Predicted growth in world population will put unparalleled stress on the need for sustainable energy and global food production, as well as increase the likelihood of future pandemics. In this work, we identify high-resolution environmental zones in the context of a changing climate and predict longitudinal processes relevant to these challenges. We do this using exhaustive vector comparison methods that measure the climatic similarity between all locations on Earth at high geospatial resolution relative to global-scale analyses. The results are captured as networks, in which edges between geolocations are defined if their historical climate similarities exceed a threshold. We apply …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
This narrative review paper discusses the role of biotechnology in the development of sustainable agriculture. The paper begins by defning sustanability and highlights the importance of biotechnology in establishing sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture is an approach that prioritizes meeting current food and fiber production needs while conserving and enhancing natural resources for future generations. To achieve agricultural sustainability, it is necessary to strike a balance between economic viability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. This can be difficult, especially in the face of biotic and abiotic stresses such as pests, diseases, climate change, soil degradation, and water depletion. The prevalence of …
Predicting Outcomes In Early Treated Spinal Muscular Atrophy (Sma), Natalie Goedeker
Predicting Outcomes In Early Treated Spinal Muscular Atrophy (Sma), Natalie Goedeker
Dissertations
Background:
Early treatment of infants with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) improves outcomes. Newborn screening allows for early treatment of infants with SMA, even before signs of the disease are evident. In spite of early identification and treatment, newborn screen and prenatally-identified infants with SMA may still suffer effects of their disease. Approximately half of infants have significant gross motor developmental delays, while others meet developmental milestones on time. There is no current objective method to identify early-treated infants with SMA at risk for gross motor delays who might benefit from modifications to current treatment practices.
Objectives:
This multicenter project reports …

The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of the motusBASEBALLTM sensor. Trained/developmental male adult baseball pitchers (n = 10) threw ten pitches each from a regulation mound while kinematic and kinetic data were captured using an optical motion capture system and a motusBASEBALLTM sensor. Absolute and relative agreement were assessed. Outputs from the motusBASEBALLTM sensor were significantly different to the motion capture outputs for elbow varus torque, shoulder rotation, and arm speed (p < .05). Data were similar for arm slot (p = .847). Correlations (r) between system outputs were not significant (p > .05) and ranged from …

Movement Variability In Elbow And Wrist Kinematics Of New Ball Outswing Bowling In Cricket Fast Bowlers, Cody Lindsay, Rian Crowther, Kane Middleton Dr, Brad Clark, John Warmenhoven, Wayne Spratford
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated between-bowler movement variability of wrist and elbow kinematics during new ball swing bowling. A 3D motion analysis system captured the bowling action and ball trajectory of 11 pre-elite and elite fast bowlers delivering outswing. Kinematics were normalised to 100% of the delivery stride between back foot contact and ball release. A statistical parametric mapping approach using one-way ANOVAs investigated inter-individual movement variability. Significant differences were found in all kinematic parameters except for wrist radial/ulnar deviation angular velocity with bowlers using small amounts in either direction at the beginning of the phase. This study highlights that high-level athletic …

ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of load carriage on tibiofemoral kinematics during running. Nineteen healthy, recreationally active adults completed dynamic biplane radiography trials of the dominant limb knee with no load (BW), and an additional 55% of body weight (+55%BW) while running 10% above gait transition velocity. A volumetric model-based tracking technique was utilized to derive medial translation excursion, proximal (inferior-superior) translation excursion, anterior translation excursion, flexion, internal rotation and abduction. At heel strike, running with +55%BW exhibited a more flexed knee compared to BW. However, BW exhibited more proximal translation excursion compared to +55%BW. …

