Journal of Innovation in Science, Engineering and Technology

According to research conducted in foreign coun-tries among undergraduates, there is a huge con-sumption of dietary supplements without proper consultation, and many have encountered adverse effects. However, there have been no satisfactory research studies done on dietary supplement usage among Allied Health Sciences undergraduates in Sri Lanka. The objective of the study was to de-scribe knowledge, attitudes, and practices of die-tary supplement usage among Allied Health Sci-ences undergraduates in Sri Lanka. In this descrip-tive cross-sectional study, a sample taken from a population of 2000 undergraduates of five Allied Health Sciences faculties in Sri Lanka were as-sessed using a structured, self-administered …

Building From Scratch: The First-Ever Food Pantry At Lynn University, Stacy Alesi Aug 2023

Building From Scratch: The First-Ever Food Pantry At Lynn University, Stacy Alesi

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

We will describe how Lynn University librarians took a risk, spent some money we didn’t have, and ended up developing Lynn’s first-ever food pantry. It has since been embraced and valued across campus, and will now be – we believe – fully-funded and made permanent. We hope this will lead to more systemic, full-scale programs to help food-insecure students. Word-of-mouth spread far and wide. Since opening in the fall, more than 700 students have used the pantry. Of 276 anonymous surveys received, 198 of them report that they use it because they cannot afford food. We’ve now partnered with Lynn’s …

Sociocultural Factors Associated With Persistent Prescription Opioid Use (Ppou) Among Puerto Rican Adults In Massachusetts, Inyene E. Essien-Aleksi, Yuan Zhang, Ainat Koren, Natalia Palacios, Luis M. Falcon, Katherine L. Tucker

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Increasing numbers of opioid-overdose deaths have been witnessed among Hispanics and other underserved populations in Massachusetts. Puerto Rican adults (PRs) have a disproportionately higher prevalence of chronic diseases than non-Hispanic White adults-conditions linked to increased prescription opioid use and misuse. Stress indicators, including low acculturation, low social support, and perceived discrimination, have been recognized as correlates of chronic diseases. However, little research has been undertaken on how these socio-cultural factors relate to persistent prescription opioid use among PRs. This study evaluated the prevalence of prescription opioid use and socio-cultural factors associated with persistent prescription opioid use among PRs.

Experiences And Perceptions Of Rural Postpartum Women With Substance Use Disorders Inclusive Of Opioids Regarding Their Care, Debra L. Kramlich

Dissertations

Perinatal opioid use and neonatal withdrawal continue to rise rapidly in the face of the growing epidemic of opioid addiction in the United States, with rural areas more severely impacted. Despite several decades of research and development of practice guidelines, maternal and neonatal outcomes have not improved substantially. This focused ethnography aimed to address that gap by exploring rural women's experiences and perceptions of care to inform development of efficacious, holistic models of care to improve outcomes for these women and their children. Participant observations, oral accounts and formal interviews, and artifact review (i.e., health records, any print and electronic …

Real Time Tracking Of Sleep Behaviors As A Predictor Of Suicidal Ideation For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Social Anxiety, Yong Seuk Steven Lograsso

Theses and Dissertations

Suicide continues to be a critical concern for society as one of the leading causes of death in the United States, increasing from 10.4 to 13.5 per 100,000 from 2000 to 2016. This risk is further increased up to 8 times for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors have been difficult to predict on a moment-by-moment basis, in part due to technological challenges. Suicidal ideation has been identified as an important indicator of suicidal behavior and an important measurement for predicting suicide in both neurotypical individuals and individuals with autism spectrum disorder. In particular, sleep disturbances are …

Life-Giving Bodies: Towards An Analogical Relationship Between Breastfeeding And The Eucharist, Laura Tringali Aug 2023

Life-Giving Bodies: Towards An Analogical Relationship Between Breastfeeding And The Eucharist, Laura Tringali

New Horizons

As embodied people who benefit spiritually from the concrete aspects of the sacraments for the understanding of spiritual realities, breastfeeding provides a concrete experience that reflects the bodily self-gift of Christ’s Passion. The analogy of desiring the Eucharist as an infant desiring to latch provides an opportunity to consider the transformative power of the Eucharist to unite one to Christ, nourish one’s spiritual growth, and strengthen the bond of the Body of Christ.

