Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: During the last several years, diametrical difference in attitude to physical activity in youth has been noticed. Engagement in any form of physical activity always goes together with motivation for its undertaking, most often connected with realization of personal expectations. Its sources are perceived, among others, in interior factors, such as: joy resulting from participation in physical activity itself, personal achievements, and pleasure of finding release in movement or social contacts, e.g. spending time with friends. The present paper attempts to assess the motivation for additional physical activity undertaken by first-year students of the Faculty of Physical Education at …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

With reference to the arena in the ancient Greek ritual theater, the Roman circus, or later the medieval arena as the venue of tournaments of knights, the author recalls the changeability of social functions of public spectacles. Together with the expansion of corporeality and the spirit of competition that started at the beginning of the 20th century, when a sports arena became a place of testing human physical possibilities, also the idea of a modern football stadium is born. The aim of this paper is to synthesize psychosocial aspects of Polish fans’ participation in UEFA EURO 2012. In his paper …

For Every Rat Killed, Etienne C. Toussaint

Faculty Publications

If my grandmother had survived the sickness of old age and were alive to witness the economic injustices wrought by capitalist culture, what would she think? If my grandmother were alive to observe familiar technologies for exterminating household pests—surveil-lance, capture, imprisonment, disposal—being increasingly aimed toward low-income Black communities, what would she believe? If my grandmother were alive to discover, in the palm of her hands, a digital platform for spreading information (and misinformation) to the masses and painting new futures into the minds of lawmakers and politicians, what would she say?

Studies have shown that low-income individuals are more likely …

Herbal remedies are increasing in popularity as treatments for metabolic conditions such as obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. One potential therapeutic option is fenugreek seeds (Trigonella foenum-graecum), which have been used for treating high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes. A proposed mechanism for these benefits is through alterations in the microbiome, which impact mammalian host metabolic function. This study used untargeted metabolomics to investigate the fenugreek-induced alterations in the intestinal, liver, and serum profiles of mice fed either a 60% high-fat or low-fat control diet each with or without fenugreek supplementation (2% w/w) for 14 weeks. Metagenomic analyses of intestinal …

Identifying Hypertension Interventions For Vulnerable, Urban African American Primary Care Patients: Literature Review And Patient Perspectives., Rebecca Nye, Will Lehmann, Kjersti Knox, Bonnie Bobot, Deborah Simpson

Aurora GME

Introduction/Background

Hypertension (HTN) is more prevalent in African Americans (51.7%) than white individuals (43.6%). African Americans are more likely to suffer adverse HTN consequences including cardiovascular disease and death. Among young African Americans (18-44 yo), 30% have HTN. This increased prevalence is attributable to many factors, including structural racism, distrust of the health care system, and access to care. In an urban primary care residency clinic, a disparity was noted in HTN control between young African American patients and young white patients.

Hypothesis/Aim Statement

Identity interventions associated with improved HTN control in urban, vulnerable, young (18-50 yo) African American patients …

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Dietary nitrate (NO3-) supplementation, provided as beetroot juice, improves cardiovascular, cognitive, and contractile function by augmenting nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis; however, the specific taxa responsible, and whether NO3- ingestion can promote a favorable microbial composition to produce NO is yet to be established. To determine whether acute NO3- supplementation is associated with specific microbial taxa in females, 15 healthy adult females consumed an acute dose of NO3--depleted beetroot juice (PL) and NO3--rich beetroot juice (BR). Bacterial DNA from the buccal cells were isolated for subsequent 16s DNA sequencing for preserved regions in their 16s rRNA gene. Concentrations were assessed with …

Modeled Wellness: How Perceived Supervisor Wellness Explains Supervisee Personal Wellness, Kevin A. Doyle, Laura Welfare Mar 2022

Modeled Wellness: How Perceived Supervisor Wellness Explains Supervisee Personal Wellness, Kevin A. Doyle, Laura Welfare

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

In this quantitative investigation of 105 counselors-in-training, we analyzed how their perceptions of supervisor wellness are related to their own levels of wellness. The supervisee’s perception of their site supervisor’s level of wellness did explain the personal wellness of the counselor-in-training and the strength of the supervisory relationship acted as a suppressor variable in the expanded regression model. Implications for counselor educators and supervisors include the importance of adopting positive wellness attitudes and behaviors. Counselors-in-training appear to notice, for good and for bad, their supervisors’ levels of wellness. Adopting positive wellness attitudes and behaviors allows supervisors to model positive approaches.

