An Analysis Of Strategic Planning In Land-Grant University Libraries, Laverna M Saunders

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study determined the extent to which the 1862 and 1890 land-grant university libraries had implemented strategic planning, including the reasons, processes, problems, and benefits of strategic planning. Descriptive statistics were used to compile the data which were compared to Meredith's results. The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Powerlessness, And Job Satisfaction Among Registered Nurses, Evelyn C. Wirsing

Masters Theses

A cross-sectional descriptive correlational design was used to investigate the following research questions: (a) How much variation in nurses' satisfaction can be predicted from locus of control and powerlessness? and (b) are there statistically significant (p {dollar}<{dollar}.05) differences in job satisfaction among nurses based upon their primary area of practice, highest earned degree, length of employment in current position, and employment status? A random sample of 300 staff nurses from a large acute care teaching hospital was surveyed utilizing a four-part questionnaire. The response rate was 51% (N = 152). Powerlessness accounted for 29% of the variance in job satisfaction scores and locus of control accounted for none of the variation in job satisfaction. Secondly, a weekly significant difference (F(5, 146) = 2.29, p {dollar}<{dollar}.05) in job satisfaction scores existed among clinical specialty groups, however no significant differences in job satisfaction were found for the remaining professional characteristics.

The Brief Symptom Inventory and Atwood and Hinshaw's Nursing Job Satisfaction and Job Stress Scales were used to measure the variables. A moderately strong correlation (r = {dollar}-{dollar}.63, p =.001) was found between job satisfaction and perceived job stress. No significant relationship was found between perceived job stress and psychological symptoms. These findings suggest that …

Dissertations

The growing diversity of the work force is having and will continue to have a significant impact on organizations. The diversity of cultures, lifestyles, and household compositions compels managers and organizational leaders to make a variety of organizational changes. Additionally, the globalization of business, the integration of the world economy, and the rapid changes in corporate life require a reexamination of how organizations are thought of, and how employees are managed (Copeland, 1988; Betters-Reed & Moore, 1988-89; Goldstein, 1988). Since in the past organizations have been based on white male European traditions, a revolutionary response is needed from organizational leaders …

This research focuses on one unique group of people, the site administrators in a large school district, and seeks to ascertain the effects of the effective schools' accountability movement as seen from the perspective of school principals. The three major objectives of this study were …

Emerging Standards For Judicial Review Of Irs Revenue Rulings, Linda Galler Jan 1992

Emerging Standards For Judicial Review Of Irs Revenue Rulings, Linda Galler

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The language of the Internal Revenue Code is subject to continuous interpretation by courts and administrators. On a seemingly daily basis, the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issue departmental positions on selected statutory provisions. Treasury pronouncements most commonly take the form of regulations and revenue rulings. Regulations are issued in accordance with formal publication, notice, and comment procedures dictated by the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). Revenue rulings, however, emerge through a process that takes place solely within agency confines. Free from the burden of formal issuance procedures, the IRS may promulgate revenue rulings frequently and expeditiously. These …

Taking Back A Rich Tradition: A Sociological Approach To Workplace And Industrial Change In The Global Economy, Marvin S. Finkelstein

Clinical Sociology Review

Sociology possesses a rich and deep tradition in the field of industry, work and organizations However, its past preeminence in the field lies encrusted under layers of research and practice done by those in other disciplines This is particularly disappointing with regard to the absence of sociologists' involvement in the momentous changes overtaking the industrial landscape—the move to more flexible and participatory workplace arrangements Part of the problem is the lack of a coherent theoretical framework to help locale a distinctively sociological approach and provide a clear clinical role for sociologists This article attempts to "take back" sociology's considerable heritage …

Merchant Vessel Crew Levels: An American Perspective, Douglas A. Nemeth

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper, with an emphasis on policies of "effective manning," provides a critical appraisal on the issue of crew levels aboard large merchant vessels (those greater than 1,000 gross tons). Non-traditional approaches to crew organization and management are discussed. Special regard is made to addressing the various domestic and international laws, regulations, and conventions that pertain to ships' manning. The relationship between the seafarer and ships' safety is emphasized as it pertains to reduced crew size. It is argued that U.S. manning laws and regulations should be amended to permit not only smaller crews, but organizational changes aboard ship that …
