The Importance Of Ley Farming For Improving The Forage Basis Of Tropical Africa, V A. Oyenuga Jul 2026

The Importance Of Ley Farming For Improving The Forage Basis Of Tropical Africa, V A. Oyenuga

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The concept and practice of including shortduration pasture mixtures or leys in agricultural rotations, particularly for intensive livestock production, are of recent development in tropical Africa. Although mixed farming -the keeping of animals for farm work, producing farmyard manure for the maintenance of soil fertility, and rearing of dairy cows to produce milk for household use - was first introduced as an organized system of settled farming in Nigeria in 1922, intensive animal husbandry, based on intensively maintained pasture mixtures, be it on a small or large scale, is still in the process of widespread development in many parts of …

The Grassland Of Africa: Classification, Production Evolution And Development Outlook, H N. Le Houerou Jul 2026

The Grassland Of Africa: Classification, Production Evolution And Development Outlook, H N. Le Houerou

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grasslands in the broader meaning, i.e. grazing lands, occupy huge areas in Africa, probably in the vicinity of 10 million km2 (1000 million hectares), of which some 800 million hectares of permanent pastures and 200 million hectares of grazed woodland and open forest. There are also some 210 million hectares of crops and fallows most of which are grazed for part of the annual cycle. These African grasslands thus represent 7.5 % of the world's total land surface and 1/3 of its total acreage of grassland; they also correspond to 33 % of the surface of the continent, the remainder …

Pasture Possibilities In The Tropics, Fernando Perez Infante Jul 2026

Pasture Possibilities In The Tropics, Fernando Perez Infante

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Frnm an academic viewpoint, only biological aspects of pasture possibilities in the Tropics are considered in this paper. In spite of being an important . part of these possibilities, no mention would be made of a fundamental aspect, i.e. the one related to the people living in the Tropics and the ways in which they could make use of the potentials offered by their pastures to improve their living conditions. Thus when we come to consider "possibilities", it is not only a question of solving technical problems, but there are also economic and cultural factors which must be kept in …

Management Of Arid Pastures, Cyrus M. Mckell, Don D. Dwyer Jul 2026

Management Of Arid Pastures, Cyrus M. Mckell, Don D. Dwyer

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Arid pasture, natural grazing land, or rangeland are synonymous terms used to describe the extensive areas of open, non-cultivated arid lands over which domestic livestock and wildlife roam in search of feed. These lands are characteristically low in productivity and if managed, the level of management is extensive and based on ecological principles. The term rangeland originated in the United States of America and is gradually gaining usage in other countries to differentiate between intensively managed pastures of humid and sub-humid regions, and the open steppes, deserts, shrublands and dry non-commercial forested lands which, in addition to grazing, provide nonconsumptive …

New Objectives And Modern Methods Of Forage Grass Breeding In The German Democratic Republic, Heinrich Baudis Jul 2026

New Objectives And Modern Methods Of Forage Grass Breeding In The German Democratic Republic, Heinrich Baudis

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The objectives of forage grass breeding in the GDR are derived from the social development processes which, in socialist agriculture, find their expression in further intensification, concentration and spezialization of plant and animal production. New aspects which have been recognized only recently, for example, positive response to intensification measures, suitability for industrialized production methods, increased yield stability and improved quality in addition to a higher yielding potential, have the decisive say in the breeding targets. The most important traits and properties from the breeder's point of view are dealt with in detail. Explanations on practical breeding work and on some …

Possibilities Of Dry Matter Production From Forage Plants Under Different Climatic Conditions, Th Alberda Jul 2026

Possibilities Of Dry Matter Production From Forage Plants Under Different Climatic Conditions, Th Alberda

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

On the basis of the gross photosynthesis of closed green grass swards the net potential dry herbage production of permanent pastures is calculated for the climatic and soil conditions for the so-called broad soil regions and summarized per continent. The values thus obtained form the upper level of dry herbage production to be reached on the prevailing permanent pasture area. Subsequently the minimum level of dry herbage production is calculated, based on data on the production of marketed secondary products as meat and milk. Since not all these secondary products are marketed and since not all the herbage produced is …

Review Of 50 Years Grassland Farming And Trends Of Development In The Further Intensification Of Forage Production In The German Democratic Republic, Eberhard Wojahn

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

This our XIII International Grassland Congress is being held at the invitation of the Government of the German Democratic Republic following the decision of the XII International Grassland Congress in Moscow in 1974 that this Congress shall be held as a jubilee event here in Leipzig. It is the Jubilee Congress reminding us of the First International Grassland Congress which was held 50 years ago, during the last days of May, 1927, in this time-honoured University town and centre of world trade. Because of that jubilee character this XIII International Grassland Congress is of very special importance.

