Hypoglycemia is concerning for neurological complications in infants and children. Determining the cause of hypoglycemia is essential in providing appropriate treatment. Hyperinsulinism and growth hormone deficiency are known causes of hypoglycemia but are not commonly found together. We report a 4-month-old boy who presented with severe hypoglycemia and was found to have both hyperinsulinism and growth hormone deficiency. Treatment with both recombinant human growth hormone and diazoxide led to blood glucose normalization. Subsequently, he was found to have a genetic diagnosis of 20p11.22p11.21 deletion. 20p11 deletions have been associated with hypopituitarism, most commonly seen in growth hormone deficiency causing hypoglycemia. …

Worldwide, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest burden of global neonatal mortality (43%) and neonatal mortality rate (NMR): 27 deaths per 1,000 live births. The WHO recognizes palliative care (PC) as an integral, yet underutilized, component of perinatal care for pregnancies at risk of stillbirth or early neonatal death, and for neonates with severe prematurity, birth trauma or congenital anomalies. Despite bearing a disproportionate burden of neonatal mortality, many strategies to care for dying newborns and support their families employed in high-income countries (HICs) are not available in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). Many institutions and professional societies in LMICs lack guidelines or …
Prevalence Of Iron Deficiency In Patients With Inherited Bleeding Disorders, Thomas Cochran, Brian R. Lee, Shannon L. Carpenter
Prevalence Of Iron Deficiency In Patients With Inherited Bleeding Disorders, Thomas Cochran, Brian R. Lee, Shannon L. Carpenter

Systemic Review Of Clot Retraction Modulators, Alaina Guilbeau, Rinku Majumder
School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications
Through a process termed clot retraction, platelets cause thrombi to shrink and become more stable. After platelets are activated via inside-out signaling, glycoprotein αIIbβIII binds to fibrinogen and initiates a cascade of intracellular signaling that ends in actin remodeling, which causes the platelet to change its shape. Clot retraction is also important for wound healing. Although the detailed molecular biology of clot retraction is only partially understood, various substances and physiological conditions modulate clot retraction. In this review, we describe some of the current literature pertaining to clot retraction modulators. In addition, we discuss compounds from Cudrania trucuspidata, Arctium lappa, …

Our objective was to examine serum ferritin trends after conversion to permanent vascular access (PVA) among children who started hemodialysis (HD) using tunneled cuffed catheters (TCC). Retrospective chart reviews were completed on 98 subjects from 20 pediatric HD centers. Serum ferritin levels were collected at the creation of PVA and for two years thereafter. There were 11 (11%) arteriovenous grafts (AVG) and 87 (89%) arteriovenous fistulae (AVF). Their mean TCC use was 10.4 ± 17.3 months. Serum ferritin at PVA creation was elevated at 562.64 ± 492.34 ng/mL, increased to 753.84 ± 561.54 ng/mL (p = < 0.001) in the first year and remained at 759.60 ± 528.11 ng/mL in the second year (p = 0.004). The serum ferritin levels did not show a statistically significant linear association with respective serum hematocrit values. In a multiple linear regression model, there were three predictors of serum ferritin during the first year of follow-up: steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome as primary etiology (p = 0.035), being from a center that enrolled >10 cases (p = …

By knowing the nutritional status of a plant, one can better manage and use it for ethnobotanical purposes. Various nutrients are accumulated as osmotica in plants of stressful environments. The type and quantity of nutrients present in plants also determine the effectivity of medicine obtained from that plant. Hence, practical utilization of these plants as food or medicines needs to explore the exact nature and presence of the nutrient ions for discrimination of their toxic or medicinal nature. In the present study, some important nutrients in a number of xerophytic plants from Cholistan desert of Pakistan were quantified. Leave, stem …

