Early Insights From A Multi-Centre National Stroke Surveillance Initiative In Tanzania, Sarah Shali Matuja, Azan Nyundo, Emmanuel Assey, Joel Bwelemo, Marieke Dekker, Sarah Urasa, Emanuel Makarius, Peter Kishimbo, Philip Adebayo, Paschal Ruggajo

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally, with sub-Saharan Africa, bearing the greatest burden. Tanzania has only one active stroke registry, limiting evidence-based care and policy development. We aimed to expand the registry into a multi-centre study across eight major tertiary hospitals to generate baseline data for a national stroke registry.

Methods: From January to August 2024, we analysed de-identified data from adults (≥18 years) admitted with a World Health Organisation defined stroke. Data collected included demographics, risk factors, imaging, and in-hospital mortality. Logistic regression identified predictors of mortality.

Results: A total of 1000 patients were …

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Background Kaposi sarcoma is a malignant vascular neoplasm caused by human herpesvirus-8. It is mostly seen in immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or organ transplants. Cutaneous and mucosal Kaposi sarcoma manifestation is common; however, Kaposi sarcoma may involve the visceral organs. Iatrogenic or drug-induced Kaposi sarcoma may develop in immunocompromised patients undergoing immunosuppressive medication. It is quite uncommon for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases on immunosuppressive medication to develop intestinal Kaposi sarcoma. This case report describes the clinical presentation of steroid-induced disseminated upper gastrointestinal Kaposi sarcoma in a patient with underlying Crohn’s disease and examines …

The Festival Of “Geristoba” (The Feast Of The Moon) In Shida Kartli, Associated With The Cult Of Saint George, Giorgi Sosiashvili Prof. Dr., Aleksandre Mgebrishvili Prof. Dr. Mar 2026

The Festival Of “Geristoba” (The Feast Of The Moon) In Shida Kartli, Associated With The Cult Of Saint George, Giorgi Sosiashvili Prof. Dr., Aleksandre Mgebrishvili Prof. Dr.

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This study examines Geristoba, the Saint George feast historically celebrated around the Church of Saint George in Geri (Shida Kartli, Georgia) and its related sanctuary in Arbo. Drawing on the Chronicle of Geri (compiled by Deacon Iakob Lomouri), 19th–20th-century ethnographic accounts (S. Makalatia), historical notes (A. Garsevanishvili, Z. Chichinadze), and period press reports (Tsnobis Purtseli, Mtskemsi), the article reconstructs the site’s foundation traditions—attributed to King Pharsman and later royal patronage under Queen Tamar—alongside the ritual calendar and practices. It argues that Geristoba preserves a layered syncretism: Christian veneration of Saint George overlaid on earlier lunar cult symbolism, visible in the …

The Dumbarton Flyer Initiative Study: A Conceptual Plan, Aaron Posternack Mar 2026

The Dumbarton Flyer Initiative Study: A Conceptual Plan, Aaron Posternack

City and Regional Planning

The Dumbarton Flyer Initiative Study is a comprehensive and ambitious vision for a study corridor that stretches from Fremont on the East Bay to Redwood City on the Peninsula within the San Francisco Bay Area (Bay Area) of California. It advocates for significant changes to how localities and regions embrace transportation and land use planning. The literature asserts that these two aspects of planning should be inseparable from each other. This assertion particularly holds if the Bay Area seeks to construct additional rail transit lines and to maximize their benefits. Additionally, the transportation mode of “automated light metro”, which this …

Pointwise Self-Homeomorphic Generalized Inverse Limits, Ali H. Ali, Faruq A. Mena, Robert Paul Roe Mar 2026

Pointwise Self-Homeomorphic Generalized Inverse Limits, Ali H. Ali, Faruq A. Mena, Robert Paul Roe

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we find uncountable families of generalized inverse sequences on intervals, where the bonding functions consist of a finite number of line segments, such that the inverse limit spaces of these sequences are pointwise self-homeomorphic continua. We give several examples of pointwise self-homeomorphic continua obtained in this manner including the dendrite D3 and a dendrite containing Dω. The dendrite D3 was obtained previously, by others, as a generalized inverse limit but the bonding function in that example contained infinitely many line segments. We show that the techniques we use on intervals can be extended to inverse limits where …

The Lawyer’S Swan Lake: Generative Ai, Legal Epistemology, And The Nondelegable Duty To Think, Angie Zinzilieta Mar 2026

The Lawyer’S Swan Lake: Generative Ai, Legal Epistemology, And The Nondelegable Duty To Think, Angie Zinzilieta

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

Generative artificial intelligence (“GAI”) has entered law wearing the costume of competence: fluent, confident, and fast. But legal practice is not a memory sport despite the bar exam. Lawyers are paid to create, test, and refine ideas (arguments, narratives, and theories of liability) inside an adversarial system that punishes error, rewards precision, and demands accountability. This article argues that the central risk of GAI in legal work is not merely “hallucinations” or confidentiality breaches; it is epistemic atrophy, an outsourcing of the intellectual labor by which lawyers understand where law comes from, how it changes, and why it applies. Using …

