In the United States, the CDC reported 57.6% of the population is fully vaccinated. With much of the population unvaccinated, potential protective factors are needed to help diminish infection. This literature review aimed to investigate a correlation between low serum vitamin D concentrations and outcomes of COVID-19 infections. A total of 27 research articles …
The Impact Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring In The Management Of Type Ii Diabetes, Benjamin Graf
The Impact Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring In The Management Of Type Ii Diabetes, Benjamin Graf
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), approximately 36 million Americans have a diagnosis of type II diabetes (T2D). Among these patients with T2D, nearly forty percent have glycated hemoglobin A1c (Hgb A1c) values above the target goal of 7%. Many patients with T2D utilize self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) systems to monitor day-to-day fluctuations in blood glucose values. However, SMBG systems can be cumbersome and may result in lower patient compliance. With many patients struggling to achieve their target Hgb A1c, methods to improve glycemic control are needed to prevent long-term diabetes-related complications. This literature review aims to investigate the …

Long Term Outcomes Of Anti-Retroviral Treatment Vs. Additional Nutritional Supplementation For Hiv Patients, Michael P. Gillispie
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
The purpose of this systematic literature review is not to determine the best treatment for human immunodeficiency virus HIV but to analyze additional supplementation that can prolong the progression of the disease process. Zinc, vitamin A, D, and E will be evaluated additionally with the antiretroviral treatment ART. The cost of an ART Regimen can be very expensive and challenging for patients to afford. The goal is to find an acceptable option to complement ART with a sensible cost to prolong disease progression and minimize additional costs of health care. With the advances of ART, more and more patients can …
How Does Access To Primary Care Affect The Latino Population, Brandon Harthan
How Does Access To Primary Care Affect The Latino Population, Brandon Harthan
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Healthcare disparities by race or ethnicity across the United States are becoming more evident as the population continues to grow, none being more evident than that of the Latino population. The purpose of this research is to determine the effects that access to primary healthcare has on the comorbidity and mortality of the Latino population. Much of the research supports the theory that Latino’s are at greater risk of comorbidity and mortality from diabetes, chronic liver disease, and cirrhosis due to their decreased access to primary healthcare services. However, evidence also supports the “Hispanic Mortality Paradox” in which Latinos have …
Hepatitis C Treatment For Substance Users In North Dakota, Janae Arnold
Hepatitis C Treatment For Substance Users In North Dakota, Janae Arnold
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
In the 1960’s, the hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemic began mainly through the transmission of blood transfusions. By the time screening was implemented, millions had already become infected worldwide. After a decade of declining infection rates, a second wave started in the midst of the opioid epidemic in 2010. Prior to 2014 and the application of curative direct-acting antivirals, treatment was expensive, had low efficacy, many side effects, and long treatment durations. Advances in medicine have allowed for HCV elimination with shorter treatment durations, less side effects, and higher treatment rates. Unfortunately, treatment is not offered to all HCV patients …

Introduction Of Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf1) Variant With Increased Stability And Bioactivity, Azadeh Tavousi Tabatabaei
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Human acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor 1 (FGF-1) involves in a broad spectrum of biological processes, including cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, migration, angiogenesis, wound healing, and embryonic development. hFGF1 non-selectively binds to cell surface hFGF receptor isoforms to elicit these cell-signaling processes. Since hFGF1 plays a significant role in tissue repair activity, that is a prime candidate for novel wound healing therapeutics. However, hFGF1 has been found to unfold near physiological temperature due to a strong electrostatic repulsion created by a dense cluster of positively charged amino acids near the c-terminus. The problem not only leads to proteolytic degradation of the …

