The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Pangi (Pangium edule Reinw) seed is known to be a poisonous material. However, it becomes safe for consumption after processing. This study determined the effect of village-level processing by the Obu Manuvu community of Marilog District, Davao City, Philippines on the antinutrient and nutritional composition of Pangi seeds. Processing methods involved washing with running water for about 15 s, boiling in water for 30 min, and soaking in flowing water in a nearby river overnight. Results showed that after processing, the levels of antinutrients such as cyanogenic glycosides and oxalates were reduced significantly (p < 0.05) by 99.15% and 78.23%, respectively. Further, the tannin content was also significantly reduced by 96.15%. The crude fat content significantly increased (p < 0.05) by about 54%. Crude ash and fiber decreased, while protein did not change significantly (p < 0.05). Minerals such as calcium and zinc increased (p < 0.05) by 221.43% and 64.39%, respectively while the iron and manganese levels remained unaffected. Findings of the study suggested that the processing method by the Obu Manuvu effectively reduces the level of antinutrients, thereby improving the edibility and safety of Pangi seeds. Further, the processing method improves the level of some nutrients, specifically crude fat, calcium, and zinc.

Implementing Community Health Workers To Improve The Management Of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases In Children, Julia L. Newell

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: Childhood obesity, asthma, and untreated mental health conditions are three examples of chronic non-communicable diseases (CNDs) that pose a host of negative consequences later in life. Minority children from low-income families, especially those with environmental disadvantages, face additional risk factors for the development of these diseases. Community health workers (CHWs) are in a unique position to help address these negative health externalities by being attuned with the linguistic, cultural, and socioemotional needs of members of their communities. Research has demonstrated success in CHW-led interventions curtailing the negative impacts associated with these diseases in low-income, minority communities.

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Sports Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Among Student Athletes At The University Of Alaska Anchorage, Emily J. Thompson Dec 2023

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Sports Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Among Student Athletes At The University Of Alaska Anchorage, Emily J. Thompson

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Nutrition is essential for college athletes. However, many athletes may not meet nutrition recommendations for their specific sport due to a lack of knowledge or because they do not believe that proper nutrition is essential for their performance. To ensure that programs best meet the needs of athletes, it is important to understand athletes’ current knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) related to sports nutrition to improve nutritional awareness and elicit desired behavior change. The idea that improving KAB can lead to behavior change specific to nutrition is well-studied and has its foundations in social cognitive theory. However, there is a …

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) in Alaska uses paraprofessionals to determine nutrition risk and provide education for their clients. Through discussions with administration and other staff at Alaska’s state WIC office, it was determined that there was a need for more in-depth nutrition education for paraprofessionals. Specific educational topics were identified by WIC nutrition experts and from client feedback. These topics included vitamin D, iron, portion sizes, picky eating and bottle weaning, and food safety. An e-learning portfolio was developed around these 5 topics to provide further education for paraprofessionals through stand-alone modules. This …

A Good Death: End-Of-Life Lawyering Through A Relational Autonomy Lens, Genevieve Mann Dec 2023

A Good Death: End-Of-Life Lawyering Through A Relational Autonomy Lens, Genevieve Mann

Washington Law Review

Death is difficult—even for lawyers who counsel clients on end-of-life planning. The predominant approach to counseling clients about death relies too heavily on traditional notions of personal autonomy and a nearly impenetrable right to be free from interference by others. Rooted in these notions, contracts called “advance directives” emerged as the primary tool for choosing one’s final destiny. Nevertheless, advance directives are underutilized and ineffective because many people are mired in death anxiety, indecision, and the weight of planning for a hypothetical illness. In the end, many do not get the death they choose: to trust in others and share …

The Future Of Anti-Poverty Legislation, Andrew Hammond, Ariel Jurow Kleiman, Gabriel Scheffler

Articles

The era of big-government COVID relief is over. The initial pandemic relief legislation, followed by two years of Democratic control in Washington, seemed to herald the expansion and modernization of the U.S. safety net. But sustained reform proved elusive. Now that this window of opportunity has closed, it's time to step back and take stock. For those who focus on anti-poverty programs, one question persists: The next time there is such an opportunity to strengthen anti-poverty programs through legislation, how should federal law change?

This Article suggests the answer to that question lies in lessons from recent experience, including, but …

P-Ring: The Conserved Nature Of Phosphorus Enriched Cells In Seedling Roots Of Distantly Related Species, Aniruddha Acharya, Thomas C. Pesacreta Dec 2023

P-Ring: The Conserved Nature Of Phosphorus Enriched Cells In Seedling Roots Of Distantly Related Species, Aniruddha Acharya, Thomas C. Pesacreta

Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences

Plants require sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and mineral ions for their growth and development. Roots in vascular plants sequester water and ions from soil and transport them to the aboveground parts of the plant. Due to heterogeneous nature of soil, roots have evolved several regulatory barriers from molecular to organismic level that selectively allows certain ions to enter the vascular tissues for transport according to the physiological and metabolic demands of plant cell. Current literature profusely elaborates about apoplastic barriers, but the possibility of the existence of a symplastic regulation through phosphorous-enriched cells has not been mentioned. Recent investigations on …
