Increasing Eddy Activity In An Antarctic Circumpolar Current Hotspot: Three Decades Of Change At The Southeast Indian Ridge, Sophia V. Yates Jan 2026

Increasing Eddy Activity In An Antarctic Circumpolar Current Hotspot: Three Decades Of Change At The Southeast Indian Ridge, Sophia V. Yates

Open Access Master's Theses

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is the strongest ocean current. As the only current that flows completely around the globe without continental interruption, the ACC forms a barrier separating the subantarctic and Southern Ocean waters. Along its path, the ACC must negotiate several ocean ridge complexes where it becomes unstable and eddy activity increases dramatically. These resulting ocean ‘hotspots’ are sites of elevated cross-frontal fluxes of heat, carbon, nutrients, and freshwater. One hotspot is the Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR), where the ACC fronts are steered together to navigate narrow fracture zones in the ridge crest.

Amino Acid Isotope Dynamics And Associated Ecological Metrics Across Accretionary Tissues Of Marine Fishes, Sofia Piccone Jan 2026

Amino Acid Isotope Dynamics And Associated Ecological Metrics Across Accretionary Tissues Of Marine Fishes, Sofia Piccone

Open Access Master's Theses

Compound-specific isotope analysis of amino acids (CSIA-AA) applied to the organic growth layers of accretionary fish tissues, including eye lenses, otoliths, and scales, has made it possible to reconstruct histories of fish physiology, ecology, and environmental conditions. Yet it remains uncertain whether amino acid isotope values, and the ecological information they contain, are conserved across these archival tissues or if differences in tissue composition, growth, protein structure, and metabolic routing produce tissue-specific offsets that alter inferred carbon sources, d15NBaseline, and trophic position. We tested this question with individually paired CSIA-AA of eye lenses, otoliths, and scales …

Universal Child Care: An Essential Investment In Equity And Prosperity, Craig Dearfield Phd, Albert Nn Okwei, Vivian Frazier, Research Institute For Social Equity Rise Jan 2026

Universal Child Care: An Essential Investment In Equity And Prosperity, Craig Dearfield Phd, Albert Nn Okwei, Vivian Frazier, Research Institute For Social Equity Rise

Research Institute for Social Equity

Child care can serve as an important developmental support for children, but is often a significant cost for families. Parents make decisions about child care that affect their financial and life circumstances, and the impact of providing care for their children is potentially substantial. Providing publicly funded universal child care could improve child development outcomes at the population level while reducing financial and caregiving burdens on families.

Seeing The Whole Child: Bridging Community Beliefs And Early Intervention, Grace Danladi Saleh Jan 2026

Seeing The Whole Child: Bridging Community Beliefs And Early Intervention, Grace Danladi Saleh

Graduate Research Posters

Background

The first five years of a child’s life are a very important time. What happens during these early years has a big effect on how the child grows, learns to communicate, and relates to others. When caregivers respond warmly and consistently, children tend to do better later on. However, most screening tools used to spot developmental concerns are based mainly on Western ideas of what is normal. These tools often don’t match what many families from different backgrounds believe about child growth, behavior, or communication. As a result, children from diverse communities can be missed or identified too late. …

Green As Cure: The City Beautiful Movement And The Spatial Politics Of Health, 1870-1950, Avi Patel Jan 2026

Green As Cure: The City Beautiful Movement And The Spatial Politics Of Health, 1870-1950, Avi Patel

Library Map Prize

At the turn of the twentieth century, Progressive Era reformers understood the American city not merely as disordered but as pathological—an environment that bred disease and eroded civic life. This thesis argues that the City Beautiful Movement (CBM), embodied in Washington's 1902 McMillan Plan, advanced a spatial logic it terms "green as cure:" the conviction that disciplined landscape design could function as a form of environmental medicine, restoring health to the urban body. Drawing on maps, planning documents, and congressional reports, the thesis shows how plans defined disorder, prescribed intervention, and embedded assumptions about race and belonging into the built …

Small Antiperfect Steiner Triple Systems, Justin Z. Schroeder, Joshua Ganschow Jan 2026

Small Antiperfect Steiner Triple Systems, Justin Z. Schroeder, Joshua Ganschow

Research & Publications

The cycle structure of Steiner triple systems (STS) has been well studied with regard to uniform STS and cycle switching. Of particular interest among uniform STS are perfect STS, in which every cycle graph consists of a single cycle. In this paper, we initiate the study of antiperfect STS, in which every cycle graph consists of a union of at least two cycles. We prove that an antiperfect STS(n) exists for all admissible n ≥ 15 and provide a complete listing of all antiperfect STS(n) for n ≤ 19 and all antiperfect STS(21) with a non-trivial automorphism. Furthermore, it is …

Searches And Seizures Of The Unhoused, Shawn E. Fields Jan 2026

Searches And Seizures Of The Unhoused, Shawn E. Fields

Faculty Scholarship

The United States recorded its largest ever unhoused population in 2024. Acute affordable housing shortages and climate-fueled natural disasters have exacerbated a decades-long unaddressed humanitarian crisis, straining resources in cities and rural areas alike. In response, state and local governments have pivoted to a more punitive approach to houselessness. Draconian "anti-camping" ordinances subject houseless people to fines or arrests while police destroy their property in encampment "sweeps," disconnecting the unhoused from critical social structures. Quality-of-life laws criminalize basic biological functions in public. New York, California, and other states have expanded the reach of involuntary civil commitment procedures, forcibly hospitalizing and …

