Deconstructing Disability In Malawi: A Multi-Perspective Qualitative Study On Understandings, Policy Development, And Policy Implementation, Johanna Lee Jul 2024

Deconstructing Disability In Malawi: A Multi-Perspective Qualitative Study On Understandings, Policy Development, And Policy Implementation, Johanna Lee

Capstone Collection

Disability models serve as frameworks to conceptualize understandings of disabilities, influencing the creation of policies and programs. The United Nations, through the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), has established international standards influenced by disability models from the Global North. Despite Malawi’s efforts to adopt the CRPD through numerous measures, people with disabilities still face challenges in accessing healthcare. The effectiveness of current policies in the health sector remains unclear. Therefore, it is crucial to consider local perspectives on disabilities, as well as differences in culture and livelihoods. This research employs thematic analysis to assess the perceptions …

Exploring Prescribing Practitioners’ Experiences And Perceptions Associated With Opioid Clinical Practice Guidelines Adherence To Treat Older Adults For Chronic Pain In Primary Care Practice Settings In The United States, Dara D. Skinner

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Chronic pain is a common complaint in older adults,’ and they often seek treatment from their primary care provider who may prescribe opioids to treat their chronic pain. Treating and managing an older adult chronic pain can be complex due to several factors such as the patient’s co-morbidities (other medical conditions), impaired cognition, and advanced age. Opioids have been used since the 1890s for treatment of pain (acute and chronic). Opioid use can cause fractures, falls, kidney failure, addiction, respiratory depression, and overdose in older adults. According to Tong et al. (2016) primary care providers were responsible for writing …

Additionally, I offer a teaching unit on characterization designed for a dual enrollment writing class that aims to teach grammar in the context of writing.

Searching For Justice: Moving Towards A Trans Inclusive Model Of Access To Justice In Canada, Evan Vipond, Pierre Cloutier De Repentigny Jul 2024

Searching For Justice: Moving Towards A Trans Inclusive Model Of Access To Justice In Canada, Evan Vipond, Pierre Cloutier De Repentigny

Dalhousie Law Journal

Access to justice literature has paid little attention to the role of gender identity and gender expression as barriers to justice that must be addressed. As a marginalized and disenfranchised population, trans and gender nonconforming people experience specific barriers to justice that cisgender people typically do not. This paper seeks to address the gap in access to justice literature by attending to specific barriers to justice that trans people face in Canada. These barriers include socioeconomic inequalities; exclusion from the legal system; sex/gender certification and bigenderism within the legal system; and transphobia and cissexism within the legal system. Calling for …

Informing The Debate On Lowering The Criminal Rate Of Interest, Gail Henderson, Katlin Abrahamson Jul 2024

Informing The Debate On Lowering The Criminal Rate Of Interest, Gail Henderson, Katlin Abrahamson

Dalhousie Law Journal

Canada has two markets for consumer credit. Consumers with middle to high incomes can draw on ‘mainstream’ forms of credit at reasonable interest rates, such as lines of credit and credit cards issued by chartered banks. Consumers living on low to moderate incomes, who also may have a poor credit score or no credit history, often find themselves pushed to high-cost credit products, such as instalment loans issued by alternative financial services providers. The effective annual interest rate on instalment loans can run up to the maximum permitted under section 347 of the Criminal Code. Anything above this constitutes a …

Due to the overwhelming characteristics of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its adoption in approximately every aspect of our lives, the concept of individual devices’ privacy has gained prominent attention from both customers, i.e., people, and industries as wearable devices collect sensitive information about patients (both admitted and outdoor) in smart healthcare infrastructures. In addition to privacy, outliers or noise are among the crucial issues, which are directly correlated with IoT infrastructures, as most member devices are resource-limited and could generate or transmit false data that is required to be refined before processing, i.e., transmitting. Therefore, the development of …

Guess Who?: First-Time In-Court Identifications And Due Process, Natalie Beers Jul 2024

Guess Who?: First-Time In-Court Identifications And Due Process, Natalie Beers

Washington and Lee Law Review

Juries believe eyewitnesses. When an identifying eyewitness takes the stand and points to a defendant in a courtroom, the jury is more likely to render a guilty verdict. But how reliable is that identification? What if the eyewitness is on the stand identifying a perpetrator for the first time, in the court room, rather than at the police station with a lineup or photo array? How do those suggestive circumstances implicate a criminal defendant’s due process rights?

