Sensory Comparison Of Beer Carbonated Using Forced Carbonation And The Carbo Rock-It, Michala Smith
Sensory Comparison Of Beer Carbonated Using Forced Carbonation And The Carbo Rock-It, Michala Smith
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Craft brewing is a growing market which represents over 12% of beer produced in the United States. Dr. G Scott Osborn, PE invented the Carbo Rock-It™ to improve the carbonation process for craft breweries. The invention allows for shorter carbonation time and uses less CO2, saving companies money and time. Because of the lack of gas losses through bubbling, Osborn theorized that the Carbo Rock-It could also prevent the “stripping of the nose” that can occur in traditional forced carbonation. Existing research supports the mechanism, as beer flavor and aroma volatiles have been detected during the release of …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
BACKGROUND: Cost-related nonadherence compromises successful and effective management of chronic disease. The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) and Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) aimed to increase the affordability of outpatient prescription drugs for older adults (older than age 64 years). The Medicare Part D prescription drug insurance coverage gap (“donut hole”) created by the MMA was fully closed in 2020 by the ACA.
OBJECTIVES: To (1) describe prescription drug coverage and financial hardship from purchasing prescription drugs among older American adults for 2021, (2) compare these results with findings from data collected before the MMA …
Anxiety And Immunity: Affecting The Body And The Mind, Katelynn Dobbs
Anxiety And Immunity: Affecting The Body And The Mind, Katelynn Dobbs
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Speculations have been made within the scientific community that there is a link between the underlying mechanisms that impact anxiety disorders and immune system disorders. While many correlations between these disorders have been observed through various immune system disorder studies, this subject is still severely under-explored. In order to examine the potential relationship between anxiety disorders and immune system disorders, a survey was conducted and distributed among the student population at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. This survey collected data by asking a variety of questions that pertained to anxiety and immune system disorders diagnoses within the student population …
Identification Of Synonymous Genes And Pathways Implicated In Irritable Bowel Disease And Pancreatic Duct Adenocarcinoma, Lavanya Uppala
Identification Of Synonymous Genes And Pathways Implicated In Irritable Bowel Disease And Pancreatic Duct Adenocarcinoma, Lavanya Uppala
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Better understanding and genetic characterization of the gut microbiome will allow for the identification of clinically distinct gastrointestinal diseases. Facilitated by high throughput technologies, intestinal flora analyses have elucidated a broad spectrum of neuropsychiatric, immunological, and allergic disorders linked with this organ system. Microbiome research especially has shed light on underlying factors of intestinal disorders. This interplay of environmental bacteria versus host tissue gene expression may have implications for disease pathogenicity and etiological determination. For instance, pancreatic disorders are common symptoms of irritable bowel disease (IBD), which is thought to affect approximately 7% to 21% of the population [1]. However, …
Diagnostic Utility Of Red Cell Indices In Relation To Serum Iron Indices For Evaluation Of Iron Deficiency In Heart Failure, Larry Wangai Mburu
Diagnostic Utility Of Red Cell Indices In Relation To Serum Iron Indices For Evaluation Of Iron Deficiency In Heart Failure, Larry Wangai Mburu
Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine
Background: Iron deficiency (ID) in heart failure (HF) causes poorer outcomes, and evaluation using ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT) in our setting is hampered by cost and availability. Though the red cell indices (RCIs), routinely used for assessment of ID anaemia, have shown utility in predicting outcomes in HF, they have not been evaluated in this population for prediction of ID relative to the iron indices. A combination of the RCIs, the combined cell index (CCI), may be more accurate. Validating the diagnostic accuracy of the RCIs would improve evaluation of ID in low-resource settings and improve uptake of iron …

"When The Tide Is Out, The Table Is Set": Shellfish Harvesting Throughout The Holocene At Labouchere Bay, Southeast Alaska, Mark R. Williams
Anthropology ETDs
“When the tide is out, the table is set” is a familiar saying among Native communities on the Northwest Coast of North America. This phrase encapsulates traditional ecological knowledge passed down for generations concerning intertidal marine resources. Recent archaeological excavations of shellfish gathering camps at Labouchere Bay confirm that ancient people may have followed similar principles throughout the Holocene (c.9,500 -2,500 years ago). For millennia, shellfish have been a highly reliable food source that helped support sedentary fisher-hunter-gatherer settlements. Although shellfish habitats represent highly predictable foraging opportunities, optimal foraging strategies must be carefully managed to avoid overharvesting. Collecting just enough …
Healthy Diet Affordability In North Alabama During Covid-19, Nicholas Knighten
Healthy Diet Affordability In North Alabama During Covid-19, Nicholas Knighten
Perpetua: The Journal of Undergraduate Research at UAH
Previous research has shown that nutrient dense, low-calorie foods are bought at higher rates by those with higher incomes. 1 These types of studies have engulfed common knowledge on healthy diet affordability. However, a recent study of the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico, California, found a healthy diet filled with popular foods can be afforded by all members of the community.2 By focusing on healthy foods people want to eat and their localized affordability, research applicability in policy clearly increases. This study uses a framework similar to the California study while tweaking a few aspects to better suit a more …