Macronutrient Availability Shapes Host Response To Infection And Feeding Behavior, Weston Gerald Perrine
Macronutrient Availability Shapes Host Response To Infection And Feeding Behavior, Weston Gerald Perrine
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Macronutrients in the diet are vital to the physiological processes necessary for an organism to effectively clear a pathogen. Diet can be important to a host’s susceptibility to infection and severity of pathology, though results can vary across host-pathogen systems (Sen et al. 2016). Manipulating the ratio of specific macronutrients in the diet is an effective method to begin understanding how individual macronutrients, rather than food types, have on immune responses. Using an avian host-pathogen system, I explored the effects of dietary macronutrient composition, specifically lipid and protein content, on disease pathology and behavior of canaries (Serinus canaria) infected with …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of A Lippia Organoides Essential Oil Extract On Clostridium Perfringens Proliferation In Vitro And Necrotic Enteritis In Broiler Chickens, Makenly E. Coles
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present research was to assess the effects of essential oils derived from the plant Lippia organoides on performance parameters, intestinal integrity, and necrotic enteritis (NE) in broiler chickens. To do this, a previously established challenge model for NE was utilized which included challenging with Salmonella Typhimurium on day 0, Eimeria maxima on day 18, and Clostridium perfringens on days 22 and 23. Treatment groups included a 1) non-challenged, negative control, 2) challenged control, and 3) challenged, Lippia origanoides (37ppm in the diet). Group 1 (negative control) had significantly (P < 0.05) higher body weight gain from d8-25 and d0-25 compared to both challenged groups. Feed intake was significantly different for all three groups (P < 0.05) at 8-25 days and 0-25 days with group 1 having the highest feed intake for both time periods. Total mortality was greater in the positive control when compared to both the negative and treatment groups. NE lesion scores were significantly different between all groups with the positive control having the highest mean lesion scores and the negative control having a mean lesion score of 0. The positive control group had the highest FITC-d amounts detected in the sera, being statistically higher than both the treatment group and negative group which were both statistically different from each other. At the present inclusion rate for the essential oil (37 ppm), there was an overall reduction in the negative impact from the NE infection. Further studies should be conducted to reach more significant conclusions.

Teaching Old Calipers New Tricks: Using Craniometrics For Ancestry Admixture Estimation Via Fuzzy Math, Kristi Carnahan
Teaching Old Calipers New Tricks: Using Craniometrics For Ancestry Admixture Estimation Via Fuzzy Math, Kristi Carnahan
Master's Theses
Cranial measurements have been a cornerstone of physical anthropology since its formation as a discipline in the early 1900s. However, most other ancestry determination methods come with a significant epistemological issue: they differentiate individuals into discrete categories without accounting for the issue of admixture. Advances in data mining and analysis techniques can now be used to help resolve this issue through soft computing, also known as “fuzzy math”. This type of advanced computational math requires specialized knowledge in computer programming, statistics, and data analysis techniques unless one is using computer programs specially designed to run these analyses.

Plasma biomarkers that reflect energy balance disorders in people living with HIV (PLWH) remain limited. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) abundance in plasma of mice and humans induces negative energy balance but also becomes highly elevated in obesity and other metabolic diseases. We sought to compare plasma GDF15 levels in PLWH and HIV-negative persons and mouse models expressing the HIV accessory protein Vpr (that recapitulate HIV-associated metabolic disorders) and determine their relationship to metabolic parameters. We measured liver Gdf15 mRNA levels and plasma GDF15 levels in male Vpr mice and littermate controls. In parallel, we analyzed plasma GDF15 levels in …

Circadian rhythms are approximately 24-hour cycles of variation in physiological processes, gene expression, and behavior. They result from the interplay of internal biological clocks with daily environmental rhythms, including light/dark and feeding/fasting. Note that 24-hour rhythms of liver metabolic processes have been known for almost 100 years. Modern studies reveal that, like metabolism, hepatic gene expression is highly rhythmic. Genetic or environmental changes can disrupt the circadian rhythms of the liver, leading to metabolic disorders and hepatocellular carcinoma. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of mechanisms regulating rhythmic gene expression in the liver, highlighting the roles of transcription …