First-time in-court identifications are inherently suggestive. While the Supreme Court has acknowledged the suggestive nature of similar identifications, it did not directly address …

The Brain Is In Your Court: Evaluating Intellectual Property Infringement Audience Through The Lens Of Neuroscience, Madyson Kent Jul 2024

The Brain Is In Your Court: Evaluating Intellectual Property Infringement Audience Through The Lens Of Neuroscience, Madyson Kent

Washington and Lee Law Review

To protect creations of the mind, the law needs to understand the mind. Thankfully, the rapidly emerging field of neuroscience provides an invaluable glimpse into the inner workings of the human brain. Now that scientific instruments provide a window into the living brain, it is time to reexamine the way intellectual property law decides the outcomes of infringement lawsuits.

Critically examining neuroscience in the context of the law helps to answer the most fundamental question in an intellectual property lawsuit: Was there infringement? A judicial hesitancy to understand the thought processes of artists and creators results in relying on the …

Role Of Partial Requirement Tariffs And Standby Charges In Microgrid Adoption In Ohio, Matthew R. Fulton, Andrew R. Thomas Jul 2024

Role Of Partial Requirement Tariffs And Standby Charges In Microgrid Adoption In Ohio, Matthew R. Fulton, Andrew R. Thomas

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Utility partial load tariffs can be used to enable microgrids to be connected to distributions systems. While partial load tariffs can be avoided by connecting the microgrid directly to the transmission grid, this strategy is likely to be more effective for larger microgrids (e.g. 10 MW). But partial load tariffs – if suitably designed -- can be very useful to enabling smaller microgrid development.

With a continuously growing demand for power, driven by the need to reduce our environmental footprint, this research provides an examination of the potential of energy harvesting with smart materials technology and its practical applications. The energy harvesting system considered here works on generating energy through vibrations of a piezoelectric material beam which will undergo sustained vibrations due to flow of air over its surface. It is assumed that sustained limit cycle oscillations of this system will occur at the flutter velocity. This research creates an optimization framework to obtain the best values of parameters that will result in the …

Digital Nucleic Acid Memory: Up-Scaling Ssdna Synthesis Of Novel P11453.1 Scaffold For Dna Origami, Jeremy Naftzger, Audrey Thompson, Benjamin Balzer, Luke Woodbury, Eric J. Hayden Jul 2024

Digital Nucleic Acid Memory: Up-Scaling Ssdna Synthesis Of Novel P11453.1 Scaffold For Dna Origami, Jeremy Naftzger, Audrey Thompson, Benjamin Balzer, Luke Woodbury, Eric J. Hayden

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

The limitations of conventional memory materials, both in physical and economic aspects, necessitate the development of novel memory materials and methods. Digital Nucleic Acid Memory (dNAM) is one such memory method, which leverages DNA’s high information density, stability, and energy efficiency for non-volatile long-term memory applications, such as archival storage. dNAM uses DNA origami to form an information matrix where fluorescent DNA strands can bind to represent Binary 1’s and 0’s. This process is dependent on the size of the DNA Origami, therefore being dependent on the size of the ssDNA scaffold. The custom novel ssDNA scaffold P11453.1 is synthesized …

The Relationship Between Changing Land Cover And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Diversity In Choccolocco Creek, Northeast Alabama, Kindall Brown Jul 2024

The Relationship Between Changing Land Cover And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Diversity In Choccolocco Creek, Northeast Alabama, Kindall Brown

Theses

Land cover changes, driven by urbanization, agriculture, and deforestation, significantly affect the physical and chemical characteristics of water bodies at both the watershed and riparian levels. At the larger spatial scale, a stream’s surrounding watershed facilitates lateral inputs into the stream that are essential for biodiversity support, hydrological stability, and water quality. When a stream becomes disconnected from the lateral inputs due to urban or agricultural development, the morphology of the stream is significantly altered. On a smaller spatial scale, the riparian zone can act as a buffer to pollutants. The vegetation surrounding the stream bank promotes stability to the …