Combating Frailty: Application Of A Modified Skeletal Frailty Index In Modern Military And Civilian Populations., Emily M. Frazier
Combating Frailty: Application Of A Modified Skeletal Frailty Index In Modern Military And Civilian Populations., Emily M. Frazier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Conceptualizing, quantifying, and evaluating frailty in human skeletal remains is critical to understanding and interpreting physiological health and stress among past populations. While many researchers focus on frailty in bioarchaeological samples, developing models for mortality risk and individual- and population-specific indices of stress, no current methods directly address frailty in forensic contexts. This study considers the applicability of a modified index for assessing frailty in forensic anthropology by comparing distributions of 8 biomarkers of stress (linear enamel hypoplasia; periodontal disease; caries; osteoarthritis; intervertebral disc disease; rotator cuff disorder; antemortem fracture; and surgical procedure) using the original skeletal frailty index (SFI) …
Impact Of Concurrent Palliative Care In The Lung Cancer Patient, Kavita Sharma
Impact Of Concurrent Palliative Care In The Lung Cancer Patient, Kavita Sharma
Aurora GME
In 2010, Jennifer Temel et al. published a seminal paper in NEJM on early referral (within 8 wks. of diag) to subspecialty PC at MGH in patients newly diagnosed with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. This showed that early outpatient palliative care in addition to usual oncology care for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer improves physical symptoms, depression, sense of well-being, and not only doesn’t shorten life, but it may also prolong life. This has been a game changer for collaboration between oncology and palliative care. My talk highlights the importance of early involvement of palliative care in the lung cancer …

Haiti is a unique rice market in the sense that, despite the high poverty rates and dependency on rice as a staple, it relies on imports (80% of total consumption) of high-quality milled rice for which it pays a premium price. Haiti requires that all imported rice have a maximum of 4% broken kernels, which results in Haiti importing one of the most expensive non-fragrant long grain rice in the world. This study implements a non-hypothetical field experiment (300 observations) to elicit which rice attributes Haitians valued as revealed by their purchasing behavior in an open-air market setting. Specifically, we …

Shorter Constant Work Rate Cycling Tests As Proxies For Longer Tests In Highly Trained Cyclists, Chantelle Du Plessis, Mark Andrews, Lachlan J. G. Mitchell, Jodie Cochrane Wilkie, Trish King, Anthony J. Blazevich
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Severe-intensity constant work rate (CWR) cycling tests simulate the high-intensity competition environment and are useful for monitoring training progression and adaptation, yet impose significant physiological and psychological strain, require substantial recovery, and may disrupt athlete training or competition preparation. A brief, minimally fatiguing test providing comparable information is desirable.
Purpose
To determine whether physiological variables measured during, and functional decline in maximal power output immediately after, a 2-min CWR test can act as a proxy for 4-min test outcomes.
Methods
Physiological stress (VO _2 kinetics, heart rate, blood lactate concentrations ([La-]b)) was monitored and performance fatigability was estimated (as pre-to-post-CWR …

Optimal Fasting Duration To Effectively Suppress Physiological 18f- Fluorodeoxyglucose (Fdg) Myocardial Uptake On A Positron Emission Tomography Scan., Fatima Abdullahi Ali
Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology
Background: Positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is used in evaluation of inflammatory disorders, including the heart such as cardiac sarcoidosis and myocarditis. However, the normal uptake of the myocardium is a challenge as it can obscure pathological uptake in these conditions. The primary objective of this study is to determine the optimal fasting duration to suppress physiological myocardial uptake and thereafter establish an imaging protocol. Methods: Patients who had whole body FDG PET CT examination for oncological evaluation at the Aga Khan University Hospital between January 2019 and December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into …
The Work Of La Via Campesina Regarding The Intersection Of Land Occupation And Food Sovereignty, Josephine Drydale
The Work Of La Via Campesina Regarding The Intersection Of Land Occupation And Food Sovereignty, Josephine Drydale
International and Global Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
La Via Campesina (LVC), a global movement that supports small and local farmers and their communities, is one of the world’s largest food and agricultural rights movements and advocates for agricultural rights in terms of land, ecology, human rights, and more. LVC is known for its establishment of food sovereignty, defined as the right to control one’s production and consumption of food. This new concept placed them on the map, accompanied by their aggressive editorial and advocacy work against ideals they view as neoliberal and food policies that benefit large food moguls while disenfranchising the small farmer. The concept of …

