Nutrient Optimization For Vegetable Production Under Decoupled Aquaponics Using Brackish Water, Salma Walid Hany Ahmed Abdelfattah
Theses and Dissertations
As the world moves to more sustainable agriculture methods in the agribusiness industry, decoupled aquaponics is recognized as one of the newest techniques currently being utilized to achieve more local food security. As the topic is still freshly new within the industry, a finite number of publications and studies have been made that address the topic hands-on with its many variables. Subsequently, in this paper, an experiment was conducted to assess the most optimized production conditions of both lacinato kale (Brassica oleracea var.palmifolia) and Swiss chard Bright Light (Beta vulgaris ssp. Cicla var. flavescens) plants through the utilization of a …
Development And Characterization Of The Cellular Circadian Clock Of C2c12 Cells, Ali Akbari Beni
Development And Characterization Of The Cellular Circadian Clock Of C2c12 Cells, Ali Akbari Beni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract Circadian rhythms in mammalian physiology and behavior are generated through coherent rhythmic crosstalk between the central clock in the brain and peripheral clocks throughout the organs in our body. The molecular clocks responsible for these intrinsic rhythmic oscillations work based on interlocked transcription/translation feedback loops, which work together with various environmental and metabolic cues to produce internal 24-hour timing. This project established a stable cellular circadian clock model using the C2C12 cell line. This genetically tractable model contains an integrated luciferase reporter, which enables continuous luminescence recording of each circadian cycle. In order to examine this cellular circadian model, …
Differential Levels Of Nutrients And Heavy Metals In Tilapia Collected From Drains In Egypt, Emily Burch
Differential Levels Of Nutrients And Heavy Metals In Tilapia Collected From Drains In Egypt, Emily Burch
Theses and Dissertations
Tilapia is one of the most widely cultivated and consumed fish globally. In terms of human health, tilapia is an excellent source of protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and micronutrients. Tilapia and other aquatic species have become increasingly susceptible to contamination, as anthropogenic activities have been increasing around the world. Anthropogenetic activities often introduce high levels of contaminants, including heavy metals, into the marine environment. These contaminants often do not biodegrade, and they are absorbed by aquatic species. Contaminants can bioaccumulate and proceed in biomagnification up the fish food chain putting consumers at an increased risk of exposure. Heavy metals can …

International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences
Social challenges are constantly evolving and organizations need to adapt timely improvisations to stabilize the growth amidst these presenting challenges. The word “social challenges” itself is so varied in its representation, that it circumscribes various “planned” and “forced” challenges and threats that innately has the potential to destabilize the more so stable flow of processes. Educational institutions are expected to steer a variety of domains for a cumulative stable and progressive outcome. When the stakes at hand are so diverse and the challenges so intense, there is no landmark recipe that can be a single solution to all challenging situations …

The underpinning of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is valvular dysfunction, which manifests on a spectrum depending on the severity of insufficiency and duration of the disease. The mainstay of treatment relies on compression therapy of a proper type and intensity. In older adults, special consideration must be taken during the patient encounter to account for age-related factors. This review discusses the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and mimicking of CVI, focusing mainly on older adults. The epidemiology, risk factors, disease burden, and grave complications -- such as thrombosis and ulceration, are reviewed. The physiological impacts of CVI are described, providing the background …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Human oral microbial communities are diverse, with implications for oral and systemic health. Oral microbial communities change over time; thus, it is important to understand how healthy versus dysbiotic oral microbiomes differ, especially within and between families. There is also a need to understand how the oral microbiome composition is changed within an individual including by factors such as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure, metabolic regulation, inflammation, and antioxidant potential. Using archived saliva samples collected from caregivers and children during a 90-month follow-up assessment in a longitudinal study of child development in the context of rural poverty, we used 16S …

Threats To School Safety: Examining Levels Of Community Violence And Its Relation To School-Related Threats, Dorie Ross
Threats To School Safety: Examining Levels Of Community Violence And Its Relation To School-Related Threats, Dorie Ross
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite significant media attention provided to school-based acts of violence, these tragic incidents are relatively rare across school environments, leading to increasing challenges in identifying students who may pose a threat. Previous approaches to school discipline, including policies such as zero tolerance, resulted in significant racial disparities among students who received disciplinary consequences inconsistent with the severity of their behaviors or threats. Alternatively, a relatively recent approach that emerged following a series of school shootings in the 1990s was school threat assessment, which focuses on prevention rather than prediction. While it is important to determine students who may pose a …

Cystic kidney disease is a leading cause of morbidity in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). We characterize the misregulated metabolic pathways using cell lines, a TSC mouse model, and human kidney sections. Our study reveals a substantial perturbation in the arginine biosynthesis pathway in TSC models with overexpression of argininosuccinate synthetase 1 (ASS1). The rise in ASS1 expression is dependent on the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activity. Arginine depletion prevents mTORC1 hyperactivation and cell cycle progression and averts cystogenic signaling overexpression of c-Myc and P65. Accordingly, an arginine-depleted diet substantially reduces the TSC cystic load in …

Design Prototyping For Public Technological Solutions As A Social Learning Practice For Policymaking, Francesco Leoni, Francesco Noera
Design Prototyping For Public Technological Solutions As A Social Learning Practice For Policymaking, Francesco Leoni, Francesco Noera
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This theoretical article explores how design prototyping for technological solutions with public and social dimensions (e.g., data-centric public services) might represent a practice that fosters social learning for policymaking. The paper contributes to two contemporary strands of design research: i) design prototyping in public service innovation processes as a means for designing with institutional arrangements; ii) the role and object of design prototyping in “design for policy”. The central thesis is that, through prototyping, the designing of public technological solutions could become a source of policy knowledge and a driver of policy learning. Therefore, the contribution of designers and design …

Designing Matter Across Scales With Microorganisms: The Mmmm (Micro-Mezzo-Macro-Meta) Approach, Emma Sicher, Seçil Uğur Yavuz, Nitzan Cohen
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Biodesign is a growing discipline focusing on material futures, alternative production methods and more interdependent solutions with Nature. In particular, it fosters designers to interact with other microorganisms and living matter for the development of materials and potential applications often based on material tinkering and material-driven design methods (MDD). The interweaving of human and other- than-human agencies raises multiple questions and characterizes levels of complexity throughout the design process. The purpose of this article is to elaborate a posteriori on practice-based research to support biodesigners in their interdisciplinary practices. First, it proposes "mattertypes" as a comprehensive term that describes material …