Influence Of Feeding On Health And Productivity Of Ruminants, Alexander Sommer Jul 2026

Influence Of Feeding On Health And Productivity Of Ruminants, Alexander Sommer

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

As to the utilization of plant matter not suited for direct consumption by man, ruminants are of outstanding importance. This fact is related with the function of their specific stomach system. The paper discusses the microbial protein synthesis from NPN compounds. When 50 per cent of digestible crude protein required by fattening cattle were replaced, daily live weight gains of 997 g were reached; beef quality was not affected. Similarly favourable results were obtained with dairy cows when replacing by NPN compounds 50 to 100 per cent of extracted meals. Further on, the problem of crude-fibre digestion in connection with …

The African Journal of Information Systems

This study conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to investigate the mental health challenges associated with increasing social media (SM) usage. The review compares these effects across youth and adult age groups and explores how mental health issues related to SM use have evolved before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a comprehensive search of databases including ProQuest, Scopus, JSTOR, and Google Scholar, 43 relevant articles were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that social media usage exacerbates mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, fear of missing out (FOMO), social and financial comparisons. The COVID-19 pandemic notably …

Technical Disclosure: The Urban Biosphere Ziggurat (Ubz), Affordable Housing And Urban Planning, Christopher L. Eckes Jul 2026

Technical Disclosure: The Urban Biosphere Ziggurat (Ubz), Affordable Housing And Urban Planning, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

Current high-density urban housing models in the United States routinely fail because they optimize strictly for initial cost-per-square-foot, resulting in double-loaded corridor containment layouts that restrict natural light, induce community stagnation, and induce severe benefit "cliff effects" on upwardly mobile residents. The Urban Biosphere Ziggurat (UBZ) framework resolves this systemic crisis by decoupling high-tech, factory-precise structural engineering from regional, artistic architectural cladding. This disclosure outlines a scalable, non-speculative structural chassis integrated into a Community Land Trust (CLT) and Limited-Equity Housing Cooperative (LEHC) [1.5] governance ecosystem, permanently divesting real estate from predatory international speculation. A Differential Equation–Based Epidemiological Model Of Post-Operative Chronic Pain In Scoliosis Patients With Data-Driven Analysis, Paige Zhu, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer Jul 2026

A Differential Equation–Based Epidemiological Model Of Post-Operative Chronic Pain In Scoliosis Patients With Data-Driven Analysis, Paige Zhu, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer

CODEE Journal

Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) is a common and often overlooked complication following surgical correction of idiopathic scoliosis, impacting long-term patient wellbeing despite improvements in surgical outcomes. This project introduces a novel epidemiological framework to model the progression of CPSP using a compartmental structure. By applying a coupled system of nonlinear differential equations, we simulate pain trajectories over time and assess the effectiveness of surgical interventions. The model is implemented for a single-cohort population and extended to a two-cohort design to compare outcomes between Posterior Spinal Fusion (PSIF) and Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) procedures. Further stratification by patient age enables us …

Optimal Power Flow Solving And Feasibility Restoration Method For Distribution Networks Based On Deep Learning, Ji Chen, Huihuang Cai, Weidong Zhong, Minghua Chu, Huan Long, Ziqing Shi

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

As the core of optimal dispatching decision-making for distribution networks, optimal power flow (OPF) urgently requires fast calculation methods under large-scale grid frameworks. A deep learning-based OPF solving method oriented toward feasibility restoration was proposed. First, an OPF solving architecture based on state-control variable decomposition was constructed, and an OPF state variable solving model was built based on a deep neural network. Second, to address the problem that OPF results based on deep neural networks fail to satisfy control variable constraints, samples with inequality constraint violations were screened to construct a correction sample set; considering actual physical constraints and supply-demand …

Multi-Dimensional Feature Fusion Identification Of Tree-Line Grounding Faults, Lei Han, Chun Chen Jul 2026

Multi-Dimensional Feature Fusion Identification Of Tree-Line Grounding Faults, Lei Han, Chun Chen

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

High-resistance grounding faults induced by tree-line contact are characterized by weak signal features and difficult fault localization, and are one of the significant hidden risks in power grid operations. Existing studies mostly focus on the feature extraction, monitoring, and early warning of faults, but there are still deficiencies in the precise identification and classification of tree-line grounding faults. To address this issue, a tree-line grounding fault identification method combining Bayesian optimization-extreme gradient boosting (Bayes-XGBoost) was proposed. First, a tree-line grounding fault simulation model was established to simulate the zero-sequence current characteristics of different tree species under high-resistance grounding faults, and …

Design Method For End Shape Of Explosion-Proof High-Voltage Cable Joints Based On Virtual Objective Optimization, Xiang Gao, Xin Yang, Honghua Hu, Yafei Huang, Wei Qiu, Yangning Chen, Rui Qin

