Piceatannol, A Dietary Polyphenol, Alleviates Adipose Tissue Loss In Pre-Clinical Model Of Cancer-Associated Cachexia Via Lipolysis Inhibition, Jonathan C. Kershaw, Bennett D. Elzey, Xiao Xuan Guo, Kee Hong Kim

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is the nutrition-independent loss of lean muscle and adipose tissues, and results in reduced chemotherapy effectiveness and increased mortality. Preventing adipose loss is considered a key target in the early stages of cachexia. Lipolysis is considered the central driver of adipose loss in CAC. We recently found that piceatannol, but not its analogue resveratrol, exhibits an inhibitory effect on lipolysis. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of piceatannol in cancer-associated lipolysis and cachexia-induced weight loss. Cancer cellinduced lipolysis in adipocytes was stimulated using cancer-conditioned media (CCM) or co-culture with human pancreatic cancer cells …

Modelling Juxtacrine Mediated Tumor-Fibroblast Interactions In Three-Dimensional Co-Cultures Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Eric Struth May 2022

Modelling Juxtacrine Mediated Tumor-Fibroblast Interactions In Three-Dimensional Co-Cultures Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Eric Struth

Graduate Masters Theses

The tumor-microenvironment is a rich and complex milieu of mutated cancer cells and otherwise healthy cells engaged in dynamic interactions. Fibroblasts, the most abundant cellular component of human connective tissues, are implicated in a tumor promoting process known as stromal crosstalk. This stromal crosstalk is driven by numerous signaling pathways including contact mediated juxtacrine signaling and directed long distance paracrine signaling. Recent research suggests these signaling pathways are particularly important for two distinct types of fibroblasts. Mayofibroblastic cancer associated fibroblasts (MyCAFs) are associated with tumor suppression and shown to rely primarily on juxtacrine signaling, while inflammatory cancer associated fibroblasts (iCAFs) …

Elisa Validation Method For The Detection Of Ketamine In Hair, Daria A. Centonza May 2022

Elisa Validation Method For The Detection Of Ketamine In Hair, Daria A. Centonza

Student Theses

An ELISA method was developed and validated to detect ketamine in human hair samples. Ketamine is an anesthetic drug that causes memory loss, dissociative sensations, and hallucinations. Due to these adverse effects, ketamine is a common drug used in drug facilitated sexual assaults (DFSAs). It is very important to be able to detect the substances used in DFSAs over a longer period of time due to the delayed reporting of these crimes. Victims, often out of fear and from the sedative/memory loss effects of the drugs, tend to report these crimes when it is too late to use urine and …

Economics And Catholic Social Teaching: A Pedagogy Of Navigating Rationality, Self-Interest, Altruism, And Reciprocity, Joselito T. Sescon, Philip Arnold P. Tuaño, Rachel Joyce Marie O. Sanchez, Jaime A. Acevedo, Stephanie Ann Puen

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Proceeding from the dialogue between the tradition of Catholic social teaching (CST) and socio-economic development, this paper addresses the perceived irreconcilability of the neoclassical microeconomic model of rational self-interested individuals with that of the altruistic and sacrificing behavior called for by the Christian church. To confront this research problem, we present the challenging task of teaching economics in a Jesuit and Catholic university that consciously promotes Ignatian values and pedagogy. Highlighting the internal dialogue within the economics discipline on the differing views of self-interest versus community interest, we tackle how economic theory and application have arduously grappled with these two …

Cotton is the most widely used natural fiber for textiles; however, the capacity of cotton fibers to absorb large amounts of moisture, retain oxygen, and have a high specific surface area makes them more prone to microbial contamination, becoming an appropriate medium for the growth of bacteria and fungi. In recent years, the incorporation of silver nanoparticles in textile products has been widely used due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and low toxicity towards mammalian cells. The aim of the current study is to continue the assessment of our developed nanocomposite and evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activity of the …