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Leadership is a management tool to direct effective achievement of goals. Historical investigation can provide a valuable lens for the study of leadership styles. To that end, this study examines the disparate approaches of Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott as they raced to be the first explorer to reach the South Pole. The objective of this study is to analyze the leadership techniques used in these expeditions, and to determine how they shaped the outcome of each. The process of tacit knowledge and experience coalesce and foster both leadership and action that is not only communication-oriented and value-driven, but also …

Inviting Everyone To The Aca (Risk) Pool Party: Using Advanceable, Income-Based Tax Credits To Subsidize Purchases, Mary Leto Pareja
Florida Tax Review
The year 2014 marked the first opportunity for American taxpayers to receive subsidized health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) new Premium Tax Credit (PTC). About 4.8 million people enrolled in an ACA plan in 2014 were eligible, and nearly 97% of these claimants were approved for advance payments of the PTC. The year 2015 marked the first tax return where taxpayers received the unpleasant surprise that they must repay excess credits due to reconciliation. Advance PTC estimates turned out to be highly inaccurate, with only 8% of claimants receiving accurate advance payments. A majority, 51%, had to repay …

Poor Support/Rich Support: (Re)Viewing The American Social Welfare State, Wendy A. Bach
Florida Tax Review
Since at least the 1970s a variety of scholars have redefined the U.S. social welfare state to include not only traditional benefit programs (for example, Food Stamps and Social Security) but also a variety of tax benefits that are “hidden” or “submerged” forms of “welfare for the wealthy.” Including these benefits in the overall picture of U.S. social welfare provision reveals a system that is both larger in size than popularly believed and that, in addition to providing some support for the poor, distributes significant benefits regressively to households with substantial wealth. Although a variety of scholars and policy analysts …

Introduction. Chest tube placement is widely practiced; most medical doctors can do this safely. However, releasing the chest tube can be a painful and challenging experience for the patient. A novel method has been developed with a new suture material that does not need to be knotted. The Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) provides objective and subjective scar assessment. This study aimed to compare the scars associated with chest tube release between the conventional and knotless methods.
Methods. The study was a controlled trial in which patients were divided into two groups. The scar assessment was …

Effect Of Everolimus On The Liver Function Of Children Receiving Liver Transplant With Chronic Rejection: An Evidence–Based Case Report, Adi Nd Puruboyo, Tri H. Rahayatri, Marini Stephanie
The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
Introduction. Chronic rejection, a complication after pediatric living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), is challenging to treat as management generally requires retransplantation. However, retransplantation is avoided because of rejection risks, longer operating time, higher mortality, and lower survival rates. Immunosuppressant therapy has potential as an option for nonsurgical treatment. Everolimus, a mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors (mTOR inhibitors), is a well-known immunosuppressant in treating chronic rejection of LDLT. However, studies in the pediatric field remain minimum.
Method. The discussion was based on evidence found from studies found through a systematic literature search. These three studies showed permanent liver function improvement after …
Resource Recovery From Crew Metabolic Wastes In Lunar And Martian Habitats: Reuse Of Effluent From An Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor Treating Fecal Organic Matter As Fertilizer Source For Plants, Alexandra A. Smith
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As humans set their sights on exploration of the Moon and Mars human focused challenges like providing potable water, supplying nutritious food to the astronaut crew, and managing their waste present themselves. There are no readily available resources on the Moon and Mars, therefore nothing should be considered unusable including the organic wastes (i.e., feces and urine) produced by the crew. Fecal matter is not currently recycled and is treated as solid waste. After collection, it is discarded out of the International Space Station where it is incinerated upon re-entry. This approach will not work on the Moon’s surface. There …

Background
Premature age-related brain changes may be influenced by physical health factors. Lower socioeconomic status (SES) is often associated with poorer physical health. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between SES and premature brain aging. Methods
Brain age was estimated from T1-weighted images using BrainAgeR in 217 participants from the ABC@UofSC Repository. The difference between brain and chronological age (BrainGAP) was calculated. Multiple regression models were used to predict BrainGAP with age, SES, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension, sex, race, and education as predictors. SES was calculated from size-adjusted household income and the cost of living. …Students’ Knowledge Of And Attitudes Toward Dairy Production: A Survey Methodology Report, Heather Akin, Babatope Akinyemi, Julia Mcquillan, Tami Brown-Brandl

