Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Purpose/Background Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a nationwide growing epidemic which contributes to hundreds of billions of dollars a year in healthcare costs and can lead to significant health complications, such as disability or death. To prevent these complications, patients must maintain adequate blood glucose control by adhering to their treatment plan and adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors, including dietary modifications and exercise. Through Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) and PharmDs, patients can be educated on proper self-management techniques. Current evidence shows that CDEs helped improve Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) levels.
Methods In this retrospective chart review, 29 charts of patients aged …

BACKGROUND:
Undernutrition threatens the health and future of preschool children in disadvantaged remote communities. Home-grown school feeding (HGSF) in nursery schools could positively impact children's nutrition while creating multiple benefits for the whole community. However, evidence is lacking on implementation of HGSF within multi-sectoral programs in remote areas.
OBJECTIVE:
This study assessed an HGSF pilot intervention, part of a nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) program, in a mountain ethnic minority community in Vietnam. It aimed to identify the changes brought about by the intervention, in particular diversity of children's food, food sources, barriers and facilitators to change, and future challenges and strategies. …

Bees obtain nutrients from flowers. Pollen provides proteins and fats; nectar provides carbohydrates. Commercial honey bee colonies pollinate monocultures, which contain one crop type thus, one unbalanced nutritional resource. We examined how a lack of protein diversity affects honey bee pollen foraging behavior. Bees were raised on three diet treatments: no manipulation, all 10 essential amino acids (EAAs, i.e., protein building-blocks), or only 6/10 EAAs. Bee-collected pollen was trapped upon return to the hive and nutritional content was analyzed. We predict …

Malaria was the leading cause of post-neonatal deaths in Mozambique in 2017. The use of insecticide treated nets (ITNs) is recognized as one of the most effective ways to reduce malaria mortality in children. No previous analyses have estimated changes in mortality attributable to the scale-up of ITNs, accounting for provincial differences in mortality rates and coverage of health interventions. Based upon annual provincial ownership coverage of ITNs, the Lives Saved Tool (LiST), a multi-cause mathematical model, estimated under-5 lives saved attributable to increased household ITN coverage in 10 provinces of Mozambique between 2012 and 2018, and projected lives saved …
Effectiveness Of Regional Alternative Food Systems On Food Inequality, Kirsten M. Rydzewski
Effectiveness Of Regional Alternative Food Systems On Food Inequality, Kirsten M. Rydzewski
Masters Projects
Alternative food systems have become a popular response to conventional food systems both agri-business and emergency food assistance charities. Common alternative food systems, like farmers markets, food co-ops, and community supported agriculture, are market-based strategies which emphasize environmental concerns. They are often dominated by white people who deem their emphasis on “local, healthy food” to be universal. While food justice issues are incorporated into some alternative food organizations, not all organizations seek input or engagement with the local BIPOC, Indigenous, and low-income people they serve. This study conducts an analysis of the efficacy of the growing food justice movement’s alternative …

Embracing A Pedagogy Of Care In The Infant And Toddler Classroom, Paige D. Wernick
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Care is a universal concept which connects us all as humans. Everyone comes into this world needing care and most of us will exit this world in need of care. Care is necessary throughout the span of our lives and should be considered a human right. Everyone is entitled to quality care, no matter their age or social status. The U.S. society has been entrenched in a decades long division between education and care which has historically prioritized education over care. This division has contributed to care being hidden and undervalued within the context of early childhood (EC) as a …

Accumulation Of Persistent Organic Pollutants In Marine Mammals: A Case Study On Cetaceans, Pinnipeds, And Sirenians, Alydia Moorhead
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are lipophilic semi-volatile organic chemicals that present a range of challenges to marine biota, specifically marine mammals that often occupy a high trophic position in the food web. POPs have become a global problem since they have been shown to cause immunologic, teratogenic, carcinogenic, neurological, and reproductive complications in living organisms due to their resistance to biodegradation and their lipophilic nature. Marine mammals can accumulate these toxic substances through direct ingestion, trophic transfer, adsorption, and maternal offloading. They are susceptible to both bioaccumulation and biomagnification of POPs. Accumulation of POPs is affected by many variables, including …

