An Analysis Of Poverty Convergence: Evidence From Pennsylvania Counties, Angel Alcantara, Stephanie M. Brewer, James J. Jozefowicz Nov 2023

An Analysis Of Poverty Convergence: Evidence From Pennsylvania Counties, Angel Alcantara, Stephanie M. Brewer, James J. Jozefowicz

The Journal of Economics and Politics

This paper extends applications of unconditional and conditional β-convergence and σ-convergence analysis to poverty rates in a panel data sample of Pennsylvania counties during the period 1990-2019. Spatial structural breaks between rural and urban counties in Pennsylvania plus the possibility that Philadelphia County is an outlier are acknowledged to avoid spurious inferences. The findings support the existence of unconditional β-convergence in the pooled, urban, and rural samples with non-metropolitan areas exhibiting the greatest convergence. However, the largest conditional β-convergence is observed for urban counties, and this outcome is robust to the exclusion of Philadelphia County. Graphical evidence evinces a greater …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Living in one of the most remote island chains in the world, Native Hawaiians developed sophisticated food cultivation systems that sustained a thriving and robust population for centuries. These systems were disrupted by colonization, which has contributed to the health disparities that Native Hawaiians face today. MALAMA, a culturally-grounded backyard aquaponics program, was developed to promote food sovereignty among Native Hawaiians. This study utilized participant interview and focus group data to identify how participating in the MALAMA program impacts the wellbeing. The findings demonstrate that MALAMA enhanced the participants’ pilina (relationship, connection) to traditional foods, land, cultural identity, family, and …

Health Risks And Concerns Associated With E-Cigarettes (Ecs) And Heated Tobacco Products (Htps): A Comprehensive Review, Sombat Muengtaweepongsa

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

E-cigarettes (ECs) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) are alternative products to traditional cigarettes that operate on different principles. While ECs heat a liquid to produce an aerosol, HTPs heat processed tobacco sticks or cartridges. ECs and HTPs carry potential health risks, and their long-term effects are still being studied. Concerns exist regarding their use among specific populations, including youth and non-smokers. ECs liquids typically contain solvents, flavorings, nicotine, and additives. Heating the liquid can generate aerosols containing potentially harmful substances like formaldehyde, acrolein, heavy metals, phenolic compounds, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Studies have linked ECs use to increased respiratory …

On a daily basis, a wide range of materials including inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) inadvertently find their way into the environment. Meanwhile, intentionally used NPs, such as the new generation of nanofertilizers (NFs) are designed to enhance agronomic production. However, their physicochemical properties and not-so-well understood effects raise potential risks to the plant reproductive cycle, specifically pollen development, a subject largely absent in academic research. Even slight contamination, deformation, or aberration of pollen could have enormous impacts on the ecosystem. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the influence of various metal-based NPs on sunflower pollen morphology and its yield. Nano-formulations were …

A Heritable Iron Memory Enables Decision-Making In Escherichia Coli, Souvik Bhattacharyya, Nabin Bhattarai, Dylan M Pfannenstiel, Brady Wilkins, Abhyudai Singh, Rasika M Harshey

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The importance of memory in bacterial decision-making is relatively unexplored. We show here that a prior experience of swarming is remembered when Escherichia coli encounters a new surface, improving its future swarming efficiency. We conducted >10,000 single-cell swarm assays to discover that cells store memory in the form of cellular iron levels. This “iron” memory preexists in planktonic cells, but the act of swarming reinforces it. A cell with low iron initiates swarming early and is a better swarmer, while the opposite is true for a cell with high iron. The swarming potential of a mother cell, which tracks with …

Wisdom Regarding Beauty. Self-Effacement And One's Right Relationship To Beauty, Alexndra Hayes

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

What does it mean to cultivate aesthetic virtue in a way that contributes to our character? Pursue beauty, not its effect. Many contemporary theories emphasize the great effects of aesthetic life—expertise, individual style, aesthetic community, and so on. Directly pursuing these effects effaces our endeavors. We should instead love beauty itself because it is worthy of love. This love cannot be measured as easily as these effects, though it is characteristically marked by a self-forgetting receptivity and childlike curiosity.
