Affecting Opioid Use Disorder Treatment Retention

by

Fernand A. De Los Reyes

Advisor: Martha Velasco-Whetsell

Increasing mortality from opioid overdose and low treatment engagement are significant public health concerns. Along with increasing health care and criminal justice enforcement costs, there is an urgent need to study the factors associated with treatment retention in opioid use disorder. The study investigated the relative impact of the biomarker cholesterol on treatment retention in an opioid treatment program (OTP) clinic. Further, it examined the medical comorbidities, treatment, and socio-demographic variables that impact opioid use disorder treatment retention. This …

Dietary Regulation Of Silent Synapses In The Dorsolateral Striatum, Allison M. Meyers Sep 2022

Dietary Regulation Of Silent Synapses In The Dorsolateral Striatum, Allison M. Meyers

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Obesity and drugs of abuse share overlapping neural circuits and behaviors. Cravings for drugs of abuse increase during abstinence, a phenomenon known as incubation. In obesity, increased craving is observed in individuals during dieting. Diets often fail, with return to- or increase above- original weight. The extent to which this reflects an incubation phenomenon has not been carefully examined. One mechanism underlying incubation is the reemergence of a developmental mechanism called silent synapses. Silent synapses are 'temporary' synapses that are important for remodeling brain circuits. They are prevalent during early development but largely disappear by adulthood. Drugs of abuse increase …

A Quantitative Evaluation Of Explainable Ai Methods Using The Depth Of Decision Tree, Nizar Abdulaziz Mahyoub Ahmed, Adi̇l Alpkoçak Sep 2022

A Quantitative Evaluation Of Explainable Ai Methods Using The Depth Of Decision Tree, Nizar Abdulaziz Mahyoub Ahmed, Adi̇l Alpkoçak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

It is necessary to develop an explainable model to clarify how and why a medical model makes a particular decision. Local posthoc explainable AI (XAI) techniques, such as SHAP and LIME, interpret classification system predictions by displaying the most important features and rules underlying any prediction locally. Therefore, in order to compare two or more XAI methods, they must first be evaluated qualitatively or quantitatively. This paper proposes quantitative XAI evaluation metrics that are not based on biased and subjective human judgment. On the other hand, it is dependent on the depth of the decision tree (DT) to automatically and …

Animal Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD), one of the most common and infectious diseases in the beef industry, is associated with the respiratory microbiome and stressors of transportation. The impacts of the bovine respiratory microbiota on health and disease across different geographic locations and sampling niches are poorly understood, resulting in difficult identification of BRD causes. In this study, we explored the effects of geography and niches on the bovine respiratory microbiome and its function by re-analyzing published metagenomic datasets and estimated the main opportunistic pathogens that changed after transportation. The results showed that diversity, composition, structure, and function of the bovine …

International Law, African Courts, Patriarchal Inheritance Systems And Women's Rights, John Mukum Mbaku Sep 2022

International Law, African Courts, Patriarchal Inheritance Systems And Women's Rights, John Mukum Mbaku

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

In virtually all countries in Africa, there exist various cultural, social, political, and legal factors that contribute to women's inability to have access to land, as well as negatively impact their inheritance rights. One of the most important reasons why so many women in Africa do not have access to land or official land titles is that they live in communities which have customary laws and traditional practices that deny them the right to inheritance. In several African countries, customary laws deny the girl child the right to inherit her deceased father's estate and the widow the right to inherit …

Covid-19 Mindfulness Toolkit: A 4-Week Course For Adult Working Professionals, Ilene Gregorian

Mindfulness Studies Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented in terms of size and scale, and has impacted virtually every facet of life across the world over the past two and a half years. For adult working professionals, it has presented enormous challenges including work-from-home mandates, video conferencing, homeschooling, unplanned childcare, financial instability, and prolonged uncertainty leading to increased fear, stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Other work on this topic reports that even a short program in mindfulness can help adult working professionals counteract the negative effects of chronic stress and trauma. This study argues that my proposed program with four specific mindfulness practices entitled …

Exposure To Mindfulness Basics Through Existing Habits: A Brief 5-Week Curriculum For Exercisers, Meredith Tedford Sep 2022

Exposure To Mindfulness Basics Through Existing Habits: A Brief 5-Week Curriculum For Exercisers, Meredith Tedford

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This thesis explores the mind-body connection inherent in both physical exercise and mindfulness and how habit-formation can play a key role in introducing regular exercisers to the benefits of mindful practice. New habits are established when they are linked to established daily routines through small modifications to existing patterns of behavior, but this runs counter to how traditional mindfulness practice is typically taught. By providing exercisers with a limited time-commitment and fully integrated opportunity to learn and practice both formal and informal practice as part of weekly exercise, that practice is more likely to be durable. The approach presented here …

Impacts Of Fertility On Physiological Stress, Photosynthetic Activity, And Crop Development In Salanova Lettuce, Sarah I. Miller Sep 2022

