Implementation Of An Evidence-Base Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury Prevention Program, Brenda Miner
Implementation Of An Evidence-Base Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury Prevention Program, Brenda Miner
MSN Capstone Projects
Covid-19 hindered many quality improvement projects. As the stressors from the pandemic began to disappear the healthcare industry was struck with new struggles. These new struggles were ensuring quality care was being provided to all patients. The decline in quality care also led to a decline in reimbursement from payor sources, such as Medicare. During the pandemic the healthcare industry was at their most vulnerable state and now that the dust is settling the ramifications of just surviving are staring the industry right in the eyes. Change is difficult, but it is even more difficult following traumatic events such as …

Safe Staffing, Safe Patients Benchmark Project, Sarah Barton
MSN Capstone Projects
With the most recent pandemic, nurses have been overworked, overwhelmed, and understaffed at dangerous levels. Nurses are leaving full time employment at this facility in droves to seek better wages through traveling. In turn, our patient outcomes have taken a large hit, with an increase in falls, pressure ulcers, and catheter-acquired urinary tract infections, to name a few. This is costly for the hospital, not to mention the damper it puts on the hospital’s vision and goals. With the implementation of a nursing incentive program, the hospital could cut overall spending in half within 2 years with an investment of …
The Need To Reconceptualize Wild Animals Post-Covid 19: Miscoordination Of Wildlife Regulations In China’S Food Legal Order, Yi Seul Kim
Pace Environmental Law Review
Today, China is one of the largest markets for wild animal trading. Yet, wild animals are in a regulatory grey area. There is an increasing need to revisit how wild animals are simultaneously but differently regulated in the food and wildlife protection regimes. Rarely do attempts to understand these two regimes occur, making this article's analysis of miscoordination in these bodies of law crucial in addressing the hindrance of nationwide food safety improvement efforts.

Faculty Research 2023
Brain transcriptional variation is a heritable trait that mediates complex behaviors, including addiction. Expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) mapping reveals genomic regions harboring genetic variants that influence transcript abundance. In this study, we profiled transcript abundance in the striatum of 386 Diversity Outbred (J:DO) mice of both sexes using RNA-Seq. All mice were characterized using a behavioral battery of widely-used exploratory and risk-taking assays prior to transcriptional profiling. We performed eQTL mapping, incorporated the results into a browser-based eQTL viewer, and deposited co-expression network members in GeneWeaver. The eQTL viewer allows researchers to query specific genes to obtain allelic effect …

Proposing A Measure Of Ethicality For Humans And Ai, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Smarter people or intelligent machines are able to make more accurate inferences about their environment and other agents more efficiently than less intelligent agents. Formally: ‘Intelligence measures an agent’s ability to achieve goals in a wide range of environments.’ (Legg, 2008)
In this dissertation we extend this definition to include ethical behaviour and we will offer a mathematical formalism and a way to estimate how ethical an action is or will be, both for a human and for a computer, by calculating the expected values of random variables. Formally, we propose the following measure of ethicality, which is computable, or …
Examining School Nurses' Knowledge And Confidence Related To Their Intention To Screen For And Report Child Sexual Abuse: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study, Suzanne Ackers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Child sexual abuse (CSA) in a preventable national public health problem that results in adverse health consequences. Research suggests many victims are currently attending school. Screening for early detection of health issues is integral to school nurse (SN) practice but there is little evidence that screening for CSA is occurring in schools despite recommendations that it should be. Lack of confidence and knowledge related to screening for suspected CSA contribute to a SN’s missed opportunity for early intervention.
Purpose: To describe SNs knowledge and self-efficacy associated with screening for and reporting CSA in school settings.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional …

The Impact Of Repeated Reading Intervention On Oral Reading Fluency For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Al Naji
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence rate of learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen concurrently with their inclusion into public schools in Saudi Arabia. Being in schools, they face academic challenges, particularly in reading. This increased rate evokes the importance of implementing valuable strategies to keep up the academic skills of those students. These students require Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs), which have been demonstrated crucial for their reading development. Nevertheless, limited research has been done on examining the efficacy of EBPs used to enhance the reading skills of learners with ASD, especially their Oral Reading Fluency (ORF). This study used an effective approach …
Glycerophosphocholine Is Used For Lipid And Phosphate Metabolism By Candida Albicans, Will King
Glycerophosphocholine Is Used For Lipid And Phosphate Metabolism By Candida Albicans, Will King
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The metabolism of phosphatidylcholine (PC), a major eukaryotic membrane lipid, has been shown to be an important aspect of pathogenesis in Candida albicans. Of note, PC turnover product, glycerophosphocholine (GPC), is abundant renal metabolite available within the host. GPC is readily imported by C. albicans, and deletion of the major GPC transporter, Git3, leads to decreased virulence in a bloodstream infection model. Here I have characterized two potential metabolic fates of internalized GPC. The first metabolic fate explored is internalized GPC can be hydrolyzed to release Pi. To determine if GPC import and subsequent metabolism impact phosphate …
Systematic Product And Process Design Of Versatile Perfluorocarbon Nanoemulsions For Elimination Of Hypoxia And Reactive Oxygen Species, Eric Lambert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to a 2022 report, organs destined for transplantation are discarded 15% of the time for various reasons (Israni et al. 2022). This highlights a critical need in transplant practices. Transplant donor tissues are in need of essential nutrients, including molecular oxygen, to maintain integrity during preservation. A current trend in preservation is to perfuse the ex vivo tissue graft with nutrient-rich aqueous perfusate on a closed circuit. This practice, known as machine perfusion (MP) is limited by the absence of an oxygen-carrying component in the perfusate. Additionally, injuries to the recipient are sustained on reperfusion of the transplanted …