Numerous strategies have been suggested to reduce dependence on synthetic products, such as physical, microbial, and natural methods. Among the natural remedies, plant extracts have emerged as a popular option owing to their eco-friendly character, ease of degradation, and harmless nature to humans. In our study, we used the acetone and hexane extracts of Rhaphiolepis indica fruit to combat two fungal pathogens that were isolated from infected bean plants and showed root rot symptoms. The two pathogens were confirmed to be pathogenic by pathogenicity assays conducted in vivo. The morphological and molecular identification by ITS-region sequencing revealed that the two …

IMPORTANCE: SARS-CoV-2 infection can result in ongoing, relapsing, or new symptoms or other health effects after the acute phase of infection; termed post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), or long COVID. The characteristics, prevalence, trajectory and mechanisms of PASC are ill-defined. The objectives of the Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Multi-site Observational Study of PASC in Adults (RECOVER-Adult) are to: (1) characterize PASC prevalence; (2) characterize the symptoms, organ dysfunction, natural history, and distinct phenotypes of PASC; (3) identify demographic, social and clinical risk factors for PASC onset and recovery; and (4) define the biological mechanisms underlying PASC pathogenesis. …

Anaerobic Digestion Of Brewery Waste Including Spent Yeast And Hops, Dhanashree Rawalgaonkar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Florida is home to more than 300 craft breweries, that brew over a million barrels of beer annually. Brewing is an energy intensive process and produces large quantities of high strength waste including spent grains, yeast, hops, and high strength wastewater. Brewery wastewater, and spent yeast have high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations between 5000 mg/L – 10,000 mg/L, and 200,000 mg/L – 300,000 mg/L respectively. Brewery effluent wastewater is sent to Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs) which implement high surcharges based on the strength of brewery effluent (COD concentration). While some of the spent yeast and hops can be …

Evolution of antibiotic resistance is a world health crisis, fueled by new mutations. Drugs to slow mutagenesis could, as cotherapies, prolong the shelf-life of antibiotics, yet evolution-slowing drugs and drug targets have been underexplored and ineffective. Here, we used a network-based strategy to identify drugs that block hubs of fluoroquinolone antibiotic-induced mutagenesis. We identify a U.S. Food and Drug Administration- and European Medicines Agency-approved drug, dequalinium chloride (DEQ), that inhibits activation of the

Chronic illnesses are a global issue and therefore are a more researched topic around the world, especially if they are common among populations. Most of these illnesses require medications to maintain a good quality of life or even in some cases just to survive. In this study, we will be looking at those who meet the expectations of the latter requirement for prescriptions. More specifically, the illness Diabetes Mellitus and how the prices of insulin in the United States of America are forcing Americans to fast their rations of insulin that are covered by insurance. Risking their own lives with …

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. The effects of childhood overweight and obesity are devastating to the health and well-being of children now and throughout adulthood. The overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and more likely to develop non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer at a younger age.
Study Aim: The aim of the study is investigating the problem of overweight/obesity among secondary school students in Gaza Strip, Palestine.
Study design: The design of this study was cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical, …
The Manhattant: Identification, Natural History, And Nutritional Ecology Of A Recently Introduced Pest In New York City, Lasius Emarginatus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Samantha Kennett
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
New York City is one of the oldest and largest cities in North America, and it is a center for global trade and shipping. As such, it has also been the site of introduction for some of North America’s most damaging invasive pests, from chestnut blight to the Asian long-horned beetle. Despite these cautionary examples, there has been no formal research on a newly introduced ant species that was tentatively identified as a European ant species, Lasius cf. emarginatus. Since its discovery in 2011, L. cf. emarginatus has become among the most common urban ant species in New York …
