Shabir Sarwary, MPH
BACKGROUND
Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is an asymptomatic condition in which calcium deposits build up in abdominal aorta. AAC is detectable only by imaging. When present, severe AAC increases the risk of developing major coronary heart disease compared to no or minimal AAC. Depression affects nearly 10% of U.S. adults and is often present among those who have experienced a major coronary heart disease event, such as myocardial infarction. It is unknown if the prevalence of depression is elevated in adults who …

An Online Sleep Hygiene Intervention For A Medical Unit Of U.S. Army Reservists, Shelby Duessel, Haley Bylina, Haliee Baer
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
Sleep issues and their relationship to health and operational effectiveness problems are a growing concern for those serving in the military. In this small study, all 23 members of a U.S. Army Selected Reserve medical unit participated over one month in an online sleep hygiene intervention. Participant sleep quality and sleep duration before and after the intervention were measured using a pre-post assessment design utilizing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Although no change in pre-post total PSQI scores was found, there was a statistically significant (p < .05) increase in participants’ self-reported number of hours slept per night. This change over time suggests the online sleep hygiene intervention may affect number of hours slept per night over a monthlong period.

Human genetic studies support an inverse causal relationship between leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and coronary artery disease (CAD), but directionally mixed effects for LTL and diverse malignancies. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), characterized by expansion of hematopoietic cells bearing leukemogenic mutations, predisposes both hematologic malignancy and CAD. TERT (which encodes telomerase reverse transcriptase) is the most significantly associated germline locus for CHIP in genome-wide association studies. Here, we investigated the relationship between CHIP, LTL, and CAD in the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program (n = 63,302) and UK Biobank (n = 47,080). Bidirectional Mendelian randomization studies …

The Role Of Caffeine, Nicotine And Theobromine In The Biodiversity And Function Of The Human Gut Microbiome, Thomas Gabriel Stanila
The Role Of Caffeine, Nicotine And Theobromine In The Biodiversity And Function Of The Human Gut Microbiome, Thomas Gabriel Stanila
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The human gut microbiome plays a fundamental role in the regulation and maintenance of physiological processes and homeostatic relationships in the body, with research thoroughly proving its effects beyond gastrointestinal functioning such as in immune response, psychological operation, and nutritional metabolism. Caffeine, nicotine, and theobromine—the principal bioactive compounds in regularly consumed products like coffee, cigarettes, and dark chocolate, respectively—may yield significant and variable influences on human health beyond their normal pharmacodynamics through affecting gut microbiota. Using metagenomic modeling, predictions can be determined regarding intestinal community activity as well. I hypothesize that caffeine, nicotine, and theobromine will alter microbial community composition …

Results: When tested on the baseline of isolated tissues, Tfg.Cr was devoid of any activity (stimulant or relaxant) till 10 mg/ml. This is an interesting finding, keeping in mind that the fenugreek seeds are used to alleviate constipation and diarrhoea. When Tfg.Cr was tried for any potential AChE inhibitory activity, it did show an inhibitory effect in increasing concentrations (47-380 μg/ml). This inhibitory effect was comparable to the effect produced by a standard AChE inhibitor physostigmine. One of the known fenugreek constituents, diosgenin, was also tested, and it also showed an AChE inhibitory effect in a concentration-dependent manner (11-190 …

Fruits Of Nandina Domestica Are (Sometimes) Cyanogenic And (Sometimes) Hazardous To Birds, Scott Zona
Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)
A 12-month survey of cyanogenesis in the fruits and leaves of Nandina domestica (Berberidaceae) revealed that the leaves are strongly cyanogenic throughout the year, as measured by the Feigl-Anger test. Fruits vary in their cyanogenic potential depending on the degree of ripeness and clone. Green fruits are strongly and rapidly cyanogenic, but most ripe fruits are weakly and slowly cyanogenic. Some fruits tested negative for cyanide. Fruits tend to become less cyanogenic the longer they remain on the plant, so birds feeding on older fruits are at a lower risk of poisoning. More than other frugivores, cedar waxwings (Bombycilla …
