ as required by the definition …
