The high concentration of bicarbonate ion ( HCO₃-) in irrigation water or soil is a limiting factor for the growth and production of kiwifruit vineyards. Especially the high concentration of bicarbonate in irrigation water can cause negative effects on the development of many plants at different rates. In this study, the effects of different concentrations (0, 170, 350, and 550 mg L-1) of bicarbonate ion (HCO₃-) in irrigation water on six kiwifruit seedlings (DA1, DA2, CK1, CK2, CK3, AA) were studied in the greenhouse condition. The six kiwifruit seedlings used in the study belong to a total of 3 different …

Faba bean is protein-enriched legume crop consumed in the form of pods, and cooked seeds and is a part of the traditional food of many Mediterranean countries. It shows variations in its phenotypes, especially in seed size and color. Therefore, it is very important to investigate faba bean genotypes having less cooking time. Keeping this in view, a total of 399 faba bean accessions including three commercial varieties were obtained from International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and Aegean Agricultural Research Institute National Gene Bank for the investigation of cooking traits variations. The field experiments were …

In this study, firstly, enzyme-active malt flours were obtained from different germinated grains including wheat, barley, rye, triticale, millet, maize, rice, and oat. Next, these enzyme-active malt flours and commercial enzyme were added to bread wheat flour in a level that provides the same amylolytic activity and their effects on bread quality were investigated. The germination process significantly increased the amylolytic enzyme activity in grains but also caused a significant change in L*, a*, and b* color values. Among flours containing different malt flours, the lowest delayed Zeleny sedimentation value was determined in flour containing paddy malt, while the highest …

Different Doses Of Cadmium In Soil Negatively Impact Growth, Plant Mineral Homeostasis And Antioxidant Defense Of Mung Bean Plants, Fahad Mohammed Alzuaibr
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Heavy metal (HM) pollution of soil has become a gigantic issue across the globe. Metals enter the food chain and cause problems in plants, animals, and humans. We performed this work to evaluate the impacts of different cadmium (Cd) levels on growth, physiology, mineral nutrition, and yield attributes of Vigna radiata. Changes in growth fund are statistically significant and directly linked with an increase in Cd doses. Various concentrations of cadmium exhibited significant (p ≤ 0.05) vicissitudes in biochemical parameters such as in the contents of chlorophyll, amino acids, soluble proteins, and total soluble sugars in experimental plants. The shoot …

Burnout As Chronic Disease, Benjamin Doolittle
Burnout As Chronic Disease, Benjamin Doolittle
Journal of Wellness
Burnout is endemic. The prevalence of burnout (~50%) among healthcare providers has been stable over the past 20 years. Acknowledging variability from year to year, burnout is pervasive, with no signs of abating. Despite increased awareness of mental health issues, the rise of Chief Wellness Officers, and the expansion of Employee Assistance Programs, there has not been much improvement. We are even burned out from burnout. Survey responses are low and often do not result in action. Longitudinal intervention trials are often small and of short duration. We need a new paradigm to manage physician burnout. A chronic care management …
Neurotoxicity And Outcomes From Developmental Lead Exposure: Persistent Or Permanent?, Jay S. Schneider
Neurotoxicity And Outcomes From Developmental Lead Exposure: Persistent Or Permanent?, Jay S. Schneider
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Background:
Childhood lead poisoning remains an important public health issue in the United States, as well as elsewhere in the world. Although primary prevention is a major goal and it is critically important to keep children from getting poisoned, it is also important to explore ways to reduce the neurotoxic effects of lead in those children already poisoned. Whether lead-induced neurotoxicity and its related adverse outcomes are viewed as “permanent” or “persistent” may influence the way in which potential remediation efforts are considered for improving outcomes from childhood lead poisoning.
Objectives:
The objective of this commentary was to discuss the …

Flavonoids Quercetin And Kaempferol Are Nr4a1 Antagonists And Suppress Endometriosis In Female Mice, Lei Zhang, Kumaravel Mohankumar, Gregory Martin, Fuada Mariyam, Yuri Park, Sang Jun Han, Stephen Safe
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Nuclear receptor 4A1 (NR4A1) plays an important role in endometriosis progression; levels of NR4A1 in endometriotic lesions are higher than in normal endometrium, and substituted bis-indole analogs (NR4A1) antagonists suppress endometriosis progression in mice with endometriosis. In addition, the flavonoids kaempferol and quercetin are natural products that directly bind NR4A1 and significantly repress the intrinsic NR4A1-dependent transcriptional activity in human endometriotic epithelial and stromal cells and Ishikawa endometrial cancer cells. NR4A1 knockdown and inhibition of NR4A1 by kaempferol and quercetin suppressed proliferation of human endometriotic epithelial cells and Ishikawa cells by inhibiting epidermal growth factor receptor/c-Myc/survivin-mediated growth-promoting and survival pathways, …
The Implications Of Solidarity For Food Ethics, John Sniegocki
The Implications Of Solidarity For Food Ethics, John Sniegocki
The Journal of Social Encounters
This essay examines numerous ways in which commitments to solidarity have relevance in the area of food ethics. Among the topics explored are food insecurity and hunger, workers’ rights, ecology, and the treatment of animals. Particular attention is paid to the impacts of the production and consumption of animal products. These issues are examined through the lens of the developing understanding of solidarity present in the tradition of Catholic social teaching (CST). The ethical framework provided by CST, it is suggested, could be further enhanced by insights drawn from the growing tradition of “Black veganism” and its holistic, intersectional understanding …