Trauma-Informed Child Client Advocacy (Ticca) Plan: Conceptualization And Case Study, Aubrey D. Daniels Mar 2022

Trauma-Informed Child Client Advocacy (Ticca) Plan: Conceptualization And Case Study, Aubrey D. Daniels

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; Ratts et al., 2016) and the American Counseling Association (ACA) Advocacy Competencies (Lewis et al., 2003; Ratts et al., 2010; Toporek & Daniels, 2018) formalized the advocacy process for counselors. Nevertheless, the literature focused on the advocacy competencies does not provide child client advocacy examples or a concise plan for advocacy efforts for clinical mental health counselors to follow with children. To bridge this gap, this article is in place to describe a new advocacy plan, Trauma-Informed Child Client Advocacy (TICCA), followed by a case study providing context for how this plan …

Promoting Well-Being From The Start: Implementation Of A Wellness Curriculum, Nayoung Kim, Jayna Mumbauer-Pisano Mar 2022

Promoting Well-Being From The Start: Implementation Of A Wellness Curriculum, Nayoung Kim, Jayna Mumbauer-Pisano

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The 2016 Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs standards (F.1.k.) and the 2014 American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (C.2.g.) stipulate that counselor wellness and self-care be prioritized throughout counselor education programs. However, there is little evidence to suggest counselors’-in-training (CIT) wellness increases during a counseling program. The Introduction to Counseling Wellness Curriculum (ICWC) was developed to assist in meeting these standards and promote wellness from the onset of a counseling program. This eight-week long curriculum presents content to cover different dimensions of wellness and specific activities to implement self-care practices. The skills obtained through the …

From The Margins To The Center: Southern Women's Activism, 1820-1970, Jean Gould Bryant

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1988, participants in the First Southern Conference on Women’s History lamented the neglect of southern women’s history. Despite the rich research possibilities suggested by Gerda Lerner’s 1967 biography of the Grimké sisters of South Carolina and her documentary history, Black Women in White America (1972), and by Anne Firor Scott’s The Southern Lady: From Pedestal to Politics, 1830-1930 (1970), only a small fraction of the new scholarship on women’s history dealt with the South.1 Women’s historians focused largely on women in the North, while southern historians examined race, but not gender, and African American historians generally ignored black women …

The Beginnings Of Big Sugar In Florida, 1920-1945, John A. Heitmann Mar 2022

The Beginnings Of Big Sugar In Florida, 1920-1945, John A. Heitmann

Florida Historical Quarterly

During the past several years, the Florida sugar industry has been under the journalist’s microscope and scrutinized as no other agricultural enterprise in America. If we are to believe the evidence presented in Alec Wilkinson’s Big Sugar, or essays written over the past decade that appeared in Forbes, George, the Nation, and Florida Trend, one must conclude that Florida sugar interests are economically privileged and politically powerful, ruthlessly exploitative towards labor, and, to top it off, largely responsible for the environmental degradation of the Everglades.1 During the 1980s the focus of the attack centered on the industry’s use of imported …

Fecal Microbial Transplant For Weight Loss In Adults Living With Obesity And Diabetes, Nathan Franks Mar 2022

Fecal Microbial Transplant For Weight Loss In Adults Living With Obesity And Diabetes, Nathan Franks

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Obesity remains a pressing health concern amongst the US population. Currently, behavior modification is the primary approach to weight management. However, this strategy is not always successful and many are relegated to medications or surgery to achieve weight loss. Research associating the gut microbiome with obesity has fostered interest in microbiome manipulation as a means for weight loss. One method of manipulation, fecal microbial transplant (FMT), has received particular attention. While early inquiry into FMT and weight loss has been unrevealing, heterogeneous methodologies and lack of long term trials limits the ability to draw conclusions. To investigate the potential adjunctive …

Personalized Meal Plans As An Intervention To Enhance Dash Diet Adherence In Hypertensive Adults, Christopher Shimwell Mar 2022

Personalized Meal Plans As An Intervention To Enhance Dash Diet Adherence In Hypertensive Adults, Christopher Shimwell

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

The Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is more effective as a standalone treatment at lowering blood pressure than any pharmaceutical intervention alone, but adherence is poor and current interventions to improve adherence only show marginal improvements. Personalized meal plans are effective at improving diet adherence in other chronic conditions and may serve as an effective intervention for DASH diet adherence. In a randomized controlled trial, we will determine whether nutritional counseling plus personalized meal planning (intervention) improves DASH adherence more than nutritional counseling alone (control). We will randomize n=178 adults with primary hypertension to either the intervention or …

Potassium Supplements Versus Hydrochlorothiazide In Hypertensive African Americans: Noninferiority Trial, Marshall Walters Mar 2022

Potassium Supplements Versus Hydrochlorothiazide In Hypertensive African Americans: Noninferiority Trial, Marshall Walters

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Hypertension disproportionately affects African Americans. First-line monotherapy for treating mild-to-moderate hypertension in African Americans is with thiazide-type diuretics, particularly hydrochlorothiazide. However, the efficacy of non-pharmaceutical control of blood pressure via potassium supplementation is comparable in this population and has a favorable side effect profile. We hypothesize that daily 80mEq potassium supplementation is non-inferior to 25.0mg hydrochlorothiazide in reducing systolic blood pressure in African American adults. To test this hypothesis, we will conduct a double-blind, randomized controlled trial and measure systolic blood pressure at 3 months and 6 months after initiating daily potassium supplementation versus low-dose hydrochlorothiazide and will evaluate this …
