Empowering Nurses Of Minority In The Face Of Incivility And Bullying: Through The Lens Of Phenomenology, Corrine M. Floyd Jul 2021

Empowering Nurses Of Minority In The Face Of Incivility And Bullying: Through The Lens Of Phenomenology, Corrine M. Floyd

Dissertations

Up to 85% of nurses have reported exposure to incivility in the workplace (Hunt and Marini, 2012). The often-subtle nature of incivility toward nurses in a minority population may partially explain why it remains a problem. Healthcare organizations realize the need for civility to counter the high turnover rate, staff shortages, and low job satisfaction reported by nurses, but lack understanding of how nurses of a minority population perceive incivility and bullying. This study aimed to answer the research question how do nurses with minority representation experience incivility and bullying versus empowerment in the workplace? A descriptive phenomenological design used …

Racial Dissimilarity And Employee Attitudes And Behaviors: The Moderating Role Of Competitive Work Environment And Social Support, Sydney Green Jul 2021

Racial Dissimilarity And Employee Attitudes And Behaviors: The Moderating Role Of Competitive Work Environment And Social Support, Sydney Green

LSU Master's Theses

Racial diversity within public and private organizations is a controversial topic: many companies are encouraged to make their team racially representative of the general public while also maintaining productivity. At the same time, research suggests that increasing racial diversity may have a negative influence on desirable work-related outcomes, especially if employees perceive themselves to be racially dissimilar from their coworkers. In attempting to increase racial diversity, organizations may leave some of their employees experiencing negative consequences related to being the only employee of a particular racial minority group (e.g., Black). These types of circumstances and their negative consequences adds to …

Changing An Institutional Environment Through Appreciative Inquiry: Rochester Institute Of Technology’S College Of Liberal Arts, Corinna Schlombs, Ann Howard, Caroline Delong, Jessica Lieberman

The Seneca Falls Dialogues Journal

This article introduces readers to Appreciative Inquiry as a form of feminist engagement in higher education. Appreciative Inquiry is a strength-based approach to organizational change that builds on positive psychology as well as social construction of language. At Rochester Institute’s College of Liberal Arts, a group of women faculty currently pursues an Appreciative Inquiry process to change their institutional environment to make it more beneficial to the success of women (and colleagues of all genders) rather than changing themselves to better fit into the existing environment. At the 2014 Seneca Falls Dialogues, members of this group engaged conference participants in …

Gendering The Public Sector: Women’S Status In Local Administrations. A Case Study From Spain, Eva Bermúdez-Figueroa Jul 2021

Gendering The Public Sector: Women’S Status In Local Administrations. A Case Study From Spain, Eva Bermúdez-Figueroa

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women’s role in political representation has been deeply studied in the administration and political literature, but scarcely researched from an employment point of view. Furthermore, there is a lack of attention to public employment in administrations, specifically municipalities, which are the closest public level to the citizenry. We claim women's employment in public administration presents similar characteristics to private employment—occupational segregation, wage gap, glass ceiling—despite being a traditional niche of protected employment for women in Europe and globally. This fact is contrary to what might be expected, from a guarantor of equality in the public sector.

Face‐To‐Face With The New: Libraries Readiness And Perspectives Towards The Changing Service Environment, Christine M. Abrigo, Efren M. Torres Jr.

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The new normal has changed the nature of work and services, and a library's readiness, considering these abrupt but mandatory changes, has challenged, and influenced their response to meet the demands of the new service environment. This paper seeks to explore how the library management in academic and school institutions has been adapting to this change, how their priorities have shifted in reinventing their action plans and innovative library responses, to ensure meeting new expectations to support the perceived needs of their communities, especially in the next normal future. It specifically probes into managing change in charting strategic plans, upper …

Building Ambidexterity In Libraries: Role Of Competitive Intelligence, Adebowale Jeremy Adetayo, Mufutau Ayobami Asiru, Ibrahim Bolaji Omolabi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Academic libraries are increasingly becoming affected by rapid changes in information technology, competition from the private information sector and fear of losing the monopoly position. Academic libraries’ dilemma is evident, based on the declining support from parent institutions and declining use trends. In the face of stiff competition, their reaction has to be quick to preserve their place. Academic librarians cannot efficiently prepare for the future or position themselves until they create a balance between exploitation and exploration. To remain relevant, librarians must re-strategize by building ambidexterity into the library through competitive intelligence (CI). The article explores a structural approach …

A Clinical Practice Guideline: Hospice Care In The Emergency Room, Samer Saad Jul 2021

A Clinical Practice Guideline: Hospice Care In The Emergency Room, Samer Saad

Dissertations

Hospice patients use the emergency department (ED) for the management of symptoms, making it necessary for ED nurses to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to care for hospice patients. EDs should have staff specially trained to address end-of-life needs due to ED staff's minimal knowledge of treating and managing hospice patients. When healthcare organizations fail to provide clinical practice guidelines (CPG) and collaborate with significant stakeholders adequately, gaps in care delivery can occur, and hospice care is often not delivered safely. Standardized guidelines on end-of-life care in the ED should provide adequate guidance for ED nurses in bridging …

How Team Emotions Impact Individual Employee Strain Before, During, And After A Stressful Event: A Latent Growth Curve Modeling Approach, Shi (Tracy) Xu, Larry R. Martinez, Hubert Van Hoof

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Employee strain is a significant and costly issue for hospitality organizations. This study investigated the change trajectory of strain pre, during, and post a discrete stressful event and how cohesion and group emotional variability altered the shape of the trajectory. Using an experience sampling method approach, we gathered 402 daily observations from 84 workers in a period that included a specific stressful event, the opening of a one-night “theme dinner” restaurant that catered to dinner guests from the general public. We used latent growth curve modeling to investigate the change of strain among employees over time. The results showed that …

The Impact Of Radical Change On Leadership Development In Large Companies, Julita Majczyk Jul 2021

The Impact Of Radical Change On Leadership Development In Large Companies, Julita Majczyk

European Management Studies

Purpose: This study aims to identify and describe changes in leadership development programs caused by the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Design/methodology/approach: Participants were selected purposefully. The core part of the qualitative study involved 25 individual in-depth interviews. Findings: The data indicates that leadership development is not perceived as a core business process. In most cases, certain learning interventions were withheld but not terminated or managers ordered a digital culture transition. Data shows that given the progressing change, there is a need for further reflection on whether technology-mediated leadership behaviour would not be a standard. Research limitations/implications: Qualitative research does not permit …

Measuring Parental Involvement As Parental Actions In Children’S Private Music Lessons In China, Cancan Cui Jul 2021

Measuring Parental Involvement As Parental Actions In Children’S Private Music Lessons In China, Cancan Cui

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anonymity has long been discussed as a source of disinhibition. The myth of the Ring of Gyges illustrates how a person may act immorally solely because they know they will not be caught (Plato, 375/2017). Incorporating perspectives of rational choice and deterrence, anonymity serves as a form of risk reduction within hedonistic calculus (Beccaria, 1764/1963; Bentham, 1781/2000). Analogous to the myth of the Ring of Gyges (Plato, 375/2017), techniques of anonymity “hide” users from others while online. These techniques serve as a form of risk reduction, reducing the certainty of punishment (Becarria 1764/1963). Additionally, there are many ways by which …
