Differences Between Northern And Southern Female Coyotes, Alina Gabriela Monroy-Gamboa
Differences Between Northern And Southern Female Coyotes, Alina Gabriela Monroy-Gamboa
Western North American Naturalist
The coyote (Canis latrans) has a wide distribution range, spanning boreal forests from the north of the continent to tropical environments in Central America, showing great adaptation and plasticity. Bergmann’s rule states that individuals inhabiting colder climates are larger than those in warmer climates. It is suggested that in carnivore species, litter size is influenced by allometric constraints such as maternal body size. The aim of this study is to analyze the relations using correlation between female coyote mass, latitude, and litter size. Using data compiled from the literature, I carried out statistical analyses to correlate female body …

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications
Background: About 47% of children < 5 years of age are stunted in Guatemala. In this study, the investigators aimed to compare growth and cognitive outcomes between children in second grade that attended five Guatemala City Municipal Nurseries (GCMN) vs. same sex, grade, and age-matched children. Methods: A cross-sectional design nested in a retrospective cohort was implemented between 2015 and 2019. Children that attended the GCMN and matched controls completed a math test and validated receptive language and fluid intelligence tests. The primary caregivers completed a sociodemographic survey. General and generalized linear mixed effect models were used to compare children that attended the GCMN vs. controls. The models were adjusted by maternal education, sex, asset score, and other relevant covariates. Results: Children that attended the GCMN exhibited greater math and fluid intelligence scores relative to the controls in the adjusted models (ß = 6.48; 95% CI (2.35–10.61)) and (ß = 1.20; 95% CI (0.12–2.29)), respectively. Lower odds of stunting were significant for children who went to any early childcare institution (AOR = 0.28; 95% CI (0.09–0.89)). Conclusions: The importance of integrating nutrition and high-quality early childhood education interventions in cognitive and growth outcomes is highlighted in this study. The GCMN model may be a scalable model in similar low-resource settings.

Understanding how countries improve children’s nutrition can inform policies and contribute to further improvements. We examined the relationship between improvements in nutrition in Rwanda (1992–2017) and political commitment to- and policy coherence in- nutrition. We reviewed nutrition-relevant Rwandan policies and programs (2000–2018) and conducted 90 semi-structured interviews with national (n = 32), mid-level (n = 38), and community (n = 20) nutrition stakeholders and 40 community-level focus group discussions (FGDs). FGDs and sub-national interviews were conducted in ten purposefully selected districts, five each in which stunting decreased (reduced) and increased or stagnated (non-reduced) between the 2010 and 2014/15 Rwanda Demographic …
The Individualized Education Program (Iep) Team As Interprofessional Health Care Team: Team Members' And Pediatric Residents' Perceptions, Tara Minor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Background: Interprofessional health care teams have been widely studied. Neglected in the discussion of interprofessional health care teams, however, are Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams, despite their integral connection to children's health care. This study explored the concept of IEP teams as interprofessional health care teams by examining how IEP members, including pediatricians, conceptualize individuals' team roles and whether a simulated IEP meeting affects pediatric residents' attitudes about the interprofessional nature of and their roles on IEP teams.
Methods: Pediatric residents (n=18) from a large, urban academic medical center participated in a simulated IEP meeting. Quantitative data from the Interprofessional …

