American Health Care: Paradigm Structures And The Parameters Of Change, Allen W. Imershein May 1980

American Health Care: Paradigm Structures And The Parameters Of Change, Allen W. Imershein

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Recent commentary on the health care scene in the U.S. has moved increasingly toward explanations of why little or no change has occurred despite many declarations of "crisis." From Alford's (1975) elitist analysis in Health Care Politics to Navarro's (1976) marxist analysis in Medicine Under Capitalism, critics in and out of the social sciences have tried to make sense of the array of current problems and the apparent lack of response to or change in them. These analyses are in striking contrast to earlier commentaries (e.g., Schwartz, 1971; Garfield, 1970; Anderson, 1972; Citizens Board, 1972) which, while highly critical of …

The Impact Of Consumerism On Health Care Change: Alternatives For The Future?, Allen W. Imershein, Eugenia T. Miller May 1980

The Impact Of Consumerism On Health Care Change: Alternatives For The Future?, Allen W. Imershein, Eugenia T. Miller

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The quest for consumer participation in the management of health care delivery may have experienced its first signs of success, but the implications of that success are as yet unclear. The establishment of consumer majorities on the newly developed health systems agency (HSA) boards was seen as an important milestone in the development of the consumer movement in America over the last ten years. The initial wave of optimism over the Great Society programs that in part gave birth to the consumer movement has long since vanished, but some of the organizational results of those attempts at innovation have become …

An Institutional Analysis Of The Water Allocation Process In South Dakota As It Relates To The Designation Of Wild, Scenic And Recreational Rivers, Peter Donald Manley Jan 1980

An Institutional Analysis Of The Water Allocation Process In South Dakota As It Relates To The Designation Of Wild, Scenic And Recreational Rivers, Peter Donald Manley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota’s system of water allocation I general, of which river designations are a part, affect groups with preferences concerning the use of water resources. This study’s main hypotheses is that groups with preferences concerning river designations will have their preferences affected, it is expected, by the make-up of the system. For example, both water development and preservation interests wish a water allocation system which facilitates them in pursuing their preferences. According to the Department of Natural Resource Development. “…the Legislature can aid water development in South Dakota…through the alteration of expansion of administrative institutions and arrangements.” On the pro-designation …

Budgeting Capital For R & D: An Application Of Option Pricing, John W. Kensinger Jan 1980

Budgeting Capital For R & D: An Application Of Option Pricing, John W. Kensinger

Historical Working Papers

This paper presents the insight that R&R investments are "natural" options, and examines the extent to which they can be valued using currently available option pricing models. The nature of the industrial research effort determines whether the appropriate model is based on a diffusion process or a jump process. The option model based on the former is sufficiently developed to satisfactorily deal with the direct benefits of R&D, while the model base on the latter presents several problems. Furthermore, indirect benefits are not captured in these models. These applications and shortcomings are examined in detail in the hope of not …

Correlates Of Climate Discrepancy, William F. Joyce, John W. Slocum, Jr. Jan 1980

Correlates Of Climate Discrepancy, William F. Joyce, John W. Slocum, Jr.

Historical Working Papers

Foremen from three truck manufacturing plants were assessed for performance, job satisfaction, and psychological climate in order to gain understanding of the differences between a concensus perspective of organizational climate and individual perceptions of climate. A measure of climate discrepancy seems to be a better predictor of performance than a measure of organizational climate.

Project Abandonment As A Put Option: Dealing With The Capital Investment Decision And Operating Risk Using Option Pricing Theory, John W. Kensinger

Historical Working Papers

The possibility of liquidating assets used in a capital project are modeled as a "put" option in order to properly incorporate the qualities of the assets in the total valuation and assessment of risk in the project. Where assets can be diverted to other uses, abandonment of the project carries less risk than if the assets expired.

Comparison Of The Eeocc Four-Fifths Rule And A One, Two Or Three Binomial Criterion, Marion Gross Sobol, Paul Ellard Jan 1980

Comparison Of The Eeocc Four-Fifths Rule And A One, Two Or Three Binomial Criterion, Marion Gross Sobol, Paul Ellard

Historical Working Papers

The amount of error is examined in using the four-fifths rule or the standard deviation to decide court cases which deal with discrimination. Since one, two or three standard deviations may be used as a criterion, it becomes apparent that it is possible for players in a court case to "game" the scenarios and use statistics to support their case. It is suggested that courts adopt a statistical standard in addition to the four-fifths rule in order to minimize the game playing.

Person-Situation Interaction: An Exploration, William F. Joyce, John W. Slocum Jr., Mary Ann Von Glinow

Historical Working Papers

Data from foremen working in 3 plants owned by one manufacturing firm were surveyed to assess work climate, job satisfaction, achievement and motivating potential. Results were used to build a taxonomy for classifying patterns of fit between persons and situations. Three congruency models are used to interpret the data and interpretation seems to support the need to weigh environmental variables fully in examining performance.

University Schools Of Hotel Administration: A Comparative Description, Patrick Joseph Moreo Jan 1980

University Schools Of Hotel Administration: A Comparative Description, Patrick Joseph Moreo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify and select a model for the analysis of autonomous schools of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Administration; The problem was to ascertain what patterns of structure and characteristics emerged from an analysis of programs at three selected institutions; A model based upon R. Campbell's operational areas of education administration and process elements of administration was devised. It divided H.R.I. education administration into the following operating areas: Alumni-Industry Relations, Curriculum and Instruction, Students, Faculty and Staff, Physical Facilities, Finance and Resource Allocation, Administrative Structure; A questionnaire was then developed based upon the model. At …
