"This chapter discusses the nature and value of property rights. It will explain (1) what property rights are, (2) the relationship between private property and economic development, and (3) some objections to structuring societies around such rights. This discussion throughout focuses on the decentralizing nature of private property rights, asking what implications it has from a philosophical, but also social and political, point of view."

Extending Tensor Virtual Machine To Support Deep-Learning Accelerators With Convolution Cores, Yanzhao Wang, Fei Xie May 2022

Extending Tensor Virtual Machine To Support Deep-Learning Accelerators With Convolution Cores, Yanzhao Wang, Fei Xie

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Deep-learning accelerators are increasingly popular. There are two prevalent accelerator architectures: one based on general matrix multiplication units and the other on convolution cores. However, Tensor Virtual Machine (TVM), a widely used deep-learning compiler stack, does not support the latter. This paper proposes a general framework for extending TVM to support deep-learning accelerators with convolution cores. We have applied it to two well-known accelerators: Nvidia's NVDLA and Bitmain's BM1880 successfully. Deep-learning workloads can now be readily deployed to these accelerators through TVM and executed efficiently. This framework can extend TVM to other accelerators with minimum effort.

(Un)Matched: Racialized Narratives Of U.S.-Based Japanese Men, Masculinity, And Heterosexuality In Online Dating Apps, Keisuke Kimura

Communication ETDs

In this study, I documented and examined U.S.-based Japanese men’s narratives about their day-to-day experiences in and across online dating contexts. Through the analysis of narratives, I critiqued how multilayered differences (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and more) working with dominant social structures affect their everyday experiences within the spectrum of power, privilege, and marginalization in the transnational space. Specifically, the overarching purposes and goals of this study were to better understand U.S.-based Japanese men’s online dating experiences and to critique the relationalities of how Japanese men’s narratives (i.e., micro-level context) and their beliefs/attitudes within and between cultural communities …

Borderline Re-Order: Negotiating The Edge Between City And Greenspace, Jeremy Taylor Morgan May 2022

Borderline Re-Order: Negotiating The Edge Between City And Greenspace, Jeremy Taylor Morgan

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Does development of urban areas naturally lies at odds with maintaining any memory of their historic character, e.g. historic artifacts, structures, land? If so, such a perspective may have warrant. The Atlanta area serves as an easy example: the Loew’s Grand was conveniently burned down by arsonists after it received historic status and protection; the Fox Theatre was almost redeveloped into a parking deck, and; the placard for the site of Leo Frank’s lynching was moved across the street to make room for an entrance ramp to a toll freeway.

But this single perspective, or prejudice rather, despite warrant, is …

Establishing Trust In Vehicle-To-Vehicle Coordination: A Sensor Fusion Approach, Jakob Veselsky, Jack West, Isaac Ahlgren, George K. Thiruvathukal, Neil Klingensmith, Abhinav Goel, Wenxin Jiang, James C. Davis, Kyuin Lee, Younghyun Kim

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) use diverse sensors to understand their surroundings as they continually make safety- critical decisions. However, establishing trust with other AVs is a key prerequisite because safety-critical decisions cannot be made based on data shared from untrusted sources. Existing protocols require an infrastructure network connection and a third-party root of trust to establish a secure channel, which are not always available.

In this paper, we propose a sensor-fusion approach for mobile trust establishment, which combines GPS and visual data. The combined data forms evidence that one vehicle is nearby another, which is a strong indication that it is …

A Multi-Species Study On Several Types Of Visitor Effects On The Behavior And Physiology Of Animals At The Oregon Zoo, Laurel Berylline Fink

Dissertations and Theses

The visitor effect on zoo animals is one of the expanding research topics in zoo animal research. As visitors are a mandatory feature of zoological institutions, understanding their effects on zoo animals is imperative for maximizing zoo animal welfare. Zoo animals are subject to many anthropogenic influences: visual, olfactory, and audible, for example. This dissertation investigates several of the effects of visitor presence and its relative influence on six mammalian species: cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus), African painted dogs (Lycaon pictus), Asian elephants (Elephas maximus indicus & Elephas maximus borneensis), giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata & …

Faculty Publications

article-in-cell simulations of a 1.6 MV, 800 kA, and 50 ns pinched-beam diode have been completed with emphasis placed on the quality of the ion beams produced. Simulations show the formation of multiple regions in the electron beam flow characterized by locally high charge and current density (“hot spots”). As ions flow through the electron-space-charge cloud, these hot spots electrostatically attract ions to produce a non-uniform ion current distribution. The length of the cavity extending beyond the anode-to-cathode gap (i.e., behind the cathode tip) influences both the number and amplitude of hot spots. A longer cavity length increases the number …

The Value Of Rare Genetic Variation In The Prediction Of Common Obesity In European Ancestry Populations, Zhe Wang, Shing Wan Choi, Nathalie Chami, Eric Boerwinkle, Myriam Fornage, Susan Redline, Joshua C. Bis, Jennifer A. Brody, Bruce M. Psaty, John Blangero

