Solid Embedded Telemetry, Pranav Balasubramanian Natarajan
Solid Embedded Telemetry, Pranav Balasubramanian Natarajan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the integration of the Solid decentralized data framework within embedded and legacy energy control systems to enable secure, access-controlled, and interoperable data exchange. Two implementations were developed to evaluate Solid’s practical applicability: an ESP32 client implementing Solid-OIDC authentication and telemetry publication to a Solid Pod, and a Modbus-to-Solid bridge translating Modbus RTU communications into RDF-based data for bidirectional control. Experimental evaluation highlighted the effects of task scheduling and blocking operations on the ESP32, and polling-based communication latency within the Modbus bridge. These findings reveal the architectural and computational trade-offs involved in extending Solid to constrained or protocol-bound …
Effects Of Wetting And Drying On Nutrient Mobilization In Aquatic Systems, Karessa Grace De La Paz
Effects Of Wetting And Drying On Nutrient Mobilization In Aquatic Systems, Karessa Grace De La Paz
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wetting and drying cycles are a fundamental, but underexplored, control on nutrient mobilization and transport in aquatic ecosystems. Such intermittency impacts approximately 60% of the world's streams and rivers, and the extent is expected to increase with future climate change. Additionally, aging reservoir infrastructure is driving restoration efforts, like large-scale drawdowns, that can expose benthic sediments to extended dry periods before refilling. Despite the prevalence of wet-dry cycles, how they influence nutrient transport and mobilization across different aquatic ecosystems remains poorly understood. To address this gap, this thesis presents two complementary studies exploring nutrient dynamics in Arkansas aquatic ecosystems that …

Does The Medium Make A Difference? A Quantitative Study Of Traditional Versus Social Media, Erin Elaine Bailey
Does The Medium Make A Difference? A Quantitative Study Of Traditional Versus Social Media, Erin Elaine Bailey
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
People are changing why they use social media, what used to be a way to unwind and stay in touch with old friends is now being used for something much different. This study looks into how young adults (ages 18–25) perceive and retain information from social media compared to traditional media. As social media increasingly functions as both an entertainment and news source, the distinction between it and traditional journalism continues to diminish. Using a quota sample of 300 participants, data were collected through a Qualtrics survey measuring media engagement, usage, perceived credibility, and knowledge retention. Participants were exposed to …
Religion, Crime, And The Mediating Effects Of Social Control And Self-Control, Parker Bowman
Religion, Crime, And The Mediating Effects Of Social Control And Self-Control, Parker Bowman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Past research on the relationship between religion and crime has found the two variables have a significant negative correlation. Currently, there are two main mechanisms used to explain this relationship: social control and self-control. Social control theorists argue that participation in religious organizations decreases criminal behaviors by increasing social bonds. Self-control theorists argue that religious norms and values decrease criminal behavior by increasing an individual's self-control. While both mechanisms have been well supported by research, there remains the question of which is the stronger mediator of the religion-crime relationship. This study seeks to answer this question by comparing the effects …
Does Self-Compassion Buffer Against The Potential Effects Of Perfectionism And Psychopathology On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury?, Natasha Bourgoin
Does Self-Compassion Buffer Against The Potential Effects Of Perfectionism And Psychopathology On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury?, Natasha Bourgoin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
University students with increased rates of reported perfectionism, anxiety, and depression, are vulnerable to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, not all students with psychological distress engage in NSSI, suggesting protective factors may help to mitigate this risk. The present study examined the relation between perfectionism and NSSI, via the mediating effects of anxiety and depression, and the moderating role of self-compassion. Participants were 338 university students (67% female; 87% White) who completed several self-report measures. Students with greater perfectionism reported higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms and, in turn, more NSSI engagement. Self-compassion and several self-compassionate domains attenuated connections between …
Entrepreneurial Ingenuity Of Buffalo's Brewers From 1870 To 1972, Olivia Harbol
Entrepreneurial Ingenuity Of Buffalo's Brewers From 1870 To 1972, Olivia Harbol
History Theses
This thesis looks at Buffalo’s legacy breweries from 1870 to 1972. Buffalo had a dynamic brewing past with over 30 breweries in existence on the eve of Prohibition. Buffalo’s breweries always displayed remarkable entrepreneurial ingenuity, which allowed them to adapt, change, and shift their businesses to survive. The brewers faced setbacks well before Prohibition ranging from fires to overcompetition to licensing challenges to outside brewers poaching their local markets. In covering Prohibition challenges, this thesis will only look at local brewers’ attempts to survive inside the law. Plenty of work has already been done on illegal forms of coping. In …

