Chronic Venous Insufficiency With Emphasis On The Geriatric Population., Harvey N. Mayrovitz, Kawaiola C. Aoki, Jessica Colon
HPD Articles
The underpinning of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is valvular dysfunction, which manifests on a spectrum depending on the severity of insufficiency and duration of the disease. The mainstay of treatment relies on compression therapy of a proper type and intensity. In older adults, special consideration must be taken during the patient encounter to account for age-related factors. This review discusses the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and mimicking of CVI, focusing mainly on older adults. The epidemiology, risk factors, disease burden, and grave complications -- such as thrombosis and ulceration, are reviewed. The physiological impacts of CVI are described, providing the background …

Heavy Metals Concentration In Commercial Rice Available At Erbil City Markets, Iraq And Soaking Effects, Faris Zaidan Jarjees, Dalshad Azeez Darwesh
Baghdad Science Journal
Heavy metal (HM) pollution has long been a significant source of environmental deterioration and a problem for the safety of food. Iraqis prefer rice over any other food, and since heavy metals have a direct impact on health, their traces in rice have drawn particular attention. Before cooking rice, it is usual in Iraq to wash and soak it. Some 55 varieties of imported and local rice were sampled from Erbil city markets in 2022 with the aim of determining the concentration of As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb before and after soaking. Standard procedure of acid digestions was applied …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Postnatal care is an important part of maternal and neonatal care, and life-threatening complications can occur during the postpartum period. Empirical information on the level of postpartum care services is generally scarce in Nepal. Key elements of postpartum care during the fourth stage of labor include providing proper nutrition, promoting breastfeeding, and helping the mother manage any physical discomforts or challenges that may arise. This study investigated the level of postpartum care services delivered during the fourth stage of labor in a tertiary-level hospital in the Chitwan district of Nepal. A descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted among 148 women …

Oral Microbial Communities In Children, Caregivers, And Associations With Salivary Biomeasures And Environmental Tobacco Smoke Exposure, Jason A. Rothman, Jenna L. Riis, Katrina R. Hamilton, Clancy Blair, Douglas A. Granger, Katrine Katrine Whiteson
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Human oral microbial communities are diverse, with implications for oral and systemic health. Oral microbial communities change over time; thus, it is important to understand how healthy versus dysbiotic oral microbiomes differ, especially within and between families. There is also a need to understand how the oral microbiome composition is changed within an individual including by factors such as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure, metabolic regulation, inflammation, and antioxidant potential. Using archived saliva samples collected from caregivers and children during a 90-month follow-up assessment in a longitudinal study of child development in the context of rural poverty, we used 16S …

The Sars-Cov-2 virus has had a particularly intense impact on the meatpacking industry in the United States. In this paper I provide a brief introduction to the social, economic, and political realities that lead to mass deaths of meatpacking workers from COVID, and the impact of a consolidated meatpacking system on disease mitigation. These workers are considered expendable due to a lack of power.
Threats To School Safety: Examining Levels Of Community Violence And Its Relation To School-Related Threats, Dorie Ross
Threats To School Safety: Examining Levels Of Community Violence And Its Relation To School-Related Threats, Dorie Ross
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite significant media attention provided to school-based acts of violence, these tragic incidents are relatively rare across school environments, leading to increasing challenges in identifying students who may pose a threat. Previous approaches to school discipline, including policies such as zero tolerance, resulted in significant racial disparities among students who received disciplinary consequences inconsistent with the severity of their behaviors or threats. Alternatively, a relatively recent approach that emerged following a series of school shootings in the 1990s was school threat assessment, which focuses on prevention rather than prediction. While it is important to determine students who may pose a …

Exploring The Fifth Quarter: An Enquiry Into Offal Eating In Contemporary Irish Food Culture, Its History, And Its Future, Niall Toner
Dissertations
Animal offal and organ meats seem to have all but disappeared from domestic cuisine in Ireland, despite the recent renaissance in the country’s food culture. This thesis has examined the extent and nature of the consumption of these comestibles in contemporary Irish food culture, and the perceived decline in offal’s popularity in Ireland in the past fifty years. It also sought to discover whether offal and organ meats might have a place in the future of our cuisine, and whether the consumption of more offal and organ meats in Ireland might contribute towards a more sustainable food production system, and …

