Abstract Argumentation And Answer Set Programming: Two Faces Of Nelson’S Logic, Jorge Fandinno, Luis Fariñas Del Cerro May 2022

Abstract Argumentation And Answer Set Programming: Two Faces Of Nelson’S Logic, Jorge Fandinno, Luis Fariñas Del Cerro

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this work, we show that both logic programming and abstract argumentation frameworks can be interpreted in terms of Nelson’s constructive logic N4. We do so by formalising, in this logic, two principles that we call noncontradictory inference and strengthened closed world assumption: the first states that no belief can be held based on contradictory evidence while the latter forces both unknown and contradictory evidence to be regarded as false. Using these principles, both logic programming and abstract argumentation frameworks are translated into constructive logic in a modular way and using the object language. Logic programming implication and abstract argumentation …

Kraft Lignin With Improved Homogeneity Recovered Directly From Black Liquor And Its Application In Flexible Polyurethane Foams, Peng Quan, Alper Kiziltas, Akash Gondaliya, Mohsen Siahkamari, Mojgan Nejad, Xinfeng Xie

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

An effective method that can produce a large amount of Kraft lignin with improved homogeneity is strongly desired for Kraft lignin's high-value applications and scientific advancements. Herein, a one-pot acid-catalyzed liquefaction method was developed to recover Kraft lignin directly from black liquor. The recovery rate and properties of the recovered lignin were affected by the reaction time, reaction temperature, moisture content (MC), pH, and acid categories. The highest lignin recovery rate of 75% was achieved when the concentrated black liquor (MC = 25%) reacted with methanol at pH = 7 and 160 °C for 10 min using acetic acid as …

Social Infrastructure (“Third Places”) Is Not Distributed Equally Across The U.S., Danielle Rhubart, Yue Sun, Claire Pendergrast, Shannon M. Monnat

Population Health Research Brief Series

Third places are the physical spaces in a community where people can gather to connect and share resources, support, and information. They can help support health because they promote social interaction, community trust, and resource and information sharing. This data slice shows that third places are not evenly distributed across the U.S. Results show less availability of third places per capita in neighborhoods (Census tracts) with larger shares of non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics and larger shares of residents in poverty. The authors also found that third places are in shorter supply in rural neighborhoods than in urban neighborhoods, with the …

Development Of An Analytical Method For Determination Of Lead And Cadmium In Biological Materials By Gfaas Using Escherichia Coli As Model Substance, Michelle Catherine Gende, Martina Schmeling

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this work, an analytical method was developed for the determination of lead and cadmium in biological samples using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Escherichia coli (E. coli) was chosen as model substance for this purpose as it is readily available in most laboratories and can be quickly and easily prepared with a high turnaround rate. Four different sample preparation methods were initially evaluated with respect to percent recovery, limit of detection, and limit of quantification, and the most promising one was developed further. The final process involving microwave assisted digestion of the sample with nitric acid …

Personality Disorders In Relation To Crime, Ann Difrank May 2022

Personality Disorders In Relation To Crime, Ann Difrank

D.U.Quark

Personality disorders, including borderline and antisocial, are mental disorders that influence the thoughts and behaviors of affected individuals. There is currently a lack of studies in the relationship between these individuals and crime rates, though it is often found criminal offenders have said disorders. These disorders can be traced down to neurological and biochemical dimensions, including disruptions in brain function and chemical levels. These disorders can also be developed from childhood abuse or other disruptions in adolescent development. Though all personality disorders are developed similarly, the differences in presentation affect the type of crime committed and specific crime scene behaviors. …

Protecting Systems From Exploits Using Language-Theoretic Security, Prashant Anantharaman May 2022

Protecting Systems From Exploits Using Language-Theoretic Security, Prashant Anantharaman

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Any computer program processing input from the user or network must validate the input. Input-handling vulnerabilities occur in programs when the software component responsible for filtering malicious input---the parser---does not perform validation adequately. Consequently, parsers are among the most targeted components since they defend the rest of the program from malicious input. This thesis adopts the Language-Theoretic Security (LangSec) principle to understand what tools and research are needed to prevent exploits that target parsers. LangSec proposes specifying the syntactic structure of the input format as a formal grammar. We then build a recognizer for this formal grammar to validate any …

Demystifying Mindreading For The Law, Teneille R. Brown May 2022

Demystifying Mindreading For The Law, Teneille R. Brown

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

To lawyers, mindreading conjures up flamboyant images of crystal balls or charlatans. However, it is a deeply serious endeavor for the law. The primary role of fact-finders in civil, criminal, and administrative trials in the United States is to serve as highly-regulated mind readers—to listen to the testimony and decide whether the witnesses are credible and telling the truth. Because it can be so easily biased, we must directly acknowledge how jurors and judges (in addition to voters and employers) automatically and imperfectly read minds. We must remove the “mystique of mindreading,” and see how ordinary assessments of mental states …

Light Management In Iii-V Thin-Film Photovoltaics And Micro-Leds, Julia Rae D'Rozario May 2022

Light Management In Iii-V Thin-Film Photovoltaics And Micro-Leds, Julia Rae D'Rozario