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

For the explosion-proof weak points at the end of the intermediate joint of high-voltage cables, an optimization design method for the end of the explosion-proof copper shell was proposed. By using a finite element calculation method coupling the temperature field, displacement field, and flow field, the stress concentration factor K at the copper shell end of the joint under different deflection angles α was calculated; then, under the deflection angle with the minimum stress concentration factor, a circularization and copper shell thickness coordination design was conducted. Orthogonal experimental design is conducted on the two arc curvature radii and the thickness …

Small retail businesses in the Southern United States continue to experience costly millennial employee turnover, threatening workforce stability and long-term business sustainability. This issue is important to small Southern retail business owners because turnover increases staffing costs, disrupts customer service, and weakens organizational performance. The purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore strategies some small Southern U.S. retail business owners use to improve millennial employee retention. The job demands–resources model grounded the research project. Participants were six owner-operators in Virginia, Alabama, and Tennessee with at least 5 years of leadership experience managing millennial employees. Data were collected through …

Black Faith-Based Organization Leaders And Their Role In Mental Health, Alyssa Te'rese Green Jul 2026

Black Faith-Based Organization Leaders And Their Role In Mental Health, Alyssa Te'rese Green

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Blacks age 65+ have more mental health issues than others but underutilize mental health services because of stigma. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to identify what leaders in Black faith-based organizations believe their role is in supporting their congregants in accessing/attaining mental health services and how they provide support to their elderly congregants who may not have social support that could identify mental health issues. The health belief model and theory of planned behavior were used to explore mental health knowledge and support for the elderly congregants of faith-based organizations. Semistructured interview data from 10 Black religious …

Telling On Themselves: A Qualitative Study On The Linguistic Markers Of Deception In High-Stakes Speech, James Butcher Jul 2026

Telling On Themselves: A Qualitative Study On The Linguistic Markers Of Deception In High-Stakes Speech, James Butcher

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Deception detection in forensic and legal settings has historically relied on behavioral and nonverbal cues. Extensive research has demonstrated that these indicators are unreliable and prone to bias. This reliance has a significant impact on investigations, legal outcomes, and public trust. Although linguistic research has identified individual markers of deceptive speech, limited attention has been given to how multiple linguistic cues interact in real-world, high-stakes contexts. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how pronoun shifts, avoidance language, and equivocation cluster together during high-stakes deceptive speech. Truth-default theory (TDT) served as the theoretical foundation, and critical discourse analysis …

Successful Management Of A Large Pediatric Traumatic Pneumothorax Using A Thoracic Vent Device After Blunt Chest Injury: A Case Report, Jayanjali Bodavula, Melika Babadi, Morgan W. Stewart, Brett Dunbar

Student Publications

Traumatic pneumothorax is a common complication of blunt thoracic trauma and is traditionally managed with tube thoracostomy, particularly in larger or symptomatic cases requiring pleural decompression. Thoracic vent devices, such as the UreSil Thora-Vent, represent a less invasive pleural drainage option for the management of spontaneous or iatrogenic pneumothorax. However, literature regarding their use in traumatic pneumothorax, particularly in pediatric patients, remains limited. We present a case of a 13-year-old girl who developed a large left-sided traumatic pneumothorax after blunt thoracic trauma sustained during a softball collision. Computed tomography demonstrated a large left-sided pneumothorax and a nondisplaced left sixth rib …

Transmembrane protein 63B gene (TMEM63B) encodes a mechanosensitive ion channel expressed in alveolar type II epithelial cells, where it mediates stretch-induced surfactant secretion. While heterozygous gain-of-function variants in TMEM63B have been associated with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy, no human disorder has previously been linked to bi-allelic loss-of-function variants. Here, we report five individuals from four unrelated families with childhood interstitial lung disease and bi-allelic predicted loss-of-function variants in TMEM63B. Affected individuals presented with early-onset respiratory distress, chronic hypoxemia, and diffuse parenchymal lung abnormalities on chest imaging. One individual died in infancy, two underwent bilateral lung transplantation, and two require oxygen …

Implications Of Weather Variability On Corn Yield In The U.S., Gideon Ayettey Jul 2026

Implications Of Weather Variability On Corn Yield In The U.S., Gideon Ayettey

LSU Master's Theses

Climate variability is a major source of risk to U.S. crop production, disrupting planting schedules and threatening yields. While prior research has explored the implications of weather shocks on crop yields, this study investigates the indirect channel via which weather variability impacts corn yield through planting delays in the U.S. Previous research has shown that U.S. corn production is highly vulnerable to short-term climate variability (Hu & Buyanovsky, 2003). We use county-level data from 2015 to 2024 for the top five corn-producing states and use a 2-stage least squares method to measure the effect. However, in our specification, planting day …