Impacts Of Fertility On Physiological Stress, Photosynthetic Activity, And Crop Development In Salanova Lettuce, Sarah I. Miller

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

The agricultural industry is one of the main drivers of soil degradation due to conventional crop production methods and overuse of soil which results in accelerated erosion, loss of soil fertility, acidification, and salinization (Lal, 2015). Loss of soil fertility from degradation can be detrimental to crop production as plants grown under nutrient limited conditions show signs of physiological stress and reduced photosynthetic rates leading to reduced yields (Zangani et al., 2021). Organic crop production and fertilizers are viable alternatives to conventional methods as they improve soil fertility and the physiological and biological properties of soil (Ilahi et al., 2021). …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Research on well-being has exploded in recent years to more than 55,000 relevant publications annually, making it difficult for psychologists—including key communicators such as textbook authors—to stay current with this field. Moreover, well-being is a daily concern among policymakers and members of the general public. Well-being science is relevant to the lives of students—illustrating the diverse methods used in the behavioral sciences, presenting highly replicated findings, and demonstrating the diversity of individuals and cultures. Therefore, in this article, we present eight major findings that teachers and authors should seriously consider in their coverage of this field. These topics include processes …

We examined associations of micro-scale environment attributes (e.g., sidewalks, street crossings) with three physical activity (PA) measures among Hispanic/Latino adults (n = 1776) living in San Diego County, CA. Systematic observation was used to quantify micro-scale environment attributes near each participant's home. Total PA was assessed with accelerometers, and PA for transportation and recreation were assessed by validated self-report. Although several statistically significant interactions between individual and neighborhood characteristics were identified, there was little evidence micro-scale attributes were related to PA. An important limitation was restricted environmental variability for this sample which lived in a small area of a single …

A Qualitative Descriptive Study On Re-Assessing The Mental Certification By Faa For Future Pilots, Kaung Z. Min

Student Works

Mental illness becomes one of the main problems that most pilots do not usually address. It is not because pilots do not have the courage or are open enough to talk with someone, but because the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) forces them to hide from mental depression. Most of the time, the pilots are not willing to declare such illnesses as they fear losing their job; simultaneously, the Federal Aviation Agencies across the world require pilots to be in peat health, including their mental condition, to operate the aircraft. While it can be said that the passengers’ and crews’ safety …

Dietary Approaches To The Treatment Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dhira Patel Sep 2022

Dietary Approaches To The Treatment Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dhira Patel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This chapter reviews the literature surrounding autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their relation to gastrointestinal (GI), behavioral, neurological, and immunological functioning. Individuals with ASDs often have poor GI health, including bowel motility issues, autoimmune and/or other adverse responses to certain foods, and lack of necessary nutrient absorption. These issues may be caused or exacerbated by restrictive behavioral patterns (e.g., preference for sweet and salty foods and/or refusal of healthy foods). Those individuals with GI issues tend to demonstrate more behavioral deficits (e.g., irritability, agitation, hyperactivity) and also tend to have an imbalance in overall gut microbiome composition, thus corroborating several …

Insufficient Sleep And Onset Of Coronary Artery Disease, Pooja S. Raghani Sep 2022

Insufficient Sleep And Onset Of Coronary Artery Disease, Pooja S. Raghani

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Coronary artery disease (CAD), a consequence of coronary atherosclerosis, is the most common form of cardiovascular disease. Recent research suggests that compared to individuals with normal sleep duration, those with insufficient sleep, defined as short sleep duration (i.e., less than 6 hours per 24-hour period) have a 79% higher risk of developing coronary artery disease. In this review, selected physiological factors (including vascular inflammation, sympathetic overactivity, and increases in blood pressure), behavioral factors (including sedentary behavior and dietary choices), psychological factors (including hostility, fatigue, and major depressive disorder/depressive affect), and sociocultural factors (including race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and health literacy) were …

Dietary Fatty Acids And The Brain: Mechanisms Behind Neurodegeneration And Neuroprotection, Bianca Kdeiss

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The impact of dietary fat intake on cognitive function has generated growing interest as the incidence of neurodegenerative disorders continues to increase. No known cures for neurodegenerative disorders exist at this time and available pharmacological treatments are limited in their efficacy. As such, prevention and early detection have been emphasized, particularly in the context of modifiable lifestyle factors, such as diet. Despite a recognized association between dietary fat intake and cognition, limited research exists delineating the impact of different types of fat on cognitive function. In this review, research examining the association between cognition and specific dietary fatty acids—such as …

The Community Resiliency Model In Health Decision-Making, Michelle Ngo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This doctoral project reviews the literature to support the utilization of the Community Resilience Model (CRM) for health-related decision making, such as health behavior change and medication adherence. Research has shown that decision-making under significant stress can lead to making less advantageous choices, as the nervous system becomes dysregulated. The evidence in this literature review suggests that self-regulation using skills in the CRM Model can increase one’s ability to effectively making decisions.
