Examining The Intention-Behavior Gap: The Impact Of The Food Environment On The Eating Behaviors Of Low-Income African American Women, Karen Glownia
Examining The Intention-Behavior Gap: The Impact Of The Food Environment On The Eating Behaviors Of Low-Income African American Women, Karen Glownia
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The current study investigated environmental barriers to the intention-behavior gap. The food environment was examined as a moderator between motivation for healthy living and actual eating behavior. A sample of 55 low-income African American women (Mage = 30.25, SD = 7.46) completed self-report motivation and eating behavior questionnaires. The food environment was measured by the number and proportion of healthy and unhealthy food retailers in one’s neighborhood using ArcGIS mapping software. The results showed that greater motivation was associated with less unhealthy eating when there was relatively equal access to nearby unhealthy and healthy food retailers. When given …
Parenting, Neighborhood Characteristics, And Disruptive Child Behavior In Low-Income African American Families, Alyssa Buthman
Parenting, Neighborhood Characteristics, And Disruptive Child Behavior In Low-Income African American Families, Alyssa Buthman
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to further examine the multifaceted relationship between parenting, neighborhood characteristics, and child disruptive behavior. Examining data from a low-income, African American preschool sample, this study investigated how self-reported neighborhood characteristics and observed parenting behaviors uniquely predicted observed disruptive behavior in children. Findings supported the strong relationship between parenting behaviors and child disruptive behavior where parenting sensitivity and engagement were predictive of fewer child disruptive behaviors while verbal and physical parenting interference and intrusiveness was predictive of greater disruptive child behavior. Neighborhood characteristics did not directly relate to parenting or child behaviors. However, neighborhood characteristics …
Characterization Of Cofilin And Its Potential Role In The Epha4 Pathway, Brian Donald Condron
Characterization Of Cofilin And Its Potential Role In The Epha4 Pathway, Brian Donald Condron
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
EphA4 is a receptor tyrosine kinase that is responsible for cellular adhesion and locomotion using repulsion signaling in early development of Xenopus laevis. EphA4 regulates cellular locomotion by controlling proteins within its signal transduction pathway, which may include the protein cofilin. Cofilin actively severs and removes actin monomers, thus altering the actin cytoskeleton, leading to the cessation of cellular crawl. During the gastrulation phase of embryonic development, individual cells are relocating to create the three primary germ layers of the organism. Failure of this process to occur results in attrition of the embryos, frequently by way of embryonic exogastrulation. …
Influence Of Social Cues On The Initiation Of Migratory Behavior In Red Crossbills (Loxia Curvirostra), John Bobo
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The timing of migration is crucial for the fitness of organisms because mistimed migration can cause exposure to difficult conditions. Photoperiod drives migratory timing in many species, but little work has focused on how social cues might fine-tune migratory timing. The goal of this study is to determine if birds use social cues from conspecifics to fine-tune the initiation of migratory behavior and physiology. Red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra) are gregarious, nomadic migrants that make seasonal movements to find patchily-distributed conifer seeds and are responsive to social cues in the context of food. I test the hypothesis that social …

No. 55: Food Clusters, Food Security And The Urban Food System Of Northern Namibia, Lawrence Kazembe, Jonathan Crush, Ndeyapo Nickanor
Hungry Cities Partnership
A central feature of the transformation of urban food systems in cities of the Global South is the growing presence of supermarkets and their supply chains, often termed supermarketization or a supermarket revolution. A key issue in the African context is whether supermarkets are a threat to other sources of food including informal sector vendors. Most research on the supermarket revolution and competition with other food retailers focuses on large urban conurbations with little attention paid to the role of supermarkets in secondary urban centres. This paper aims to rectify this situation through a case study of the role of …

No. 85: Pandemic Food Precarity, Crisis-Living And Translocality: Zimbabwean Migrant Households In South Africa During Covid-19, Sujata Ramachandran, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera, Elizabeth Opiyo Onyango
Southern African Migration Programme
COVID-19 has been a great disrupter of international migration and a social and economic disaster for migrants. The findings in this report come from a household survey conducted by SAMP in mid-2021 in the South African cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg. The report argues that years of crisis-living in a hyperinflationary environment in Zimbabwe left many households in a pre-pandemic state of food insecurity and vulnerable to the pandemic shock. At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis reduced the ability of Zimbabwean migrant households in South Africa to assist family back in Zimbabwe. As well as contributing to greater …

Use Of Occupational Therapy To Optimize Feeding In The Transition Home From The Nicu, Morgan Oster
Use Of Occupational Therapy To Optimize Feeding In The Transition Home From The Nicu, Morgan Oster
OT Student Capstones
Current literature demonstrates a need for occupational therapy services following fragile infants’ discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), specifically regarding feeding. Infants receive necessary medical attention and therapy services while in the NICU but are often discharged without a plan of care for continued services. NICU follow up programs (NFUs) strive to close the gap in services by providing immediate follow up post NICU discharge for the infants and their caregivers. However, occupational therapists (OTs) remain inconsistently consulted in these programs, creating potential for missed opportunities to provide the best possible health outcomes for these fragile infants. This …

Identifying An Association Between Sensory Processing And Food Sensitivities, Taylor Tonks
OT Student Capstones
Introduction: Feeding difficulties are quite common in children and can lead to a multitude of poor health outcomes. Children with sensory processing difficulties can present with feeding difficulties. The relationship between sensory processing and feeding difficulties in children has been previously researched. However, most of the existing research focuses on children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Methods: The purpose of the present study was to identify the association between sensory processing and food sensitivities in children of varying diagnoses using retrospective data. In the study, the researcher included 47 children who presented to an outpatient pediatric clinic for a feeding …