Introduction: While the effects of long-term measures of inflammation and stress are well studied, less is known about the effects of an acute exercise challenge on exercise in young healthy individuals. Methods: This was a randomized crossover design (mean age = 19.25, SD = 1.45)that measured biomarkers of stress (cortisoland salivary alpha amylase, sAA)and inflammation (IL-1β, CRP)in an exercise and control condition. In the exercise condition, participants walked or ran on a treadmill at 75-85% of their maximum heart rate for 40minutes. Under the control condition, participants stood for 40 minutes to control for orthostatic effects. Biomarkers were quantified from …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Three Odontaspis ferox (confirmed by mtDNA barcoding) were found in the English Channel and Celtic Sea in 2023 at Lepe, UK (50.7846, −1.3508), Kilmore Quay, Ireland (52.1714, −6.5937), and Lyme Bay, UK (50.6448, −2.9302). These are the first records of O. ferox in either country, and extend the species' range by over three degrees of latitude, to >52° N. They were ~275 (female), 433 (female), and 293 cm (male) total length, respectively. These continue a series of new records, possibly indicative of a climate change−induced shift in the species' range.

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Pexidartinib (PEX, TURALIO), a selective and potent inhibitor of the macrophage colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor, has been approved for the treatment of tenosynovial giant cell tumor. However, frequent and severe adverse effects have been reported in the clinic, resulting in a boxed warning on PEX for its risk of liver injury. The mechanisms underlying PEX-related hepatotoxicity, particularly metabolism-related toxicity, remain unknown. In the current study, the metabolic activation of PEX was investigated in human/mouse liver microsomes (HLM/MLM) and primary human hepatocytes (PHH) using glutathione (GSH) and methoxyamine (NH2OMe) as trapping reagents. A total of 11 PEX-GSH and 7 PEX-NH2OMe adducts were …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

After an initial pull-though, patients with Hirschsprung disease (HD) can present with obstructive symptoms, Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC), failure to thrive, or fecal soiling. This current review focuses on algorithms for evaluation and treatment in children with HD as a part of a manuscript series on updates in bowel management. In constipated patients, anatomic causes of obstruction should be excluded. Once anatomy is confirmed to be normal, laxatives, fiber, osmotic laxatives, or mechanical management can be utilized. Botulinum toxin injections are performed in all patients with HD before age five because of the nonrelaxing sphincters that they learn to overcome with …

Nourishing Family Connections: Exploring The Impact Of Mealtime Dynamics On Child Depressive Symptoms, Kyra (Dee) Bekelja

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Literature reviews show that the frequency of family meals is associated with increased positive health outcomes in children. Our study looked to find the essential characteristics that family mealtimes should have in order to produce the most beneficial outcomes for children regarding depressive symptomology. One hundred twenty-four children and their parents participated in answering surveys about individual and family health behaviors. We hypothesized that a greater frequency of family meals lowers levels of depression in children, especially if the child enjoys family meals. A moderation analysis was used to assess the moderation effects and relationship with the frequency of family …

Characterization Of The Immune Deficiency Pathway During Female Meiosis In Drosophila Melanogaster, Sarah Mashburn Aug 2023

Characterization Of The Immune Deficiency Pathway During Female Meiosis In Drosophila Melanogaster, Sarah Mashburn

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Organisms can defend against pathogens by significantly increasing the diversity of their progeny, so that some progeny are more likely to survive infection. This led to the prediction that infection should cause an increase in recombination rates which was seen in a previous study. However, the mechanism that regulates recombination rates in response to infection is not understood and in that study they did not provide a mechanism for how that can occur. In an RNAi screen, our lab found the gene mustard (mtd) is required for normal recombination rates. This gene was previously shown to be part of the …