Cystic kidney disease is a leading cause of morbidity in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). We characterize the misregulated metabolic pathways using cell lines, a TSC mouse model, and human kidney sections. Our study reveals a substantial perturbation in the arginine biosynthesis pathway in TSC models with overexpression of argininosuccinate synthetase 1 (ASS1). The rise in ASS1 expression is dependent on the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activity. Arginine depletion prevents mTORC1 hyperactivation and cell cycle progression and averts cystogenic signaling overexpression of c-Myc and P65. Accordingly, an arginine-depleted diet substantially reduces the TSC cystic load in …

Design Prototyping For Public Technological Solutions As A Social Learning Practice For Policymaking, Francesco Leoni, Francesco Noera
Design Prototyping For Public Technological Solutions As A Social Learning Practice For Policymaking, Francesco Leoni, Francesco Noera
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This theoretical article explores how design prototyping for technological solutions with public and social dimensions (e.g., data-centric public services) might represent a practice that fosters social learning for policymaking. The paper contributes to two contemporary strands of design research: i) design prototyping in public service innovation processes as a means for designing with institutional arrangements; ii) the role and object of design prototyping in “design for policy”. The central thesis is that, through prototyping, the designing of public technological solutions could become a source of policy knowledge and a driver of policy learning. Therefore, the contribution of designers and design …

Designing Matter Across Scales With Microorganisms: The Mmmm (Micro-Mezzo-Macro-Meta) Approach, Emma Sicher, Seçil Uğur Yavuz, Nitzan Cohen
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Biodesign is a growing discipline focusing on material futures, alternative production methods and more interdependent solutions with Nature. In particular, it fosters designers to interact with other microorganisms and living matter for the development of materials and potential applications often based on material tinkering and material-driven design methods (MDD). The interweaving of human and other- than-human agencies raises multiple questions and characterizes levels of complexity throughout the design process. The purpose of this article is to elaborate a posteriori on practice-based research to support biodesigners in their interdisciplinary practices. First, it proposes "mattertypes" as a comprehensive term that describes material …

Department of Medical Oncology Posters
Research Objective
In patients with advanced cancer, interprofessional, non hospital-based care models of palliative care or Supportive Oncology (SO) have been shown in some studies to reduce symptom severity, hospital admissions, and healthcare costs. However, there is little consistency in the composition of SO programs or the degree of integration of social work, nutrition counseling, patient navigation, and nursing care services. There is limited research on quality of care and cost outcomes and current fee-for-service models do not cover the high costs of these non-billable services. We examine the impact of Interprofessional SO care on utilization and medical costs in …
First In Time: The Place Of Tribes In Governing The Colorado River System, Matthew Mckinney, Jay Weiner, Daryl Vigil
First In Time: The Place Of Tribes In Governing The Colorado River System, Matthew Mckinney, Jay Weiner, Daryl Vigil
Natural Resources Journal
Native Americans are the first inhabitants of the Colorado River Basin and have relied on its water and other resources since time immemorial. However, tribes were not involved in the shaping the Colorado River Compact and its governing institutions, and they have faced uphill battles to secure, protect, and develop their water rights—including the ability to acquire access to clean water for their members. This article begins by explaining the historic role of tribes in governing the Colorado River system. It then reviews ongoing efforts to better integrate tribal needs, interests, and priorities into management decisions, and to support opportunities …

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
Background
To explore the role of children's residential environment on opioid prescribing patterns in a predominantly Latinx sample.
Methods
We connected geocoded data from electronic medical records in a diverse sample of pediatric patients to neighborhood environments constructed using latent profile modeling techniques. We then estimated a series of multilevel models to determine whether opioid prescribing patterns vary by residential context.
Results
A stepwise pattern exists between neighborhood disadvantage and pediatric opioid prescription patterns, such that higher levels of disadvantage associate with a greater likelihood of opioid prescription, independent of the patient's individual profile.
Conclusion
In a largely Latinx sample …
