Sumset Lower Bounds In Abelian Groups, Van T. Huynh May 2026

Sumset Lower Bounds In Abelian Groups, Van T. Huynh

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates sumset lower bounds across discrete and continuous settings. We begin with general inequalities in torsion-free abelian groups and then specialize to the integers modulo prime p, where we present the Cauchy–Davenport Theorem, which establishes the bound ∣A+B∣≥min(p,∣A∣+∣B∣−1). The equality case is further examined via Vosper's Theorem, which characterizes subsets attaining this bound as arithmetic progressions under suitable conditions. The continuous analogue in Euclidean spaces is then considered, where cardinality is replaced by Lebesgue measure. In this setting, the Brunn–Minkowski Inequality provides a sharp lower bound for the Lebesgue measure of A+B and serves as a geometric counterpart …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Bike-Share Use In A Small City: A Case Study Of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Brianna L. Buenger May 2026

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Bike-Share Use In A Small City: A Case Study Of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Brianna L. Buenger

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Many small and mid-sized cities in the United States face ongoing transportation challenges due to limited public transit options. This can prevent residents from being able to reach essential destinations. While bikeshare systems have been widely studied in large metropolitan areas, there is limited understanding of how usage patterns vary across space, time, and trip characteristics in small-city contexts. This study addresses this gap by examining spatial and temporal patterns of bikeshare use in a small U.S. city through a case study of the Fort Smith, Arkansas, SMILIES bikeshare program. Using approximately 10,000 trips over three years, the analysis examines …

Of The Land And Sea: A Critical Ecocultural Analysis Of Disney's Frozen And Moana, Maggie A. Andress

Communication Undergraduate Honors Theses

Within the modern era of performative inclusivity and widespread greenwashing, it is critical to examine popular media through an ecocultural lens to determine if said media is being handled responsibly as a social practice and if a discursive atmosphere is being created. This paper takes an ecocultural critical analysis of Disney’s worlds of Frozen and Moana, inspecting their treatment of the human, treatment of the more-than-human, and human/more-than-human relationships. This study finds that although both franchises have been broadly praised for cultural representation of Indigenous people groups, Disney’s failure to effectively acknowledge the intrinsic relationship between humankind and the …

Design, Simulation, And Experimentation Of A Box Barge Model Under Asymmetrical Conditions, Kylie Sink May 2026

Design, Simulation, And Experimentation Of A Box Barge Model Under Asymmetrical Conditions, Kylie Sink

Senior Honors Theses

This study investigates the ability of numerical simulations to predict vessel motion responses under asymmetrical loading conditions. A raked barge model was designed, constructed, and tested in a towing tank to evaluate the response amplitude operators (RAOs) for heave, roll, and pitch under various wave conditions. The model included six internal compartments that allowed different flooding scenarios to be simulated in order to create asymmetric loading conditions. Experimental testing was conducted under head seas (0 degrees) and beam seas (90 degrees) with multiple wave periods.

A numerical model of the vessel was developed using GHS to generate predicted RAOs for …

Experimentation To Study Ship Motions Under Asymmetrical Conditions, Elise Simon May 2026

Experimentation To Study Ship Motions Under Asymmetrical Conditions, Elise Simon

Senior Honors Theses

The pioneers of ship motion analysis often used the symmetry assumption to reduce computation time and complexity. For the symmetry assumption to be valid, a ship must be upright with no heel angle, which is rarely the case. An increased interest in damaged ships has motivated further analysis of ship motions in the asymmetric condition; however, only a limited number of physical experiments have been conducted in towing tanks. This paper presents an experiment carried out to analyze vessel motions in the asymmetric condition for a box barge model. The method includes model construction, experiment setup, the test matrix, and …

Temporality Waters: Connecting People To The Brays Bayou Through Memory, Culture, And Identity Experiences In Houston, Texas, Khulda Aamir Obaid

Landscape Architecture Theses

Communities across Texas face increasing hydrological pressures from natural climate variability, changing precipitation patterns, and rapid urban growth. Although directly attributing extreme precipitation events to anthropogenic climate change is complicated by internal variability and observational limitations (de Vries et al., 2023; Griffin et al., 2024; IPCC, 2021; National Academies, 2016), cities such as Houston are preparing for more frequent and intense storms. Historical floods—including Tropical Storm Allison, the Memorial Day and Tax Day floods, and Hurricane Harvey—have exposed the limits of Houston’s predominantly hard-infrastructure flood management. The Brays Bayou watershed, particularly the Meyerland neighborhood, shows heightened vulnerability, where impervious surfaces, …

