Pauline Eschatology, Luther A. Schuessler Jan 1924

Pauline Eschatology, Luther A. Schuessler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this inquiry is to present a brief resume of Pauline Eschatology in the narrow sense as it is represented in the thirteen Epistles of Paul and in the discourses attributed to him in the Book of the Acts. Since these Epistles and discourses comprehend the cardinal truths of eschatology, the value of this inquiry is obvious.

Observations On The Nutritive Value Of Skimmed Milk Powder, L. T. Anderegg Jan 1924

Observations On The Nutritive Value Of Skimmed Milk Powder, L. T. Anderegg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Diets containing skim milk powder as the source of protein and vitamins other than A, produce results different from comparable diets made up from whole milk powder. Growth is about normal or may be better than normal. Reproduction and rearing of young is not normal. There are few or no litters, and the young almost invariably die. The period of producing the first litters may be much delayed. Addition of yeast or wheat embryo has resulted in normal growth and in the normal rearing of the first litters of young. The second generation rats are growing normally and appear to …

The Preparation Of Zeolytic Water Softening Materials, Eston L. Barthel Jan 1924

The Preparation Of Zeolytic Water Softening Materials, Eston L. Barthel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Raw untreated green sand is very colloidal and has little or no water softening power. By heating the green sand to 400°C and subsequently treating it with a salt (NaCl) solution, a stable zeolitic sand is obtained which has good water softening power. This method is in actual use at the present time. It has been found that by modifying this treatment a zeolite with greater water softening power is obtained. The sand is first treated with a concentrated calcium chloride solution, and subsequently with a concentrated sodium chloride solution. The sand is then rapidly heated to a temperature of …

Diet In Relation To Reproduction And Rearing Of Young, L. T. Anderegg Jan 1924

Diet In Relation To Reproduction And Rearing Of Young, L. T. Anderegg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Any information which aids in securing an answer to the question as to what constitutes an optimum diet is of the utmost importance. The employment of the biological method of investigation has been exceedingly fruitful of results in this field. By this method the diet is submitted to actual feeding tests with experimental animals and their behavior thereon is observed. For this purpose the rat is most frequently employed on account of its relatively small food consumption, its omniverous habit, and its comparatively short reproductive cycle and span of life. It is thus possible to get the life histories of …

Cured Meats Temptingly Served, Susan Z. Wilder Jan 1924

Cured Meats Temptingly Served, Susan Z. Wilder

SDSU Extension Circulars

The question of better and more extensive use of home grown products is always of interest to the farmer’s wife. This is particularly true if by their use she can reduce the cost of living and at the same time serve the family well balanced meals that mean right living and better health. Home butchering gives the family a meat supply that is much cheaper than that which can be purchased each day from the butcher shop. There is the advantage of having the finer cuts of meat a t a very nominal price. If interest has been taken in …

The Effect Of Endocrines Upon Animal Behavior., J. Hubert Geyer Jan 1924

The Effect Of Endocrines Upon Animal Behavior., J. Hubert Geyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is not the primary purpose of this present work to treat the problem of the evolution of behavior, but rather to give an analysis of animal behavior as observed. These observations may appear as simple tests, but they make possible a new way to measure the capacity and determine the rate of learning by the animal mind. Progress in learning takes place through increased variety and precision of the movements brought about by stimulation and is very clearly observed in Amoeba, where we find the production of varied movements and the resolution of one physiological state into another. Thus …

Action Of Thionyl Chloride On Diacetone-Glucose, James B. Allison Jan 1924

Action Of Thionyl Chloride On Diacetone-Glucose, James B. Allison

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Diacetone-glucose was treated with thionyl chloride in hopes of replacing the free hydroxy group by chlorine. The sodium salt of diacetone-glucose (and other diacetonehexoses) in inert solvents, reacts instantaneously with thionyl chloride. The reaction product is apparently the di-(diacetone-glucose)-ester of sulfurous or sulfonic acid. One fraction has been obtained crystalline but no analysis was attempted due to the small yields. The product reacts with hydrazine to form the 3-hydrazino-diacetone-glucose which would indicate a structure analogous to that of the 3-toluol-sulfono-diacetone-glucose.

Three Maxims For The Study Of The Nutrition Of Microorganisms, Ellis I. Fulmer Jan 1924

Three Maxims For The Study Of The Nutrition Of Microorganisms, Ellis I. Fulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

I. The relative potencies of two materials cannot be arrived at by the comparison of the effects of the two materials at equal concentrations. Corollary: The effect of treatment upon the potency of a material cannot be determined by the comparison of the treated and untreated material at equal concentrations. II. The relative potencies of two materials at one temperature may not be true for any other temperature. Corollary: Temperature coefficients for the effect of a material must be determined under optimum conditions for each temperature. III. If two materials are to be compared as a source of a protoplasmic …