Prevalence Of And Hindrances To Abolitionism In Buffalo And Erie County, 1830-1860, Lauren V. Kausner
History Theses
When Americans think of abolition and abolitionists, they most likely think of Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison or Harriet Tubman. Those names are associated with New England and Rochester, New York. Many accounts of abolitionism mention Buffalo, but only in passing. As a terminus on the Underground Railroad, Buffalo was on the route to freedom in Canada and played a vital role in the nation’s journey towards eliminating slavery. This thesis endeavors to discover the depth of abolitionist tendencies in Buffalo by looking at specific individuals and events between 1830 and 1860. There were politicians and trends that most likely …
The Effect Of Hydroflow Devices On Calcium Carbonate Buildup., Holton Shults
The Effect Of Hydroflow Devices On Calcium Carbonate Buildup., Holton Shults
Master of Engineering Theses
Water containing high levels of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, is known as hard water, which is commonly found across the world due to calcium’s abundance in the earth’s crust. Hard water can lead to calcium carbonate buildup (also referred to as limescale) that reduces flow, clogs pipes, and lowers heat exchanger efficiency, all of which can drive up costs. This work evaluated two commercially available chemical-free treatment devices from HydroFLOW USA LLC, called the Pearl Plus and s38 devices. These electromagnetic devices are designed to alter calcium carbonate crystal structure, potentially reducing the amount of calcium …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
According to the 2024 National College Health Assessment, roughly one in five college students experience serious psychological distress (ACHA, 2024). High levels of psychological distress among college students are well-documented (Emmerton et al., 2024; Eisenberg et al., 2013; Bewick et al., 2010), yet less is known about the specific experiences that contribute to this distress. Grounded in multiple theoretical frameworks, this study examines students’ negative academic experiences, their perceived causes, and associated outcomes. Using an online crowdsourcing platform, current higher education students (N = 215) described their most negative academic experience (NAE) and then answered questions about their reactions and …
Simultaneous Carrier, Cargo, And Functional Tracking Of Lipid Nanoparticles, Hannia Vanessa Balcorta Muñoz
Simultaneous Carrier, Cargo, And Functional Tracking Of Lipid Nanoparticles, Hannia Vanessa Balcorta Muñoz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have become effective delivery vehicles in nanomedicine, particularly for nucleic acid-based treatments. However, a major limitation remains in the field regarding the simultaneous monitoring of the nanoparticle carrier, its encapsulated payload, and the resulting functional protein production in both in vitro and in vivo systems. Furthermore, traditional lipophilic dyes employed for labeling LNPs frequently exhibit incompatibility with tissue-clearing methods, such as CLARITY, due to signal loss following lipid removal. This research developed and evaluated a new fluorescent labeling method using CM-DiI, a dye that reacts with thiols, for multimodal tracking of LNPs. CM-DiI was included in the …

We Are Still Lipan: Identity Erasure, Settler Colonialism, Historical Memory And The Persistence Of The Non-Reservation Lipan Apache, Freddy Cabral
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation challenges the long-standing historical narrative that the Lipan Apache disappeared in the late nineteenth century. Instead, it argues that the non-reservation Lipan Apache survived through strategic adaptation, mobility, kinship networks, and cultural continuity across the United States-Mexico borderlands. By examining the Lipan experience under Spanish colonial rule, Mexican governance, the Republic of Texas, and the State of Texas, this study demonstrates that shifting political regimes consistently pursued Indigenous land, labor, and subordination through structures of settler colonialism and racial hierarchy. Using the frameworks of settler colonialism, white supremacy, genocide studies, oral history, and autoethnography, this dissertation shows how …

The "Confidential Whispers" Of Charles Francis Adams From His Teens Through Marriage At Age 22, Mitchell Jay Freedman
The "Confidential Whispers" Of Charles Francis Adams From His Teens Through Marriage At Age 22, Mitchell Jay Freedman
History ETDs
The early diaries and letters of Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886) reveal, contrary to previous scholarship, a passionate and sensitive young man engaged in multiple social activities with male and female friends and family, as well as enjoying licentious and respectful personal relationships with women. CFA was strategic with whom he was friendly or reserved, rooted in his hostility towards “hangers-on” and “hypocrites.” CFA also read widely both fiction and non-fiction with an affected sensitivity consistent with his desire for a literary-oriented life, the latter most reflected in his later curating his forebears’ papers. CFA’s early life experiences led CFA to …
Performing (For The) Guru: A Performance Studies Approach To The Study Of Cults, Todd M. Brown
Performing (For The) Guru: A Performance Studies Approach To The Study Of Cults, Todd M. Brown
Dissertations
This project approaches a long-term experience of living in a cult through a performance studies lens. Utilizing autoethnographic methods, it explores personal insights and observations from years within the inner-circle of a coercive religious environment under tyrannical leadership. A variety of systems and relationships are narrated and analyzed according to three categories: ritualization, deployability, and occupation. Ritualization explains how a body becomes imbued with the rhythms and mantras of a cultic milieu. Deployability describes how this body is put into action at the service of the leadership. Occupation, as a metaphor, illuminates how a cultic subject becomes filled with the …