The Impact Of Waxy Wheat Flour, Inulin And Guar Gum On Post-Prandial Glycaemic And Satiety Indices, Sensory Attributes And Shelf Life Of Tandoori And Pita Breads, Yaseen Galali, Gail Rees, Victor Kuri
School of Biomedical Sciences
The purpose of this study was to develop two different functional breads (Pita and Tandoori) supplemented with novel functional ingredients: waxy wheat flour (15%), inulin (8%) and guar gum (2%) independently and in combination. The breads were submitted to sensory characteristics, shelf life, glycaemic and satiety indices assessments. Both guar gum and inulin independently and in combination significantly (p < 0.05) decreased post-prandial blood glucose and glycemic response of Pita (GI of guar gum bread was 55%, inulin 57%) and Tandoori (GI of guar gum bread was 57% and inulin bread was 60%) compared to the control breads (GI 100%). Moreover, the results of the area under the curve of satiety showed that the addition of functional ingredients increased satiety levels as follows: for Pita, control was 355, a combination of all ingredients was 418, inulin was 451 and guar gum was 452; for Tandoori, control was 329, a combination of all ingredients was 420, inulin was 381 and guar gum was 390. The results showed that all sensory characteristics were improved, and breads were acceptable (all obtained more than five points) when the highest proportions of ingredients were added. Similarly, the shelf life of supplemented Pita and Tandoori breads was improved with the addition of ingredients. Therefore, the functional ingredients such as inulin and guar gum can be used independently and in combination to reduce GI and increase satiety of Pita and Tandoori bread with acceptable quality and shelf life.

Land use modelling is increasingly used by archaeologists and palaeoecologists seeking to quantify and compare the changing influence of humans on the environment. In Southeast Asia, the intensification of rice agriculture and the arrival of European colonizers have both been seen as major catalysts for deforestation, soil erosion, and biodiversity change. Here we consider the Tuwali-Ifugao people of the Cordillera Central (Luzon, Philippines), who resisted Spanish colonial subjugation from the 16th to the mid-nineteenth century, in part through the development of a world-renowned system of intensive wet-rice terrace agriculture. To quantify changes in how the Tuwali-Ifugao used their environment, we …

Intersecting Disparities: Food Insecurity On College Campuses, Montserrat Alejandre Jimenez, Keira Johnson, Nicole Lefebvre, Isabelle Scheffler, Fabian Venegas-Ramos
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
As students who attend a small midwestern university, we have realized that food disparities and insecurity is an often-overlooked problem. Drawing on a broader dataset, we analyzed how students are affected by food insecurity. Investigators analyzed fifteen transcripts of student interviews, created a codebook and coded the interviews. In analyzing the codes, investigators focused on three central themes: the lack of awareness of resources on or near campus, the student strategies to mitigate food insecurity, and the dietary habits or restrictions that make finding adequate food more challenging.

We compiled hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope compositions (δ H and δ O) of leaf water from multiple biomes to examine variations with environmental drivers. Leaf water δ H was more closely correlated with δ H of xylem water or atmospheric vapour, whereas leaf water δ O was more closely correlated with air relative humidity. This resulted from the larger proportional range for δ H of meteoric waters relative to the extent of leaf water evaporative enrichment compared with δ O. We next expressed leaf water as isotopic enrichment above xylem water (Δ H and Δ O) to remove the …

The Differential Effects Of Prenatal Exercise Training Type On Maternal Glucose Metabolism: A Secondary Data Analysis Of A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial, Stephanie Prostko
Theses and Dissertations
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) complicates 10-12% of pregnancies worldwide and poses significant, immediate, and long-term health risks to both the mom and baby. Importantly, consistent research demonstrates participating in sufficient levels of exercise during pregnancy may effectively manage maternal glucose levels, thereby potentially decreasing the risk of GDM. Most of these studies however, restricted their investigations to exposing pregnant women only to aerobic exercise. Previous studies in non-pregnant populations showed various exercise training types, such as resistance and combined (resistance + aerobic) training, elicited positive, independent effects on glucose metabolism, yet similar effects in pregnant women are unclear. PURPOSE: To …

Increased optimal plant density is necessary in ensuring future food security by increasing crop productivity. However, maintaining relatively high plant density has to overcome two challenges i.e. kernel abortion and stalk lodging. The response of maize to increased plant density and the effects of increased plant density on maize productivity were discussed in this research. Increased plant density induces increased plant height, causes low photosynthetic capacity, limits the carbohydrate supply and increases kernel abortion. Also, increased plant density incurs a high risk of stalk lodging due to increased ear height and diminished stem diameter associated with reduced vascular bundles that …