Esg Risk And Agricultural Commodity Integration, Alper Gormus, Yoav Wachsman, Elif Gormus Jan 2026

Esg Risk And Agricultural Commodity Integration, Alper Gormus, Yoav Wachsman, Elif Gormus

Finance and Economics

This study investigates how major agricultural commodities interact with diversified U.S. equity funds, sorted by their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risk exposure. Using daily Morningstar data on 880 U.S. equity mutual funds, we construct portfolios representing high- and low-ESG-risk equities and examine their linkages with prices for eight agricultural commodities. Applying Fourier-augmented Toda–Yamamoto VAR and LM-GARCH models that accommodate both abrupt and gradual structural breaks, we document clear heterogeneity across ESG risk segments. Low-ESG-risk portfolios exhibit minimal price and volatility spillovers from agricultural commodities, whereas high-ESG-risk portfolios display strong and often bidirectional transmissions—particularly for coffee, corn, cotton, livestock, and …

Integrative Masters Project: Hold That Thought: An Original Picture Book, Jordana Blumberg

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Rooted in personal experience, this picture book follows a group of young children who each listen in their own unique way. The author drew from her own childhood memories of struggling to meet classroom expectations — particularly the challenge of holding back when she had something to say — to craft a story that validates the experiences of children who don't always fit the traditional mold of a "good listener."

Hydrogeochemical And Redox Controls On Nitrate And Arsenic Co-Occurrence In The Western Kansas High Plains Aquifer (Usa): A Composite Health Risk Assessment And The Case For Risk-Informed Private Well Governance, Jonathan Kuffour Owusu Jan 2026

Hydrogeochemical And Redox Controls On Nitrate And Arsenic Co-Occurrence In The Western Kansas High Plains Aquifer (Usa): A Composite Health Risk Assessment And The Case For Risk-Informed Private Well Governance, Jonathan Kuffour Owusu

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Fifty-one private domestic wells across western Kansas were sampled to quantify nitrate and arsenic occurrence, identify geochemical controls, and evaluate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks for adult and child receptors in a region where groundwater serves as the primary drinking water source with no routine regulatory oversight. Samples were analyzed for major ions, nutrients, and trace elements by ICP-MS, ion chromatography, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Shapiro-Wilk testing confirmed non-normal distributions for both contaminants; inter-county comparisons were therefore conducted using Kruskal-Wallis tests with Dunn's post-hoc correction. Health risk was quantified via chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard quotient (HQ), HQ-based Water Quality Index …

The Use Of Visual Autobiographies In First, Second, And Third-Generation Children Of Immigrants In Navigating Belonging And Identity, Sorprisela Martinez

Art Therapy | Master's Theses

This study explored how autobiographical artmaking supports adolescents of immigrant-origin in understanding identity and sense of belonging through visual and narrative reflection on personal stories. The qualitative research approach was guided by three research questions examining: (1) the ways autobiographical work expresses complexities of immigrant heritage and multiple identities; (2) how narrative lens supports a deeper interpretation of autobiographical expressions; and (3) how adolescents’ understanding of their parents’ migration stories contributes to their own identity formation and self-presentation. Seven adolescents participated in a two-session, arts-based process that included creating autobiographical books, discussion of their images, and reflection on their cultural …

Escape Probability: Rethinking Wartime Protection Of Nuclear Facilities, Pearle M. Lipinski Jan 2026

Escape Probability: Rethinking Wartime Protection Of Nuclear Facilities, Pearle M. Lipinski

Michigan Journal of International Law

The 2022 Russian attacks on the Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhia nuclear facilities in Ukraine shocked the international community. Claims that the attacks constituted war crimes immediately entered the public consciousness, and a flurry of opinions were set forth on the international humanitarian law (“IHL”) protections afforded to nuclear plants, focusing on Article 56 of Additional Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions, which provides special protection to nuclear electrical generating stations. These opinions primarily focused on the immediate applicability and shortcomings of Article 56 on the attacks at hand, often operating on the presumption that a massively consequential environmental and humanitarian disaster …

Equilibrium Stability Under Nuclear Confrontation, Martin Bohner, A. A. Martynyuk Jan 2026

Equilibrium Stability Under Nuclear Confrontation, Martin Bohner, A. A. Martynyuk

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article proposes and analyzes mathematical models of confrontation between two and n countries, including countries with nuclear weapons. The proposed models are based on a generalization of Richardson's well-known mathematical model of the arms race. Namely, the factor of hostility is filled with expanded content, including public opinion and the armed forces of the opposing countries. Qualitative analysis of confrontation models is carried out by the method of Lyapunov functions and by applying nonlinear integral inequalities. As a result of the analysis, the conditions for the stability of the equilibrium state of the opposing countries are established, and the …

Effective Deep Learning Architectures For Structured Data Analysis And Generation, Md Atik Ahamed Jan 2026

Effective Deep Learning Architectures For Structured Data Analysis And Generation, Md Atik Ahamed

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

The effective utilization of structured data is fundamental to modern machine learning, yet it presents distinct challenges in both predictive analysis and generative modeling. Traditional deep learning architectures, particularly Transformers, often suffer from quadratic computational complexity when processing long sequences. This dissertation addresses these limitations by introducing novel architectures based on State-Space Models (SSMs) and Diffusion Models. In the area of predictive analysis, we focus on overcoming the computational bottlenecks of attention mechanisms for tabular and time-series data. First, we introduce MambaTab, a selective state-space architecture designed for efficient tabular classification. By leveraging the linear complexity of SSMs, MambaTab significantly …