The Last Leg: A Social Sustainability Assessment Of Ovine Agriculture, Sydney Golding
International and Global Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
Post-war agricultural transformations and the rise of Sustainability discourses have dictated the trajectory of sector industries. The implications of agriculture in lateral policy schemes have neglected the careful consideration of the social health of farmers in decision-making processes, creating a greater divide between the interests of the state and our once revered providers. This study aims to capture the complexity of social matters in agriculture within the specific context of sheep farming in the United Kingdom and the United States and how the concurrent systems have adapted considering the impacts of relevant contemporary historical contexts. The principles of Janker, Mann, …

Strategies For Protection Of The Blood Brain Barrier In Rodent Models Of Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Derek Sunil Nowrangi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating disease that causes a cascade of both mechanical and molecular injury to the central nervous system. It is a debilitating disease that has no well-established treatments, thus leaving an important area to study the pathophysiology of the disease so that new clinically translatable treatments can be found. In the development of translational treatments in experimental ICH, several challenges exist including the designing of studies, method to deliver drugs, proper dosages, and development of models. In our exploration to establish new therapies for ICH, we studied several methods and models that may help to develop …

Improving Larval And Juvenile Lumpfish, Cyclopterus Lumpus, Aquaculture: Nutrition And Growing Conditions, Nathaniel Spada
Improving Larval And Juvenile Lumpfish, Cyclopterus Lumpus, Aquaculture: Nutrition And Growing Conditions, Nathaniel Spada
Master's Theses and Capstones
Salmonids play a major role in aquaculture globally and their production is expected to increase as the human population rises and wild fish stocks decline. Sea lice infestation is the largest economic burdens to salmonid net pen aquaculture with hundreds-of-millions of dollars lost due to the treatment, labor, and loss of biomass associated with these parasitic copepods. Chemotherapeutics were originally used to treat these infestations, but their effects on nontarget species resulted in them being banned in many countries. Many salmonid farmers now utilize cleanerfish technology to resolve this financial stressor. Lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) are efficient delousers in salmonid aquaculture …

Investigating The Ecology And Evolution Of Normal Breast Tissues And Breast Cancer With Single Cell Genomics, Tapsi Kumar, Tapsi Kumar
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
There is vast cellular heterogeneity in human breast tissues, with different transcriptional programs in the stromal, epithelial, and immune components, however, it remains unclear how their reprogramming and interplay leads to the progression of invasive phenotypes such as Triple- Negative Breast cancer (TNBC). To do define the microenvironmental alterations that occur during cancer, we first established a human breast cell atlas, a reference of normal breast cell types from disease free women. We profiled 535,941 cells from 62 women and 124,024 nuclei from 20 women revealing 11 major cell types and 52 cell states that reflect different biological functions that …

In the United States, many communities lack sufficient access to fresh produce. To improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides eligible participants vouchers through the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) that can be redeemed directly from farmers at markets or farm stands. However, FMNP voucher redemption rates in New Jersey remain lower than those in neighboring states. This article used the social ecological model to examine differences between FMNP participants who redeem vouchers (Redeemers) and those who do not (non-Redeemers) in the areas of: produce procurement practices and …

Oestrogenic Subterranean Clover Guide. Identification And Remediation, Kevin J. Foster, Megan H. Ryan, Daniel R. Kidd
Bulletins 4000 -
Subterranean clover (subclover, Trifolium subterraneum L.) is an annual pasture legume that provides high quality feed for livestock. It is estimated to be sown over 30 million hectares across southern Australia, with cultivars developed for the low, medium and high rainfall zones. Unfortunately, some older cultivars contain high levels of phytoestrogen which can affect the reproductive system of sheep and cause other health issues. This became a significant issue for sheep producers from the 1940s as new land was cleared and sheep grazed subclover-dominant pastures. There was a collection of livestock issues observed and these were grouped together under the …