The IPCC’s 6th Assessment report reasserts overwhelming evidence that global warming is primarily due to anthropogenic activities causing imbalances in the carbon cycle. Our economic reliance on fossil fuels for industrialisation, urbanisation and farming exerts pressure on the Earth system. Population growth, affluence and technology represent significant sources of environmental pressure. Rapidly dispersed anthropogenic deposits constitute an alarming cause of modification of the Earth's crust, which has already become overwhelmingly dominant over nonhuman ecological processes. The current trajectory of socio-ecological interaction risks irreversible changes to the Earth system, where positive feedback may propel our life-supporting ecosystems beyond tipping points. The …

Appearance And Performance Enhancing Drug Usage And Body Image Across Three Age Cohorts Of Fitness Enthusiast Men, Jessica Strübel, Rose Leger, Xintong Guan
Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Faculty Publications
Background: Because research findings on men’s body image and compensatory behaviors (e.g., appearance and performance enhancing drug (APED) usage) across the lifecycle in men is contradictory, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between age and body image concerns, and to investigate the specific types of APEDs used across the three age cohorts (emerging, established, and middle-aged men). Methods: Using an online survey and a sample of 1020 fitness enthusiast men, we investigated (1) type of APED/supplements used across three periods of life (emerging adulthood, established adulthood, middle age), and (2) any relationship between period …

Which evolutionary theory can best benefit psychological theory, research, and application? The most well-known school of evolutionary psychology has a narrow conceptual perspective (a.k.a., “Narrow Evolutionary Psychology” or NEP). Proponents of NEP have long argued that their brand of evolutionary psychology represents a full-fledged scientific revolution, with Buss (2020) recently likening NEP’s scientific impact to that of a Copernican or Darwinian paradigm shift. However, NEP stands on two traditions that are now the subjects of serious debate and revision: the neo-Darwinian adaptationist framework within evolutionary biology, and the computationalist “mind-as-computer” framework within cognitive science. Although NEP calls itself revolutionary, the …

Comparing The Effects Of Vegan Diets Versus Ketogenic Diets On Glycemic Control In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, April Mccune, Timothy Aylward, Andrea Abernathy, Justin Gambini
Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
Purpose: The purpose of this review is to explore whether plant-based (vegan) diets result in greater reductions in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) than high-fat carbohydrate-restricted (ketogenic) diets in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Search Criteria: PubMed and Cochrane library databases were systematically searched for all relevant studies using MeSH terms (("diet, high fat" AND "diet, carbohydrate restricted") OR "diet, ketogenic" OR "diet, vegan") AND "diabetes mellitus, type 2/therapy". Limiting the research to meta-analyses and systematic reviews narrowed the results to six articles. One systematic review was excluded because it examined the effects of ketogenic diets on the quality …

Environmental Weed Risk Assessments
Introducing new plants to an area may have both positive and negative effects on the environment, economy and community. To minimise the negative environmental impact of introducing new agricultural species, DPIRD conducts a risk assessment procedure based on widely accepted scientific standards. This report assesses Caribbean stylo (Stylosanthes hamata). Caribbean stylo (Stylosanthes hamata) is an annual or short-lived perennial herbaceous legume. Individual plants behave as self-regenerating annuals or biennials. In the Northern Territory up to 40% of plants persist from one wet season to the next (Cameron 2010), but this varies depending on the length of the dry season. It …

Alkaloid-Based Chemical Defenses In 11 Species Of Bufonid Poison Frogs From Brazil (Bufonidae: Melanophryniscus), Emily Staufer
Masters Theses
The term ‘poison frog’ describes members of five anuran families that are capable of sequestering lipophilic, alkaloid-based chemical defenses from their prey. Alkaloid defenses can vary widely within and among poison frog species, mostly linked to differences in availability of arthropod prey at different scales. While research has mainly focused on alkaloid variation within the dendrobatid and mantellid poison frogs, bufonid poison frogs in the genus Melanophryniscus demonstrate high inter- and intra-species alkaloid variation, and some members are capable of both sequestering dietary alkaloids and synthesizing alkaloids metabolically. However, of the 31 species of Melanophryniscus, only eight have ever had …

Differential Impact Of Biological And Behavioral Traits On Postexercise Energy Intake In Men Andwomen, Christoph Höchsmann, Safiya E. Beckford, Jeffery A. French, Julie B. Boron, Jared Stevens, Karsten Koehler
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The energy intake response to exercise is highly variable and energy (over-) compensation via increased post-exercise energy intake occurs in some individuals but not others. In explorative analyses, we aimed to identify biological and behavioral predictors of post-exercise ad libitum energy intake and whether these predictors differ from ad libitum energy intake after rest.
Conclusions:Post-exercise energy intake is associatedwithdifferent factors than energy intake after rest and behavioral and biological traits differentially affect post-exercise energy intake in men and women. In women, habitual exercise behavior seems to predict postexercise energy intake, protecting against compensatory eating. Inmen, appetite-regulating hormones play a role …

Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and Hispanic and low-income US children have a higher prevalence of untreated caries than their higher-income and non-Hispanic White (NHW) counterparts. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many dental offices and school sealant programs closed beginning March 2020. We examine the effect of reduced access to restorative care and sealants on the oral health of children from low-income households overall and by race/ethnicity and how increased sealant delivery in September 2022 could mitigate these effects. We used Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation to model COVID-19’s impact on first permanent molar (1M) caries incidence and loss in quality of …