Behind The Black Box: Employer Accountability For Algorithmic Hiring Bias, Nicole Capp Mar 2026

Behind The Black Box: Employer Accountability For Algorithmic Hiring Bias, Nicole Capp

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

AI hiring tools are now ubiquitous in employment, promising efficiency, cost savings, and reduced human bias. Yet these systems often operate as “black boxes,” replicating or amplifying existing biases and raising significant legal concerns under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Even without discriminatory intent, AI trained on historical hiring data can produce disparate impacts, exposing employers to liability for outcomes they cannot fully understand or explain. Plaintiffs face steep challenges in litigating such claims, particularly in identifying specific practices, demonstrating causation, and proposing feasible alternatives. This article examines how AI perpetuates discrimination in hiring, analyzes the …

An Odd Protocol For An Agent-Based Model Of Hepatitis C Virus Transmission In A Two-Group Structural Heterogeneous Syringe-Sharing Network (M2), Seun Ale, Que Nguyen Dr., John D. Kelleher Prof., Elizabeth Hunter Dr. Mar 2026

Reports

The model described in this ODD is an agent-based model of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission among people who inject drugs (PWID). The model extended a baseline homogeneous model by incorporating structural heterogeneity via a two-group interaction framework. The syringe-sharing population in the model is divided into inner and outer circle groups representing individuals with differing levels of syringe-sharing interaction intensity. While all agents share the same syringe-sharing probability and epidemiological processes remain identical across agents, the number of daily interaction opportunities differs between the two groups. Interactions in the model are generated dynamically using proximity-based sampling at each timestep …

An Odd Protocol For An Agent-Based Model Of Hepatitis C Virus Transmission In A Three-Group Structural Heterogeneous Syringe-Sharing Network (M3), Seun Ale, Que Nguyen Dr., John D. Kelleher Prof., Elizabeth Hunter Dr. Mar 2026

Reports

The model described in this ODD is an agent-based model of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission among people who inject drugs (PWID). The model incorporates structural heterogeneity through a three-group interaction framework. The syringe-sharing population in the model is divided into core, inner, and outer circle groups representing individuals with high, moderate, and low levels of syringe-sharing interaction intensity, respectively. While the syringe-sharing rate and all epidemiological processes remain identical across agents, the number of daily interaction opportunities differs by agent grouping, capturing variation in structural position within the syringe-sharing network. Interactions are generated dynamically using proximity-based sampling at each …

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) is becoming a serious threat to rice production in the Philippines, especially in direct-seeding rice areas, owing to its high competitiveness and its similarity to cultivated rice in morphology and ecological requirements. However, weedy rice can be considered both a threat that endangers rice production and an opportunity, as it offers a potential source of novel genes for rice improvement. This study evaluated the extent of weedy rice infestation in direct-seeding areas in the Visayas, measured the phenotypic and genotypic diversity of collected weedy rice ecotypes using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, and …

Sparks Under Ashes, Ani Sargsyan Mar 2026

Sparks Under Ashes, Ani Sargsyan

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Rooted in hope, reflections on longing, family history, and the contemporary Armenian experience take precedence in Sparks Under Ashes. The title of the show itself derives from my great-grandfather’s notebook, which details his unjust exile during the Great Purge of the Soviet era and other life experiences. His handwriting becomes ingrained in my work as both our marks collide through painting, drawing, and transfer processes to bridge the time between us and celebrate generations of resilience.

Acts of endurance are crucial for Armenia’s survival because attempts of erasure have always been prominent, with the 1915 genocide being the darkest …

The Elder Economic Security Standard™ Index: Methodology Overview, Center For Social And Demographic Research On Aging, University Of Massachusetts Boston, Jan Mutchler, Nidya Velasco Roldan, Michelle Ward, Ceara Somerville, Caitlin E. Coyle

Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Publications

The Elder Index illustrates how living costs vary geographically (specifically, by county, metropolitan area, and state), and based on the characteristics of households. Costs are calculated based on household size (one person age 65 or older, two persons age 65 or older), housing tenure (owner with no mortgage, renter, owner with a mortgage), and health status (excellent, good, poor). The expenses included in the Elder Index cover basic needs of older households, including shelter, medical care, food, and transportation; the costs reflect average market costs and do not take into account any needs-based subsidies. The Elder Index helps answer important …

Same, But Better: Modernizing A Professional Soccer Team’S Logo, Jessica A. Halladay Mar 2026

Same, But Better: Modernizing A Professional Soccer Team’S Logo, Jessica A. Halladay