Hoping As A Transformational Imperative In Puerto Rico: A Phenomenological And Grounded Theory Study Within Colonized Space, José Luiggi-Hernández
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the United States continues to restrict Puerto Rico’s self-determination and imposes oppressive institutions such as the Oversight Board, the people of the archipelago live in precarity and hopelessness. Limited psychological research on colonialism has focused on the detrimental impact of oppression and its influence on the development of fatalism and the inferiority complex. On the other hand, existing psychological theories of hope fail to describe how it is lived within the post-colonial context and to explain the ways in which this psychological phenomenon arises even in the face of systematic dehumanization. As Puerto Ricans show evident signs of hope …

Assessment Of Facultative Sulfur Reducing Bacteria In Acidic And Circumneutral Passive Remediation Systems Using A Novel Culturing Technique, Natalie Lamagna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pollution resulting from abandoned mine drainage (AMD) is widespread across the nation and impacts thousands of miles of watersheds in Pennsylvania alone. AMD contaminants pose hazards to ecosystems and to human health by lowering the pH and by suspending toxic heavy metals in water. Sulfur reducing bacteria (SRB) are known to remove metals and sulfur species from mine drainage through the formation of metal sulfide precipitates and have been documented to raise the alkalinity of water. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the environmental conditions in which these microorganisms survive. Environmental samples were collected from a circumneutral and an acidic …

Why Feed Seaweed? Tacit And Codified Knowledge Networks In The Dairy Industry, Michelle K. Tynan
Why Feed Seaweed? Tacit And Codified Knowledge Networks In The Dairy Industry, Michelle K. Tynan
Theses - ALL
While demand for dairy products increases globally, dairy cattle and other ruminants emit over a quarter of total methane emissions through enteric fermentation (Carrazco et al., 2020). A potent greenhouse, methane has eighty times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period (Black et. al., 2021). Consumer demand for more environmentally friendly dairy products paired with state climate goals has the dairy industry seeking ways to reduce methane emissions. One proposed solution is to feed algae (e.g., seaweed, kelp) to cows, as some live animal trials have shown it can reduce methane emissions by 80% (Stefenoni et …
“Money For Food”: A Deeper Look At Food Insecurity And Class Privilege In Higher Education, April Lopez
“Money For Food”: A Deeper Look At Food Insecurity And Class Privilege In Higher Education, April Lopez
Theses - ALL
Assumptions around the class privilege of college students are misconstrued. Food insecurity rates among college students (between 20-50%) far outweigh the rate of food insecurity nationally (12%) (Dubick et al., 2016). With the rising cost of tuition, insufficient financial aid, and the growth of first-generation and lower income students entering higher education, an increasing number of college students are struggling to balance paying for tuition and basic needs such as food. This paper looks at how factors such as race, undergraduate year, first-generation status, and employment status impact a student’s likelihood of being food insecure. While most studies focus on …

Overview Of Iron Deficiency And Iron Deficiency Anemia In Women And Girls Of Reproductive Age, Richard J. Derman, Anmol Patted
Global Health Articles
Over 50% of pregnant women are anemic and the majority of these are iron deficient. Micronutrient deficiency, the symptom of heavy menstrual bleeding in nonpregnant individuals, and loss of blood associated with pregnancy and obstetric delivery contribute to iron deficiency (ID). Poor outcomes with low maternal iron can affect not only the pregnancy but can also have major bearings on the offspring. Correction of ID and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant and prepregnant populations with single-dose intravenous iron supplementation may offer improved outcomes. A harmonization process that incorporates all major randomized controlled trials studying the use of single-dose IV …

A child’s first place of learning is within the home environment. Research has proven the importance of family involvement in developing children’s early literacy skills. Children have academic success when family members are involved and supportive of development. Early elementary students are expected to enter formal schooling already holding knowledge of foundational literacy skills. The home environment offers children the opportunity to learn and support later literacy success. However, there has been a disconnect between how family and schools partner which has impacted how families engage in their child’s educational experience. Schools and teachers should continue to partner with families …
