Human-Polar Bear Interactions On The Northern Coast Of Alaska, Gwendolyn Quigley Aug 2022

Human-Polar Bear Interactions On The Northern Coast Of Alaska, Gwendolyn Quigley

Biological Sciences

Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are sea ice-dependent marine mammals that, due to reductions in sea ice extent in the southern Beaufort Sea, are increasing their time spent on shore. Simultaneously, the anthropogenic footprint on the northern coast of Alaska is growing. As a result, human-polar bear interactions in this region are increasing. These interactions have the potential to be dangerous for humans, harmful to polar bears, and, therefore, require deliberate management. In this thesis, I examined two study systems that lacked the depth of knowledge necessary to craft defensible management plans. My research generated information regarding human-polar bear interactions that …

Physiological Regulation Of Annual Life History Events In Adult Female Weddell Seals, Amy Lorraine Kirkham Aug 2022

Physiological Regulation Of Annual Life History Events In Adult Female Weddell Seals, Amy Lorraine Kirkham

Fisheries

Predicting the impacts of environmental changes on animal populations requires a comprehensive understanding of the life history and physiological ecology of organisms in the wild, including the precise timing and regulation of annual biological events. In this dissertation, I assess how intrinsic factors including serum hormone concentrations and nutritional status relate to the critical annual events of reproduction, seasonal foraging, and pelage molt in an Antarctic marine predator, the Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii). A large component of these assessments are comparisons between female Weddell seals that pupped in the current season (postpartum females) and females that have pupped in the …

Objective. There is insufficient evidence to generate skin cancer screening guidelines at the population level, resulting in arbitrary variation in patient selection for screening skin examinations. This study was aimed at developing an easy-to-use predictive model of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) risk on screening total body skin examination (TBSE).

Methods. This epidemiologic assessment utilized data from a prospective, multicenter international study from primarily academic outpatient dermatology clinics. Potential predictors of NMSC on screening TBSE were identified and used to generate a multivariable model that was converted into a point-based scoring system. The performance characteristics of the model were validated in …

Maternal asthma status, prenatal exposures, and infant gut microbiota perturbation are associated with heightened risk of atopy and asthma risk in childhood, observations hypothetically linked by intergenerational microbial transmission. Using maternal vaginal (n = 184) and paired infant stool (n = 172) samples, we identify four compositionally and functionally distinct Lactobacillus-dominated vaginal microbiota clusters (VCs) that relate to prenatal maternal health and exposures and infant serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) status at 1 year. Variance in bacteria shared between mother and infant pairs relate to VCs, maternal allergy/asthma status, and infant IgE levels. Heritable bacterial gene pathways associated with infant IgE …

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most aggressive cancers and is primarily treated with platinum-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Some ESCCs respond well to NAC. However, biomarkers to predict NAC sensitivity and their response mechanism in ESCC remain unclear. We perform whole-genome sequencing and RNA sequencing analysis of 141 ESCC biopsy specimens before NAC treatment to generate a machine-learning-based diagnostic model to predict NAC reactivity in ESCC and analyzed the association between immunogenomic features and NAC response. Neutrophil infiltration may play an important role in ESCC response to NAC. We also demonstrate that specific copy-number alterations and copy-number …

A One Health Approach: Addressing The Overuse Of Antibiotics In Agriculture, Abby Erin Anderson Aug 2022

A One Health Approach: Addressing The Overuse Of Antibiotics In Agriculture, Abby Erin Anderson

Master's Projects and Capstones

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as one of the leading public health threats of the 21st century (Naghavi, 2022). AMR occurs due to an evolution of bacteria, making treatments of bacterial infections less effective (Naghavi, 2022). In recent years, several publications began identifying a linkage between antibiotic use in agriculture to humans. Roughly 70% of all antibiotics in the United States are being used in animal feed (Cable, 2018). More than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistance infections occur in the United States every year- which results in roughly 35,000 deaths (CDC, 2019). A comprehensive analysis estimated nearly 1.27 million deaths globally …

Elucidating Factors Affecting Cercosporin Production In Cercospora Leaf Blight Of Soybean To Develop Better Tools For Disease Management, Maria Izabel Costa De Novaes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Fungal toxins are pathogenicity/virulence factors for many plant diseases, including Cercospora leaf blight (CLB) of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). The pathogen, Cercospora cf. flagellaris, produces a perylenequinone toxin, cercosporin, which is activated by light to produce damaging reactive oxygen species. To identify novel solutions for CLB management, we studied factors that may impact the biology of cercoporin: fungal lipid droplets (LDs) and mineral and trace element composition (ionome) of the host. Furthermore, since artificial inoculation with the pathogen has been challenging, we also explored the usefulness of a previously developed cercosporin-based assay to study disease resistance. LDs …

Development Of A Medication Reconciliation Policy In Outpatient Mental Health Facility, Karen E. Webster Aug 2022

Development Of A Medication Reconciliation Policy In Outpatient Mental Health Facility, Karen E. Webster

DNP and Student Works

Adverse drug events and medication discrepancies are patient safety challenges for patients and healthcare professionals. Medication errors result in approximately 7000 deaths annually, and adverse drug events harm 1.5 billion people and cost $3.5 billion annually (Dunham & Makoul, 2008). Medication reconciliation can significantly decrease medication errors. "It involves obtaining, verifying and documenting the patient's current medicines and comparing to their medication orders and the patient's condition to identify and resolve any discrepancies" (Duguid, 2012, p. 15). The deliberate time taken to complete medication reconciliation plays a significant role in patient care, along with increasing the quality of care provided. …

Understanding Control Of Metabolite Dynamics And Heterogeneity, Christopher John Hartline Aug 2022

Understanding Control Of Metabolite Dynamics And Heterogeneity, Christopher John Hartline

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Microbes live in complex and continually changing environments. Rapid shifts in nutrient availability are a common challenge for microbes, and cause changes in intracellular metabolite levels. Microbial response to dynamic environments requires coordination of multiple levels of cellular machinery including gene expression and metabolite concentrations. This coordination is achieved through metabolic control systems, which sense metabolite concentrations and direct cellular activity in response. Several reoccurring control architectures are found throughout diverse metabolic systems, which suggests underlying evolutionary advantages for using these control systems to coordinate metabolism. One common, yet understudied, control architecture is the positive feedback metabolite uptake loop, which …
