The Restaurant Meals Program: A Guide For New York State’S Successful Implementation, Evan Cohen
The Restaurant Meals Program: A Guide For New York State’S Successful Implementation, Evan Cohen
Theses
In October 2021, New York State (NYS) Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law legislation enacting the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The RMP is an extension of SNAP, allowing eligible SNAP recipients to spend their benefits at restaurants. The goal of the RMP is to allow a targeted SNAP population—the elderly, disabled, and homeless—to have greater accessibility to purchase prepared, low-cost, hot meals that would otherwise be out of reach. Restaurant Meals Programs are currently enacted in just six states. Few analyses have evaluated its strengths and weaknesses. By identifying the RMP-eligible population’s food-related …
Sustainable Applications Of Biochar Derived From Food Waste And Paper Feedstocks, Steven T. Barber
Sustainable Applications Of Biochar Derived From Food Waste And Paper Feedstocks, Steven T. Barber
Theses
There is general agreement in the scientific literature that carbon sequestration is an important tool to mitigate human-induced climate change, but current methods are lacking scalability and economic viability. Though charcoal has been a common fuel for millennia, it has only very recently been purposefully created to sequester carbon. This carbon dense material, called biochar, has been extensively studied as a soil amendment though less studied for industrial applications. Chapter 1 provides an in-depth overview and background discussion of the history and definitions of biochar, distinguishing it from closely related though often misconstrued terms like charcoal, activated carbon, and carbon …

Eat Well, Be Well: Basic Needs Initiative's Online Hub For Nutrition Education, Misha Moseley
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Basic Needs Initiative at California State University, Monterey Bay is a department that provides students with food, housing, and wellness resources. Over half of the university's students experience food insecurity, and over 85% use non-academic resources to learn about nutrition. This project adds a dietary health section to the department’s website to increase students’ access to nutrition education. It addresses the micro-level agency problem that too few students eat a healthy, balanced diet. Unhealthy eating is a risk factor for food insecurity, so the project indirectly addresses the macro-level health problem that too many college students in California experience food …

Cheers For A Cause: Raising Funds For Homeless Youth In Need, Clara Gonzalez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Thousands of homeless individuals in the United States do not have their basic hygiene and nutrition needs met. The Youth Homeless Response Team (YHRT) is a non-profit organization that works to connect homeless youth to wrap around services they need to thrive. YHRT works with unaccompanied at-risk youth in Santa Cruz between the ages of 15-24 who are either literally homeless, at risk of homelessness, or fleeing a domestic violence situation. Unfortunately, YHRT does not have sufficient funding to provide client assistance. This capstone project consisted of implementing “Cheers for a Cause”, a one-day online fundraising event that highlights the …

Intervention Program To Ease The Transition Out Of High School, Marissa Sareñana
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
“At-risk” youth are more likely to drop out of school and less likely to pursue higher education than their counterparts, hindering their economic future. This project was implemented at Learning for Life Charter School (LFLCS), an alternative 7th-12th grade school for at-risk youth. The project included conducting various readiness assessments and an education intervention designed to increase seniors’ level of preparedness for life after graduation. Seniors met individually with social work interns to identify a post-graduation plan, formulating short and long term goals. Once students formulated their post-graduation plans, they were guided on the necessary requirements to transition into their …

PURPOSE: The Mayo-Baylor RIGHT 10K Study enabled preemptive, sequence-based pharmacogenomics (PGx)-driven drug prescribing practices in routine clinical care within a large cohort. We also generated the tools and resources necessary for clinical PGx implementation and identified challenges that need to be overcome. Furthermore, we measured the frequency of both common genetic variation for which clinical guidelines already exist and rare variation that could be detected by DNA sequencing, rather than genotyping.
METHODS: Targeted oligonucleotide-capture sequencing of 77 pharmacogenes was performed using DNA from 10,077 consented Mayo Clinic Biobank volunteers. The resulting predicted drug response-related phenotypes for 13 genes, including CYP2D6 …