The Return To Run Process For Females Following A Tibial Bone Stress Injury: A Scoping Review., Esther George, Kelly Sheerin, Duncan Reid Professor
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Tibial bone stress injuries (BSI) are common among female runners and have a high recurrence rate. Complete rehabilitation requires a successful return to running, but there is a lack of guidance for this. This review sought to establish the evidence supporting the return-to-running process following a tibial BSI in females. Sources were identified by searching databases using relevant terms. Study titles and abstracts were screened using inclusion criteria, and 48 articles were selected. An individualised graduated return-to-run programme should be instigated, beginning with walk-run intervals, and progressing running distance ahead of speed. The ‘10% rule’ of graduated loading is not …

The Acute Effects Of A Grip-Constraint Tool On Upper Body And Racket Kinematics During Tennis Forehands, Nicholas Busuttil, Alexandra Roberts Dr, Marcus Dunn Dr, Kane Middleton Dr
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to compare the acute effect of a grip-constraint tool on upper body and racket kinematics during tennis single-handed forehand strokes. Upper-body and racket kinematics for two grip conditions, Preferred (self-selected) and Grip-constraint tool (fixed semi-western forehand grip) were captured for eleven tennis players using a 22-camera Vicon motion capture system (240 Hz). Using a grip-constraint tool resulted in a more closed racket face tilt (~4°) at ball impact while having variations in joint rotations across the shoulder, elbow and wrist. This possibly demonstrates the participant’s ability to self-organise compensatory angular rotations across the upper …

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Improving Outcomes Through Early Identification, Tina Lusk
Dissertations
Problem: Failure to identify and treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with academic underachievement, social difficulties, negative physical and mental health effects. Evidence suggests approximately 3% of a broad-based population sample and roughly 13% of an at-risk population are undiagnosed despite significant symptomology (Downey & Zun, 2018; Madsen et al., 2018; Okumura et al., 2019). The United States (U.S.) has no structured screening system for ADHD. Consequently, children receive no referral for diagnosis or treatment to mitigate its effects.
Methods: The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Model for Evidence-Based Practice using the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycle guided …

Marine Macroalgae Derived Natural Product Inhibitors Of Advanced Glycation End Product Formation By Scavenging Of Reactive Carbonyl Species And Their Implications In Slowing The Progression Of Prevalent Chronic Diseases, George Hanna
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Reactive Carbonyl Species (RCS) arise from the degradation of essential primary metabolites—sugars and lipids. The resulting stress, derived from their ability to spontaneously react with proteins, DNA, and monoamine neurotransmitters, is a fundamental biological pressure that has driven the evolution of diverse mechanisms for minimizing its impact on organismal health. Relevant to human health, the complications that accompany metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, illustrate what happens when RCS stress exceeds the body’s capacity to prevent excessive damage and the formation of the resulting Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE). These include elevated risks for cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, neurodegeneration, …

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in glioma initiation and progression. Glioma stem cells (GSCs) are essential for tumor initiation, maintenance, and therapeutic resistance. However, the biological functions and underlying mechanisms of lncRNAs in GSCs remain poorly understood. Here, we identified that LINC00839 was overexpressed in GSCs. A high level of LINC00839 was associated with GBM progression and radiation resistance. METTL3-mediated m6A modification on LINC00839 enhanced its expression in a YTHDF2-dependent manner. Mechanistically, LINC00839 functioned as a scaffold promoting c-Src-mediated phosphorylation of β-catenin, thereby inducing Wnt/β-catenin activation. Combinational use of celecoxib, an inhibitor of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, greatly sensitized GSCs to …

Xylooligosaccharides (XOSs) are increasingly being explored as prebiotics in fish diets; however, their effects and modes of action have not been well evaluated. Reports have shown that dietary XOS has the potential to improve the proliferation of beneficial gut microbes, and their metabolites, and enhance disease resistance in several fish species. In contrast, other studies report no substantial changes in immune and growth parameters compared to control groups. Like all prebiotics, the mode of action of XOS is based on their selective stimulation of beneficial gut microbiota, which will outcompete and prevent pathogen proliferation in the gut, and produce metabolites …