Graphic Communication

Valencia CF is a historic soccer club with a highly recognizable crest, and this project focuses on modernizing that identity while preserving its core elements. Rather than creating a full rebrand, the project follows an identity evolution approach, refining the crest to improve clarity and adaptability across digital and physical applications. Guided by research in brand identity, social identity, and visual perception, the redesign focuses on four key elements: the bat, crest shape, typography, and soccer ball. Each component was simplified through iterative sketching and critique-based refinement to improve readability and consistency while maintaining recognizability. The final design demonstrates how …

Did A.T. Still, Do, Have An Md Degree?, David B. Fuller

PCOM Scholarly Works

A.T. Still, DO (1828–1917), founder of osteopathic medicine, was a licensed physician practicing in late 19th- and early 20th-century America. Although many assume he held an MD degree, the reality is more complex. Examining whether Dr. Still earned an MD degree provides important insight into the origins of osteopathic medicine and the profession that followed.

Comparative Judicial Enforcement, Rosa Hayes, Angela Hefti Mar 2026

Comparative Judicial Enforcement, Rosa Hayes, Angela Hefti

Washington Law Review

Almost immediately upon his second inauguration, President Trump took several actions that subvert longstanding norms, contravene long-settled Supreme Court precedent, and disrespect the authority of the coordinate branches to check executive branch excess. The Administration’s actions pose both immediate and long-term challenges to the American constitutional order, with many scholars and citizens believing that the United States is in the midst of a constitutional crisis. At minimum, the Trump Administration’s actions have illuminated sticking points in both functionalist and formalist conceptions of the separation of powers. For this model of shared but distributed power to function, each branch must give …

A Right Without A Remedy: The Court’S Failure To Quantify The Agua Caliente’S Federal Reserved Water Rights, Lauren Block

Washington Law Review

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has inhabited the Coachella Valley region since time immemorial. Through a series of 1870s executive orders, the United States government reserved land for the Tribe to establish a permanent home within the bounds of their ancestral homeland. Underlying this permanent home is the Coachella Valley aquifer, a groundwater source that has been in a continuous state of overdraft for decades. Against the backdrop of climate change, water scarcity, and other concerns, the Tribe sued Coachella Valley’s water management agencies in 2013, alleging the Tribe owned a portion of the water in the aquifer …

The Illusion Of Causality In Llms: A Developmentally Grounded Analysis Of Semantic Scaffolding And Benchmark–Capability Mismatches, Daisuke Akiba Mar 2026

The Illusion Of Causality In Llms: A Developmentally Grounded Analysis Of Semantic Scaffolding And Benchmark–Capability Mismatches, Daisuke Akiba

Publications and Research

Recent benchmarks increasingly report that large language models (LLMs) exhibit human-like causal reasoning abilities, including counterfactual inference and intervention planning. However, many such evaluations rely on domains that are heavily represented in training data and embed strong semantic cues, raising the possibility that apparent causal competence may reflect semantic pattern recombination rather than structure-sensitive causal reasoning. Drawing on human developmental theories of causal induction, this perspective argues that genuine causal understanding requires robustness to novelty and reliance on conditional structure rather than semantic familiarity. To illustrate the testability of this claim, the paper includes a pilot demonstration using synthetic causal …

Cataclysm Within The Court: The Bosnian Genocide Case And Its Implications On Historical Understanding Of Calamity, Alexandria Currier

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Bosnian Genocide remains one of the most challenging cases within the history of modern conflict and calamity. As the first occurrence in which the International Court of Justice applied the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to a state, the International Court of Justice's legal proceedings on the Bosnian Genocide set a new standard for the obligations of the international community to act in the occurrence of genocide. This research aims to clarify the nature of the 1992-1995 conflict between the nations of Serbia-Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina using primary source documentation, modern commentary, and the …

In The Miery Swamp: Metacomet And Memory, Allison Rose, Marianne Holdzkom

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

Abstract for “In the Miery Swamp: Metacomet and Memory”, written by Allison Rose and sponsored by Dr. Marianne Holdzkom

Memorials have become omnipresent ties to our communal past. Plaques and dedications materialize in our town squares. Statues loom over our city parks. Monuments tower over our cemeteries. A large issue facing public historians today is the disconnect between the original intent of public memorials and the collective representation of diverse histories. “In the Miery Swamp: Metacomet and Memory” addresses how interactions with the public alter and transform four public memorials. Through a chronological and historical analysis of four monuments to …

Less Fisher More Doe: Non-Testimonial Mental Content And A New Rule For Unlocking Digital Devices, Jordan Wallace-Wolf

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Roughly fifteen years ago, courts started to regularly confront a fact pattern that I refer to as the unlocking scenario. In this kind of case, the government seeks evidence on a criminal defendant’s digital device, but it cannot access it due to a sufficiently strong system of password protection or encryption. May the government compel the defendant to unlock the device, or would this compulsion make the defendant “a witness against himself”?

Courts gave different answers to this question right from the start, but their answers have started to diverge even more markedly in recent years, notwithstanding two formative papers …
