Concurrent Hnf1a (Mody3) And Pdxi (Mody4) Variants In A Young Adult And Critical Therapeutic Implications, Shay-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Matthew Doan, Megan Wesling

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

BACKGROUND: Monogenic diabetes accounts for approximately 1–5% of diabetes cases and is frequently misclassified. Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) includes 14 subtypes with distinct pathophysiology and therapeutic implications. Digenic MODY, caused by pathogenic variants in more than one MODY gene, occurs in well under 1% of cases and poses unique diagnostic and management challenges. We report the first known case of concurrent HNF1A (MODY3) and PDX1 (MODY4) mutations, highlighting important clinical and therapeutic considerations.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male with digenic MODY due to MODY3 (HNF1A) and MODY4 (PDX1) mutations presented for team-based adult outpatient diabetes management following transition …

An Unusual Source Of A Lethal Pathogen: Paeniclostridium Sordellii Bacteremia In Acute Cholecystitis, Myrna Garcia, Leena Algarin, Olutoyin Abitoye, Rachel Gnanaprakasam

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

Paeniclostridium sordellii is a spore-forming, gram-positive, anaerobic bacilli known for its highly virulent toxin production, often leading to fulminant sepsis and shock. It is most commonly associated with gynecologic infections and necrotizing soft tissue infections associated with intravenous drug use. However, reports of P. sordellii bacteremia in the setting of gall bladder infections are quite rare. This case report highlights an unusual presentation of P. sordellii infection with bloodstream infection originating from acute cholecystitis, demonstrating a non-fulminant clinical course and successful treatment with ceftriaxone.

Ashwagandha-Associated Liver Injury: A Systematic Literature Review, David Teplitsky, Jacob Sebaugh, Danielle Ford, Rashid Syed

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

Background: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), an herb with origins in Ayurvedic medicine, has recently grown in global popularity due to its reported stress- and anxiety-relieving properties. While generally regarded as safe, emerging cases in medical literature have raised concern for its ability to cause drug- or herb-induced liver injury (DILI/HILI). As use of this supplement rises, it is particularly important to characterize ashwagandha’s potential hepatotoxicity.

Methods: Cases of ashwagandha-induced liver injury were collected by accessing PubMed, Europe PMC, Google Scholar, and the HCA Healthcare Library and searching combinations of the terms “liver” or “hepatic” and one of the following names for …

The Justice For Victims Of War Crimes Act: A Dangerous Expansion Of Universal Jurisdiction To Non-International Armed Conflicts, Yuyan (Nicole) Zhang Jan 2026

The Justice For Victims Of War Crimes Act: A Dangerous Expansion Of Universal Jurisdiction To Non-International Armed Conflicts, Yuyan (Nicole) Zhang

Michigan Journal of International Law

Universal jurisdiction over war crimes committed in noninternational armed conflict (“NIACs”) has yet to develop a firm legal foundation under international law. The Justice for the Victims of War Crimes Act of 2023, however, amended the War Crimes Statute (18 U.S.C. § 2441) and extended universal jurisdiction to NIACs. This overreach risks infringing on the sovereignty of NIAC-affected states and destabilizing their ongoing peace processes. Many such states prioritize reconciliation through mechanisms like truth commissions over retributive justice through criminal trials. The prosecution of their nationals under U.S. law could undermine their sovereign decisions and unravel delicate efforts toward peace. …

The Impact Of Vulnerability On Building Trust: A Qualitative Study Of Superintendents In Northern California, Jasmin Hasmukhlal Patel

Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand and explain how exemplary superintendents in Northern California practice vulnerability to build trust within their organizations, guided by Brené Brown’s framework of vulnerability-based leadership: Authenticity, courage over comfort, curiosity and learning, practicing empathy, and leading with heart. An additional purpose was to examine the challenges these leaders encounter when practicing vulnerability in complex public education contexts. This study addresses a gap in leadership research by providing empirical insight into how vulnerability functions as a trust-building practice at the highest level of K–12 educational leadership.

Methodology: A qualitative phenomenological design was …

Transversal Storytelling | Wintersession 2026 Syllabus, Patrick Buhr, Movement Lab Jan 2026

Transversal Storytelling | Wintersession 2026 Syllabus, Patrick Buhr, Movement Lab

Course Materials

What does "story" mean? How can stories help us understand what appears profoundly different from us? How might seemingly unrelated elements converge in poetic resonance?

A “transversal line” cuts across worlds — moving through unexpected spaces, ideas, people, and moments. In this course, we explore how such crossings can inspire new forms of expanded storytelling and technique, looking at vivid examples from animation, film, coding, and performance. The students will choose contrasting elements (stories / characters / places) from their personal experience and together explore artistic ways of creating meaningful transitions and intersections.

The class will culminate in the development …

Copyright Disincentives, Thomas D. Haley Jan 2026

Copyright Disincentives, Thomas D. Haley

UF Law Faculty Publications

Over the last decade, a spate of high-profile copyright infringement lawsuits rattled the music industry. Controversy followed in the wake of multi-million-dollar damages awards, with criticism emanating from courts, scholars, and musicians alike. The basic logic of the critique is sound: the specter of such massive liability for small and inadvertent similarities disincentivizes the creation of new music. But the disincentive effect remains curiously under-theorized. This Article develops the literature’s first nuanced account of this disincentive theory, drawing on analysis of hundreds of copyright dockets as well as interviews with musicians to show that the feared disincentive has not come …

Reconceiving Safety Regulation For Ai And Ml Medical Software, Barbara J. Evans, Eric S. Rosenthal, Azra Bihorac Jan 2026

Reconceiving Safety Regulation For Ai And Ml Medical Software, Barbara J. Evans, Eric S. Rosenthal, Azra Bihorac

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article explores the challenges of regulating AI and ML clinical decision support tools intended to assist trained health care professionals in delivering clinical care. Two old, twentieth-century regulatory models have dominated discussions of medical AI policy since 2013. Thinking inside these old regulatory boxes has not produced effective regulatory solutions to address the novel risks AI poses in clinical care. The first regulatory box treats software as a medical device, which tasks medical device regulators with making software safe but neglects the crucial roles physicians, nurses, administrators, medical practice regulators, and other health oversight bodies must also play to …