Ecological Solidarity And Sustainable Development In Africa, Ambrose Esigbemi Umetietie
The Journal of Social Encounters
Today we are faced with a challenge that calls for a shift in our thinking, so that humanity stops threatening its life support system. We are called to assist the Earth to heal her wounds and in the process heal our own ... This will happen if we see the need to revive our sense of belonging to a larger family of life (Maathai, 2010). According to John Paul II, the “threat of ecological breakdown is teaching us the extent to which greed and selfishness - both individual and collective - are contrary to the order of creation, an order …
Consumer Fraud, Home Financing, And The Erosion Of Trust, Linda E. Fisher
Consumer Fraud, Home Financing, And The Erosion Of Trust, Linda E. Fisher
Northwestern University Law Review
Consumer fraud is a civil violation of a remedial statute not requiring specific intent to deceive. Most consumer fraud statutes define violations as unconscionable, misleading, or deceptive practices irrespective of intent, in derogation of the principle of caveat emptor. They do not apply to business-to-business transactions. Trust plays a central role in business-to-consumer transactions. Because consumers are individuals, there is often an inherent inequality in consumer transactions. Sophisticated marketing techniques—especially target marketing that follows potential customers all over the internet—hound consumers’ online lives and manipulate purchasing decisions. The increasing monetization of almost everything exacerbates these effects. This transactionalism itself erodes …

Obesity is a pandemic that disproportionately affects children from vulnerable populations in the USA. Current treatment approaches in primary care settings in the USA have been reported to be insufficient at managing pediatric obesity, primarily due to implementation challenges for healthcare systems and barriers for families. While the literature has examined the efficacy of pediatric obesity interventions focused on internal validity, it lacks sufficient reporting and analysis of external validity necessary for successful translation to primary care settings. We conducted a systematic review of the primary-care-setting literature from January 2007 to March 2020 on family-based pediatric weight management interventions in …

Unlike for advanced liver fibrosis, the practical rules for the early non-invasive diagnosis of cirrhosis in NAFLD remain not well defined. Here, we report the derivation and validation of a stepwise diagnostic algorithm in 1568 patients with NAFLD and liver biopsy coming from four independent cohorts. The study algorithm, using first the elastography-based tests Agile3+ and Agile4 and then the specialized blood tests FibroMeterV3G and CirrhoMeterV3G, provides stratification in four groups, the last of which is enriched in cirrhosis (71% prevalence in the validation set). A risk prediction chart is also derived to allow estimation of the individual probability of …

Histamine from our diet or gut microbes can trigger gastrointestinal disturbances, and resistant potato starch (RPS) has previously been shown to alleviate these symptoms while increasing levels of health-associated bacteria such as Akkermansia through unknown mechanisms. Post hoc exploratory metabolomic analysis of serum amino acid, amine, and carnitine metabolites in participants consuming 3.5 g/day RPS or placebo (n = 48) was performed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to determine whether RPS positively influences histamine metabolism and related parameters. Histamine levels were significantly reduced by RPS treatment, but histamine-degrading enzyme products were unaffected by RPS. RPS also reduced histamine-secreting Haemophilus and Lactobacillus …

Breastfeeding Practices In The Midsouth: Exploring Husbands’ Experiences, Thurel James George
Breastfeeding Practices In The Midsouth: Exploring Husbands’ Experiences, Thurel James George
Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines husbands’ experiences and the role they play in breastfeeding families. The vast majority of research on this topic focuses solely on the mother’s viewpoint and experience. Through in-depth interviews with eight white males residing in the Midsouth, the lived experiences of husbands within the family context and the ways in which they are active participants in parenting decisions and practices are explored. Previous research indicates that breastfeeding initiation and duration can be contingent upon the husband’s approval. This study supported previous research by identifying three themes that highlighted the participants’ breastfeeding experience. The themes identified were the …
