Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison Jan 1991

Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

U.S. firms face a major global competitiveness challenge. Although the problems relate, in part, to differences in the economic structure, history and cultural differences between the U.S. and foreign rivals, these factors may not explain as much of the variance in competitiveness as they did in the past. Competitiveness problems are also linked to a number of strategic factors under the control of managers. Among them are the absorption of managerial energy in mergers and acquisitions, increasing levels of debt, increasing firm size, greater firm diversification, lack of investment in human capital and inappropriate corporate culture.

In response to these …

The Effect Of Sexual Harassment On Female Naval Officers: A Phenomenological Study, Kathleen Anne Krohne Edd Jan 1991

The Effect Of Sexual Harassment On Female Naval Officers: A Phenomenological Study, Kathleen Anne Krohne Edd

Dissertations

Sexual harassment has grown to epidemic proportions since being documented as a workplace problem. Court cases are rising along with costs to organizations from litigation, turnover, absenteeism and stress-related medical claims. Courts are continually refining the legal definition of sexual harassment, resulting in a steady expansion of employers' liability. Perceptions of men and women regarding what constitutes sexual harassment differ markedly as do their responses to sexually oriented behaviors at work. Development of a formula for effectively preventing sexual harassment is, therefore, a complex and perplexing exercise. Two of three women serving in the military report that they have been …

The Application Of Student Development Theory In Multicultural Programming, Sharon Kay Johannsen

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine the application of student development theory in multicultural programming. Part I takes a look at the theoretical models of Hoopes (1979) and Katz (1984). Bridges (1980, 1988) offered insight into ideas from the corporate world which may apply directly to related issues in higher education. Part II looks at the application of theory from first an administrative and then a student affairs approach. Combined, both approaches prove valuable for the institution as a whole to utilize effective models and implement multicultural programming. Part Ill offers implications and advances the discussion of issues, …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Clayton Michael Wilcox

Graduate Research Papers

Jack Bowsher savy- a system serving only a quarter of its patrons well. A system which seemed immune to its own failures. I don't see it as an indictment of the.system, rather I see it as a challenge. My study in the graduate program has given me a perspective and sense of direction which can be used to make a difference. My graduate program, twelve years of classroom teaching and three years of administrative practice have been combined to develop a vision that, according to Jamieson and O'Mara (1991), reflects best practice, accepting individual differences, valuing people and providing choice. …

Collegiality Or, Talking With Women, Joanna Rotté Jan 1991

Collegiality Or, Talking With Women, Joanna Rotté

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines collegiality within academic governance, framing women administrators as agents of organizational change amid prevailing male dominated power structures. Drawing on feminist theory, theatre studies, and personal narrative, it analyzes how corporate managerial models permeate higher education culture, marginalizing female leadership and constraining collaborative practice. An anecdotal case drawn from a university theatre production illustrates the tensions that emerge when conventional authority expectations confront egalitarian ideals, revealing persistent gendered communication, objectification, and professional isolation. Through critical reflection, the discussion elucidates the influence of language, affect, and institutional memory in maintaining patriarchal norms, yet highlights the potential for transformative …

Leadership Development At A Training Center In The Philippines, Henry Heng-Lee Tan Edd

Dissertations

The great tragedy today is the dearth of leadership in many of our organizations. The cry for leadership, "Where are the leaders?" reverberates around the world without any active response. Consequently, many organizations have initiated steps to incorporate the process of developing leaders from within their organizations. One such organization is the Campus Crusade for Christ International. This researcher examined the leadership training program of Campus Crusade's Great Commission Training Center (GCTC) in Manila, Philippines by asking nine research questions arising from "How is training for leadership presently incorporated into the GCTC curricula?" Such programs usually include weight reduction programs, aerobic exercise classes, blood pressure monitoring and so on. Theoretically, the ideas of Mead and Becker are investigated as one approach to the understanding of health behaviors. Methodologically, the utilization of needs assessment and evaluation tools provide integral information for the development of a program specifically tailored to …

A Multidimensional Career Commitment Measure (Mccm) Gauging Motivation To Work In One's Career Field., Kerry D. Carson Jan 1991

A Multidimensional Career Commitment Measure (Mccm) Gauging Motivation To Work In One's Career Field., Kerry D. Carson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Past career commitment measures have been redundant with other work commitment measures or have been narrowly defined as professionalism. Blau's (1985) definition of career commitment as one's attitude towards one's vocation seems to most closely represent this construct. However, his measure has several problems including construct overlap with career withdrawal intentions. Because of a developmental lag in the career focus domain due to lack of established measures, the reported research constructed and tested a theoretically based measure of career commitment. Development of a new career commitment measure was based on London's (1983) theory of career motivation consisting of three theoretical …
