Paediatric Physical Activity And Health: Moving Towards A Measure Of Quality, Cain C.T. Clark, Claire M. Barnes

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

It is clear that physical activity, holistically, is linked with several positive factors through the life course. There exists a large evidence base for physical activity quantity, yet there has been little integration of physical activity qualities, and whilst qualityis a nebulous term, recent developments in literature suggest it may be a viable measure in the characterisation of physical activity. The purpose of the study was to comprehensively review the development towards a measure of physical activity quality.‪A review of literature was conducted using online databases: Web of Science, PubMed and Google Scholar. A narrative review was subsequently prepared on …

Sex, Sovereignty, And The Biological In The Interwar Arab East, Susanna Ferguson Mar 2022

Sex, Sovereignty, And The Biological In The Interwar Arab East, Susanna Ferguson

Middle East Studies: Faculty Publications

This article frames the history of anticolonialism in the Arab world as a history of gender, sex, and power. By thinking with early twentieth-century Arab intellectuals, it revises the assumption that the heterosexual body enters into politics primarily as a site of regulation and control. Europeans justified colonialism in the Arab East by arguing that Arabs were like children who needed tutelage before self-rule. Arab writers contested these temporal assumptions through their own theories of human development. Some figured childrearing as a form of temporal engineering through which Arab women would control human and civilizational growth. Others, like cosmopolitan Arab …

Obesity caused by overnutrition is a major risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several lipid intermediates such as fatty acids, glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids are implicated in NAFLD, but detailed characterization of lipids and their functional links to proteome and phosphoproteome remain to be elucidated. To characterize this complex molecular relationship, we used a multi-omics approach by conducting comparative proteomic, phoshoproteomic and lipidomic analyses of high fat (HFD) and low fat (LFD) diet fed mice livers. We quantified 2447 proteins and 1339 phosphoproteins containing 1650 class I phosphosites, ofwhich 669 phosphositeswere significantly different between HFD and LFD mice livers. …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The human population is aging faster and faster than in the past. As a result, it can be demographically proven that there will be more people older than 60 worldwide in the next 35 years. According to the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA’s) India Aging Report 2017, the proportion of people over 60 could increase from 8% in 2015 to 19% in 2050. The Indian government in particular states in its report that there will be 340 million people over 60 by 2050, creating new challenges due to specific characteristics and needs. However, this often overlooks the group of older …

An Investigation Of A Novel Broad Autism Phenotype: Increased Facial Masculinity Among Parents Of Children On The Autism Spectrum, Diana Weiting Tan, Syed Zulqarnain Gilani, Gail A. Alvares, Ajmal Mian, Andrew J. O. Whitehouse, Murray T. Maybery

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The broad autism phenotype commonly refers to sub-clinical levels of autistic-like behaviour and cognition presented in biological relatives of autistic people. In a recent study, we reported findings suggesting that the broad autism phenotype may also be expressed in facial morphology, specifically increased facial masculinity. Increased facial masculinity has been reported among autistic children, as well as their non-autistic siblings. The present study builds on our previous findings by investigating the presence of increased facial masculinity among non-autistic parents of autistic children. Using a previously established method, a 'facial masculinity score' and several facial distances were calculated for each three-dimensional …

Assessment Of The Influence Of Socio-Demographic And Personality Factors On Health Behaviours In Healthy Postmenopausal Women, Daria Schneider-Matyka, Elzbieta Grochans, Agnieszka Samochowiec, Malgorzata Szkup, Katarzyna Augustyniuk, Anna Jurczak, Malgorzata Sterczak

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: Lifestyle and health behaviours are determined by the level of knowledge, beliefs, existing dysfunctions, and interpersonal relationships, as well as personality factors. The aim of this study was to assess health behaviours undertaken by postmenopausal women, and to analyze how they are influenced by personality factors. Material/Method: The study included 196 postmenopausal women at the mean age of 56.80 +/- 4.08. The Health Behaviour Inventory and a personality questionnaire (NEO-FFI) were used. Results: In the study, women living in cities of over 100.000 residents scored higher than those living in smaller towns (p<0.05). The level of neuroticism negatively correlated with overall health behaviours, health practices, and a positive mental attitude (p<0.05). The level of conscientiousness negatively correlated with health behaviours, a positive mental attitude, and preventive behaviours (p<0.05). Positive correlations were observed between the level of extraversion and overall health behaviours, preventive behaviours, normal eating habits, health practices, and a positive mental attitude (p<0.05). Conclusions: 1. Raising the awareness through educational programmes implemented as part of care provided by primary care centres (especially in smaller towns and rural areas) could improve the level of healthful behaviours undertaken by postmenopausal women. 2. Health behaviours are also greatly dependent on personality traits, which are biologically determined and relatively stable.
