The anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) technique is the gold-standard treatment for myeloradiculopathy. We present the case of a seventy-five years old female who came to revision because of worsening solids dysphagia, dry cough, and foreign body sensation in the past two weeks; we had practiced her an ACDF procedure four years ago. She denied presenting neurological deficit or neck pain. The physical examination was normal. Cephalic migration of the left C3 screw was evident on cervical plain and dynamic films and CT-Scan. She was admitted to the hospital for an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy that visualized retropharyngeal ulceration. Thirty …

No. 54: Affordable Food Shops And Urban Food Security In China, Taiyang Zhong, Jonathan Crush, Yaya Song, Zhenzhong Si, Steffanie Scott, Yuxin Peng

Hungry Cities Partnership

Food subsidies have been widely implemented as part of government policies to mitigate food insecurity among the urban poor. The effectiveness of supply and demand-side subsidies have been a source of debate in the literature. One form of supply-side subsidy designed to make food more affordable to low-income consumers is to offer subsidies to retail outlets. China’s affordable food shop (AFS) program is one such example. The program was introduced by the central government in 2011 and implemented by municipal governments. Shops signing on to the program were required to sell a list of essential food items at a discount …

Teacher Retention In Public Illinois Unit School Districts Among Select Demographic Variables, Ted Walk

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many school districts in the United States are facing growing concerns regarding the shortage of qualified candidates for teaching positions. This problem has existed for some time, and its deleterious effects are exacerbated in school districts that have significant teacher turnover. School districts with higher teacher retention can mitigate some of the issues that arise with underqualified teachers. A number of factors may influence teacher retention in a school district including academic achievement scores, per pupil expenditures, graduation rate, chronic absenteeism, and percentage of low-income students. This quantitative study attempted to elucidate the interrelationships between these variables and determine which …

The Real Cause Of The Broken Rib: Developments In Pediatricians' Approach To Child Abuse; 1960 - 2020, Sofia Charania

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

In 1962, C. Henry Kempe published his landmark work, The Battered Child Syndrome, and set into motion a new discourse on child abuse within the American pediatrics community. This paper discusses the tension pediatricians felt between longstanding assumptions of parental virtue and the implications of the emerging conversation on child abuse started by Kempe. It also discusses the resistance shown by some pediatricians to accepting the reality of abuse and the slow process by which that resistance was overcome, aided by factors such as pediatricians’ involvement in adoption procedures. As pediatricians began confronting and understanding child abuse more deeply, their …

Identification Of Circulating Plasma Ceramides As A Potential Sexually Dimorphic Biomarker Of Pancreatic Cancer-Induced Cachexia., Jeffery M Chakedis, Mary E Dillhoff, Carl R Schmidt, Priyani V Rajasekera, David C Evans, Terence M Williams, Denis C Guttridge, Erin E Talbert

Oncology Articles

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients who exhibit cachexia lose weight and have low treatment tolerance and poor outcomes compared to cancer patients without weight loss. Despite the clear increased risk for patients, diagnosing cachexia still often relies on self-reported weight loss. A reliable biomarker to identify patients with cancer cachexia would be a valuable tool to improve clinical decision making and identification of patients at risk of adverse outcomes.

METHODS: Targeted metabolomics, that included panels of amino acids, tricarboxylic acids, fatty acids, acylcarnitines, and sphingolipids, were conducted on plasma samples from patients with confirmed pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) with and without cachexia …

Validation Of Prmr Equations In A Non-Caucasian Sample – Ethnicity As A Variable In Predicting Resting Metabolic Rate, Erin N. Bannister

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study intends to identify a predictive resting metabolic rate (pRMR) equation that is predictive of the measured resting metabolic rate (mRMR) in a sample that includes a group of Black Americans. The handful of commonly used pRMR equations, such as the Mifflin- St. Jeor or Harris-Benedict equations, were created without defining the demographics of their populations, while validation of these equations is typically done with almost exclusively Caucasian subjects. Black and brown Americans require the same evidence of precision in predictions of daily energy needs as Caucasian Americans. When applied to non-Caucasian samples, these equations appear in the literature …

The Internal And External Expectancies Scale: Development And Validation., Joanne Raptis

Theses and Dissertations

Healthy lifestyle habits are widely known to improve physical and psychological wellbeing, but many struggle to regularly practice these behaviors. As an overarching solution has yet to emerge, it may prove more fruitful to instead personalize behavior change recommendations and interventions. The present study examined whether individual responsiveness to internal and external expectations can be measured, as it could be a useful behavioral factor to target with tailored treatment recommendations. This construct was first postulated by popular author Gretchen Rubin (2015) but has yet to be studied empirically. For the current project, the Internal and External Expectancies Scale (IEES) was …

The Multi-Level Marketing Pandemic, Christopher Bradley, Hannah E. Oates Jan 2022

The Multi-Level Marketing Pandemic, Christopher Bradley, Hannah E. Oates

Tennessee Law Review

Among the societal effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a sharp rise in the activities of multi-level marketing companies (MLMs). MLMs are business enterprises in which participants seek not only to sell products to friends, family, and social media contacts, but also to recruit them as MLM participants, with the promise of "building their own business from home."

False promises often pervade MLM sales pitches. Evidence shows that few participants see even a dollar of profit from their MLM work; the vast majority of recruits quickly abandon their MLM dreams and lose their investments. Yet the pitch has become …

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

This thesis comprises of two articles covering spent hemp's prospects as an animal feed and the price interaction across the hemp commodity value-added supply chain. The first article uses a comparative analysis tool to analyze the potential of spent hemp as an animal feed or feed ingredient based on its yield, nutritional composition and market price. This comparative advantage analysis revealed that spent hemp is competitive based on its rich essential nutritional content, comparatively high yield per acre, and low market price. Furthermore, with the increasing drought conditions, production cost and market price of alfalfa hay, spent hemp may fill …
