Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) is an ancient biopolymer that is well preserved throughout evolution and present in all studied organisms. In mammals, it shows a high co-localization with mitochondria, and it has been demonstrated to be involved in the homeostasis of key processes within the organelle, including mitochondrial bioenergetics. However, the exact extent of the effects of polyP on the regulation of cellular bioenergetics, as well as the mechanisms explaining these effects, still remain poorly understood. Here, using HEK293 mammalian cells under Wild-type (Wt) and MitoPPX (cells enzymatically depleted of mitochondrial polyP) conditions, we show that depletion of polyP within mitochondria …

Public Charge Grounds For Inadmissibility: Impact On Noncitizen Health Insurance Coverage, Madeline M. Culbreth Mar 2022

Public Charge Grounds For Inadmissibility: Impact On Noncitizen Health Insurance Coverage, Madeline M. Culbreth

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The public charge rule is an ongoing barrier to health insurance for lawfully

present immigrants and ought to be removed. Healthcare coverage for

immigrants is a critical aspect of the country’s health care scheme. Recent

changes to the United States’ immigration policy are contributing to growing

fears among immigrant families about participating in Medicaid and CHIP.

The most effective solution is to permanently alter the Immigration and Nationality

Act. Congress should expressly exclude health insurance from being

considered in the public charge grounds for inadmissibility.

More Money, Fewer Problems: A Post-Alston V. Ncaa Approach To Reducing Gender Inequities In Sports, Kelley L. Flint

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

In 2021 over the span of a few months, amateurism, the foundation of the

National Collegiate Athletic Association was challenged and redefined. Following

the passage of “name, image, and likeness” laws at the state level

and an unfavorable Supreme Court ruling, the NCAA’s structure has been

forced to evolve. These changes have opened up possibilities for college athletes

to monetize their playing in a model that is not based on viewership or

revenue sharing. Serious equity gaps between men’s and women’s sports

continue to exist, predicated on which sports generate the most money. While

not a holistic solution, name, image …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Microbial symbionts play a significant role in plant health and stress tolerance. However, few studies exist that address rare species of core-microbiome function during abiotic stress. In the current study, we compared the microbiome composition of succulent dwarf shrub halophyte Zygophyllum qatarensis Hadidi across desert populations. The results showed that rhizospheric and endosphere microbiome greatly varied due to soil texture (sandy and gravel). No specific bacterial amplicon sequence variants were observed in the core-microbiome of bulk soil and rhizosphere, however, bacterial genus Alcaligenes and fungal genus Acidea were abundantly distributed across root and shoot endospheres. We also analyzed major nutrients …

Numerical Investigation Of Above-Sea Gas Dispersion And Expected Explosion Overpressure On The Offshore Platform Under Varying Sea And Weather Conditions, Ashwin Asogan, Asher Ahmed Malik, Mohammad Shakir Nasif

Platform: A Journal of Engineering (PAJE)

Above sea gas dispersion resulting from subsea release could cause explosion risk to a nearby ofshore platform. Past researchers performed a CFD-based assessment of above sea gas dispersion under the varying sea and environment conditions, but the resulting expected overpressure consequences due to the potential ignition of dispersing fammable on an ofshore platform under such varying conditions were not investigated. Overpressure estimates under varying sea and weather parameters could support the practitioners in determining the most critical conditions that correspond to the worst consequences on the ofshore platform thus, the research could contribute to process safety. Therefore, in this study, …

Perinatal Nurses' Therapeutic Attitudes Towards Women Who Use Addictive Substances During Pregnancy, Karen D. Neary Mar 2022

Perinatal Nurses' Therapeutic Attitudes Towards Women Who Use Addictive Substances During Pregnancy, Karen D. Neary

Dissertations

The use of addictive substances during pregnancy continues to rise despite the known deleterious effects of addictive substances on the developing fetus. Neonates exposed to addictive substances in-utero suffer from a variety of negative outcomes that result in the need for specialized care. To improve neonatal outcomes, current research promotes involvement of the mother, who used addictive substances during pregnancy, in her newborn's care. However, women who use addictive substances during pregnancy often feel judged and ridiculed by nurses who care for them, or their newborns, leading these women to be less involved in their newborn's care. The purpose of …

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Arsenic, a naturally occurring metalloid derived from the environment, has been studied worldwide for its causative effects in various cancers. However, the effects of arsenic toxicity on the development and progression of metabolic syndrome, including obesity and diabetes, has received less attention. Many studies suggest that metabolic dysfunction and autophagy dysregulation of adipose and muscle tissues are closely related to the development of metabolic disease. In the USA, arsenic contamination has been reported in some ground water, soil and grain samples in major agricultural regions, but the effects on adipose and muscle tissue metabolism and autophagy have not been investigated …