Dual Light Emission Of Cssni3-Based Powders Synthesized Via A Mechanochemical Process, Xuan Huang, Xiaobing Tang, Xiyu Wen, Yuebin Charles Lu, Fuqian Yang

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Lead toxicity has hindered the wide applications of lead halide perovskites in optoelec- tronics and bioimaging. A significant amount of effort has been made to synthesize lead-free halide perovskites as alternatives to lead halide perovskites. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of synthesizing CsSnI3-based powders mechanochemically with dual light emissions under ambi- ent conditions from CsI and SnI2 powders. The formed CsSnI3-based powders are divided into CsSnI3-dominated powders and CsSnI3-contained powders. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light of 365 nm in wavelength, the CsSnI3-dominated powders emit green light with a wavelength centered at 540 nm, and the CsSnI3-contained powders …

Pressure Dependence Of The Rate Coefficient Of Ozone Using Master Equation Simulations Of Recombination Kinetics, Adil Yermek Jul 2024

Pressure Dependence Of The Rate Coefficient Of Ozone Using Master Equation Simulations Of Recombination Kinetics, Adil Yermek

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The ozone layer in Earth’s atmosphere is distinctive and crucial for the evolution of life. Investigating the process of ozone formation aids in comprehending the evolution of our planet’s atmosphere. The reaction that forms ozone is O + O2 → O3. One can describe ozone forming reaction approximately using Lindeman mechanism, which is very handy. However, its limitation arises from assuming a steady-state approximation, which neglects transient dynamics and complexities that could impact reaction kinetics under non-equilibrium conditions. For this reason, Master Equation simulations can be seen as an enhancement or extension of the Lindemann mechanism, providing a thorough understanding …

Design And Verification Of A Planar, Programmable, Compliant Hand For Use In General Open-Loop Constrained Manipulation, Jacob Frye Jul 2024

Design And Verification Of A Planar, Programmable, Compliant Hand For Use In General Open-Loop Constrained Manipulation, Jacob Frye

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Conventional robots are adept at performing tasks where the desired absolute position of the robot's end effector is well defined. However, these robots will struggle with tasks in which the desired position is poorly defined, subject to variation, or determined by contact with a constraint with positional uncertainty. This problem can be solved by introducing compliance to the system, either active or passive. Active compliance uses force feedback to make corrective motions, but is limited in speed and experiences higher contact forces than passive systems. Passively compliant systems are capable of realizing the necessary compliance for a given task but …

Four mass flow rates ranging from 5–20 g/s with subcooled inlet conditions are investigated in a rectangular channel with single-sided heating. Three regions of interest along the heated channel are investigated for instantaneous PIV analysis. The PIV system captures detailed velocity profiles, illustrating the impact of varying mass flow rates and heat flux levels …

Theoretical And Experimental Evaluation Of The Electronic Relaxation Mechanisms Of 2-Pyrimidinone: The Primary Uva Absorbing Moiety Of The Dna And Rna (6–4) Photolesion, Sean J. Hoehn, Sarah E. Krul, Carlos E. Crespo-Hernández Jul 2024

Crespo-Hernández

Faculty Scholarship

The (6–4) photolesion is a key photodamage that occurs when two adjacent pyrimidine bases in a DNA strand bond together. To better understand how the absorption of UVB and UVA radiation by the 2-pyrimidinone moiety in a (6–4) lesion can damage DNA, it is important to study the electronic deactivation mechanism of its 2-pyrimidinone chromophore. This study employs theoretical (MS-CASPT2/cc-pVDZ level) and experimental (steady state and femtosecond broadband spectroscopic) methods to elucidate the photochemical relaxation mechanisms of 2-(1H)-pyrimidinone and 1-methyl-2-(1H)-pyrimidinone in aqueous solution (pH 7.4). In short, excitation at 320 nm leads to the population of the S11(ππ*) …
