Temporal And Spatial Influences On Fawn Summer Survival In Pronghorn Populations: Management Implications From Noninvasive Monitoring, Cole A. Bleke, Eric M. Gese, Juan J. Villalba, Shane B. Roberts, Susannah S. French

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Monitoring vital rates allowsmanagers to estimate trends in growth rates of ungulate populations. However, connecting the influence of nutrition on ungulate demography is challenging. Noninvasive sampling offers a low-cost, low-effort alternative for measuring nutritional indices, allowing for an increased understanding of the mechanistic relationships between environmental factors, nutrition, and specific population vital rates. We examined the temporal influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) fawn recruitment. We collected fresh fecal samples from adult female pronghorn in five subpopulations spanning three sampling periods associated with critical maternal life-history stages (late gestation, early lactation, breeding season) for …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The avian influenza virus is a global pathogen with significant health and economic implications. While primarily a pathogen of wild and domestic birds, recent outbreaks of the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) clade 2.3.4.4b have caused mortality in a wide variety of mammals, including members of the Canidae family, on multiple continents. Despite sporadic mortality events globally, the epidemiology and pathobiology of H5N1 HPAIV in wild canids remains poorly defined. During 2022–2024, 41 wild canid carcasses (diagnostic cases), including 23 red foxes and 18 gray foxes, were tested for the influenza A virus (IAV) via PCR, with five …

Implementation And Evaluation Of Perinatal Educational Video Series – Postpartum Hemorrhage, Daileann Lamara Hemmings

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Abstract

Implementation and Evaluation of Perinatal Educational Video Series –Postpartum Hemorrhage Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2021), 700 women die each year due to pregnancy related complications in the United States. Black women (Erickson, 2020) have a 26.6% higher risk for morbidity resulting from postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and a five times higher risk of mortality. Education can serve as a tool to increase knowledge, promote a mother’s ability to identify the onset of a risk and report signs and symptoms of PPH that could otherwise lead to complications or death. This DNP pilot project developed and …

The California Bridge Model For Emergency Department-Initiated Medication-Assisted Treatment For Opioid Use Disorder: Adaptations For Perinatal Hospital Services, Devin C. Thomas Jan 2024

The California Bridge Model For Emergency Department-Initiated Medication-Assisted Treatment For Opioid Use Disorder: Adaptations For Perinatal Hospital Services, Devin C. Thomas

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Background: Poor access to gender-specific, pregnancy-focused medication-assisted treatment for perinatal opioid use disorder greatly contributes to adverse outcomes for pregnant patients, infants, and society, at large. It is well established that Emergency Department-initiated pharmacotherapy for opioid use disorder is safe, effective, and can be rapidly adopted by hospital systems to improve access to care for people who misuse opioids. Like the Emergency Department, perinatal hospital services are well positioned to serve as critical access points in the treatment of perinatal opioid use disorder. However, concerns such as lack of training, workflow inefficiencies, and bias act as barriers to co-located, integrated …

Understanding The Dynamics Of Food And Economic Development In The Community Of Kakisa, Northwest Territories, Canada, Laura Rodriguez Reyes Jan 2024

Understanding The Dynamics Of Food And Economic Development In The Community Of Kakisa, Northwest Territories, Canada, Laura Rodriguez Reyes

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

For Indigenous Peoples, the land embodies a source of cultural and spiritual well-being that is linked to their way of life and identities through divine and traditional connections. Unfortunately, colonial powers, the global food system, socioeconomic inequalities and environmental degradation are impacting northern Indigenous lands and food systems, leading to food insecurity. Nevertheless, communities are still thriving in the face of adversity. In the Northwest Territories, on the lands of Ka’a’gee Tu First Nations (KTFN) in the community settlement of Kakisa, people are growing food through vegetable gardens and greenhouses to support their vision of a resilient food system.

Evaluating The Risk Posed By Gadolinium In The Grand River Watershed, Johann Memmel Jan 2024

Evaluating The Risk Posed By Gadolinium In The Grand River Watershed, Johann Memmel

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Gadolinium (Gd) is a rare earth element (REE), primarily used in contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with additional applications in metallurgy, phosphors, neutron shielding, and other niche applications. Both Gd and Gd-based contrast agents (GBCAs, the form used for MRIs) have been detected downstream of wastewater effluent discharges and there is currently little research into the risk this poses to aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the potential environmental risks of Gd and GBCAs using the Grand River watershed (GRW) in southwestern Ontario as a model ecosystem due to it containing a variety of land uses (urban, industrial, agricultural) …