Theses

Light management is essential to improve the performance of optoelectronic devices as they depend on the interaction between photons and device design. This research demonstrates novel approaches to enhance the light absorption in thin-film III-V photovoltaics (PV) and light emission from micrometer-scale light-emitting diodes (μLED). The high power conversion efficiency (PCE) realized in III-V PV makes them attractive power generation sources, especially for off-the-grid space-related missions. Thin-film PV (< 1 μm) offer great tolerance towards the inevitable radiation damage in the space environment as carrier collection is maintained compared to their optically thick counterparts (3-5 μm). To combat transmission loss of photons traveling through the thinned device, this work develops textured back surface reflectors (BSR) to increase the optical path length (OPL) of unabsorbed photons to generate electron-hole pairs. The textures are created via etching techniques and epitaxial regrowth and are characterized by surface imaging and reflectance (R) measurements. The textured BSR with high diffuse R increase the OPL, and the best-known design demonstrates over a four-fold increase in the OPL, which is two times greater than the planar BSR. This research delivers new analyses useful to the PV community, including the lifetime enhancement factor and free-carrier absorption modeling, which aim to improve the PCE in thin-film PV. Modern display technology is constantly integrated into daily use to convey information and connect people worldwide. The next generation of wearable devices requires small-featured displays to achieve high resolution. The μLED delivers value to near-eye displays through low power consumption, long lifetime, high contrast, and increased resolution. As these devices reduce in size, surface states limit the light output power (LOP) at the roughened sidewalls, and the perimeter-to-area ratio must be considered. This research focuses on developing a fabrication process that improves LOP through sidewall treatments. The dry etch process is optimized to reduce surface roughness, and sidewall treatments via wet-chemical etching, in situ etching, and regrowth aim to improve the sidewall quality. Scanning electron microscopy on the LED sidewalls supports the optimized fabrication process. Luminescence characterization reveals that combinations of etching and regrowth suppress non-radiative recombination events. These techniques render pathways to enhance LOP in LEDs smaller than 25 μm x 25 μm.

Scents Of Memory In The Film: Tender Scent, Teng Chen May 2022

Scents Of Memory In The Film: Tender Scent, Teng Chen

Theses

Tender scent is a film about perfumer Rita who finds that her favorite scents are all leading to the memory of her loved one whom she lost forever. Throughout the project year, I tried to visualize the protagonist’s feeling of the scents and deliver the emotions to the audience. There were several versions of the story during scriptwriting. The revisions happened due to the fact of psychology and the build-up of the character arc. The difficulty of blending the character-study story with active and attractive plots made me decide to have a non-linear story structure. We spent three months on …

A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of The Experiences Of Nurse Educators In Developing And Implementing Concurrent Enrollment Adn-Bsn Programs, Janice E. Hawkins

Dissertations

Nursing leaders have called for more bachelor-of-science-in-nursing-(BSN)-prepared nurses to meet workforce demands. There is limited capacity in BSN programs to meet the projected demand. Currently, associate degree in nursing (ADN) programs produce the majority of registered nurses. To increase the number of BSN graduates, nurse educators recommend innovative educational models for seamless progression from the ADN to the BSN. Concurrent enrollment ADN-BSN programs offer one potential model to produce more BSN graduates. The purpose of this study was to describe the process of developing and implementing concurrent enrollment ADN-BSN programs. The research question was as follows: What is the experience …

A Data-Based Framework For Monitoring And Controlling Particulate Systems, Vidhyadhar Manee May 2022

A Data-Based Framework For Monitoring And Controlling Particulate Systems, Vidhyadhar Manee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the limitations of conventional monitoring tools in crystallization is the inability to deal with high solids concentration. Image-based monitoring, in which RGB images of the solution are captured and analyzed by an object detection software, has been a promising alternative. The software used in these tools primarily depends on hand-coded heuristics to distinguish between the signal and the noise. With the recent success of supervised deep learning, a newer paradigm has emerged in which the heuristics can be learnt from labeled images. This approach is founded on the idea that it is easier to develop labels for data …

Oncology Articles

Multiple myeloma (MM) represents 1.8% of all new cancer cases in the U.S. While not curable, advances in treatment, including autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) and maintenance therapy, have dramatically improved progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). We performed a retrospective survival analysis on newly diagnosed MM (NDMM) patients receiving ASCT from 1992−2016 at the Ohio State University. A total of 1001 consecutive NDMM patients were eligible. Patients were split into five groups based on historic changes in novel agents for the treatment of MM. Across the years (1992−2016), there was a statistically significant improvement in both PFS (p …

Mixed Method- How Do Medical-Surgical Nurses Provide Compassionate Care To Patients In The Face Of Adversity?, Diane D. Kret

Theses & Dissertations

Compassion is a quality that is the very essence of nursing. Nurses, as professionals, seek to alleviate suffering. It is through providing compassionate, connected care that nurses can relieve their patients’ suffering. In the midst of adversity such as taking care of ill and dying patients, especially in the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses have been challenged with providing compassionate care despite the increased toll that this may have on them. There is evidence that exposure to these events can cause compassion fatigue and burnout. When these signs of compassion fatigue or compassion burnout are not addressed, nurses have decreased job satisfaction …

Social Activity Promotes Resilience Against Loneliness In Depressed Individuals: A Study Over 14-Days Of Physical Isolation During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Australia, Julie L. Ji, Julian Basanovic, Colin Macleod May 2022

Social Activity Promotes Resilience Against Loneliness In Depressed Individuals: A Study Over 14-Days Of Physical Isolation During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Australia, Julie L. Ji, Julian Basanovic, Colin Macleod

School of Psychology

Loneliness is a subjectively perceived state of social isolation that is associated with negative emotional, cognitive, and physical health outcomes. Physical distancing and shelter-in-place public health responses designed to curb COVID-19 transmission has led to concerns over elevated risk of loneliness. Given that physical isolation does not necessitate social isolation in the age of digital communication, this study investigated the relationship between the frequency of social interaction and loneliness over a two-week period in people engaging in physical distancing and examined whether this relationship was moderated by physical isolation level, age, or depression. A self-selected sample of N = 469 …