School of Medicine Publications

Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) aggregate the effects of genetic variants across the genome and are used to predict risk of complex diseases, such as obesity. Current PRSs only include common variants (minor allele frequency (MAF) ≥1%), whereas the contribution of rare variants in PRSs to predict disease remains unknown. Here, we examine whether augmenting the standard common variant PRS (PRScommon) with a rare variant PRS (PRSrare) improves prediction of obesity. We used genome-wide genotyped and imputed data on 451,145 European-ancestry participants of the UK Biobank, as well as whole exome sequencing (WES) data on 184,385 participants. We performed single variant …

A Mixed-Methods Examination Of Transgender Youth Desistence, Mirae J. Fornander May 2022

A Mixed-Methods Examination Of Transgender Youth Desistence, Mirae J. Fornander

Research Days

Watch recording of live presentation

Background: Access to gender-affirming medical care (GAMC) for transgender/gender diverse (TGD) individuals is one of the most pressing social justice issues of our time. Research has begun to identify the benefits of GAMC. However, little is known about the healthcare needs of TGD youth, especially those who discontinue GAMC. Available literature lacks clear and consistent terms to define TGD youth who stop care. Further, a significant criticism of current research is the assumption that discontinuing care is equivalent to detransitioning. There are no studies, to our knowledge, that differentiate between TGD youth who choose to …

Healthcare Utilization Of Victims Of Commercial Sexual Exploitation Compared To Non-Victims, Cree Kachelski

Research Days

Watch recording of live presentation

Background: Approximately 17,000 US children are victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) annually. Nearly 75% of adolescent CSEC victims received medical care within 6 months prior to identification. Screening tools have been developed based on known characteristics of CSEC victims; however, little is known about how CSEC victims compare to non-CSEC adolescents in healthcare utilization. Thus, appropriate medical CSEC screening settings are unknown.

Objectives/Goal: We aimed to identify where and how often adolescents presented to medical care in the 12 months prior to CSEC identification. We hypothesized that compared to controls, CSEC positive …

Antifascism And Wildness. “Partisan Ecologies” Between The Spanish Civil War And The Global Warming Era, Jaime Vindel May 2022

Antifascism And Wildness. “Partisan Ecologies” Between The Spanish Civil War And The Global Warming Era, Jaime Vindel

Artl@s Bulletin

This short essay uses the concept of “partisan ecologies” in order to analyse certain past and present chapters on the relationship between anti-fascism and nature. According to the Swedish eco- Marxist Andreas Malm, wilderness has not only represented an essentialist idea resulting from the projections of conservationist environmentalism about a supposedly untouched nature, but has also been one of the real spaces of a modern antagonism. Taking this theoretical point of departure, the text describes the Alpine Battalion of the Sierra del Guadarrama during the Spanish Civil War and its resonances in some contemporary events.

Partisan Dilemmas Between Activism And Socially Engaged Art: Situations In Loisaida At The End Of The Seventies, Olga FernáNdez López

Artl@s Bulletin

The end of 1970s is an interesting moment to understand the epistemic shift that involves the passage from partisan artistic activism to contemporary socially engaged art. Then, a significant convergence took place in the neighborhood of Loisaida (NYC), where artists and local residents coincided in their modes of action. However, its subsequent cultural interpretations have overlooked each other. Art history cosmopolitan approaches clashed with migration identities, traversed by victimhood, but also by transnational heritages. This article examines and reunites both traditions looking for a reparative art history.

An Antifascist Biennale: ‘Libertà Al Cile’ In And From Venice, Anita Orzes May 2022

An Antifascist Biennale: ‘Libertà Al Cile’ In And From Venice, Anita Orzes

Artl@s Bulletin

The article analyses the section Libertà al Cile [Liberty for Chile] of 1974 Venice Biennale. Even if this cultural proposal against Pinochet’s regime had a significant role and was the most visible face of La Biennale per una cultura democratica e antifascista [The Biennial for a democratic and anti- fascist culture], a detailed study of this exhibition is still missing. The aim of this article is to contextualize Libertà al Cile within the project of the New Biennale and its new exhibition formula, as well as within the ties of brotherhood that united Italy and Chile by paying attention to …

Counter-Archival Surplus: Remembering The Partisan Rupture In Post-Socialist Times, Gal Kirn May 2022

Counter-Archival Surplus: Remembering The Partisan Rupture In Post-Socialist Times, Gal Kirn

Artl@s Bulletin

The article departs critically from the postsocialist condition in Yugoslavia marked by conservative revisionism that transformed the memorial landscape. The nation-building process took a clearly negative attitude towards the Yugoslav, socialist and partisan/antifascist past. The first part of the text will shortly present the notion of »counter-archive« and the central features of the method. The second part of the text will offer a short analysis of four case studies: A short partisan poem written by Iztok, a drawing by Dore Klemenčič, a partisan dance by Marta Paulin and a partisan film by Rudi Omota.

Clime: Command Line Metrics For Git Projects, Nicholas Synovic

Computer Science Research Seminars and Symposia

Numerous efforts in repository mining have focused
on mining repositories and reporting basic metrics. Many efforts
are focused on being able to evaluate (or score) projects based
on these metrics. Yet little attention has been given to in-
process metrics, which are a critical tool for improving software
quality as agile projects become more established projects and
require regular maintenance. We present CLIME (Command Line
Metrics), a user-installable toolset for computing a wide variety
of classical and modern process metrics, including code size,
issue spoilage, issue/defect density, productivity, and bus factor.
CLIME also includes a tool to identify projects based …