Specifically, it extends the leadership literature by focusing on the cognitive resources underlying initiating structure behaviors, such as role-related clarity, that may enhance positive subordinate outcomes and mitigate negative ones. The study also incorporates an underexamined Eastern leadership style, Daoist Water-Like Leadership, and explores its associations with leader initiating structure and consideration. Guided by the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, this research assesses the effects of initiating structure and Daoist leadership on emotional exhaustion, examines the relationship between …
Intelligent Surveillance For Weapon Threat Detection: Transformer-Based Detection And Segmentation Using Thermal And Rgb Imagery, Akhila Kambhatla
Intelligent Surveillance For Weapon Threat Detection: Transformer-Based Detection And Segmentation Using Thermal And Rgb Imagery, Akhila Kambhatla
Dissertations
Proactive public-safety surveillance requires deep learning systems that can detect and segment weapons reliably under real-world conditions. This research develops and evaluates a progressive, multi-phase pipeline that moves (i) from RGB object detection to pixel-level semantic segmentation and (ii) from visible-spectrum cameras to thermal imagery to improve robustness under low-light, clutter, and occlusion. Early phases establish strong detection baselines using one-stage and two-stage detectors (YOLOv5 and Faster R-CNN) for multi-class weapon localization, followed by practical optimization through pruning and ensembling to reduce false positives and computational overhead while maintaining real-time feasibility. Building on the limitations of bounding-box localization, the methodology …

This study offers a historical account of mariachi music in Las Cruces and the development of the LCIMC, establishing a foundation for future research on mariachi music in the Mesilla Valley. Distinct from other mariachi conferences that emerged at the turn of the 21st century, the LCIMC was shaped by its location in a border city in New Mexico. Conceptualizing both physical borders and metaphorical border spaces as …
Sevoauth: Secure Voiceprint Authentication With Hash-Based Feature Transformation, Rui Zhang, Zheng Yan, Robert H. Deng
Sevoauth: Secure Voiceprint Authentication With Hash-Based Feature Transformation, Rui Zhang, Zheng Yan, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While voiceprint authentication offers convenient user authentication and access control through voice feature recognition, a critical research gap remains: existing voiceprint authentication systems fail to simultaneously achieve sound security against replay, spoofing, and adversarial attacks, preserve voice privacy leakage, and satisfy usability demand. Previous efforts have struggled to balance these issues comprehensively. To bridge this gap, we present SeVoAuth, a cloud-based Voiceprint Authentication as a Service (VAaaS) system designed to provide privacy preservation, robust security, and enhanced usability. SeVoAuth stores a synthesized voiceprint of a user in the cloud during user registration, thereby safeguarding the privacy of the real voiceprint …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Long-Term History-Aware Medical Dialogue, Hebin Hu, Renke Dai, Ah-Hwee Tan, Yilin Kang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
An effective healthcare agent must be able to recall and reason over a patient’s longitudinal medical history. However, the absence of datasets with realistic long-term dialogue timelines limits systematic evaluation. Real clinical text is constrained by privacy and ethics, while existing benchmarks focus on isolated interactions, failing to capture cross-session reasoning. We introduce a framework for synthesizing high-quality, long-term medical dialogues with LLMs. Our approach entails a knowledge-guided decomposition into three stages: constructing synthetic patient profiles with diverse disease and complication trajectories, generating multiturn dialogues per encounter, and integrating them into a coherent longitudinal history dataset, MediLongChat. We establish three …

Selective Concolic Testing, Guofeng Zhang, Zhenbang Chen, Ziqi Shuai, Jun Sun, Weijiang Hong, Yufeng Zhang, Ji Wang, Yang Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The principled combination of symbolic execution and random testing lacks a formal foundation, especially in deciding which inputs to symbolize. We propose selective concolic testing, a cost-aware framework that formulates this choice as an optimized policy problem of a MDP (Markov Decision Process). We model program exploration over a finite control-flow graph, where MDP states represent covered statements, actions partition path constraints into symbolic and random fragments, rewards reflect coverage gain, and costs account for SMT solving effort and sampling inefficiency. Our framework yields the first formal characterization of selective symbolization as policy synthesis in a probabilistic system. We prove …
