Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous group of inborn errors of immunity characterized by reduced serum concentrations of different immunoglobulin isotypes. CVID is the most prevalent symptomatic antibody deficiency with a broad range of infectious and non-infectious clinical manifestations. Various genetic and immunological defects are known to be involved in the pathogenesis of CVID. Monogenic defects account for the pathogenesis of about 20-50% of CVID patients, while a variety of cases do not have a defined genetic background. Deficiencies in molecules of B cell receptor signaling or other pathways involving B-cell development, activation, and proliferation could be associated with …
Deciphering Taxa-Function Relationships In Population-Level Studies Of Human Gut Microbiomes, Quang P. Nguyen
Deciphering Taxa-Function Relationships In Population-Level Studies Of Human Gut Microbiomes, Quang P. Nguyen
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The human gut microbiome is a complex and dynamic ecosystem, featuring a multitude of microbes all interacting with their hosts in an elaborate manner. Even though this exchange is often mediated through microbial metabolic and functional outputs, such as the production of certain metabolites, environmental exposures, and host lifestyle are highly influential in shaping the presence of microbial species irrespective of their individual roles. As such, a comprehensive understanding of the microbiome requires researchers to examine the relationship between taxonomic abundance and function simultaneously. Assessing microbial contributions to important ecosystem services can enable identification of robust functions supported by a …

Bone metastases are frequent complications of malignant melanoma leading to reduced quality of life and significant morbidity. Regulation of immune cells by the gut microbiome influences cancer progression, but the role of the microbiome in tumor growth in bone is unknown. Using intracardiac or intratibial injections of B16-F10 melanoma cells into mice, we showed that gut microbiome depletion by broad-spectrum antibiotics accelerated intraosseous tumor growth and osteolysis. Microbiome depletion blunted melanoma-induced expansion of intestinal NK cells and Th1 cells and their migration from the gut to tumor-bearing bones. Demonstrating the functional relevance of immune cell trafficking from the gut to …

Synthetic pesticides are excessively consumed to control crop pests but abundant use of chemicals may implicate the whole ecosystem badly in the end. Despite the growing concern, few natural products are commercialized for pest control whilst on-farm use of existing botanically-based pesticides remains a small, but growing, component of crop protection practice. The experiment was conducted to assess the potential trade-offs of using botanical extracts (Neem leaf extract, NLE, and Moringa leaf extract, MLE) along with synthetic insecticide, Confidor 200 SL, against Aphis gossypii Glover. Meanwhile, impact of these insecticides on natural enemies were also determined in the field experiment. …

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton
Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton
Dissertations
Compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are two inter-related concepts. Individuals in helping professions may occasionally face compassion fatigue from giving so much of themselves to others. Compassion fatigue has been studied in a variety of settings: medical, social work, nursing, law enforcement, and fire departments, to name a few. While some researchers have studied nurses, little published work has focused exclusively on nurses who care for specialty pediatric populations. Additionally, there is scant research on whether compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue are associated with patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of compassion satisfaction and …

Investigation and Findings: These recommendations are informed …
Evaluating The Potential Of Genotype And Feeding Strategy On Reducing Age At Slaughter In Dairy Beef Systems, Jamie O'Driscoll
Evaluating The Potential Of Genotype And Feeding Strategy On Reducing Age At Slaughter In Dairy Beef Systems, Jamie O'Driscoll
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Background
Agriculture is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland with enteric fermentation from ruminants accounting for 58% of Ireland’s methane emissions. Research has shown that beef cattle excrete on average, approximately 230g of methane per day, if the national slaughter age reduced by one month, methane output would reduce by over 12,000 tonnes of methane annually. Therefore, a reduction in age at slaughter will lessen the contribution of Irish agriculture to global emissions and enhance its social acceptance and competitiveness.
Aims
The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of reducing age at slaughter through …

Application Of Fructans-Degrading Lachancea Fermentati Fst5.1 As An Alternative To Baker’S Yeast In The Production Of A Low-Fodmap Whole Wheat Bread., Małgorzata Borowska
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
FODMAPs are a group of poorly absorbed dietary carbohydrates comprised of easily fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols. When consumed, they can exert gastrointestinal symptoms of pain, flatulence, or an irregular bowel movement in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome. Whole wheat bread is an excellent source of proteins, vitamins, polyphenols, and other nutrients, but its consumption is restricted in a low-FODMAP diet due to high fructans content. Although alternatives exist, these are primarily gluten-free, often inferior in terms of quality, nutritional profile, and consumer acceptance. Bioprocessing using microbial fermentation has a proven capacity to reduce FODMAPs in cereal products, but …

Evaluating 3d Printing As A Technology For Producing Dairy Snacks Based On Temperature-Controlled Rennet Induced Gelation Of Protein-Fortified Milk., Ricardo Uribe Alvarez
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
3D food printing (3DFP) has the potential to develop products with complex structures, personalised nutrition, and customised textures. However, only foods with suitable physicochemical or rheological properties are suitable for 3DFP to ensure a self-supported structure is printed. Milk proteins can form structured objects (i.e., cheese, yoghurt), and so are potential ingredients for 3DFP. This study aims to adapt the rennet gelation from the curdling process of cheese-making to produce 3D printed dairy snacks using milk protein isolate-fortified milk. It is well known that curdling of milk by rennet is temperature dependant; therefore, the rennet gelation properties (G' and G'') …

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Ruminant meats contain functional lipids including fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFA), diglycerides (DG), monoacetyldiglycerides (MAcDG) and medium chain triglycerides (McTG) whose consumption in the normal diet can confer benefits for consumer health. However, very little is known concerning how meat processing techniques such as marination and grilling affect the quantity and quality of these functional lipids in ruminant meats. We used ultra high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution accurate mass tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRAM-MS/MS) to show how grilling following marination with either India or Wheat ale unfiltered beer-based marinades affected the quantity and quality of these …