Body-Map Storytelling: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Hospital Care Amongst Street Involved Youth, Chelsey Fedchenko Jan 2024

Body-Map Storytelling: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Hospital Care Amongst Street Involved Youth, Chelsey Fedchenko

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This social work study explores the experiences of hospital care amongst street-involved (SI) youth. Given that SI youth are at a higher risk for health-related harms and experience significant barriers to health care services, they are at an increased likelihood of hospitalization. Yet, inadequate health care support for SI youth remains a critical problem in Canada. While hospital care amongst adult homeless populations has been well studied interdisciplinary, there is a scarcity of research investigating the hospital care experiences amongst SI youth. The aim of this qualitative, arts-based study was to explore how street-life contributes to hospitalization, how SI youth …

Why Did Disciples Anoint With Oil For Healing In Mark 6:13?, Craig S. Keener

The Asbury Journal

This short essay explores the cultural meanings behind the practice of anointing people with oil for healing within the context of scripture. This work is the result of research which is not being published elsewhere due to space limitations, but is considered significant and of interest to many in the Global Church today. While it does not fit the full definition of an academic article, it remains an essay which can clarify and illuminate the issue of anointing with oil for many leaders and laity in the church.

Season Influences Interspecific Responses Of Canopy-Forming Kelps To Future Warming And Acidification At High Latitude, Lauren E. Bell, Lily Westphal, Evan O' Brien, Jason A. Toy, Haleigh Damron, Kristy J. Kroeker

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Variability in primary producers' responses to environmental change may buffer higher trophic levels against shifts in basal resource composition. Then again, in instances where there is a lack of functional redundancy because consumers rely on a few species to meet their energetic requirements at specific times of the year, altered community production dynamics may significantly impact food web resilience. In high-latitude kelp forests, a complementary annual phenology of seaweed production supports coastal marine consumers' metabolic needs across large seasonal variations in their environment. Yet, marine consumers in these systems may face significant metabolic stress under the pronounced low pH conditions …

Assumptions, Resources, And Inputs To Case Management: Implications For California’S Regional Center System, Jonathan Flint Jan 2024

Assumptions, Resources, And Inputs To Case Management: Implications For California’S Regional Center System, Jonathan Flint

Master's Projects

This project adds to knowledge of case management assumptions, resources, and inputs for California’s Regional Center system by surveying members of the Service Access and Equity working group, formed by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS). It recommends development of a logic model to evaluate case management activities because their intended societal impacts are difficult to directly measure. Additionally, it adds to the debate on health equity and racial disparities in Medicaid long-term services and supports (LTSS). In 1969, passage of the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act (The Lanterman Act) led to the first and still only entitlement to community-based …

Fifty Years Of 'Cut To Grow': How Changing Narratives Around Corporate Tax Policy Have Undermined Child And Family Well-Being, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Emily Divito, Niko Lusiani

Articles

What follows in this report is an assessment, though not exhaustive, of the central worldviews and set of assumptions driving key US corporate tax reform moments in history—and their consequences for the well-being of children and families in the US. Though political narratives of all kinds are never cleanly chronological (and this remains true of those pertaining to corporate taxation and well-being policies), we aim to build on existing understanding of how dominant narratives come to be and how they, to the extent that they do, drive corporate tax policy outcomes in the US. Looking back over the past 50 …

Against The Current: Charting A New Course For Human Rights In Sustainable Fisheries Management, James H. Stitt

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The note advocates for a paradigm shift in fisheries management, moving beyond Western-centric regulatory frameworks to a holistic, human rights-based approach that integrates sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and social justice. It emphasizes the critical role of small-scale fisheries and Indigenous communities in achieving ecological and economic sustainability, arguing that their traditional knowledge and practices are essential for effective resource management. The analysis highlights the limitations of existing international frameworks, such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC) and the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF), in addressing the needs of small-scale and Indigenous fishers. …

The New Frontier For Bankruptcy: Crypto, Lindy Lofton Jan 2024

The New Frontier For Bankruptcy: Crypto, Lindy Lofton

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note examines the regulatory challenges posed by the rise of cryptocurrency platforms like Celsius and FTX, which have faced significant financial difficulties and bankruptcy. These platforms operate similarly to traditional banks and brokerages but lack the same regulatory oversight, leaving customers vulnerable without protections like FDIC insurance. The note argues that adopting legislation akin to the Banking Act of 1933 or the Securities Investor Protection Act (SIPA) could provide necessary safeguards, such as insurance mechanisms similar to FDIC or SIPC. However, the decentralized nature of cryptocurrency and opposition from the crypto community pose challenges to implementing such regulations. The …