Grit, Nikita Nenashev May 2026

Grit, Nikita Nenashev

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Grit is the pursuit of intuition and sustained attention in the search for expression. My work aims to create a sense of both familiarity and mystery by operating between the framework of utility and abstraction. I investigate the liminal space between what is known and unknown, creating surfaces and forms that challenge our perceptions of beauty.

Working gesturally and swiftly invites the clay to reveal indicators of its character, leaving evidence of the forces involved in the creation of each form. Textured and scorched surfaces, produced through the firing process, reflect the transformation of malleable material into a state of …

Application Of Path Analysis To Determine The Impact Of Age And Sex On The Neural Circuits That Promote Nicotine Withdrawal Severity, Veronika Espinoza

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The rising prevalence of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use presents a major public health concern, particularly in adolescent females who are most susceptible to nicotine use and its long-term negative health consequences. The goal of this dissertation was to utilize preclinical rodent models to understand how group differences in age and sex influence neural activation patterns in brain circuits believed to promote nicotine withdrawal. Prior pre-clinical work, conducted largely in male rodents, has established that there are two major brain pathways that modulate the behavioral effects of nicotine withdrawal. These include the mesolimbic and medial habenula-interpeduncular nucleus (MHb-IPN) pathways. To assess …

Provenance Analysis Of Advanced Persistent Threats In Operational Technology Environments, Laura Aminta Guevara May 2026

Provenance Analysis Of Advanced Persistent Threats In Operational Technology Environments, Laura Aminta Guevara

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Live vulnerability testing and penetration assessments of critical infrastructure are costly, complex operationally and, in many cases, unsafe to conduct directly against live systems, whether these are commissioned in-house and through third-party providers. For Operational Technology environments specifically, these constraints are further aggravated by the limited vendor support and inconsistent security patching available that characterize many industrial communication protocols. This significantly restricts the scope and feasibility of conventional penetration testing. At the same time, the increasing overlapping of OT systems with enterprise networks and the internet has expanded the attack surface of ICS infrastructure, making more pressing the need for …

The Mouse At The Border: Magic, Money, And Manufactured Identity, Ricardo Manuel Hinojosa May 2026

The Mouse At The Border: Magic, Money, And Manufactured Identity, Ricardo Manuel Hinojosa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the methods by which The Walt Disney Company constructs and negotiates representations of Latine, gender, and queer identities within contemporary animation, with a particular emphasis on Coco (2017), Encanto (2021), and Wish (2023). Through a critical and intersectional lens, this research posits that Disney strikes a balance between cultural specificity and global market appeal, often leading to representations that are visually elaborate yet narratively limited. Both Coco and Encanto showcase a significant engagement with cultural traditions and themes such as memory and generational trauma; however, they ultimately fall short of thoroughly addressing systemic issues like colonialism and …

Numerical Methods For Modeling Darcy-Forchheimer Flow In Heterogeneous Porous Media, Nate Mcnair May 2026

Numerical Methods For Modeling Darcy-Forchheimer Flow In Heterogeneous Porous Media, Nate Mcnair

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Classic approaches to modeling fluid flow in porous media rely on Darcy's Law, which assumes a linear relationship between volumetric flow rate and the pressure gradient. However, in recent years, applications such as enhanced geothermal systems have highlighted the need to model nonlinear flow behavior, since experimental and observational data show that, once flow velocity exceeds a certain threshold, the relationship between velocity and macroscopic pressure gradient becomes nonlinear. This requires alternative models that more accurately capture the physical behavior of these systems. The Darcy-Forchheimer model provides one such alternative by introducing a nonlinear velocity-pressure relationship. However, this nonlinearity creates additional …

Log Anomaly Detection With Parameter-Efficient Tiny Language Models: From Centralized Fine-Tuning To Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning, Isaiah Thompson Thompson Ocansey

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

System logs are a primary source of information for identifying faults, misconfigurations, and security incidents in computing infrastructure. As these logs grow in volume and complexity, manual inspection becomes impractical, and automated detection methods are needed. This thesis investigates how compact language models can be applied to the task of log anomaly detection under two operational conditions: when log data is centralized and when it is located at different data sites.