Association Between Stone Fruit Intake And Markers Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Among United States Adults: Nhanes 2017-2018, Lasya S. Shah

Master's Theses

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the most common cause of mortality in the world affecting people from all backgrounds. There is abundant evidence supporting diet affecting the risk for CVD. The consumption of fruits and vegetables is inversely related to CVD risk factors, likely due to their content of phenolic compounds. Although stone fruits contain high quantities of phenolic compounds, it remains unclear if their intake is associated with CVD risk. In this study, data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2018 were used to estimate the consumption level of stone fruits and whether it was associated with CVD …

Review Of Kangaroo Mother Care In The Middle East, Zainab Taha, Ludmilla Wikkeling-Scott

All Works

Mothers and newborns have a natural physiological requirement to be together immediately after birth. A newborn has a keen sense of smell and will instinctively seek out the mother's nipple and begin breastfeeding if placed skin-to-skin with her. This practice is known as Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). It was first suggested in 1978 and has been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a means to ensure successful breastfeeding. It is well documented that KMC is associated with positive breastfeeding outcomes, particularly in cases where breastfeeding is exclusive and, on average, continued for 3 months or longer. Studies of …

Foundations: Eating. Loving. Praying., George Conesa May 2022

Foundations: Eating. Loving. Praying., George Conesa

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

Kurt Goldstein imagined that at every stage of their development, organisms are, to characterize, wrestling with the imminent and inescapable realities (bio-socio-psychological) of energy (e.g., food and sleep), safety (e.g., hygiene; home and a family), and possibility (e.g., learning; opportunities and luck), and importantly, simultaneously. To oversimplify, Maslow would like us to eat before loving or praying, whereas Goldstein intuits that human motivations are dynamically complex and multifactorial -- in others words, integrally transactional and ongoing. It is Goldstein’s more complex idea that this essay supports.

Ontological Awareness In Food Systems Education, Colin C. Dring May 2022

Ontological Awareness In Food Systems Education, Colin C. Dring

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

We review efforts in Sustainable Food Systems Education and Critical Food Systems Education literature to employ education in ways that seek social and environmental transformation of food systems. Here, we argue that forms of food systems education that are disconnected from awareness of their ontological roots are destined to reproduce the same food systems with the same consequences for life on Earth. This theoretical paper invites discussions that unpack “habits of being” underpinning modern/colonial conceptualizations of food system issues, transformation efforts, and pedagogies. We note the risk of reinscribing, within food systems education, specific onto-epistemological norms and values that are …

Straightforward Information Sold Separately: Why Current Regulation Fails To Adequately Protect Children From Deceptive And Unfair Advertising, Keith A. Gorgos

Journal of Technology Law & Policy

This Article argues that while current regulation and enforcement may protect adults effectively, it fails to appropriately weigh the cognitive abilities of children. If the true mental perspectives of children are taken into account and incorporated into the FTC’s definitions of unfair and deceptive, various advertising tactics that are still used regularly in children’s advertising are potentially deceptive, misleading, or unfair to children in certain contexts. This Article argues that the use of imaginary cartoon characters, fantasy worlds, celebrity endorsements, special effects, extraneous footage and props, disclaimers that children do not understand, and the use of puffery—exaggerated, boastful statements that …

Double Trouble: Competing Federal And State Approaches To Regulating The New Technology Of Cloned Animal Foods, And Suggestions For The Future, B. George Walker

Journal of Technology Law & Policy

Several years ago, the FDA began examining whether or not eating cloned animal foods would be safe. They came to the conclusion that it would be safe, but ironically, in process of reaching this conclusion, the FDA study created so much rancor in the public that at least a dozen states and Congress introduced legislation to regulate cloned animal products by labeling cloned animal products. This Article argues that preemption of state legislation on this issue is preferable, but notes that there are a number of potential problems with the congressional legislation, particularly with regard to preemption of state regulation. …