- Insects are important models for studying immunity in an ecological and evolutionary context. Yet, most empirical work on the insect immune system has come from phenotypic studies meaning we have a limited understanding of the genetic architecture of immune function in the sexes.
- We use nine highly inbred lines to thoroughly examine the genetic relationships between a suite of commonly used immune assays (haemocyte count, implant encapsulation, total phenoloxidase activity, antibacterial zone of inhibition and pathogen clearance) and resistance to infection by three generalist insect pathogens (the gram-negative bacterium Serratia marcescens, the gram-positive bacterium Bacillus cereus and the fungus …

Increased knowledge of reproduction and health of domesticated animals is integral to sustain and improve global competitiveness of U.S. animal agriculture, understand and resolve complex animal and human diseases, and advance fundamental research in sciences that are critical to understanding mechanisms of action and identifying future targets for interventions. Historically, federal and state budgets have dwindled and funding for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) competitive grants programs remained relatively stagnant from 1985 through 2010. This shortage in critical financial support for basic and applied research, coupled with the underappreciated knowledge of …

A Review Of Urban Poor Health And Health Inequalities, Sheetal Sharma
Management Dynamics
Health of the nation is increasingly seen as a robust predictor of economic growth and assuring a minimal level of health care to the population is a critical constituent of the development process. While rising incomes could lead to better health, the relationship also works in the opposite direction. Urbanization is a symbol of development and also of demographic shifts representing a substantial change from how most of the world's population has lived for the past several thousand year. (In India with the rapidly growing urbanization is also increasing the urban poverty at a high pace and posing challenges to …

Supporting Grandfamilies During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Federal Flexibility And New Funding, Ana Beltran
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
The Covid-19 pandemic has elevated and heightened the challenges and inequities that grandfamilies face. Unlike parents, with automatic legal rights and responsibilities to the children, grandfamily caregivers are often left to navigate systems that impact them but do not understand them. Federal response to the pandemic began by perpetuating these existing challenges. The CARES Act failed to explicitly name grandfamilies for system support, and they and those who work with them had to individually advocate in local communities. Later in the response efforts, federal legislation specifically called out supports for grandfamilies by providing unique federal funding flexibilities for kinship navigator …

Urban Forests And Their Potential To Combat Food Insecurity: Analyzing Street Trees In Baltimore, Md For Their Edibility, Victoria Bearden
Environment and Sustainability Honors Papers
Food insecure environments, in which residents lack consistent access to nutritious food materials, can occur in urban settings. Literature on urban forests suggests that trees can provide a range of provisioning ecosystem services, including edible uses. We consider this to determine if street trees in Baltimore, Maryland have the potential to provide nutritious food materials to address food insecurity in Healthy Food Priority Areas (HFPA), designated by Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. Our analysis utilizes the Plants For a Future database and the geospatial hotspot analysis tool in Esri’s ArcMap to determine the edible quality ratings (EQR) of …

Neither Trumps Nor Interests: Rights, Pluralism, And The Recovery Of Constitutional Judgment, Paul Linden-Retek
Cleveland State Law Review
This Article develops a novel framework for the adjudication of rights in an age of partisan and societal polarization. In so doing, it defends judicial review in a divided polity on new grounds. The Article makes two broad interventions.
First, the Article cautions against recent calls to shift rights adjudication in the United States from Dworkinian categoricalism toward proportionality analysis. Such calls correctly identify how categoricalism, by embracing the absolute nature of rights as “trumps,” pits citizens harshly against one another. The problem, however, is that proportionality’s proponents fail to see how it imposes a rights absolutism of its own. …

Promoting Safe Sleep Education For At Risk Mothers, Breanna James
Dissertations
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is an unexplained scary phenomenon that has plagued parents for years until research determined there was a link between the infants sleeping position and sudden death. Local community leaders in health and advocacy review fetal and infant deaths on an annual basis to identify ways that infant mortality may be prevented. Barriers related to social determinants of health and lack of knowledge specific to safe sleep were identified root causes. Evidence-based recommendations for safe sleep set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing mortality. The purpose of the quality improvement …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
One of the most important issues and challenges nowadays in Egypt is how to provide enough water for current and future needs. The great population growth, agricultural consumption, climate change, limited freshwater resources, and welfare lifestyle require more water. All these factors push the Egyptian policy to search for additional water resources. One of the considerable water resources is the treated wastewater that has been used in irrigation under some restrictions. However, the use of treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation may have negative health effects if its properties were deviated from the allowable standards. This study considers Egyptian standards, regulations, …