Promoting Positive Body Image In Youth, Nancy Yaneli Fragosa Birruete
Promoting Positive Body Image In Youth, Nancy Yaneli Fragosa Birruete
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many adolescents may have a hard time maintaining a positive body image during the transition of puberty and early adolescence. When adolescents do not have a healthy body image, they tend to compare unrealistic ideals such as a thin ideal or an athletic ideal to their own size, shape, or appearance. A poor body image may also lead to developing low self-esteem, eating disorders, and depression. When they develop a positive body image, adolescents are more accepting of their bodies and are able to practice healthier behaviors, experience body satisfaction, and are more likely to practice self-care. To address the …

The Effects Of Poor Maternal Nutrition During Gestation In Sheep On The Reproductive Efficiency Of The Offspring, Morgan Dougherty
The Effects Of Poor Maternal Nutrition During Gestation In Sheep On The Reproductive Efficiency Of The Offspring, Morgan Dougherty
Honors Scholar Theses
Poor maternal nutrition during gestation negatively impacts fetal programming and the development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis in the offspring. Reproductive health of ewes can be characterized by concentrations of reproductive hormones including follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and progesterone, particularly during the estrous cycle. We hypothesized that ewes born to dams that experienced poor maternal nutrition during gestation would have reduced reproductive capability and efficiency. This means that they would take longer to become pregnant and have reduced concentrations of reproductive hormones compared with those born to mothers fed the control diet. Pregnant dams (F0) were fed one …

Abundances are compared based on the collection site and the physicochemical data recorded on each sampling date. It was found that there were no differences in larval abundance at different sites …
Food Deserts, Crime, And Neighborhood Context: An Examination Of The Impact Of Food Insecurity On Violent Crime In Little Rock, Sarah Dean
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis seeks to explore the indirect and direct relationships between food insecurity, concentrated disadvantage, and distribution of violent offenders through the lens of social disorganization. Data gathered by the Little Rock Police Department, American Community Survey, and city business license records are used to test neighborhood-level relationships across Little Rock, Arkansas’ 155 Census block groups. Pearson’s Correlation is used at the bivariate level and negative binomial regression tests multivariate relationships. The results suggest a null relationship between food insecurity and distribution of violent offenders across Little Rock block groups. However, several findings are consistent with prior research and theory– …

Analysis Of The Factors Influencing Multiple Uses Of Crime Guns: An Exploratory Study, Samantha Scott
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A broad body of literature has been built around the topic of gun violence in the United States. The characteristics of communities, victims, and offenders have each been used to explain variation in the likelihood and frequency of gun crime. Less attention has been given to the factors associated with multiple uses of crime guns. The current study applies binary logistic regression to crime logs maintained by the police department of a mid-size city in the Southeastern U.S. to examine how neighborhood and initial incident characteristics influence the likelihood that a crime gun will be used in multiple incidents. Gang …

Total Rewards Or Totally Not What The People Want? Examining The Preferred Total Rewards Of Those At Home Vs. In The Workplace, Luke Ronchetti
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
With the rapid change to remote work, the present study explored whether differing life circumstances (e.g., an at-home parent vs. an older male) changed reward preferences. The present study adds to the scarce total reward preference research by examining the moderating effect age, gender, and parental status have on the relationship between physical work location and total reward preference. Results indicated age to be a moderator of the relationship between work location and reward preference (benefits, work-life effectiveness, performance management, talent development), but gender and parental status were not significant moderators. Exploratory analyses were performed and found correlations between work …
When The Goal Is To Be Less Stressed: A Naturalistic Investigation Of Academic And Self-Care Goal Completion, Stephanie Wells
When The Goal Is To Be Less Stressed: A Naturalistic Investigation Of Academic And Self-Care Goal Completion, Stephanie Wells
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The demands of college are synonymous with stress for many students, with stress generally being related to academic success and posing a challenge for academic goals and self-care behaviors. Individual difference factors such as resilience and need for cognition may impact this stress experience as well as academic and self-care behaviors. Prior to the current study, self-care had yet to be studied in the same context as academic goal completion. The results of the present research revealed that students were significantly better at completing academic goals versus self-care goals and that self-care goal completion predicted completion of academic goals. Further, …