In the first part, we propose LogTinyLLM, which applies parameter-efficient fine-tuning through Low-Rank Adaptation and adapter-based techniques to adapt tiny language models for identifying contextual anomalies in log sequences. …

An Ordinal Categorical Data Analysis Using The Stereotype Model Within A Bayesian Framework With A Logistic-Normal Prior, Nathaniel A. Sakyi May 2026

An Ordinal Categorical Data Analysis Using The Stereotype Model Within A Bayesian Framework With A Logistic-Normal Prior, Nathaniel A. Sakyi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Ordinal categorical data are pervasive in applied research, yet their analysis is often compromised by modeling strategies that implicitly assume equidistant category spacing or impose restrictive structural constraints. Metric regression models and latent-variable threshold approaches routinely misrepresent ordinal information, leading to biased inference, distorted uncertainty quantification, and loss of structural insight. This paper develops a Bayesian framework for ordinal regression that explicitly accommodates \textbf{unequal spacing among ordered response categories} while preserving ordinal structure and interpretability.

The proposed approach builds on the stereotype regression model, which embeds ordinal categories into a latent one-dimensional continuum through estimable score parameters. While the stereotype …

Daughters Of The Road, Kristen Marie Sche May 2026

Daughters Of The Road, Kristen Marie Sche

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The beloved Road Novel has long been a tale submerged in the coming-of-age story following men as they search for themselves along the American highways. The genre can vary from journeys of families seeking refuge or tackling a task to men seeking answers to something missing in their lives. However eclectic the genre, it lacks in the pilgrimage of girls finding what the road can bring to them in a literary fictional context. This thesis provides a novel written in the popular genre while exploring themes of sisterhood, grief, and inclusion through the context of a hybrid form of narration …

Effective Prediction Of Martensite Start Temperature By Hybrid Machine Learning And Ethical A.I. In Materials Science, Agniprava Banerjee

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The martensite start temperature Ms governs heat treatment design and mechanical property development in martensitic steel alloys. Accurate prediction of Ms from chemical composition alone would accelerate alloy development, yet existing empirical equations lack accuracy for multi-component steels and purely data-driven models provide no physically principled behavior outside their training domain. This dissertation develops a hybrid machine learning-physics framework for predicting Ms in steel alloys from composition. The MAP Cambridge dataset (1,020 cleaned records, 15 alloying elements) is processed through a five-stage cleaning pipeline and a 21-feature physics augmented representation, including the Ghosh-Olson Ms thermodynamic prediction as an explicit feature. …

Hvsr-Based Resonance Analysis And Fault Zone Characterization In The El Paso Region, Alexandro Dominguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) analysis offers an efficient method for characterizing near-surface structure, resolving sediment thickness, and identifying fault-controlled basin geometry in regions with strong impedance contrasts. This study applies HVSR techniques to continuous ambient-noise recordings collected across the El Paso region, a tectonically active segment of the southern Rio Grande Rift where accurate subsurface mapping is essential for seismic hazard assessment. Ambient-noise windows were processed, spectrally smoothed, and stacked to obtain stable HVSR curves, from which fundamental resonance frequencies and corresponding sediment-thickness estimates were derived. Spatial patterns in these resonance frequencies reveal pronounced basin asymmetry, abrupt lateral …

Impaired Tunability Of Brain State And Motor Dysfunction In A Mouse Model Of Rett Syndrome, Victoria Kindler Norman May 2026

Impaired Tunability Of Brain State And Motor Dysfunction In A Mouse Model Of Rett Syndrome, Victoria Kindler Norman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurological disorder, caused by disrupted function of the MECP2 gene, resulting in impaired cognitive and motor functions. Previous studies suggest that although MECP2 has important functions throughout the body, the etiological origins of RTT-related dysfunction should be sought within the brain. However, it remains a mystery how neural population dynamics are altered in the RTT brain and how these alterations relate to motor dysfunction. Previous studies using an RTT mouse model point to abnormal correlations among firing rates of neurons. Here we hypothesize that such disrupted neural activity correlation could be caused by abnormal …
